PLEASED WITH CLASSIC DAY

Stephen Wallis, managing director of Newmarket Racecourses, said: “It has been a really enjoyable day and there has been a fantastic atmosphere at The NatWest Rowley Mile racecourse.

“We saw a wonderful winner of the stanjamesuk.com 2000 Guineas in Henrythenavigator and the rest of the day’s racing was of a very high standard.

“Now we are looking forward to another excellent day’s racing tomorrow when the stanjamesuk.com 1000 Guineas. is the high point.”

HENRY DETHRONES APPROACH IN EPIC GUINEAS

Trainer Aidan O’Brien landed his fifth stanjamesuk.com 2000 Guineas when winning the 200th running of the Classic after Henrythenavigator battled to beat the 11/8 favourite New Approach by a nose.

New Approach - trained by O’Brien’s former employer Jim Bolger - made virtually all the running but just lost out as the winner, partnered by Johnny Murtagh, hit the front inside the final furlong.

“It was a masterful ride from Johnny, who waited and played the horse to all his strengths. He was very confident and super strong,” said O’Brien. “Henrythenavigator has always been an exceptional work horse at home and the times he got beat last year it was real winter ground - he’s a proper fast ground horse.

“I was worried beforehand because mine have been needing a run this season and we thought he would come on from this, he was only just ready to come racing today.

“Last season we pulled back off him and a lot of the others when we had real National Hunt ground in Ireland and let them be so we wouldn’t damage them.”

Henrythenavigator and New Approach share favouritism at 2/1 with Cashmans and 7/4 with Boylesports for the Irish 2,000 Guineas and O’Brien added: “When you have a horse like him that shows so much speed you are never sure if he is a miler. Speed is his big thing and I think we will keep him to a mile. Today was his first test over a mile on fast ground so I’m delighted.”

Murtagh added: “When I saw the furlong marker I knew I had enough time to get there, I was just hoping I was good enough and fortunately he was but the second kept battling back at me and they are two very high-class horses.

“Mine is a very good horse with a decent turn of foot and this is a great start to my new job - I’m a very lucky person.

“Aidan told me to drop him in and the race rode pretty well, I was just travelling in between horses. He is a horse with loads of pace, after all he won the Coventry as two-year-old last year.”

The victory was the first by a nose, a new distance introduced last year, in a British Classic.

NEW APPROACH STILL ON COURSE FOR IRISH GUINEAS WHILE RAVEN’S PASS WILL STICK TO SPRINTING

Trainer Jim Bolger was gracious in defeat as he saw New Approach beaten for the first time. He confirmed that the 11/8 favourite, who went down by a nose, i still on courese for the Irish 2,000 Guineas.

He said: “I’m pleased with the way he travelled and he was coming back at the winner at the end. They are two very good horses. Obviously, it would have been nice to have won but I’m still happy.”

David Elsworth said of his 100/1 shot Stubbs Art, who finished third: “we are disappointed we didn’t win. Everyobne can read the formbook bu this horse had a great chance.

“He’s lost a hind plate but I don’t know whether that’s relevant. Part of us is pleased but part of us is frustrated as well.”

John Gosden said that the fourth Raven’s Pass will drop back in trip.

The trainer remarked: “He ran great. They raced across on the stands’ rail as we thought they might. He’s come from last and run a very good race.

“I would definitely question his stamina in the last half furlong and the plan is to go to the Jersey Stakes (seven furlongs Royal Ascot) and then run him in the Darley July Cup (Newmarket).

“He wants to go faster than they’re going. Seven furlongs is no problem and the stiff six of the July Cup will suit him.”

BEATEN GUINEAS QUOTES
Jimmy Fortune, on board the fourth Raven’s Pass, said “ He ran well and tried hard.”

Martin Dwyer, on the fifth Dream Eater, declared: “I was very happy with that. It would have been better if he had had a prep race. He will come on for the run. It was a very good race. I thought he was going to be third but he will be good fun this summer.”

