INTERNATIONAL ENTRY OF 76 FOR DARLEY JULY CUP - DELZANGLES PLANNING ANOTHER NEWMARKET RAID WITH MARCHAND D’OR

This year’s £400,000 Group One Darley July Cup looks set to be another outstanding renewal with the world’s leading sprinters featuring among an entry of 76 for the six-furlong contest, seven more than in 2009.

Among the entries for the Group One contest are horses trained in Australia, the USA, France Hong Kong and Germany as well as Britain and Ireland.

Highlight of the three-day Newmarket July Festival on Friday, 9th July, the Darley July Cup is one of the three British legs of the Global Sprint Challenge alongside the King’s Stand Stakes and the Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Having plundered the StanJames.com 2000 Guineas on Saturday with Makfi, French trainer Mikel Delzangles is eyeing up another major Newmarket prize with Marchand D’Or, who posted a scintillating victory in the 2008 Darley July Cup for former handler Freddie Head.

The seven-year-old followed up his success on the July Course with an unprecedented third success in the Group One Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville and a storming win the Prix de l’Abbaye at Longchamp but switched to Delzangles’ Chantilly stable in March after a lacklustre 2009 campaign.

Delzangles revealed: “Marchand D’Or is fine at the moment and we are planning to give him a comeback run in the Prix Saint-Georges at Longchamp (16th May). If he comes out of that race in good order, then the Darley July Cup would be on his agenda.

“We have the option of the two races at Royal Ascot and he could go there beforehand or alternatively there is the Group Two at Prix du Gros-Chene at Chantilly for him on 6th June.

“I couldn’t honestly say that he can return to his best. I think he was a bit sick last season but he seems fine now and we will have a better idea whether his talent remains after his return at Longchamp.”

Australian sprinters have dominated the first two British legs of the Global Sprint Challenge at Royal Ascot but have yet to emerge victorious in the Darley July Cup. A quartet of antipodean entries features the David Hayes-trained pair of Nicconi, who landed the Group One Lightning Stakes at Flemington in January, and Group Two scorer Eagle Falls. Gold Trail, from the yard of Gary Portelli, and the Paul Messara-trained Alverta also boast Group One-winning form down under.

Two of the most exciting southern hemisphere performers of recent years may also line up for new connections. Dual Group One winner Starspangledbanner was purchased by Michael Tabor in January and is set to race for Aidan O’Brien this summer, while Denman, successful in the Group One New Golden Rose Stakes in August, has been transferred from Peter Snowden to Godolphin trainer Saeed bin Suroor by Sheikh Mohammed.

A pair of Hong Kong-trained entries consists of the Derek Cruz-trained Joy And Fun, successful in the Group Three Al Quoz Sprint at Meydan in March, and Happy Zero, who triumphed in the Group One Queen’s Silver Jubilee Cup at Sha Tin in March for handler John Moore.

Dubai Golden Shaheen victor Kinsale King, one of three entries hailing from the United States, has been entered by Carl O’Callaghan alongside stable companion Leaving New York. Todd Pletcher enjoyed his first success in the Kentucky Derby on Saturday and the New York trainer may be represented by the progressive West Ocean, who has posted impressive wins on his two most recent starts.

The “Budapest Bullet” Overdose, unbeaten in 13 starts, is set to make his British debut at Royal Ascot ahead of a possible tilt at Newmarket, while French handler Alain de Royer-Dupre may be represented by Prix de la Foret scorer Varenar and War Artist, who took third in the 2008 Darley July Cup when in the care of James Eustace.

The home challenge is set to be headed by Fleeting Spirit, who survived a stewards’ enquiry to triumph over Main Aim in last year’s race. The Jeremy Noseda-trained filly went on to finish second behind Regal Parade in the Haydock Sprint Cup and filled the same spot in the Prix de l’Abbaye.

Other notable entries include the Aidan O’Brien-trained Rip Van Winkle and Paco Boy, from the stable of Richard Hannon, who have posted Group One victories over a mile, and last year’s Stan James-sponsored 2000 Guineas runner-up Delegator.

The Classic generation is also set to be well represented and the 29 three-year-olds entered included Canford Cliffs, third in the StanJames.com 2000 Guineas on Saturday, as well as Awzaan and Showcasing, who took first and third respectively in last season’s Group One Shadwell Middle Park Stakes. Aidan O’Brien has given an entry to the highly regarded pair of Steinbeck and Lillie Langtry, successful in the Tattersalls Timeform Fillies’ 800 on the Rowley Mile in October.

FREE ADMISSION FOR RACEGOERS - ODDSCHECKER.COM WEDNESDAYS

Oddschecker.com Wednesdays, an exciting new free racecourse admission scheme, is launched today by Oddschecker, the leading online betting odds comparison service.

