HOLDING COURT MAY BE SUPPLEMENTED FOR IRISH DERBY
Holding Court, the runaway winner of yesterday's Emirates Airline Prix du Jockey-Club at Chantilly, will probably now be supplemented for the Budweiser Irish Derby at the Curragh on July 2 at a cost of IR£85,000.
If Holding Court can go on to success in Ireland, he will collect a bonus of $1 million. Trainer Michael Jarvis admitted: "It's very tempting."
Jarvis went on to state that Holding Court's long term target would be the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe - Lucien Barriere on October 1, a race in which he trained Carroll House to victory in 1989. The trainer said: "I can see him as an Arc horse. He loves galloping and he loves to lead on his right, which is why Epsom was never really considered."
McCARRON TO RIDE BESTS
Godolphin have selected leading American jockey Chris McCarron to partner Best Of The Bests in the Vodafone Derby on Saturday, following Frankie Dettori's injury in last week's plane crash at Newmarket.
McCarron, 45, will be experiencing Epsom for the second time, having finished 14th on the Clive Brittain-trained Bold Arrangement in 1986.
In addition to riding Best Of The Bests, McCarron will also partner Godolphin's Melikah in the Vodafone Oaks and Fantastic Light in the Vodafone Coronation Cup.
QUEST FORCED TO MISS EPSOM
Saddler's Quest, trained by Gerard Butler and triumphant in the Lingfield Derby Trial last month, has been forced to miss Epsom following a setback.
Butler reported that the colt had suffered a recurrence of an old injury. He will now be aimed at the Rothmans Royals St Leger at Doncaster on September 9.
Meanwhile, connections of Barathea Guest have announced that a decision will be made on Thursday to determine whether the colt will take his chance at Epsom.
BOOST FOR SWEDISH BREEDING
A series of three races, known as the Tattersalls Breeders' Series", are to be held at Jagerso and Taby racecourses in Sweden and will aim to improve the quality of horses bred in that country.
The races, only open to fillies and mares, will be sponsored by Coolmore Stud from Ireland, Gestut Fahrof from Germany, British-based Lanwades Studs and Bloodstock auctioneers Tattersalls.
The winner of each race will receive a stallion nomination from the sponsoring stud and also a 5,000 guineas voucher from Tattersalls, which will be redeemable against the purchase of either a filly in training or broodmare at either their December 2000, February 2001 or July 2001 sale.
SHORT FILMS FOR DERBY WEEK
Channel 4 have commissioned a series of three three-minute films in the lead-up to Derby weekend which will concentrate on the unsung heroes of racing. Twenty Twenty Television are the producers.
The films, which will broadcast at 7.55pm and start tomorrow, will focus on jockey's valet David Currie, bookmaker Stewart James and vet Marcus Head.
David Kerr, Channel 4's Editor for Sport stated: "These short films will give viewers an extra insight into the racing world as it approaches one of its biggest weekends of the year. It was nice to use a new director, who brings a fresh eye and a different perspective to the sport."
