StanJames.com 2000 GUINEAS (GROUP 1)
MAKFI SPRINGS 33/1 SURPRISE
All the talk before today’s StanJames.com 2000 Guineas was of St Nicholas Abbey, who was sent off Evens favourite for the Classic, but he could finish only sixth as a new star emerged on the Rowley Mile in French raider Makfi who stormed to a length and a quarter victory at odds of 33/1.
The winner had been bought out of Marcus Tregoning’s stable as unraced two-year-old for 26,000 guineas at Tattersalls in October and had won both his starts for new trainer Mikel Delzangles before lining up today.
“It’s amazing - I can’t believe it. The owner wanted a Dubawi and I went to Tattersalls and found him - he was a good-looking horse. We were just lucky buying him, we didn’t know much about him beforehand and went there with a budget of 30,000 guineas,” said 39-year-old Delzangles.
“We were waiting for the Prix Djebel to see whether to come here. We had an idea, as they say in French “derriere a la tete”, so we went for that race. He had run twice on soft ground but there were no reasons why he wouldn’t go on good ground. I was hoping that he would run very well and that he would finish in the first five.
“I think that he has proved that he is very good now and we might come back to England for the St James’s Palace Stakes. The French Guineas is only two weeks away and it’s a short time for a horse who has run only three times.
“In the morning he doesn’t show much but the way he won his first race so easily and the way he behaved - he is a very quiet horse, very cold, but he can quicken. He’s a very easy horse to train, he’s got a good temperament.
“I have great memories of my time in England when I worked for Jimmy FitzGerald in 1989.”
Jockey Christophe Lemaire added: “It’s very pleasant. He won well last time but we were worried about his lack of experience. He won very well last time - when he won in two strides - and his conditions had improved since then. He travelled very well all of the way and, when we had the gap, he really kicked and had a very good turn of foot. He’s a top class horse. The good horses go in every ground and I was not worried about the going today.
“In the early part of the race I just sat behind Johnny (Murtagh on St Nicholas Abbey) and was happy with my position. At the three-furlong marker I could see that Johnny was not travelling well and when I got a gap I kicked on and he accelerated very strongly.
“He doesn’t have much experience and I think he has some more improvement. I have had many big successes at this racecourse, I feel very comfortable at this track although I’ve been lucky to ride some good horses here. The atmosphere is very special here, it’s the birthplace of horseracing.”
Makfi’s Paris-based owner Matthieu Offenstadt has seven horses in training. He added: “For a small owner like me it’s hard to buy yearlings so we went to Newmarket sales and I wanted to buy a Dubawi. We saw him and thought he had a nice head. I hoped he might win a maiden but this is really just a dream.”

StanJames.com 2000 Guineas (Group One)
TURPIN SEES OFF CANFORD IN STABLE DUEL
Richard Hannon saddled Dick Turpin and Canford Cliffs to finish second and third behind French raider Makfi in the first Classic of the season, the Group One StanJames.com 2000 Guineas.
Dick Turpin (16/1), who had caused a minor shock when defeating Canford Cliffs in the Group Three Greenham Stakes at Newbury on April 17, was half a length superior to his stable companion but a length and a quarter inferior to the impressive winner.
Hannon, who has won the StanJames.com 2000 Guineas previously with Mon Fils (1973), Don’t Forget Me (1987) and Tirol (1990), commented: “Dick Turpin looked super walking round here - there’s not a bother on him, he’s a good horse. Both horses ran super races, I’m pleased with them both.
“I said after Newbury when they were first and second in the Greenham that we probably had two very good horses.”
Canford Cliffs, the impressive winner of the Group Two Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot last term, was sent off a 12/1 shot under Richard Hughes.
Hannon continued: “Hughesie said the dip did him. If there had been a bit more give in the ground, maybe he would have handled it better.
“A furlong and a half out I thought he had won it - he was travelling really good.”
Clive Cox was delighted with fourth Xtension, who had finished third in the Group One Darley Dewhurst Stakes here in October.
The trainer said: “We’re very much delighted with that performance on his seasonal debut. Adam (Kirby) reported that the horse, naturally, felt a lot stronger today.
“We’ve got all the top mile races covered so we will have a look. If the ground is ok, then perhaps he will go for the Irish 2,000 Guineas. If the ground is not too soft, we will consider it but first we will see how is after this.”
