THIRD RACE WINNING QUOTES
StanJames.com 1000 GUINEAS (GROUP 1)

DUTY TAKES GUINEAS IN SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES

French raider Special Duty won the StanJames.com 1000 Guineas in dramatic circumstances after being awarded the race following a stewards’ enquiry.

Prince Khalid Abdulla’s Special Duty finished a nose behind 66/1 chance Jacqueline Quest, trained by Henry Cecil, but after an enquiry into interference she received the race.

It was the first time since the 1980 2000 Guineas (when Nureyev was disqualified and Abdulla’s Known Fact was promoted to first) that the result of a Classic has been decided in the stewards’ room and winning trainer Criquette Head-Maarek admitted that the circumstances of her success were far from ideal.

“Stephane (Pasquier) said she would have won if it was not for the other horse hanging into her. That filly drifted and drifted but I don’t like to win a race like this,” said Head-Maarek.

“I think she proved today that she was the best and in our country she would have kept the race but I never thought they would stand the other filly down in this country. I never thought about objecting, I have never objected in my life.

“I suppose the other filly’s connections will be very annoyed and you always like to win a race truly but I’m very happy. There is someone up there looking down, a French God! She is a great filly and has a heart as big as herself.

“She had a bad winter and I wasn’t worried that she was beaten in her prep. We had to be 100 per cent today but she was beaten in the prep by two fillies trained in south-west France where the weather had been warmer.

“She’ll go back in the tunnel tonight and we’ve got two weeks this year until the French Guineas and so maybe we could do that. I will have to speak to the Prince and see what he thinks.”

Pasquier added: “She was very relaxed behind and showed a superb turn of foot. I deserved to win and she has proved what a good filly she is today.

“It is difficult to win a race like this and I would prefer to win properly, this is a different sensation but she definitely deserved it. I’m just happy for my filly and she showed something special today.

“My big question before the race was whether she stayed the trip and today she showed she did.”

This was the trainer’s fourth StanJames.com 1000 Guineas success. The French have taken both StanJames.com-sponsored Guineas this year following Makfi’s success in the 2000 Guineas yesterday and this was the first time since 1900 that this has happened and probably ever.

CECIL TAKES IT ON THE CHIN

Henry Cecil paid tribute to the connections of Special Duty following the demotion of Jacqueline Quest to second place in the StanJames.com 1000 Guineas.

Cecil, who would have won his seventh renewal of the Classic if Jacqueline Quest had kept the race, said: “If our filly took Special Duty across the course, then Special Duty deserved to win. Jacqueline Quest ran really well and is improving.

“Maybe I will get my own back at Royal Ascot. I am pleased for Criquette and the Prince (Khalid Abdullah, owner of Special Duty) but I would obviously rather have won the race myself.”

NUNNELEY EXPLAINS WHY THE RACE HAD TO GO TO SPECIAL DUTY

Stipendiary Steward William Nunneley, explained the reasoning behind the reversal of the placings by the stewards. He said: “The question we had to consider is whether Special Duty lost her chance of winning due to interference.

“We looked at the film and Jacqueline Quest drifted right. They touched and she continued to go across. Tom Queally had his whip in his left hand and Jacqueline Quest continued to drift.

“The distance was a nose, which is just a pixel on the photograph. It was not a hard decision for us to make in that it was that small a margin.

“We have suspended Tom Queally for three days (May 16 to 18) for careless riding.

“It is unfortunate when things like this happen but we have to administer the rules as we would with any race.”

JACQUELINE ON A QUEST FOR ASCOT GLORY AFTER GUINEAS HEARTBREAK

“We’ll try to get our revenge at Ascot,” a defiant Henry Cecil told owner Noel Martin seconds after the announcement that the finishing positions of the first two fillies home in the StanJames.com 1000 Guineas had been reversed.

