GODOLPHIN'S EUROPEAN TWO-YEAR-OLD OPERATION WILL SWITCH TO NEWMARKET IN 2001

David Loder, the trainer in charge of Godolphin's European two-year-old operation, will train approximately 100 two-year-olds next year at Stanley House Stables in Newmarket, England.

The historic Stanley House complex, owned by Sheikh Mohammed, is one of Britain's premier training yards. It was built in 1903 by the 16th Earl of Derby and has housed 23 British Classic winners.

Stanley House Stables on Bury Road has been unoccupied since John Gosden moved to train at Robert Sangster's Manton Estate at the end of last year and Godolphin is keen to utilise these outstanding facilities.

Godolphin's European two-year-old operation was established at the former Evry Racecourse in France in late 1998, in time for the 1999 season. At that time Stanley House Stables was not available and the French site, which is leased, was the most suitable for a private training operation.

Since moving to Evry, David Loder has sent out 20 winners from 53 two-year-old runners, including City On A Hill who was successful in Listed and Group 3 company, and Dignify, the winner of the Group 3 Prix d'Aumale.

The Maktoum Family has a close association with French racing and this is demonstrated by major sponsorships, including three French Classics, the Dubai Poule d'Essai des Poulains, Dubai Poule d'Essai des Pouliches and Emirates Prix du Jockey Club. In addition, they also sponsor the G1 Emirates Prix du Moulin.

GOING AT ASCOT

The Ascot going remains

GOOD TO FIRM, GOOD IN PLACES

after a dry night. There have been a couple of light showers so far this morning and the forecast is for generally dry weather for the rest of the day.

ROYAL ASCOT CROWDS

The total attendance at this year's Royal Ascot was 237,254, an increase of 5.2 % compared with the four-day total of 225,591 in 1999.
This year's figure has only been bettered once - 239,787 in 1997 - and it was after 1997 the capacities were capped in the Grandstand.

A feature of the figures has been the increased attendances in the Silver Ring. For example on the Friday, 12,904 racegoers were in the Silver Ring compared with 4,110 for that enclosure in 1995 and 3,071 in 1990 on the same day.

Douglas Erskine-Crum, Chief Executive of Ascot Racecourse, said: "We had record crowds on the Tuesday and Friday, and racegoers enjoyed outstanding racing all through Royal Ascot.

"Royal Ascot has moved into the 21st century with its popularity continuing to grow. Our big challenge now is the development of the racecourse which is due to start in late 2003 and will give us brand new facilities which will rival those at any course in the world."

FRIDAY
Friday's attendance was a record one for the Friday of Royal Ascot - 58,336, up 4.8% from the previous best of 55,662 seen last year.

THURSDAY

The attendance of Ascot Gold Cup Day - Ladies Day - came to 72,546, up 3.1% on last year's 69,860. In 1998 the attendance was 67,326.

WEDNESDAY

Wednesday's attendance came to 55,763, up 3.1% compared to last year's 54,092 and 54,088 in 1998.

TUESDAY

Tuesday's attendance of 50,609 was a first-day record, 10.1% up on last year's crowd of 45,977 and well ahead of the previous record, 49,088, seen in 1997.

LEADING JOCKEYS AT ROYAL ASCOT

Kieren Fallon won the London Clubs Charity Trophy for the leading jockey at the Royal Meeting, even though he missed half of it through injury.

His four winners, two each on the first and second days, were enough to hold off Richard Quinn and Johnny Murtagh.

Quinn's three winners at Royal Ascot have earned £1,200 for Ascot's Charity 2000 Appeal.

Eurobet, Coral's Internet betting service, agreed to donate £400 for every Ascot winner between the start of Royal Ascot and the end of the season ridden by Richard Quinn, who announced last week that he would be the Appeal patron.
There are now 10 racedays left in Ascot's Flat season, including today's Ascot Heath fixture.

Ascot's year-long Appeal will benefit four charities supporting people with impaired sight and hearing. The Royal Racecourse has pledged to raise a minimum of £100,000 to be split equally between Action for Blind People, Fight for Sight, Deafblind UK and Sense, the National Deafblind and Rubella Association.

THE LONDON CLUBS FERN HILL RATED STAKES

TOUGH PAPABILE

William Jarvis, the trainer of the gutsy winner Papabile, said: "She is a very game filly - very tough - and I am delighted to get some black type into her. She is a full sister to Grand Lodge and she will make a very lovely broodmare in time but I think she has another nice race in her.

"She is improving fast and there is a possibly a Group Three race in her - we'll probably go abroad for that.

"I couldn't see how Rosse could beat us as she had finished in front of her at Newmarket - I didn't make Rosse our main danger.

"She is very similar to Grand Lodge - she is is not as good as him but has all of his will to win. He had some very hard races in defeat as well as in victory - he only got beaten a short head by Mister Baileys in the Guineas and by Dernier Empereur in the Champion Stakes and he only won by a head here at Ascot (in the St James's Palace Stakes).

"Pat (Eddery) was very brilliant on her - he is the ultimate professional and still riding as well as ever.

"It is very nice for Lady Howard and Plantation Stud - they are having a great run."