StanJames.com 2000 GUINEAS BEATEN JOCKEY QUOTES
William Buick, on 12th placed Lord Zenith, said: “He ran as expected. He’s a nice horse and he’ll be a nice horse in Group Three company.”
Richard Hills rider of 15th Awzaan said: “He just didn’t perform for whatever reason. I can’t give an opinion on stamina or anything. We will have to get him home and start again. It’s the start of the year and he’s a Group One winner, we’ll be back.”
Steve Drowne, rider of last Elspeth Boy, said: “He was just a bit fresh and may not have stayed in that class.”
Eddie Ahern jockey of the fifth Elusive PimperneI, said: “I suppose drawn one and off a slow pace it just didn’t suit him. They quickened up and went away from me. A faster gallop and a longer trip maybe. I think a mile and a quarter would be the next step.”
Jamie Spencer, rider of 17th Audacity Of Hope, said: “ I’m a bit disappointed about that. He lost a shoe.”
Ahmed Ajtebi on 14th Buzzword, said: “I’m happy with him. With three to go I felt that we would win but he didn’t come out of the dip. He had a hard season last year, running in France and America and it was a tough race today. I think he will win a Group race later in the year.”
O’BRIEN & MORE BEATEN JOCKEY QUOTES IN THE STANJAMES.COM 2000 GUINEAS
Aidan O’Brien, trainer of the red-hot Evens favourite St Nicholas Abbey who finished sixth, said: “I suppose that we would have been delighted to see an even, strong-run race. Johnny said that he jumped in and ideally we would have been happier just to take our time - he said that they did a canter to halfway.
“That’s not taking away from the winner or any other horse in the race. Ideally for this horse, he would have liked an evenly run mile because we were using this as a stepping stone from here to Epsom.
“We trained him all year with Classics in mind. It would have been easy for us to go for a Derby trial but he was working so well and his times were very good at home - they were as good as all of the milers that we have had.
“When you come to a Classic like this, usually they go a pace but we didn’t put in anything to go an even pace in front, which we often do. They hacked to halfway and it will be interesting to see what the times say - Johnny said that they just hacked to halfway and then sprinted.
“St Nicholas Abbey started staying on again at the end. We weren’t winding him up for a mile because we had to think about the rest of the year for him. He is a horse with naturally quick speed and Johnny didn’t want to light him up too much.
“It just didn’t work today but we are happy with the horse.”
Johnny Murtagh, rider of St Nicholas Abbey, blamed a slow early pace for his mount’s defeat. He said: “There was no pace. We jumped out and hacked to the two-furlong marker. I followed Ryan Moore (on Dick Turpin) and he finished second. My mount just stayed on.”
Frankie Dettori talked about Al Zir, ninth in the StanJames.com 2000 Guineas: “It was a good run from him. A mile was too short - they have outsprinted him. He wants further.”
Saeed bin Suroor, Al Zir’s trainer, declared: “It was a disappointing result but I think he will be better in the second half of the season.”
Eddie Ahern, who partnered the fifth Elusive Pimpernel, said: “I was waiting for him to pick up and he didn’t show the acceleration he is capable of. It was the slow pace which did not suit him. I would have preferred a faster-run race where he could have come from off the pace.”

TARTAN BEGINS DAY ON HIGH FOR JOHNSTON
Trainer Mark Johnston, who has high hopes for Awzaan in the StanJames.com 2000 Guineas, began the day on a good note when winning the opening StanJames.com Suffolk Handicap with Tartan Gigha.
The winner represented the executors of the late Isobel Bird, a stalwart of the Johnston stable who died earlier this year.
“It’s a fantastic way to start the Guineas day but, more importantly, it is a huge day for Frank Bird,” said Johnston. “Isobel died on February 17 and this was very much her hobby, something that the rest of the family were on the outskirts of.