With Jacqueline Quest having been led in to the winner’s position, Cecil had said as he waited for the result of the stewards’ enquiry: “I didn’t think she’d get the trip and she’s only really just come to hand. It was Noel’s (Martin, owner) decision to run her and I just didn’t think she’d get the mile. I still don’t think she’s quite there yet. She’ll be a lovely filly for the Coronation (Stakes at Royal Ascot).

“All credit to Noel. He was right and I was wrong. I’m always wrong. I didn’t think this would be her day.”

Owner Noel Martin said: “I was convinced she could do it with the way she won last year and ran in the trial. I thought if we held her up a bit maybe she’d get the mile. She’s bred to get the trip.

“Nothing’s 100 per cent but I got the idea in my head that maybe she could do it. Maybe has turned into reality. I always thought a lot of the horse. I named her after my wife who died two years ago. We waited a long time to find the right one.”

On hearing the result of the enquiry, Martin added: “She was first past the post and she’s still the winner to me.”

StanJames.com 1,000 Guineas reaction

QUEALLY TAKES STEWARDS’ DECISION WITH GOOD GRACE

Tom Queally reacted to losing the StanJames.com 1,000 Guineas, which would have been his first Classic victory, in the stewards’ room with admirable equanimity, saying: “When I saw the photo finish I was a bit surprised and then delighted. I didn’t think I’d lose it in the stewards’ room even though you can’t count your chickens before they hatch.”

Jacqueline Quest was first past the post with Queally aboard, finishing just a nose ahead of the eventual winner Special Duty.

He continued: “It’s obviously disappointing but it’s not a tragedy. There are far worse things going on in the world. You can’t dwell on the past or get bogged down by defeats or bad days. Of course it was a bad day and I’m so sorry for the owner but the filly that won the race is obviously very good and best of luck to them with her.

“I’m sure something good will come out of it, maybe even at Ascot, but she’s run really well. If I go around with a long face it won’t achieve anything. We just have to look ahead to the next time. Hopefully I’ll be in the position when we’re on top again.”

Kevin Manning, rider of third-placed Gile Na Greine said: “She has run a very good race. She hit a flat spot going into the dip but was putting in her best work over the last 100 yards.”

Her trainer Jim Bolger added: “A mile is the bare minimum for her and I wish the race was over nine furlongs. She stays well and could go for the Musidora at York. She could be an Oaks filly.

“She probably ran as well as her sister (runner-up Cuis Ghaire) last year.”

BEATEN JOCKEY QUOTES FROM THE StanJames.com 1000 GUINEAS

Michael Hills, jockey of the fourth, Sent From Heaven, said: “She has run a blinder. It was a marvellous performance because we have struggled because of the cold weather and she is not really at her peak at the moment.”

Richard Hills rider of seventh-placed Rumoush said: “We travelled to halfway and then hit a little bit of a flat spot but stayed on at the end.”

Tadhg O’Shea rider of eighth-placed Habaayib said: “I got a lovely run through the race she travelled well. She was close enough and good enough, but is possibly better at a furlong shorter. She has definitely trained on and there are some lovely races to be won with her.”

Kieren Fallon jockey of 12th-placed Seta said: “I was in the wrong place - we were a mile behind and never had a chance to make up the ground from there. She will be back.”

Jim Crowley jockey of Nurture, who came 14th, said: “ I’m not disappointed - it was her first run of the year and I’m sure she will come on for it and maybe over a bit further.”

Johnny Murtagh rider of Devoted To You, who came 15th, said: “She ran badly, I can’t explain it I was gone by halfway. I couldn’t blame the ground as she was never on the bridal.”

Frankie Dettori rider of the 16th Hibaayeb said: “A mile is far too sharp for as she needs a trip.”

Neil Callan rider of the last placed Misheer said: “She has too much natural speed. She ran a bit gassy early on then dropped her head half way, but these are championship races and you need to conserve it- not use it early.”

PUFF MISSES GUINEAS

Fred Darling Stakes winner Puff will not run in this afternoon’s StanJames.com 1000 Guineas.

Trainer Ralph Beckett withdrew the filly because of the rain-softened ground and her intended rider Jim Crowley will now switch to Puff’s stablemate Nurture, replacing George Baker.

