TOTALBET.COM APPOINT MANAGING DIRECTOR
Totalbet.com, the internet betting operation that came about as a result of a joint venture between the Tote and PA Sporting Life Limited and which has become the fastest-growing area of the Tote's £500m turnover, is to appoint a managing director.
Lee Richardson will take up the position, having previously worked in marketing for Hertz Europe, the BHB and Tote Direct.
It has also been announced that an application has been made for permission for Totalbet.com to operate from the island of Malta, where there is a lower rate of taxation.
Peter Jones, chairman of the Tote stated: "The appointment of Lee Richardson is an important step for Totalbet. We have a great technical site and Lee is the right man to sell the benefits of betting on it to the worldwide market. Regarding our move to Malta, it is not a question of on or off-shore but rather one of how to compete most effectively in the international betting market.
WILLIAM HILL APPOINT NEW CHIEF EXECUTIVE
Bookmakers William Hill have appointed David Harding as their new Chief Executive. Harding replaces John Brown who will continue as Executive Chairman. Harding will take up his new position on August 1.
Previously, Harding, 44 and an MBA graduate of Warwick University, has worked for Jaguar, US West, Mercury One2One, Sharelink and most recently Prudential Insurance as Managing Director of their life insurance and pensions division.
58 ENTERED FOR SEASON'S FINAL CLASSIC
The £350,000 Rothmans Royals St Leger, the world's oldest classic run for the 224th time on Saturday, September 9, has attracted a bumper entry of 58 horses, seven more than last year.
The entries for the Doncaster classic are headed by Holding Court, the runaway six-length victor of the French Derby for trainer Michael Jarvis.
The Ballydoyle training operation of Aidan O'Brien features very prominently, having ten entries, the largest number of any trainer. They are headed by Aristotle, triumphant in last season's Group One Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster. The other O'Brien entries are Albuquerque, Bach, Chiang Mai, Glyndebourne, Homer, Lermontov, Mythological, Rostropovich and Shakespeare.
Ireland is also represented with three from Dermot Weld's yard -Media Puzzle, Quality Team and Sage Dance. If any of the Irish raiders are successful, it will be the first time the St Leger has gone to Ireland since Vincent O'Brien's Boucher won in 1972.
Godolphin has an impressive recent record in the Rothmans Royals St Leger, with Classic Cliche (1995), Nedawi (1998) and Mutafaweq (1999) all being successful. This year Sheikh Mohammed's operation has eight entered - Broche, Entisar, Hatha Anna, Inchlonaig, Melikah, River's Curtain, Roscius and Teggiano. Melikah must have a leading chance after her staying-on third in the Vodafone Oaks behind Love Divine and improvement also looks likely from Teggiano, who finished a fine second in the Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot after a 270-day absence.
Four fillies have won the final classic since 1977, Dunfermline (1977), Sun Princess (1983), Oh So Sharp (1985) and User Friendly (1992), and six have been placed since 1986.
The Aga Khan has been having a tremendous season and the owner has three entries for the Doncaster classic - Baniyar, Dalampour and Shapour - all trained by Sir Michael Stoute. Dalampour is the current pick of the three following his success in the Queen's Vase at Royal Ascot.
Both the Aga Khan and Sir Michael Stoute are still awaiting their first Rothmans Royals St Leger winners, although the great Shergar was fourth for the duo in 1981 and Baynoun finished second for the Aga Khan in 1984. Stoute has also had two seconds, Saddlers' Hall (1991) and Hellenic (1990), plus a third Untold (1986).
Henry Cecil has won the Rothmans Royals St Leger four times, with Light Cavalry (1980), Oh So Sharp (1985), Reference Point (1987) and Michelozzo (1989). The Master of Warren Place has six entries for the classic in 2000 - Andromedes, Jolly Sharp, Sandmason, Subtle Power, Total Care and Wellbeing.
Subtle Power could be the kind of late-maturing type that often does well in the classic, especially after his victory in the Group Two King Edward
VII Stakes at Royal Ascot last week, with Zafonium in second, Roscius third, Trahern fourth, Baniyar fifth, Going Global sixth and Hatha Anna seventh. Wellbeing finished fifth behind Sinndar in the Vodafone Derby while Sandmason, also owned by the executors of the late Lord Howard de Walden, would also to be a live contender following two decent second placings behind Hataab and Beat Hollow.
Shantou scored for John Gosden in 1996 and there are six entries from the Manton trainer this year - Baldaquin, Buckminster, Ragdale Hall, Savoire Vivre, Stage Direction and Trahern. All six are relatively inexperienced horses but have scope.
John Dunlop, successful with Moon Madness (1986) and Silver Patriarch (1997), has Millenary, winner of the Chester Vase this season, as his sole entry this year.
Other notable entries include the Gerard Butler-trained Saddler's Quest, who scored in the Lingfield Derby Trial on his last outing before a setback forced him to miss Epsom. He is now on target for the Rothmans Royals St Leger and will probably be trialed in York's Great Voltigeur Stakes.

FLAGSHIP REMOVED FROM NICHOLLS
Flagship Uberalles has been removed from Paul Nicholls's yard and will now be trained by Noel Chance in Lambourn.
The six-year-old Accordion gelding, along with Executive Decision and Strawberry Hill was removed by American owners Michael Kryszofiak and Elizabeth Gutner. The pair refused to give a reason for their decision.
Flagship Uberalles's regular partner Joe Tizzard was originally to have kept the ride on him when he went to Noel Chance. However, Tizzard will no longer be riding the gelding after he cancelled a trip to visit the owners in America when learning of the decision to remove the horse from Nicholls.
COCHRANE AIMING FOR JULY RETURN
Ray Cochrane, injured along with Frankie Dettori in the plane crash at Newmarket on June 1, hopes to be back in the saddle for Newmarket's July meeting.
Cochrane, who says he has undergone a "remarkable recovery" stated yesterday: "I'm aiming to be back on the first day of the July meeting. I'm going out jogging quietly and just getting my back strong again, but I'm hoping it is going to be all right."
Meanwhile, Frankie Dettori still has York's Ebor meeting pencilled in for his return.
MARCUS TO RIDE IN UK
South African jockey Basil Marcus is to ride permanently in Britain. The 40-year old is a seven-times champion in Hong Kong. He will apply for an ordinary Jockey Club licence, as opposed to riding on an international licence as Greg Hall, Damien Oliver and Craig Williams do.
Marcus rode in Britain from 1989-1990, finishing second in the 1990 Oaks on Game Plan for Clive Brittain.