“They bravely decided to keep the horses and they have been running well. It’s the first win since she died and so it’s fantastic for Frank. Isobel was a fantastic owner and very close to my wife Deirdre. It was a real sad loss and her family were big into motorbike racing while the horses were Isobel’s thing but it’s great that Frank and the family are here today
“The other horse (fifth-placed Tartan Gunna) ran brilliantly too. Halfway through the race, I turned to Deirdre and said that Tartan Gigha was not himself - he was having to be niggled along and he was a bit warm before the race. So I thought that he had no chance at halfway and that our other horse was coasting with a furlong to go. But Joe said that he maybe hit the front a bit too soon - he is a horse that gets a bit lazy in front - but thankfully Tartan Gigha was there to do it.“
Kieren Fallon added: “It’s the way we wanted to start the day. He’s as tough as nails - I thought that I had gone too soon but he battled on to the line. Mark’s horses are tough and they stay to the line. They are simple to ride and it’s a joy to be on them. It’s good to firm ground out there. This horse likes fast ground and he felt good on it.”

StanJames.com Suffolk Handicap
BUTLER’S ELLIPTICAL THE BRIDESMAID AGAIN
A thrilling finish to the opening StanJames.com Suffolk Handicap saw the Christophe Lemaire-ridden Elliptical go down by a head to Kieren Fallon and Tartan Gigha, with the Andrew Balding-trained Riggins a further neck back in third.
Elliptical had finished second on his previous start at Newbury on April 17, and trainer Gerard Butler was left cursing his luck.
The Egerton Stud trainer said: “You have to be so lucky in these big handicaps. We’ve gone down by a head but I have no complaints. He’s a lovely horse, a great battler with a great heart.
“After he was second at Newbury, we thought we had to come here, running off a mark of 85 in a £50,000 handicap.
“Last year we thought he would be our Cambridgeshire horse but he had a little issue that prevented him getting there. We’ll get him there eventually though.
“He’s going up in the weights without winning and that’s never a good thing but he may be a horse for the John Smith’s Cup at York. A mile and one furlong or a mile and a quarter are ideal for him so the Cambridgeshire could yet be on the cards.”
Andrew Balding was saddling the Jimmy Fortune-ridden Riggins for the first time after the six-year-old was purchased out of Luca Cumani’s yard for 18,000 guineas at Tattersalls in October last year.
He commented: “I’m very pleased with the horse after such a long time off. He could just do with dropping back a furlong.”
GOING AFTER THE FIRST RACE
Kieren Fallon, jockey of the head winner Tartan Gigha, described the ground as: “Fast but safe.”
Christophe Lemaire, rider of second placed Elliptical, said: “Good.”
Tony Hamilton, partner of Albaqaa, said: “It is on the fast side of good but lovely ground.”
Joe Fanning, rider of Tartan Gunna, said: “Good to fast ground but with no jar.”
Marc Halford, rider of Kaolak, said: “Good.”
Hayley Turner, partner of Brunston, thought the going: “Good to firm.”
Ryan Moore, partner of Ithinkbest, said: “Good.”
Simon Pearce, partner of Marvo, said: “It is just on the firm side.”
Louis-Phillip Beuzelin, partner of Negotiation, said: “It is just on the fast side of good.”
Iva Milickova, jockey of Big Bay, said: “Good.”
Second Race - Win Quotes
StanJames.com Jockey Club Stakes (Group Two)
JUKEBOX JURY AT THE DOUBLE
Jukebox Jury provided trainer Mark Johnston with a quickfire near 35/1 double and booked his ticket to the Group One Investec Coronation Cup at Epsom in June with victory in the mile and a half Group Two StanJames.com Jockey Club Stakes.
The grey colt, sent of the 7/4 favourite and sporting a first-time visor, took up the running half a mile from home and, after repelling the initial threat of Godolphin’s Claremont, held runner-up Nanton by three and three-quarter lengths.
Johnston said: “It was heart in mouth stuff for a little while there. Four furlongs was a long, long way out to start racing but Royston had no choice when the Godolphin horse threw down the gauntlet.
“Perhaps that is where the visor came into play because last year he was not a horse that would want to be in front with four furlongs still to race.
“Not to take anything away from him, but Nanton, who was probably considered something of an outsider, finishing in second, perhaps shows that we were racing early enough.
“The Coronation Cup is still on the agenda, perhaps followed by the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown. There were a few derogatory comments when he lined up in the Eclipse last year and one jockey was heard to say that a 50/1 shot got in his way! Maybe they will take note after this.”
Royston Ffrench partnered the colt to victory in the Group One Preis Von Europa last term and again when 15th of 16 in the Dubai Sheema Classic in March, and was once again in the plate.