Special Duty
Last season’s champion two-year-old filly, Special Duty, followed up defeat on her debut in the Listed Prix Yacowlef with a brilliant victory over colts in the Group Two Prix Robert Papin. That success came over six furlongs at Maisons-Laffitte on July 26, at the expense of subsequent Group One Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere hero Siyouni. Special Duty then went to Deauville on August 23, for the Group One Prix Morny, again over six furlongs, and went down by a short-neck when second to the colt Arcano, with Coventry Stakes winner Canford Cliffs a neck back in third. She then headed to Newmarket for the Group One Electrolux Cheveley Park Stakes over the same distance and put up a brilliant display, drawing two and three-quarter lengths clear of Misheer. Special Duty made her three-year-old return in the Group Three Prix Imprudence over seven furlongs at Maisons-Laffitte on April 8. The Hennessy filly, in need of the run, led from the off before fading in the closing stages to finish a length third behind the successful Joanna. Special Duty is the first foal of the maiden Quest To Peak, who is a sister to seven-time US Grade One winner Sightseek and half-sister to US Grade One victor Tates Creek. She finished a nose second to Jacqueline Quest but was awarded the race by the stewards because of interfrerence. Race Record: Starts: 6; Wins: 3; 2nd: 2; 3rd: 1; Win & Place Prize Money: £494,520

Khalid Abdulla
Prince Khalid Abdulla, who prefers to be known just as Mr Abdulla on the racecard, is a first cousin to King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia. He owns extensive racing and breeding interests in America, Britain and Ireland. A businessman presiding over a huge international conglomerate known as "Mawared", he developed a love for British racing during the 1960s when renting a house in London and, with the help of former trainer Humphrey Cottrill, had his first winner on May 14, 1979, when Charming Native scored at Windsor. Born in Taif, Saudi Arabia, in 1937, Abdulla has been one of the most successful owner-breeders in Europe in the past four decades and is the only current owner to have owned and bred the winners of all five British Classics - his winners being Investec Derby (1990 Quest For Fame, 1993 Commander In Chief), Investec Oaks (1997 Reams Of Verse), 2000 Guineas (1980 Known Fact, 1986 Dancing Brave, 1993 Zafonic), 1000 Guineas (1999 Wince) and Ladbrokes St Leger (1991 Toulon). He has won most of the other major European races such as the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe with Rainbow Quest (1985), Rail Link (2006) and the legendary Dancing Brave (1986), who was an unlucky loser in the Derby. Abdulla also races with great success in France and the United States, where under the Juddmonte Farms banner he won a first Triple Crown race in 2003 with Empire Maker in the Belmont Stakes. In 2003 his greatest successes in Europe came with star sprinter Oasis Dream, winner of the July Cup at Newmarket and Nunthorpe Stakes at York and French Oaks heroine Nebraska Tornado, while American Post was triumphant in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere (Grand Criterium) at Longchamp and the Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster, helping Abdulla to become champion owner in both Britain and France, while he also finished third in the USA owners' championship that year. American Post went on to Classic success in the French 2,000 Guineas in 2004 and Polish Summer triumphed in the Dubai Sheema Classic the same year, while Intercontinental gave Abdulla a second Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf in 2005, following full-sister Banks Hill three years earlier. Abdulla's French-trained horses again led the way in 2006, with Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Rail Link proving the highlight. In 2007, Juddmonte Farms bred 27 individual Group/Stakes winners of 33 races, including Zambezi Sun, who wore the famous Abdulla colours to victory in the Group One Grand Prix de Paris, while in 2008 Promising Lead took the Pretty Polly Stakes at the Curragh, Proportional won the Prix Marcel Boussac and African Rose took the Ladbrokes Sprint Cup. Midday, winner of the Group One Nassau Stakes at Goodwood and runner-up in the Oaks, added victory in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf last season, while Twice Over captured the Emirates Airlines Champion Stakes. Special Duty was crowned champion two-year-old filly after her scintillating win in the Group One Electrolux Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket while Spanish Moon was a Group One winner in France. Abdulla is an honorary Jockey Club member and his daughter was married to the late Prince Fahd Salman, owner of 1991 Derby victor Generous. He gained his second StanJames.com 1000 Guineas today with Special Duty. Previous StanJames.com 1000 Guineas Winners: 1999 Wince; 2010 Special Duty

