ASCOT TO WATER FOR ROYAL MEETING
Conditions at Ascot racecourse are currently good to firm ahead of next week's Royal meeting. The course management have taken the decision to water the course, after weather forecasters suggested that temperatures could rise to up to 27C over the weekend.
Nick Cheyne, Clerk of the Course at Ascot stated: "The going is good to firm and we are watering. The penetrometer reading this morning was 2.6. We started watering on Monday and will continue to do so as necessary."
NO FAIRYTALE ENDING FOR POWELL
Brendan Powell had no fairytale end to his career yesterday when he drew a blank on his final day in the saddle.
The 39 year-old's best finishing position was third, on Primitive Star in the 3.10 and on Radar in the 4.40.
Since his first win on Button Boy in 1983, Powell rode a total of 603 winners. His biggest success came in the 1988 Grand National, when he rode Rhyme ‘N' Reason to victory.
Powell will now train a dual purpose string at Morestead, near Winchester. He hopes to have his first runners next month.
CECIL RUNS FIRST TWO-YEAR OLD
Henry Cecil is due to run his first two year-old of the season when Vacamonte lines up for the Listed Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot on June 21.
The Caerleon colt is one of 73 juveniles currently in training at Warren Place.
KELLAWAY TO APPEAL OVER PRASLIN ISLAND
Trainer Gay Kellaway is to appeal over the disqualification of Praslin Island at Nottingham on Monday.
Neil Callan's mount edged left after leaving the stalls and was demoted from first to last place following an objection from Philip Robinson who rode second-placed Zincalo.
Kellaway stated: "He's jumped out, there's a bit of scrimmaging and they were tight on the rail anyway. It wasn't ‘major irresponsible' and we go to Portman Square on Monday."