He said: “I wouldn’t say that he was disappointing in Dubai - he always runs a little rusty on his first start of the year, which he has done in the past, but he bounced back and won today.
“He’s very versatile - you can make the running on him or sit handy. Joe had him on the gallops with the visor on and he said that he just seemed to concentrate a little more. He does have a look round in his races, not that he is ungenuine, and we thought that it was a good idea to keep him focused.
“Dubai was great for me and, to come back to the UK and start off like this, I couldn’t be happier.”
SECOND RACE PLACED QUOTES
StanJames.com JOCKEY CLUB STAKES (GROUP 2)
NANTON DELIGHTS GOLDIE
Eight-year-old Nanton returned better than ever in the Group Two StanJames.com Jockey Club Stakes when finishing three and three-quarter lengths behind impressive winner Jukebox Jury.
“His race fitness will improve and I’m pleased with that run,” said Nanton’s trainer Jim Goldie. “Ryan (Moore) said he just flattened out in the last 100 yards but the favourite was gone by then.
“He’s in the Yorkshire Cup and we may go that route, his Ebor fourth shows he likes a mile and six furlongs at York.”
Godolphin’s Claremont, the 15/8 second favourite, finished third and racing manager Simon Crisford said: “The winner was a better horse on the day but it was a good effort from our horse. He’s run well.”
Fourth Race - Win Quotes
StanJames.com Palace House Stakes (Group Three)
SPEEDY EQUIANO LANDS SPRINT
A revitalised Equiano (5/1) landed his second Newmarket prize of the season when blitzing to victory in the Group Three StanJames.com Palace House Stakes.
The Barry Hills-trained speedster covered the five-furlong distance in a quick time of 58.40s under jockey Michael Hills, running on determinedly to hold the challenge of Borderlescott (8/1) by three-quarters of a length, with the fast-finishing Blue Jack (8/1) half a length back in third.
Winner of the Group One King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot in 2008, Equiano was below par last season but showed his well-being at Newmarket on April 15, when taking the Listed Connaught Flooring Abernant Stakes over six furlongs.
Hills said: “He covered the five furlongs in a little over 58 seconds, which is pretty quick. Michael said he’s in the best form he has ever been.
“He wasn’t at his best last year but sometimes they are like apple trees - sometimes they have more apples than others.
“The King’s Stand Stakes is top of the agenda. Whether he runs before that, I don’t know. There is a race in France that we could look at.”
Borderlescott, victorious in the last two renewals of the Group One Nunthorpe Stakes at York, delighted his Scottish owners, James Edgar and Les Donaldson, in clinching second.
Edgar said: “We’re really pleased. He’s more forward than we thought. I thought he was going to catch the winner going into the dip.
“He’ll go to Haydock for the Group Two Temple Stakes next and then it’s Royal Ascot for the King’s Stand Stakes and hopefully we can turn it around with Equiano.”
Donaldson added: “A third Nunthorpe would be the ultimate. Normally he doesn’t come to himself until July or August but maybe going to Hong Kong back in December has meant that he is more forward this year.”

JACK’S MORE THAN ALL RIGHT
Jack My Boy is evidently a handicapper on the up and bagged his second victory in the space of a week when taking the Belucky@StanJames.com Handicap by a length and a half from 20/1 shot Bagamoyo.
The David Evans-trained colt was sent off at 16/1 for the six-furlong contest and looked anything but a longshot as he scored decisively under apprentice Martin Lane.
Richard Evans, representing his father, said: “He is a lovely horse. He was a lovely horse last year and we didn’t believe he could win over five furlongs but he won his maiden over that trip.
“He has so much ability; he’s so laid back that he’s lazy, that’s why he has got the blinkers on. He was impressive last week at Ripon and he was impressive again today.
“He could be anything but we’ll see what the handicapper does. If he keeps going the right way I would think we will look to run him in all the big sprint handicaps.”
The James Fanshawe-trained Bagamoyo got the better of the 3/1 favourite Horseradish by a short-head in a photo for the minor places.
Fanshawe reported: "He was just short of room but ran very well. This shows us that he’s gone the right way from two to three and I’m very pleased with him. You never quite know what you are up against in this race and I thought we’d get today out of the way before planning ahead."