Criquette Head-Maarek FR
Born on November 11, 1948, and named Christiane but known as "Criquette", she is one of the third generation of the Head family to carve a highly successful niche in racing, after first taking out a licence to train in 1977. Grandfather, Willie, who died aged 94 in 1984, and father, Alec, were both respected first as jockeys and then as trainers. The former sent out two winners of the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, Le Paillon (1947) and Bon Mot III (1966), and the latter four, Nuccio (1952), Saint Crespin III (1959), Ivanjica (1976) and Gold River (1981). Criquette joined that exclusive club when saddling Three Troikas to win the 1979 renewal. Alec Head trained the 1956 Derby winner Lavandin. Among Criquette’s many other big-race winners are Bering in the 1986 French Derby, Hatoof in the 1993 Champion Stakes at Newmarket and Anabaa, who in 1996 carried all before him in top-class sprints across Europe before being foiled by stablemate Kistena in the Prix de l'Abbaye. She has won the StanJames.com 1000 Guineas three times, with Ma Biche in 1983, Ravinella in 1988 and Hatoof in 1992. Pas De Réponse, who was fourth in 1997, attempted to emulate Ma Biche and Ravinella, who both won the Cheveley Park Stakes in the year prior to classic victory at Newmarket and last season’s champion two-year-old filly Special Duty did the same this year. In 2000, Okawango won the Group One Grand Criterium at Longchamp in October while Egyptband took the Prix Diane, and was second to Sinndar in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. American Post won the Prix Jean Luc Lagardere (Grand Criterium) at Longchamp and the Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster in 2003 and took the French 2,000 Guineas in 2004. Proportional took the Group One Prix Marcel Boussac in 2008 while in 2009 she handled the champion European juvenile filly of 2009, Special Duty. Her brother Freddie, who was a top jockey, is also a trainer. Stephane Pasquier
Born January 17, 1978, Stephane Pasquier started as an apprentice with Robert Collet, winning on his second ride for the trainer. He won his first Listed race with Bleu Nuit in the Swiss Derby in June 1999, and scored at Group Three level on Acceleration in the Prix Corrida in June 2001. He became second jockey to the Wildenstein family in July 2004, winning his first Group One with Westerner in the Prix Royal Oak that October. He was subsequently promoted as the Wildenstein family’s first jockey in 2005. He won the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe on the Khalid Abdulla-owned Rail Link in 2006 and accepted a contract to ride for the owner in April 2007. He was French Champion Jockey for the first time in 2007, a season that was marked by his association with the exceptional Manduro, winner of the Prix d’Ispahan, Prince Of Wales’s Stakes and Prix Jacques le Marois. He rode the Khalid Abdulla-owned African Rose to success in the 2008 Group One Ladbrokes Sprint Cup and teamed up with that filly’s trainer Criquette Head-Maarek in 2009 when winning the Group One Electrolux Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket that October. In November, 2009, it was announced that Pasquier would not ride Khalid Abdulla-owned horses that are trained by Andre Fabre. He rode his first British Classic winner on Special Duty today.. LANCASHIRE OAKS THE AIM FOR CLASSY TINAAR

Trainer Gerard Butler moved his string into Egerton House Stables next-door to Newmarket’s July Course over the winter and looks to have a nice filly on his hands for this season following the length-and-a-half victory of Tinaar in the opening race on StanJames.com 1,000 Guineas day, the StanJames.com Handicap over a mile and a half.