Richard Quinn, rider of the sixth Moynahan, declared: “He has run well. He is an inexperienced horse and got himself a bit unbalanced coming down into the dip but he has met the rising ground and lengthened.”

Steve Drowne, on the seventh Stimulation, said: “He ran well - it was an awkward race as they all tracked over to the stands’ side. I went to pick him up but he came up a bit flat.”

Mick Kinane, who partnered the Aidan O’Brien second string Plan, finished eighth. He commented: “He has run all right. He is a bit inexperienced but he is horse who will improve a nice bit.”

Frankie Dettori, who partnered the tenth Ibn Khaldun, commented: “He ran very flat and was beaten three and a half furlongs out.”

Richard Hughes, who partnered the Scintillo, said afterwards: “ He ran his race and ran well.”

Richard Hills on 13th placed Alfathaa said: “He ran well, I thought he might finish a bit better, but there are no complaints.

Fireside’s jockey Alan Munro reflected on coming last of 15: “That was not his running. He ran a bit to free early on and then stopped. We are going to have him looked at to see if there is a problem.”

WHIP BANS

The jockeys on the first two home in today’s 200th running of the stanjamesuk.com 2000 Guineas received whip bans.

The stewards found that Johnny Murtagh on the winner Henrythenavigator used his whip with excessive frequency and had not given the colt time to respond. He was banned for two days - Sunday and Monday, May 18 & 19.

Kevin Manning, on the second New Approach, was also considered to have used his whip with excessive frequency, without giving the horse time to respond, and after the winning post. He was suspended for five days - Saturday to Wednesday - May 17 to 21 inclusive.

The stewards would have liked to interview Seb Sanders, rider of the third Stubbs Art, too about his use of the whip but he had left the course. His hearing will be held at a later date.

GREAT RESULT FOR SPONSOR

Laura Stephens, PR Manager for Stan James UK, reported that the result of the Classic, with 11/1 chance Henrythenavigator beating 11/8 favourite New Approach, was a great one.

She said: “This has been the best result in the three years that we have sponsored the stanjamesuk.com 2000 Guineas.

“It would have been the worst if New Approach had prevailed as he was backed all winter, over the last few weeks and today.”

GROUND UPDATE

Light rain is predicted this evening and the going remains GOOD ahead of tomorrow’s racing.

“We are forecast approximately one millimetre of rain tonight which should help refresh the ground and keep the going at Good,” said Newmarket’s clerk of the course Michael Prosser.

“The forecast is uncertain for tomorrow, there will be a bit of cloud cover but it should be pleasantly warm with a temperature of 20 degrees.

“It’s been an excellent day’s racing today with a high-class renewal of the stanjamesuk.com 2000 Guineas supported by a strong card.”

THE WINNER HENRYTHENAVIGATOR (USA) 11/1

b c Kingmambo(USA) - Sequoyah(IRE) (Sadler's Wells (USA))

Form: 1123-1 Owner: Sue Magnier
Trainer: Aidan O’Brien IRE Jockey: Johnny Murtagh Breeder: Western Bloodstock

Henrythenavigator
Out of Group One Moyglare Stud Stakes heroine Sequoyah, Henrythenavigator took little time to make his mark as a juvenile, scoring on his debut against eight rivals in a seven-furlong maiden on fast ground at Gowran Park on May 6, 2007. Ridden by Seamus Heffernan, the Kingmambo colt was soon in command and announced himself as one of Ballydoyle’s most promising prospects with an impressive seven-length victory. Reappearing at Royal Ascot, Henrythenavigator was sent off a warm 11/4 favourite for the first race of the meeting, the Group Two Coventry Stakes over six furlongs. With Michael Kinane in the saddle, Henrythenavigator took a keen hold on his way to the start but was towards the front of the 20-runner field before taking up the running entering the final furlong to record a workmanlike three quarters of a length victory over Swiss Franc. Having encountered good to firm going on both his starts, he experiencedd testing conditions in the first Group One two-year-old race of the season, the Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh on August 12. Taking up the running with a furlong left under Kieren Fallon, Henrythenavigator stayed on in the closing stages but was unable to repel the challenge of the filly Saoirse Abu in the closing stages, and eventually finished a length behind the Jim Bolger-trained runner on the tacky ground. Another Bolger-trained runner took the honours on Henrythenavigator’s final juvenile appearance in the Group Two Futurity Stakes at the Curragh two weeks later. New Approach, fresh from success in the Group Three Tyros Stakes the previous month, made all of the running and recorded a comprehensive three-length success over subsequent Group Two Beresford Stakes victor Curtain Call, with Henrythenavigator, again racing on ground softer than ideal, a neck further back in third. He won the stanjamesuk.com 2000 Guineas today. Race Record: Starts: 5; 1st 3; 2nd: 1; 3rd: 1 Win & Place Prize Money: £212,768.50