The stewards found Eddie Ahern, rider of Bagamoyo, guilty of careless riding after he caused interference to the unplaced Hairspray, ridden by Kieren Fallon. Ahern was suspended for one day - Sunday, May 16.
SMITH WINS CAR
A prize of a brand new Ford Fiesta, offered by sponsor Stan James, was presented to Sheren Smith after today’s fifth race.
"I’ve never won anything in my life before. Oh my goodness," said a delighted Smith after Jack My Boy’s win ensured she won the car.

GARDENING LEAVES BOUND FOR ASCOT
A trip to Royal Ascot could be on the cards for Gardening Leave after he sprang a 16/1 surprise when beating Wigmore Hall in the Haveago@StanJames.com Newmarket Stakes.
“I think he got a bad rap on his last run and we were expecting a big improvement as he got tired that day,” said winning trainer Andrew Balding. “He’s done it determinedly today.
“He was big and weak last year but has strengthened up and is a hardy horse. I wasn’t expecting this so I hadn’t thought about where we might go, but possibly the Hampton Court Stakes over a mile and a quarter at Royal Ascot.”
The Michael Bell-trained Wigmore Hall, sent off the 4/6 favourite, was beaten a neck in second.
Bell said: “It was a slightly frustrating race. The way it was run did not play to his strengths but the blessing in disguise is that he gets into the Hampton Court Stakes without a penalty. That is where we will go with him now.
“It was frustrating but the winner might be quite good and I’m pleased with the way he ran on.”

“UNDERRATED” OASIS DANCES
TO SUCCESS
Oasis Dancer collected a cool half-million when winning the lucrative Tattersalls Timeform Million in October and he made it two wins from as many starts on the Rowley Mile course with a resounding triumph in the Lastchancetowin@StanJames.com Handicap.
The grey colt relished the step up to a mile as he drew clear of his 11 rivals for a two-length verdict over the Andrew Balding-trained Balducci, with the John Gosden-trained Kona Coast a further length and a quarter back in third.
Oasis Dancer, fifth on his seasonal return in a Newbury handicap on April 16, was officially rated 93 going into the race.
Winning trainer Ralph Beckett said of the 4/1 winner: “He is a nice horse and he did that well. He is the only two-year-old I have ever trained that has been underrated by the two-year-old handicapper and he won a million pound race in so doing.
“I was sure he wanted the mile and he has done it well. He liked the ground and handled the dip. We will go home and see how he is before making plans.”

GOING NEWS AT 10AM
Today’s going is
GOOD TO FIRM
with a GoingStick reading of 8.7 at 8am this morning.
Michael Prosser, Director of Racing and Clerk of the Course at Newmarket, commented: “We had three millimetres of rain from 4pm yesterday and have had six millimetres in the last 48 hours.
“I’ve left the ground unchanged at Good to Firm and the GoingStick reading is 8.7, compared to 9.1 yesterday afternoon.
“I’m very happy with the ground ahead of today’s racing, 8.7 is where we want to be and they should produce a nice print on the track.
“The forecast for today is for sunny spells and showers through the afternoon. The first shower is predicted to arrive from midday onwards and we are forecast to have three millimetres of rain today.”
Prosser added that there could be a notable change in the going ahead of tomorrow’s racing if the predicted overnight rainfall arrives.
“There is some quite significant rainfall forecast this evening,” he added. “We are in line for 10 millimetres of rain and there is a 20 per chance that we could get 20 millimetres.
“If we get 10 millimetres, then that would be likely to push the ground to Good tomorrow and it could be even softer than that if we received significantly more rainfall.”
The stalls are on the Stands’ Side except for the StanJames.com 2000 Guineas and StanJames.com Jockey Club Stakes, when they will be in the centre.

PAPERS RAISE PROSPECT OF ANOTHER SUPERSTAR AT NEWMARKET TODAY
Sea The Stars won the first Classic of the season, the StanJames.com 2000 Guineas, a year ago and turned out to be a very special horse. He went through 2009 unbeaten and some pundits said he was the greatest horse they had ever seen.
Chris McGrath, writing in today’s Independent, said: “....We stood impatiently at the bus stop for 20 years until Sea The Stars came along; and yet here, apparently, we have another colt (St Nicholas Abbey) already on the same route.....
