SANTOLINA STEPS UP TO LISTED CLASS

Two-year-old filly Santolina, trained by John Gosden, runs in the £20,000 added Listed High Havens Empress Stakes at Newmarket tomorrow, with Richard Hills again taking the ride.

The daughter of Boundary was highly impressive when she made her debut at Leicester on June 18, quickening to lead just before the furlong pole to win easily from the Mick Channon-trained Extra Guest by four lengths.

After her debut win Gosden said: "She's a nice sort who will hopefully go on from here. She seemed to handle the fast ground without any problem."
Interestingly the Leicester maiden which Gosden chose to introduce Santolina in was won by Primo Valentino last season, who went on to win the Group One Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket.
Gosden continued: "If she turns out half as good as Primo Valentino, we will be very lucky."

RACEHORSE OWNERS ASSOCIATION PROPOSES SHARE IN APPEARANCE MONEY

The President of the Racehorse Owners Association, has proposed that trainers, jockeys and stable staff should share appearance money payments.

Chairman Sir Eric Parker stated: "It is our aim that the whole industry embraces appearance money as a concept for the future and we hope that this initiative will help fuel enthusiasm for it." Parker went on to state that it was particularly important for appearance money to be shared when Sunday racing takes place, due to the disruptive effect that this can have on the lives of people employed within the racing industry. Appearance money, Parker believes, can help compensate for this.

The ROA went on to propose that when £300 is offered in appearance money, the owner should pay the trainer £24 per runner, the jockey £18 and the stable staff £18. Where £500 is on offer, it should be £40 per runner for the trainer, £30 to the jockey and £30 to the stable staff.

LAHAN MAY MISS REST OF SEASON

Lahan, winner of the Sagitta 1000 Guineas on May 7, may not race again this season. A stress-fracture on her off-fore joint has been diagnosed and Lahan is likely to have three weeks of box rest.

Initially it had been thought that Lahan had only suffered a minor rapture to her off-fore joint when she was cast in her box two weeks ago. However an X-ray has subsequently revealed that there was actually a stress fracture.

Angus Gold, racing manager to owner Hamdan Al Maktoum, stated: "We are hopeful of her racing again before the end of the season, but we can be no more than hopeful at this stage. We've certainly no race in mind; it's just a question of getting her back."

SHEIKH MOHAMMED'S SON RIDES AT NEWCASTLE

Rasheed Al Maktoum, eldest son of Sheikh Mohammed, makes his British riding debut at Newcastle tonight. The 19 year-old will ride Brazilian Mood for Sheikh Mohammed.

Bloodstock agent David Metcalfe, who is helping Rasheed Al Maktoum, stated: "He has ridden in amateur races in Dubai, and he is a world-class endurance rider. With the endurance season virtually over, he wants to ride in some amateur races here over the summer. Ultimately I'm sure he'd like to ride in the amateur's Derby at Epsom."