Sue Magnier
Few in the racing world can boast better connections than Sue Magnier. Her husband John is the most powerful man in the bloodstock world as owner of the global Coolmore breeding empire and she is daughter of arguably the greatest 20th century trainer, Vincent O'Brien, who saddled three consecutive Grand National winners and six Derby winners. Her brother David O'Brien is another Derby-winning handler while another brother, Charles, is also a successful trainer. In the 1970s John Magnier (born February 10, 1948), the son of a Co Cork dairy farmer and stud owner, teamed up with the late Robert Sangster and trainer Vincent O'Brien with the idea of buying potential stallions as yearlings. This they did with great success, counting Alleged, Be My Guest, Caerleon, El Gran Senor, Golden Fleece, Sadler's Wells and Storm Bird amongst those who were bought or bred. Magnier subsequently bought out his partners at Coolmore - which now has huge offshoots in Australia and America - and owns the nearby magnificent Ballydoyle training stable. He has a myriad of other business interests, mainly with top jump owner J P McManus and the duo held a 28.7% stake in Manchester United FC, which they sold to American tycoon Malcolm Glazer. The pair have also invested in the Barchester chain of nursing homes, Castlebeck care homes, a property company that owns Unilever House in London, leisure clubs, including the Chelsea Harbour Club, the Sandy Lane Hotel in Barbados and Global Radio, the media company run by Michael Tabor’s son Ashley. Magnier’s fortune is estimated at £746 million in the 2008 Sunday Times Rich List. London-born and Monaco-based Michael Tabor, who founded the Arthur Prince bookmaking firm before selling it for £28 million in 1995, is a partner in many of the Coolmore horses. Like Magnier, Tabor spends much of the winter in Barbados and became a partner in many of the Coolmore horses in the mid 1990s after his Thunder Gulch won the 1995 Kentucky Derby. Tabor is valued at £620 million in the Sunday Times Rich List and his colt Entrepreneur, trained by Sir Michael Stoute, took the 1997 stanjamesuk.com 2000 Guineas to provide a first British Classic success for the Sue Magnier/Tabor partnership, who also won that season's Irish equivalent and Irish Derby with Desert King. The duo won the Epsom Derby in 2001 and 2002 with Galileo and High Chaparral. In partnership with Sir Alex Ferguson, Magnier owned Rock Of Gibraltar, who won seven successive Group One victories including the 2002 2,000 Guineas. Other major wins include the 1998 2,000 Guineas with King Of Kings, the 1999 French Derby, Irish Derby, Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe and the 2000 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes with Montjeu and a run of five consecutive Group One successes in 2000 from Giant's Causeway. Galileo also won the Irish Derby and King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes after his 2001 Epsom win, while further British Classic glory has come in the Ladbrokes St Leger with Milan (2001), Brian Boru (2003) and Scorpion (2005). High Chaparral, who went on to take the 2002 Irish Derby, also landed that year's Breeders' Cup Turf and then dead-heated in the same event 12 months later. In 2004, Derrick Smith, a former Ladbrokes trading director based in Barbados, joined Tabor as a Coolmore investor. Smith is valued at £750 million in the Sunday Times Rich List and his own colours have been carried to Group One success aboard Simply Perfect, Astronomer Royal and Mount Nelson. The Magnier/Tabor/Smith partnership retained Kieren Fallon as its jockey from February, 2005, although - with Fallon banned from riding - Johnny Murtagh took on that role this season. In 2005, Coolmore won both the 2000 Guineas with Footstepsinthesand and the 1,000 Guineas with Virginia Waters, while Hurricane Run took the Irish Derby and Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. George Washington, winner of the 2000 Guineas in 2006, was the star of the show that year, while Alexandrova took the Oaks at Epsom. Last year, the Coolmore empire's successes include the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe with Dylan Thomas, the Irish Derby with Soldier Of Fortune, the Irish Oaks, Nassau Stakes and Yorkshire Oaks with Peeping Fawn and the French 2,000 Guineas with Astronomer Royal In the US, the Coolmore-owned Rags To Riches became the first filly for 102 years to win the Belmont Stakes. The Coolmore team won the first European Group One of 2008 on Sunday when Duke Of Marmalade landed the Prix Lupin at Longchamp. stanjamesuk.com 2000 Guineas winners: 2008 Henrythenavigator, 2006 George Washington (with Michael Tabor & Derrick Smith), 2005 Footstepsinthesand (with Michael Tabor), 2002 Rock Of Gibraltar (with Sir Alex Ferguson), 1998 King Of Kings (with Michael Tabor), 1997 Entrepreneur (with Michael Tabor)