“....We can all suspect ourselves of asking for the moon, in immediately hailing a possible heir to the epoch-making talent of Sea The Stars. The stakes, for the sport, seem almost too seductive.”
J A (Jim) McGrath in The Daily Telegraph declared: “Form judges will be on champion alert when Saturday's Stan James 2000 Guineas is run at Newmarket. In one of the strongest fields in recent years, the focus of attention is red-hot favourite St Nicholas Abbey, who has been the subject of highly encouraging reports from Ballydoyle.
“Last year, Sea The Stars proved a horse of a lifetime for those associated with him. He won the Guineas, then the Derby and the Eclipse, yet it took until August before the media attention started to intensify.
“The ‘experts’ are not going to be caught out this time. They have had warning that this may be another vintage year, and if St Nicholas Abbey, an unbeaten colt by the outstanding Montjeu, lives up to his home reputation and gallops away with today’s Classic, he will be crowned a champion on the spot. There will be no waiting for the Derby, which, on balance, should suit him better....”
Greg Wood in the Guardian commented: “....No one knows quite what to expect from last year's brilliant champion two-year-old (St Nicholas Abbey), who has been the hot favourite for the first Classic of the season since he cantered home in the Racing Post Trophy in October. Nor does O'Brien, who is as fascinated as anyone by the possibilities. Sea The Stars was a great champion on the Flat last season, and unless or until he is beaten, St Nicholas Abbey could still be another......
“....In the season after Sea The Stars, it will be difficult for any horse to come close to the achievements of John Oxx's colt, never mind match them. One challenge that Sea The Stars ducked, though, not least because his breeding suggested a mile and a half was his limit, was the chance to become the first Triple Crown winner since 1970....”
Rob Wright of The Times wrote: “”It is far too early to suggest that he (St Nicholas Abbey) could be another Sea The Stars, but he looked an exceptional colt last year and will be hard to beat.”
Steve Jones, Templegate of The Sun, said: “All worship the Abbey in the Stan James 2000 Guineas at Newmarket. St Nicholas Abbey is already being compared to last season’s champion Sea The Stars. While that is a bit premature, he can take his first step towards emulating John Oxx’s superstar by landing the opening Classic.”
Sam Turner, in the Daily Mail, has similar sentiments: “A year after the formidable Sea The Stars took Flat racing by storm, St Nicholas Abbey bids to follow in the illustrious footsteps of the six-time Group One winner with victory in today’s 2000 Guineas. While it is premature to begin comparing John Oxx’s dual Classic winner with a horse who has just one Group One to his name, there is no doubt that the son of Montjeu is a horse of immense promise...”
FALLON PASSES DOCTOR
Kieren Fallon, who rides Viscount Nelson for Aidan O’Brien in today’s StanJames.com 2000 Guineas, has been passed fit to ride by the Newmarket course doctor, Dr Andy Mason.
Fallon was stood down after reporting to the doctor at Doncaster yesterday afternoon, citing sickness, after his third place on Najoom Zaman, his second of five booked rides.

Winning jockey:-Name: Fallon, Kieren Francis Date Of Birth: February 22, 1965 Background: Became apprentice to Kevin Prendergast when 17, riding his first winner the following year. Moved to Britain when still an apprentice in 1988, working for Jimmy Fitzgerald and then Lynda Ramsden in 1993. Signed to ride for Henry Cecil in 1996, and became champion jockey for the first time in 1997 with 202 wins, also winning his first two classics. Joined Sir Michael Stoute in 2000 after acrimonious split with Cecil, but suffered a bad fall at Royal Ascot that nearly ended his career, and ruled him out of the rest of the season. Replaced Jamie Spencer as Ballydoyle stable jockey in 2005, although continued to ride for Stoute when allowed. Charged with race-fixing by City of London Police in 2006, and banned from riding in Britain pending trial. Also failed drugs test in France, resulting in worldwide six month ban in the same year. Returned to action in June 2007, although gave up riding in October 2007 to concentrate impending court case. Cleared of attempting to defraud Betfair customers when trial collapsed in December 2007, only to be found guilty of failing a drugs test in France in August 2007. Started riding out for Sir Michael Stoute after being given an 18 month ban and launched his own website.