He said: “She’s not a kicker, just a relentless galloper more than anything else. She’s very well-bred so we’d like to go after some black type for her. The Lancashire Oaks is the race that comes to mind. The plan might be to go to Haydock at the end of this month and then wait and give her a nice break before the Lancashire Oaks in July.

“I’m absolutely delighted with her run today. She’s class personified. She’s so easy to saddle and nice to ride.”

Butler, who has purchased a few breeze-up horses for Tinaar’s owner Fawzi Nass in recent weeks, added: “She worked last Saturday on her own private gallop between the ditches (adjacent to the July Course) - it’s a lovely gallop and hardly anybody uses it apart from a few rabbits. She worked well and has been in good form for some time now, so it’s nice to get a pay day. These handicaps are hard - yesterday we were beaten a head. You can go through the whole year not winning with these horses but I thought she was good for the win from a long way out today. I walked the track and spent half an hour trying to find another race to run her in as I didn’t think she’d go on the ground today. Thank God I couldn’t find one!”

FRANKIE DETTORI - WINNING QUOTES FROM RACE ONE

Frankie Dettori, winning rider on Tinaar in the opening StanJames.com Handicap over a mile and a half said:

“Gerard (Butler) told me that she stays well. I was just a bit worried about the ground but the ground is perfect.

“It was a decent gallop and I used my stamina - she kept finding and galloped all the way. Obviously, the ground is not as quick as yesterday but I would say it’s good racing ground.

“She is an improving horse and the sort of horse Gerard does well with.”

Reflecting on yesterday’s StanJames.com 2000 Guineas in which Godolphin’s Al Zir finished ninth under Dettori, he added: “Al Zir didn’t have enough speed for a mile yesterday and we will step him up to a mile and a quarter or maybe even a mile and a half. He tried, but just didn’t have the turn of foot of the others.”

Looking ahead to this afternoon’s StanJames.com 1000 Guineas, where he partners Hibaayeb, Dettori added: “Hibaayeb is a Group One winner. A mile is on the short side for her and she will do her best work at the end. The Oaks is the plan for her.”

Ryan Moore, winning rider on Strawberrydaiquiri: “They was always going a bit quick in the middle and I just had to pull her out. She just got a bit tired on that ground but she can only improve for that run. I am very pleased with her.

“It was nice to pick up the ride on Music Show in the StanJames.com 1000 Guineas. The ground is just good to soft ground and obviously her form is on better ground but it should be fine for her. I am just hopeful.”

Andrew Balding, trainer of runner-up Chiberta King, said: “That’s a great start to the season for him and he’s likely to come back here in a fortnight for a mile-and-six-furlong handicap. He loves this track and it’s good to see that he goes on this ground. That will give us a few more options.”

GOING AFTER THE FIRST RACE

Frankie Dettori, partner of the 8/1 winner Tinaar, said: “It is a bit slow in the dip but, overall, perfect ground.”

William Buick, partner of the one and a half length second, Chiberta King, said: “Good to soft.”

Jimmy Fortune, partner of the third Heliodor, said: “Good to soft.”

Tom Queally, rider of fourth placed Hillview Boy, said: “Good to soft.”

Ryan Moore, rider of unplaced 9/2 favourite Class Is Class, said: “It is on the soft side.”

Richard Hills, jockey of Record Breaker, described the going as: “Soft.”

Tom Eaves, rider of Pevensey, said: “Good to soft.”

Richard Hughes, rider of Matyr, said: “Good to soft.”

Tadhg O’Shea, rider of Ouster, said: “It is riding good to soft but tacky.”

Nicky Mackay, rider of Raptor, thought the ground: “Good, but kicking up a bit.”

STRAWBERRY TAKES DAHLIA

The Sir Michael Stoute-trained Strawberrydaiquiri battled hard to beat Honimiere by a head and make a winning seasonal comeback in the Group Three StanJames.com Dahlia Stakes.

“She was game and really had to battle today,” said Stoute. “The runner-up poached a lead and my filly was bit tired but her gameness saw her through.