Aidan O'Brien IRE
Born in Wexford on October 16, 1969, Aidan Patrick O'Brien has been phenomenally successful in his relatively short training career. After a spell with Jim Bolger, he became assistant to his now wife, Anne-Marie, and her father Joe Crowley, before taking over the reins when granted a licence to train himself in 1993. His impact on the Flat was made with backing of the highest calibre in the shape of John Magnier and Coolmore, who offered O'Brien the use of Ballydoyle Stables, where the trainer's namesake, legendary Irish handler Vincent O'Brien, had enjoyed so much success. In 1997, in only his third season at the helm of the Tipperary yard, he confirmed his intentions on the Flat when winning the Irish 1,000 Guineas, the Irish 2,000 Guineas and Irish Derby. The following year, his first British Classic runner, King Of Kings, won the stanjamesuk.com 2000 Guineas and the second, Shahtoush, finished runner-up in the following day's stanjamesuk.com 1000 Guineas and went on to land the Epsom Oaks a month later. The successes have since flowed thanks to the likes of Giant's Causeway (five successive Group Ones in 2000), Saffron Walden, Stravinsky, Fasliyev and an embarrassment of riches in 2001 that yielded 23 Group One successes headed by the Epsom Derby and the Irish Derby, as well as the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, with Galileo. Other Classic glory came via Imagine (Irish 1,000 Guineas and Vodafone Oaks), Black Minnaloushe (Irish 2,000 Guineas), Rose Gypsy (French 1,000 Guineas) and Milan (Ladbrokes St Leger) while Mozart became champion sprinter and O'Brien totally dominated the two-year-old division as Johannesburg provided him with a first Breeders' Cup success in the 2001 Juvenile at Belmont Park. He was champion trainer in both Britain and Ireland in 2001 and 2002. In 2002 he enjoyed success with the remarkable Rock Of Gibraltar (the only horse to win seven European Group Ones in a row including the 2000 Guineas) and also the dual Derby and Breeders' Cup winner High Chaparral. His prowess on the Flat is matched by his achievements with his jumpers. He will forever be associated with Istabraq, winner of three Champion Hurdles. Rock Of Gibraltar and Hawk Wing gave O'Brien a 1-2 in the 2002 stanjamesuk.com 2000 Guineas while High Chaparral and Hawk Wing provided him with the first and second in the 2002 Epsom Derby. The following season he sent out Yesterday to win the Irish 1,000 Guineas and Brian Boru triumphed at Doncaster in the Ladbrokes St Leger. O'Brien enjoyed further success with Hawk Wing in the Lockinge Stakes and High Chaparral in the Irish Champion Stakes and Breeders' Cup Turf in 2003. It was an indifferent season for the Ballydoyle team in 2004, but O'Brien was still successful in the Shadwell Stud Middle Park Stakes with Ad Valorem and the Tattersalls Gold Cup with Powerscourt. He enjoyed an incredible Classic double at Newmarket in the spring of 2005 when he won both the stanjamesuk.com 2000 Guineas (Footstepsinthesand) and the stanjamesuk.com 1000 Guineas (Virginia Waters), and added a third British Classic with Scorpion's success in the Ladbrokes St Leger at Doncaster. Oratorio captured the Coral-Eclipse Stakes and Irish Champion Stakes, and O'Brien also unleashed a raft of high-class two-year-olds, ending the season with the top-rated European juvenile colt (George Washington) and filly (Rumplestiltskin). George Washington captured the stanjamesuk.com 2,000 Guineas and Queen Elizabeth II Stakes in 2006, while Alexandrova took the Epsom Oaks as well as the Irish and Yorkshire equivalents, and Dylan Thomas won the Irish Derby and Irish Champion Stakes. O'Brien enjoyed further Classic success in 2007 with Soldier Of Fortune in the Irish Derby, Peeping Fawn in the Irish Oaks and Astronomer Royal in the French 2,000 Guineas, while Dylan Thomas collected the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes and the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. O’Brien was champion trainer for the third time in Britain last season. stanjamesuk.com 2000 Guineas Record: 1998-1 KING OF KINGS, 1999-15 Orpen , 2000-2 Giant's Causeway, 2000-26 Bernstein, 2001-4 Minardi, 2001-13 Darwin, 2002-1 ROCK OF GIBRALTAR, 2002-2 Hawk Wing, 2002-18 Sholokhov, 2002-20 Tendulkar, 2003-8 Tomahawk, 2003-17 Hold That Tiger, 2004-9 Tumblebrutus, 2004-13 One Cool Cat, 2005-1 FOOTSTEPSINTHESAND,, 2005-4 Oratorio, 2006-1 GEORGE WASHINGTON, 2006-8 Horatio Nelson, 2006-13 Frost Giant, 2007-4 Duke Of Marmalade, 2007-5 Eagle Mountain, 2007-11 Yellowstone, 2008-1HENRYTHENAVIGATOR, 2007-8 Plan