SECOND RACE QUOTES
THE PALAN HANDICAP

OFF TO VODAFONE STEWARDS' CUP

Compton Banker, ridden by Paul Doe, came with a smooth run to win the five-furlong Palan Handicap for trainer Gerard Butler and owner Erik Penser.

Butler said: "The livelier ground, the faster pace and the return to five furlongs all suited him. We ran him at Goodwood about two weeks ago over six furlongs. He ran well against older horses and more or less blew up in the end. He has been training very well since.

"We had coming here for yesterday's Wokingham but he was balloted out and this is a consolation prize. I wanted to go for a classified race at Pontefract tomorrow but Mr Penser said I want to go to Ascot.

"Last year he was one of our nicest two-year-olds - he ran very well first time out and then we threw him in at the deep end - it was probably a bit too much for him.

"To become a proper sprinter it takes a while to learn the whole game of jumping, settling and finishing. He's put it all together today. We will aim him at the Vodafone Stewards' Cup."

The trainer had news of Saddler's Quest, who had to miss the Vodafone Derby, but is now being aimed at the Great Voltigeur and the Rothmans Royals St Leger.

THIRD RACE QUOTES
THE MILCARS NEW STAKES
PROGRESSIVE VILA

John Gosden, the trainer of the winner Port Vila, said: "At Ascot when you get shuffled back to last you have one choice, stay on the rail and pray for a gap, because if you attempt to come around (the field) you will always be the unlucky third.

"So you either, in that situation, look a genius or an idiot - a jockey can never look anything in between the two. The gap came - Sheikh Ahmed's horse was about to close him in but fortunately rolled off the rail and we just got through.

"He is a very relaxed horse this year - he was very keen last year when he won his maiden, won at Kempton and ran in the Dewhurst. He was always going to be a mile and a quarter horse. Horses seem to get very relaxed at Manton, even if the trainer doesn't!

"I think this is his trip and I would like to have a go at the Group Two Prix Eugene Adam (July 14, Deauville). He was fourth in the Dewhurst where he got caught out by the false pace. He has always had plenty of ability but is incredibly idle in his work."

FOURTH RACE QUOTES
THE LADBROKE HANDICAP
IN-FORM PERRETT

Amanda Perrett has her team in fine form. After Blue's success in the Ladbroke Handicap, she said: "It is brilliant. We couldn't get him right last year.

"The last three runners have all been winners and this winner means as much as any really. Ken and Sylvia Buchanan were with Dad for a long time and they stayed and supported us.

"This horse had a good two-year-old career and then lost his way at three - thank goodness he has come back now.

"Pat put me right - we went too far at Newmarket last time out - and he said go back to a mile and a quarter and he will definitely win - thanks to Pat again.

"Pat has always ridden the Coombelands horses - he rode Dancing Brave - and he has been very helpful to Mark and I since we started training. He rode a lot of our early winners and thankfully we are forming a good partnership again now and long may it continue.

"We could never get Blue 100% right last year - it was lots of niggling things. As the autumn came we decided to put him away and it has been the making of him.

"All the family gets better with age - Captain's Guest won the Cesarewitch - and I think there is still plenty to come with this horse, given a bit of luck.

"To have a Royal Ascot winner (with Give The Slip in the King George V Handicap) was an unbelievable feeling. You look down the list of trainers who have had Royal Ascot winners and there are so few trainers lucky to have a winner. So to have one so early in our training career is just unbelievable."

FIFTH RACE QUOTES
DE BOER EBF TRIUMVIRATE CLASSIFIED STAKES

ANOTHER FOR GOSDEN

John Gosden completed a 7.3125/1 double when the favourite Hymn won the De Boer EBF Triumvirate Classified Stakes.

The Manton trainer said: "I told Kevin to please go and make it if you want to - in small fields you have to do that. It gives the jockey the option to ride that sort of race if necessary.

"As it was Courting made the running and we were forced wide all the way. But at the end of the day we were always in a striking position. I told Kevin not to bother covering him up - he relaxes.

"When they straightened up he could make a run - there is nothing worse than getting boxed-in in a falsely-run race. He didn't do that and got up and won.

"He's a better horse on good ground. He's run to a rating of about 95/97 and he's right up to 98/100 but he's not a lot more than that."

MORE TO COME

Hejaziah got off the mark on her third outing, running on well for Kevin Darley who was completing a 5.5/1 double.

Anthony Penfold, owner Fahd Salman's racing manager, said: "She did it all right in the end - she wanted every yard of that six furlongs.

"She will go on and will be a nice filly. She'll run next over seven furlongs - being out of a Nijinsky mare she should stay well. She was still a bit green here despite it being her third race."

GENEROUS KNOWS HIS WAY AROUND ASCOT

Generous Ways won the Betterware Handicap for the second successive year, with Willie Supple again the successful jockey.

Supple said: "He travelled well all the way - he seems to like it here."
The five-year-old is trained by Eric Alston near Preston in Lancashire and the trainer's wife said: "He's a different horse here - he has always run well at Ascot (he was third in his only other Ascot start).

"The horses are just coming back after not being right - Generous Ways was affected by whatever it was."

ANOTHER GREAT CROWD

Today's attendance came to 25,241, the highest June Saturday crowd for ten years.