The 2-for-1 offer is on Wednesdays at selected Northern Racing courses from May 12 right through to August 25, where one racegoer goes free when another pays the normal entrance price.

This follows on from Racing For Change’s recent week-long experiment, but Oddschecker.com Wednesdays is a longer-lasting initiative which is designed to encourage both new racegoers and repeat visits.

The Oddschecker 2-for-1 offer is available across the main enclosures at the 10 racecourses which gives people the chance to experience the thrill of horses racing on the Flat or over jumps.

The courses are dotted across Britain, ranging from Newcastle and Sedgefield in the North, Uttoxeter in the Midlands, Great Yarmouth on the East Coast to Hereford, Bath, Chepstow and Ffos Las in the West and Brighton and Fontwell Park in the South.

For those punters wanting to make a night of it, there is plenty of racing on Wednesday evenings. A full schedule of the racecourses and dates involved in Oddschecker.com Wednesdays is listed below.

To take advantage of Oddschecker.com Wednesdays, log on to www.oddschecker.com and register for the offer. Choose your racecourse, print off your 2-for-1 voucher and present it at the admission gates.

A lucky participant will be drawn at random for each fixture and given on arrival extra special VIP tickets which will include presenting the best-turned-out horse prize and race trophy.

Derren Maggs, General Manager at Oddschecker, said today: “We are very excited about this promotion which will encourage our customers to go racing.

“Oddschecker already offers a service that ensures punters get the best prices and now we can help racegoers enjoy a day at the races for free.

“Northern Racing has tracks across England and Wales so everyone has the chance to benefit from this 2-for-1 offer.

“There have been some very successful 2-for-1 offers outside racing and we are very optimistic that this will appeal to the public.”

Tony Kelly, Group Managing Director at Northern Racing, added: “We are delighted to enter into this partnership with Oddschecker that will offer greater value for visitors to our racecourses this summer. It will be a great incentive for people to come racing."

40 FOR INVESTEC ENTREPRENEURIAL CLASS 'DASH'

Jim Goldie’s string is firing at present and the Lanarkshire trainer is targeting the £75,000 Investec Entrepreneurial Class ‘Dash’ at Epsom Downs on Saturday, June 5, with the in-form Hawkeyethenoo and previous winner Hogmaneigh.

Run over the fastest five furlongs in the world, the Investec Entrepreneurial Class ‘Dash’ provides the perfect curtain-raiser to the Investec Derby which takes place 45 minutes later. This year’s renewal has attracted 40 entries

Hawkeyethenoo has won both his starts this season and followed a Thirsk five-furlong victory last month with a comfortable first win over six furlongs in a valuable handicap at Newmarket on Sunday, May 2.

Goldie revealed today: “The plan is for them both to go to Epsom. Hawkeyethenoo has been very good this season. He has a 100 per cent record so far and you can’t do better than that.

“He had always shown his best form at five furlongs until Sunday so, while it is a difficult race, I think it will suit him. He is fast enough and it suits finishers, as Hogmaneigh proved.”

Hogmaneigh took the Investec Entrepreneurial Class ‘Dash’ in 2007 when trained by Stuart Williams and also captured the Portland Handicap at Doncaster in 2008. The seven-year-old joined Goldie towards the end of last season.

Goldie continued: “Hogmaneigh is doing fine and we will probably target the Investec Entrepreneurial Class ‘Dash’. We will try and get him spot on for that race; he knows where the winning post is there and if we get him to Epsom in good order, he will run another good race.

“Hogmaneigh would probably like it on the softer side but it is always well-watered on Investec Derby Day. We will take whatever comes but it is nearly always one of those days when the ground is good and it is rarely any faster than that.”

Dandy Nicholls is renowned for his expert handling of sprinters and he has half a dozen entries to choose from, headed by last year’s victor Indian Trail and also including City Dancer, the lightly-raced Crimea who was previously trained by Mark Johnston, the consistent Masta Plasta, the 2009 third Strike Up The Band and Striking Spirit, who chased home the Bryan Smart-trained Moorhouse Lad in a conditions event at Musselburgh on April 30.

Other entries boasting good form during the current campaign include Duchess Dora, successful in a valuable five-furlong handicap at Sandown Park on April 23 for Yorkshire-based handler John Quinn and Fathom Five, who recorded a course and distance victory when triumphant in the Investec Capital Market Handicap at the Investec Spring Meeting on April 21.

A real five-furlong specialist is Glamorous Spirit, who has won six times at the minimum trip for trainer Ron Harris and was last seen out when finishing a short-head second in a Listed event at Lingfield in March.

INVESTEC ENTREPRENEURIAL CLASS 'DASH'