Johnny Murtagh
Born in Co Meath, Ireland, on May 14, 1970, Johnny Murtagh, who is married to Orla and has five children, was apprenticed to John Oxx and became Irish champion apprentice in 1989. He suffered drink problems early in his career but in 1995 he became Irish champion jockey(he was also champion in 1996 and 1998) and has since gained international prominence, riding in Dubai during the winter (where he has been champion rider), winning the 1995 Breeders' Cup Mile on Ridgewood Pearl and the following year's Beverly D Stakes on Timarida. He enjoyed a phenomenal international season in 2000, winning 12 Group Ones in six different countries, partnering Sinndar to victory in both the Vodafone Derby and Irish Derby and then the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, winning the Irish Oaks, Yorkshire Oaks and Prix de l'Opera on Petrushka and the Emirates Airline Champion Stakes and Breeders' Cup Turf on Kalanisi among others. He was the most successful rider at Royal Ascot in 2001 with five wins, including the Gold Cup on Royal Rebel and St James's Palace Stakes on Black Minnaloushe, aboard whom he also won the 2002 Irish 2,000 Guineas. He won the 2002 stanjamesuk.com 2000 Guineas for Aidan O'Brien on Sir Alex Ferguson's Rock Of Gibraltar and landed a second Vodafone Derby on what again seemed the O'Brien second string, High Chaparral, and landed a third renewal of that Classic with Motivator in 2005. In 2003 he won the Budweiser Irish Derby on Alamshar and took a break in the summer to sort out problems with his back and weight. He stepped down from being stable jockey to John Oxx and had a short-lived spell as stable jockey to David Loder. Murtagh rode over hurdles in the 2005/06 season and came close to riding a Cheltenham Festival winner when second on Golden Cross in the 2006 Ladbrokes World Hurdle. Among his Group One victories last year were Dylan Thomas (King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes), Peeping Fawn (Yorkshire Oaks, Nassau Stakes & Irish Oaks), Soldier’s Tale (Golden Jubilee Stakes), Simply Perfect (Falmouth Stakes) and Notnowcato (Tattersalls Gold Cup). With Kieren Fallon currently out of action due to failing a drugs test in France, Murtagh was announced as the retained rider for Ballydoyle earlier this year. stanjamesuk.com 2000 Guineas Record: 2001-17 Tempest, 2002-1 ROCK OF GIBRALTAR, 2003-8 Tomahawk, 2004-6 Salford City, 2005-4 Oratorio, 2006-13 Frost Giant, 2007-11 Yellowstone, 2008-1HENRYTHENAVIGATOR.