“At the end of last season we thought she would get 10 furlongs so we’d be looking at races from 8 to 10 furlongs. She is in the Ascot race (the Windsor Forest Stakes) and the Pretty Polly in Ireland but we’ll just have to see how she progresses from race one to race two.

“She thrives on the warmth and will improve a bit from this but she is going to need to.”

Winning rider Ryan Moore added: "They was always going a bit quick in the middle and I just had to pull her out. She just got a bit tired on that ground but she can only improve for that run. I am very pleased with her.

"It was nice to pick up the ride on Music Show in the StanJames.com 1000 Guineas. The ground is just good to soft and obviously her form is on better ground but it should be fine for her. I am just hopeful."

GUTSY RUNNER-UP HONIMIERE TO
RETURN AT YORK

The Alan Swinbank-trained Honimiere turned the nine-furlong StanJames.com Dahlia Stakes into a real test of stamina, making the early running and failing only narrowly to hold off eventual winner Strawberrydaiquiri in the Group Three event.

Alastair Donald, racing manager for the filly’s owner Gary Tanaka, said: “She’s a lovely big strong filly and she’s improved with every run. Alan Swinbank was pretty confident of a good run though the trip was perhaps a bit short for her - she wants a bit farther so we decided to make the running with her and make it a bit of a test of stamina. She’s gutsy and you’d have to think there’s more to come.

“The plan today was to see if she’s Group class and if she wasn’t she’d have gone to America. Now I think she can hang around here for a bit longer and I think she’ll go for the Middleton Stakes at York, which should be the perfect distance for her.”

James Fanshawe, trainer of third-placed Spacious, said: “The ground wouldn’t have been ideal for her, she likes it on top. I think she’s best at a mile so she’ll stick to a mile for the rest of the year. But she usually needs a race to get her into gear and she’s run very well.”

Race 4 - Bettingmadeeasy@StanJames.com Handicap

AYR GOLD CUP TARGET FOR GOLDIE’S HAWKEYETHENOO

Hawekeyethenoo continued the good form of the Jim Goldie string, coming with a storming late run to beat Enact by a length and a quarter in the Bettingmadeeasy@StanJames.com Handicap in the hands of Andrea Atzeni.

The East Renfrew handler, who sent out Nanton to take second in yesterday’s Group Two StanJames.com Jockey Club Stakes, is now considering aiming his four-year-old sprinter at the Ayr Gold Cup in September.

Goldie commented: “Obviously he won well at Thirsk last time and we were fairly confident that he would run well here as well. He’s done it again and it is onwards and upwards now.

“The Ayr Gold Cup is the main aim. It’s worth going up that way because it means everything to us Scots - every big sprinter aims that way. He’s a nice a horse and he loves the trip.

“We have had a good meeting, with Nanton running well yesterday and now coming into the winners’ enclosure. While we will aim Nanton at the Yorkshire Cup, I don’t think that this fellow will be heading to York.

“He will probably have a wee bit of time off. We try to give him at least a fortnight between his races and you can’t go back to the well too soon!”

FRETWELL HAILS GROUP-CLASS COLT

Temple Meads had been backed in from 14/1 to 4/1 for the five-furlong maiden and the Ed McMahon stable’s confidence in its colt proved utterly justified as the son of Avonbridge ran home strongly on the Rowley Mile for a length and three-quarter victory under Richard Mullen.

Temple Meads’ owner John Fretwell said: “He’s a grand strong colt and very professional - he’s like a two-year-old in a three-year-old’s body.

“We thought he’d definitely win. We really do feel he’s a Group horse.

“Royal Ascot’s a possibility but we only like to go there if we’re really competitive and I think he’s all class and will like better ground.

Fretwell added: “We had his half-sister Sneak Preview last year and she was nice but he’s even better.”

O’BRIEN HOPES TO WORK THE ORACLE NEXT TIME

Oracle will look to break his duck next time out after finishing second to Temple Meads in the Belucky@StanJames.com Maiden.

