The 28 year-old US-based will join Jerry Bailey in deputising for the injured Frankie Dettori.

Godolphin's racing manager Simon Crisford commented: "Sheikh Mohammed has always been keen to break down the boundaries of international racing, and bringing John Velazquez over with Jerry Bailey demonstrates his commitment to that goal."

Several of Godolphin's stars are entered at Royal Ascot including Aljabr, China Visit, Bachir, Dubai Millennium, Kayf Tara, Lend A Hand and Bertolini.

QUINN PLEDGES SUPPORT FOR ASCOT APPEAL

Jockey Richard Quinn has pledged his support to Ascot Racecourse's Charity 2000 Appeal by becoming its patron.

The year-long appeal, for which Ascot has pledged to raise a minimum of £100,000 will benefit four charities supporting people with impaired sight and hearing-Action for Blind People, Fight For Sight, Deafblind UK and Sense and The National Deafblind and Rubella Association.

Quinn commented: "These four charities do some extremely vital work for people with sight and hearing problems. So I'm really pleased to be able to support them as patron of the Ascot appeal, particularly as I have been deaf in my right ear since an accident when I was a teenager."

A series of fundraising events will take place throughout the year, including Family Day at Ascot on August 13 when racegoers and their families will join celebrity families for the day's racing.

LEVY BOARD MARKETING GROUP ANNOUNCES NATIONAL MARKETING STRATEGY FOR RACING AND BETTING

The Racing and Betting Marketing Group (RBMG) today unveils a £10 million three-year national marketing strategy for racing and betting.

This Group was commissioned by the Levy Board Marketing Sub Committee to undertake the development and implementation of the national strategy, and is representative of the racing and betting industries.

The three-year plan has established a series of success criteria. However, the key targets for the end of the three-year period are to attract an additional one million attendances (with the associated on-course betting benefit) and to increase off-course betting turnover by 1% above inflation.

The main thrust of the marketing plan is to develop a national strategy for racing and betting that encourages participation amongst key target audiences, breaks down barriers to entry, increases attendance and encourages loyalty.

The delivery of this strategy is through the establishment of an interactive, action- based central information and ticketing infrastructure, accessible by telephone and internet. This will be designed to provide a single gateway into racing and betting. This in turn will be supported by a hard-hitting, high impact national promotional and PR campaign.

In year one, the cost will be weighted towards the development of the central system and associated plans. In years two and three, the emphasis will shift towards sales building activities.

The RBMG is planning to launch the campaign in the third quarter of 2000.

Funding has also been identified within the plan for marketing support for race planning initiatives, ownership marketing and bloodstock marketing.

Sir John Robb, Chairman of the Levy Board Marketing Sub Committee, today commented: "The Levy Board is delighted to be able to provide much-needed funding for the marketing of racing and betting."

"We are particularly pleased that racing and betting have been able to come together in such a positive way, and to produce such a strong and ambitious plan for the whole sport."

"With such a robust plan in place, we believe that within three years horseracing and betting on horseracing will be perceived as one of the most accessible of modern day sports or leisure activities."

The Racing and Betting Marketing Group is already well underway with the further development of the plan, and is pleased to announce the appointment of four key agencies. These are Inkfish, who will be providing the call centre and web central information services; Mustoe, Merriman, Herring and Levy (MMHL) who will be the design agency; The Broadcasting Company, who will be hosting radio services for the strategy; and CPM Mobile Marketing, who will be handling the on-the-road marketing services.

Further agency appointments are expected shortly, particularly in the area of research and evaluation.