FIRST RACE QUOTES
STAN JAMES 08000 383384 HANDICAP

DUNTULUM BY A NECK

Duntulum overcame a tardy start in the opening Stan James 08000 383384 Handicap to land the mile contest by a neck from the fast-finishing Flawed Genius.

“He battled well when they came to him and thank God the penny has dropped with him,” said winning trainer Henry Candy.

“When I bought him for Mr Barr I said that I thought he was a staying horse, especially as he comes from the family of Time Charter. But he doesn’t get a yard over a mile and he actually ran a very good race in the Zetland Stakes here last year given the trip was too far.

“He’ll go for a handicap at Royal Ascot but might need some practice beforehand - he wasn’t total child’s play in the parade ring beforehand and he’s never done what he did in the stalls before. But he’s a boy with lots of ability.”

Winning jockey Dane O’Neill added: “I just shouted to the starter to hang on for a moment because my horse was not ready but he had let them go. He’s got great cruising speed and I elected not to make up my ground too quick and I was happy with where I was at halfway. He has done well from two to three and was always going to be a stronger horse this year.”

Sir Michael Stoute was pleased with the efforts of Flawed Genius. He said: “I'm delighted with him. He travelled well and came home well."

John Dunlop, trainer of third-placed Perks, a wide-margin winner last time out at Doncaster said: "We were a little unfortunate."

DROWNE BANNED

Steve Drowne was found guilty of careless riding aboard Prime Exhibit in the first race and banned for two days on Sunday, May 18, and Monday, May 19.

JOCKEYS REPORT GOOD GROUND AFTER THE FIRST

Ryan Moore, jockey of second placed Flawed Genius, reported the going to be “on the fast side of good”.

Joe Fanning thought the ground was “Good.”

Ted Durcan said about the going “It is on the fast side.”

Steve Drowne said of the going “It is lovely ground, Good going.”

Martin Dwyer thought the ground “Good.”

Seb Sanders reported “Good ground.”

Greg Fairley described the going as “Good.”

HEAVENLY START TO CLASSIC WEEKEND FOR LEADING BRITISH STUD

Heaven Sent provided the perfect start to Guineas weekend for owners/breeders Cheveley Park Stud, who have Infallible and Spacious in tomorrow’s stanjamesuk.com 1000 Guineas.

The five-year-old mare took the stanjamesuk.com G3 Dahlia Stakes by three lengths.

Winning jockey Ryan Moore said: “It was a bit messy early on. She led for a while and was able to get into a nice rhythm and she was picking up all the way. She’ll get a mile and a quarter. We’ve got a Group 3 in the bag and we’ll see where she can go from there.”

PASSAGE NEEDS TIME

Trainer Henry Cecil was far from disheartened by Passage Of Time’s run when fourth of six home in the Group Three Dahlia Stakes.

“She’s been showing up well at home but hadn’t come in her coat and often seems to need a race,” said Cecil. “I said that in the paper this morning. She was only fifth on her first run at Yarmouth as a two-year-old and then only just scraped home in the Musidora last year. I’m not sure where she’ll go next.”