“He ran well and everything went fine in the race. I should think he will go for another maiden and then hopefully go on from there,” said the runner-up’s trainer Aidan O’Brien.

Al Aasifh pleased trainer Saeed bin Suroor with his third placing. “He showed plenty of speed and is like a real two-year-old. He’s a nice colt and still learning. Next time I think he will have a better chance,” said the Godolphin trainer.

MARIE SHINES UNDER DETTORI

The Mark Johnston-trained Marie De Medici took the Listed Haveago@StanJames.com Pretty Polly Stakes under a bold front-running ride from Frankie Dettori and could now be tested in Classic company.

“She ran very well two weeks ago here and Frankie said that a mile and a quarter would probably be her trip,” said Johnston. “We entered her for the Cheshire Oaks but when we looked at the entries for that race and this, we decided to come here.

“She is in the Oaks at Epsom but I think that might stretch her a bit. It’s probably a step too far from today. John (Ferguson) suggested the Italian Oaks and we’ll take it gradually with her.

“I always thought a lot of her and she has been consistent but just not quite as progressive as we thought.”

The Barry Hills-trained Red Fantasy delighted connections with her second place. Charlie Hills, assistant to his father, said: “She’s run a lovely race, she’s still a maiden and is still in the Oaks.”

Miss Starlight finished third and her trainer Charlie McBride commented: ”That was an absolutely brilliant result and we’re delighted with her.”

LONDON CALLING FOR PATTERN COMPANY

The highly regarded London Stripe is now two wins from three runs after landing the finale of the StanJames.com Guineas Festival and the Sir Michael Stoute-trained colt could take his chances in some bigger engagements. He holds entries for the Dante Stakes, King Edward VII Stakes and Irish Derby

Assistant trainer Owen Burrows said: “That’s a lovely start to his season. He’s a horse on the up and has some fancy entries. He’s a nice horse and we had hoped he’d be able to win nicely today and go on from here.

“He has the perfect temperament and is very straightforward. He’s very laidback, he’s not a very fancy worker at home but he’s nice. Ryan (Moore) loves him.”

CALLAN AND MOORE GIVEN BANS

Neil Callan picked up a three-day ban following his ride on Honimiere, who finished second in the StanJames.com Dahlia Stakes. The stewards held he had used his whip with excessive frequency. The dates for his ban are Sunday, Monday and Tuesday - May 16 to 18.

The stewards also banned Ryan Moore for one day for his winning ride in the last race aboard London Stripe. Moore was found guilty of careless riding having interfered with the unplaced Shernando and will be suspended from action on Sunday, 16 May.

MAKFI’S 33/1 StanJames.com 2000 GUINEAS VICTORY -
WHAT THE PAPERS SAY

“Rejects are not supposed to do this,” writes Jonathan Powell in the Mail On Sunday, highlighting the fact that yesterday’s 33/1 StanJames.com 2000 Guineas hero Makfi was sold to his present connections for just 26,000 guineas last autumn by Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum’s Shadwell operation.

Powell continues: “The Maktoums spend hundreds of millions each year in pursuit of equine perfection. Yesterday, their three runners were out of sight at the finish as one of their cast-offs, Makfi, romped home for the gifted young French trainer Mikel Delzangles.”

Jon Lees in the Racing Post takes a similar line in the Racing Post, stating: “Proof that there is still room in the sport of kings for those who operate in the bargain basement came when Hamdan Al Maktoum cast-off Makfi claimed a surprise victory for France.”

Alastair Down, lead writer in the Racing Post, reminds us that much credit must go to Makfi’s trainer Mikel Delzangles: “There was much about this result that was genuinely astonishing, but all credit to 39-year-old Mikel Delzangles, who was not even a household name in his own maison until yesterday. He had the confidence and gumption to bring Makfi over to contest a Classic with the big battalions, and that was some bold call for a horse whose previous visit to Newmarket was for a used horse sale at the buckle end of October.”