Runner-up Harvest Queen could have her next start at Epsom in June. Trainer Peter Makin said: “She could either go for a race at the Dante meeting at York or the Princess Elizabeth at Epsom, where I’d rather go because she should have won the race last year and it gives us a bit more time.”

BIG SPRINT HANDICAPS BECKON
FOR OFF THE RECORD

James Given, trainer of 25/1 winner Off The Record, said: “One of the owners is on the Orient Express and one is Portugal but I’ve spoken to Peter Onslow briefly and he said ‘get the Pattern Book out’ and that’s when I hung up on him!

“Richard Hughes mentioned the Dash at Epsom but I wouldn’t know about the action of the horse at Epsom. But he’s got options in all those big handicaps now: the Stewards’ Cup, Ayr Gold Cup, the Wokingham and then even Pattern company.”

“He’s a half-brother to Moorhouse Lad and we’ve left him entire so if he can step up, he might have a job at stud, however small, one day.

Brian Bedford, owner of Damika who finished a head behind the winner, was thrilled with the gelding’s run. He said: “He’s a super horse. We bought him from Ireland two or three years ago and he’s progressed gradually but very positively in that time. He’s bang in form and he’s the best horse in the yard.”

Tim Etherington, trainer of third-placed Fullandby, said: “I’m absolutely delighted with this run, especially off 101. I just suspect that we maybe want to go back to five furlongs. He was very, very keen throughout the race and that takes a little bit of doing against these horses. Perhaps we should take him back to a stiff five.”

FIFTH RACE QUOTES

KANDAHAR IMPRESSES

The Henry Cecil-trained Kandahar Run received quotes as short as 14/1 (with Cashmans and Vcbet) for victory in next month’s Vodafone Derby after running away with the stanjamesuk.com/casino Newmarket Stakes by two and three-quarter lengths.

“He stays well and just thought he’d done enough when he quickened today. He thought he’d won the race,” said Cecil. “He was a bit fresh last time and we’ll definitely see if he gets a mile and a half. There are no immediate plans for him, he’s in the King Edward VII Stakes and races like that - we’ll just have to see.”

Mick Channon saddled both the runner-up Meeriss and third-placed Better Hand.
"I'm very pleased with them, they've run their races. I've got no plans for them, we'll see how they come out of this but I think the winner's a good horse,” said Channon.

SIXTH RACE QUOTES
STAN JAMES ON TELETEXT 630 HANDICAP

DR IMPRESSES

The Sir Michael Stoute-trained Dr Faustus looked a colt with a big future after justifying 5/4 favouritism to take the Stan James On Teletext 630 Handicap by three and a half lengths from Ramona Chase.

Winning jockey Ryan Moore said: “It was a bad race and he had the run of it. He stayed on nicely but I don’t think it was much of a race.”

Trainer Sylvester Kirk was delighted with the runner-up’s performance. “I was just happy to see him settle over that trip - I was worried beforehand that he would get anchored,” said Kirk.

“I think we’ve bumped into a nice horse today and we were having to give him 3lb. The mile and a quarter trip is perfect for him and ideally he’d have liked a quicker pace today.”

Seventh race 5.45pm
The stanjamesuk.com/casino Handicap Stakes

AJAAN PREVAILS IN EVENTFUL FINALE

An action-packed final race of the day saw the winner Ajaan collide initially with third-placed Silver Suitor then eventual runner-up Camps Bay in the closing stages and recovered to win by a head.

Ajaan, however, kept the race after a stewards’ inquiry, providing Henry Cecil with a double on 2000 Guineas day.

The stewards found that the interference was accidental and the places remained unaltered.

The decision was greeted with dismay by some racegoers who booed the announcement.

Amanda Perrett, trainer of second-placed Camps Bay, said: “I haven’t seen the replay but it didn’t look good. He nearly knocked us over twice. Poor Jim (Crowley) was visibly shaken.”

Both Ted Durcan, who rode the winner, and Jim Crowley, were banned for four days for careless riding, having allowed their mounts to hang towards each other. The bans will take place from May 18 to 21 inclusive.