Down goes on to state that yesterday’s result was good for racing: “And this was a great result, not because it has given us a superstar but because it has given us all a chance. This was the pauper’s Classic with the first four home sold for around £100,000 between them, probably around half of the money you would need to send a mare to Galileo. I know that doesn’t put racehorse ownership in reach of a Fenland brussel-sprout picker or the man who stacks Morrisons’ shelves in the wee small hours, but it sure as hell enfranchises a heck of a lot of other folk either singly or in syndicates...Racing For Change bangs on about making the Flat accessible; well Makfi didn’t half do a good job on that front yesterday.”

It is in the very nature of this sport that races do not always produce the results people predict, a point perfectly summarised by Sue Montgomery in The Independent On Sunday: “Horses, unknowing and uncaring of man’s plans and ambitions for them, are such great levellers, the antidote to hubris.”

Greg Wood in The Observer spares a thought both for punters, who largely ignored the 33/1 winner, and also trainer Marcus Tregoning, who handed Makfi last year: “The backers’ sense of loss as they left the track yesterday evening will have been shared by Marcus Tregoning, who had Makfi in his stable last season.”

Marcus Armytage in the Sunday Telegraph remarks that although Shadwell were still able to claim a £7,500 breeders’ prize, this will have been of little interest to Sheikh Hamdan: “It will probably have been more to his old owner’s annoyance than pleasure that he will be posted a £7,500 breeders’ prize.”

Headline of the day goes to The People - “Makfi’s Magic - But St Nicholas Abbey hasn’t got a prayer” - highlighting the fact that Evens favourite St Nicholas Abbey could finish no better than sixth.

Andrew Longmore picks up on ths point in The Sunday Times: “There might well be a wonder horse to admire for the rest of the season, but it will not be the one everybody expected. Most punters and pundits were not even looking across the right stretch of water. While St Nicholas Abbey was touted as a potential successor to the all-conquering Sea The Stars, a neat and compact son of Dubawi was being prepared for a typically dashing cross-Channel raid by a French trainer having his first runner in a Classic.”

GOING NOW GOOD TO SOFT

Following further rain this morning, the going at Newmarket for day two of the StanJames.com Guineas Festival, Sunday, May 2, has changed to:

GOOD TO SOFT

(from Good, Good to Soft in places)

Michael Prosser, Clerk of the Course and Director of Racing at Newmarket Racecourses, commented: “I changed the going after walking the course with the stewards at noon today.

“We had seen eight millimetres of rain fall before 10.30am and we now must be approaching 10 millimetres in total since last night after further rain this morning.”

NON-RUNNERS

The Press Association reported this morning that dual Oaks winner Sariska will miss this afternoon's StanJames.com Dahlia Stakes at Newmarket after suffering a minor foot injury.

Trainer Michael Bell had been hoping to use the Group Three contest as a seasonal starting point for his Classic heroine but her participation had been in some doubt on Friday due to the fast ground. Rain last night meant conditions were suitable for the four-year-old but this setback means she will not be lining up.

The totesport.com Middleton Stakes at York on May 13 is now her likely destination.

“Sadly she’s out and it’s very frustrating as the rain has come and the ground would have been fine for her,” said Bell.

“It’s nothing major but it’s just enough to swing the balance against running her. She’s just twisted her plate when she’s been stood in her box and pricked her foot, it is only minor but it’s enough to stop us running.

“York is now very much the target as this should only hold us up two or three days at the most.”

GOING NEWS AT 10.30AM

The official going description was changed to

Good, Good To Soft in places

at 6.30am after a wet night.

Michael Prosser, Newmarket’s Director of Racing and Clerk of the Course, said: “I changed the going at 6.30am after we had had six millimetres of rain overnight. By 10.30am we had had eight millimetres and I will walk the course at 11.15am and see if we need to change the going description again.

“There is not much more rain to come, just a little bit of drizzle that should have disappeared by midday. We are set for a temperature of 10 degrees this afternoon.”

The stalls will be on the stands’ side except for the StanJames.com 1000 Guineas and the opening 12-furlong handicap when they will be in the middle.
