65 FOR BGC SUSSEX STAKES AT GLORIOUS GOODWOOD

* Laffon-Parias would like to run French Guineas victor Falco *

This year’s renewal of the £300,000 BGC Sussex Stakes has attracted an extremely healthy entry of 65, up from 51 in 2007.

The prestigious Group One contest, for the best milers in Europe, takes place on day two of Glorious Goodwood, Wednesday, July 30 - Sir Peter O’Sullevan Day.

There are 24 entries from Ireland, four from France and one from South Africa.

The French entries are headed by Falco, trained by Carlos Laffon-Parias and impressive in this season’s Group One Poule d’Essai des Poulains (the French 2,000 Guineas) at Longchamp on May 18 when he proved three lengths too good for Godolphin’s Rio De La Plata.

The Chantilly-based handler said today: “We’ve entered Falco in the BGC Sussex Stakes. He’s going to Royal Ascot for the St James’s Palace Stakes and we could go to Goodwood depending on how he runs there.

“He worked for the first time since his Longchamp victory on Monday and he looks well. I was pleased with that win but we were expecting him to run well because he has always shown us a lot of ability.

“They went very fast in the Poulains and you have to be near the front on the mile track at Longchamp with 20 runners because it is difficult to come from behind. But he can run from off the pace as well.

“Obviously it’s up to the owners, but I would love to run Falco in the UK because I think it is the best place to win a Group One.

“I was impressed with Henrythenavigator in the Irish 2,000 Guineas and I would like to see him race against Falco sometime this season. At the moment, Zarkava seems to be the best of the fillies, but we don’t really know who is the better colt.

“One day we will have to run together and see who is better. Falco is a very good horse but it is difficult to compare the two colts without seeing them run together.

“Falco’s a late horse and is still improving with every race. He’s a very big fellow so he needs his works and he’s getting better with every start.

“I’ve had one runner at Goodwood, Struggler who ran in the Group Three King George Stakes in 1995, and it’s a beautiful course. I think Falco would cope with the unique demands of the course, as Longchamp is also a pretty demanding track.”

Aidan O’Brien, who went close to landing a third BGC Sussex Stakes last year with Excellent Art, has entered 20 in 2008, the highest number of any trainer. The pick of the Irish handler’s contenders is the very talented English and Irish 2,000 Guineas victor Henrythenavigator.

There is also last season’s French 2,000 Guineas hero Astronomer Royal, Duke Of Marmalade, who has won twice at Group One level already in 2008, Listen, successful in the Group One Fillies’ Mile at Ascot in 2007, and US Ranger. O’Brien’s two previous BGC Sussex Stakes victories came courtesy of Giant’s Causeway in 2000 and Rock Of Gibraltar in 2002.

Dermot Weld could run the Irish 1,000 Guineas second and third Mad About You and Carribean Sunset, while Jim Bolger has entered last season’s English and Irish 1,000 Guineas victress Finsceal Beo and Kevin Prendergast may be represented by Haatef, successful in the Group Two Diadem Stakes at Ascot last season.

The three other French-trained entries are the star filly Darjina, a three-time Group One winner in 2007 for trainer Alain de Royer Dupre and the promising second to stable companion Sageburg in the Group One Prix d’Ispahan on her seasonal reappearance on May 18 as well as Yorktown, who finished fourth behind Falco at Longchamp, from Jean Claude Rouget’s powerful stable

Mike de Kock supplies the South African challenger in Archipenko, who has proved a real globetrotting star this year by winning the Group Two Al Fahidi Fort at Nad Al Sheba in Dubai and the Group One Audemars Piguet QE II Cup at Sha Tin, Hong Kong, on April 27. The trainer is no stranger to the BGC Sussex Stakes, having sent out Asiatic Boy to finish fourth last year.

A thrilling finish to the 2007 BGC Sussex Stakes saw Godolphin’s Ramonti prevail by a head from Excellent Art. Ramonti is one of 10 entries for Godolphin in 2008 and could bid to become the first horse to win back-to-back renewals of the BGC Sussex Stakes.

The racing entity of the Maktoum family could also be represented by recent Group One Juddmonte Lockinge Stakes victor Creachadoir, Alexandros, Blue Ksar, Calming Influence, Fateh Field, Ibn Khaldun, Il Warrd, McCartney and Rio De La Plata, successful as a juvenile in the Group Two Veuve Clicquot Vintage Stakes at Glorious Goodwood last season. Godolphin also won the BGC Sussex Stakes with Aljabr in 1999 and Noverre in 2001.

No current handler can boast as good a BGC Sussex Stakes record as Henry Cecil who has recorded four victories, thanks to Bolkonski (1975), Wollow (1976), Kris (1979) and Ali-Royal (1997). Cecil has entered Twice Over, who appeared to fail to stay an extended 10 furlongs in York’s Dante Stakes after winning the Craven Stakes at Newmarket, and Phoenix Tower, a winner of four of his five starts and runner-up last time out behind Creachadoir in the Group One Juddmonte Lockinge Stakes.

Fellow Newmarket handler Sir Michael Stoute also has an enviable record in the BGC Sussex Stakes, having landed the spoils with Sonic Lady (1986), Zilzal (1989) and Among Men (1998). This year the master of Freemason Lodge could be represented by Linngari, a Group One winner in Italy last year, Rob Roy and Heaven Sent, who created a very favourable impression on her last start when landing the Group Three Dahlia Stakes at Newmarket.

Mick Channon, the leading trainer at Goodwood in 2007, has four entries as he bids for a first success in the BGC Sussex Stakes. The best of the East Ilsley quartet would appear to be Majestic Roi, successful in the Group One Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket last season, and Nahoodh, who had no luck in running when fifth in the 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket.

Other interesting entries include Stubbs Art, third to Henrythenavigator in both the English and Irish 2,000 Guineas, while two fillies from the English 1,000 Guineas who could head to Goodwood are fourth Infallible and the John Dunlop-trained Muthabara, who finished eighth after winning impressively on her seasonal reappearance in the Group Three Fred Darling Stakes at Newbury.

Winker Watson was unbeaten in three starts last year, including in Group Two contests at Royal Ascot and Newmarket and is an interesting contender from the Peter Chapple-Hyam yard.

Glorious Goodwood takes place over five days, from Tuesday, July 29, through to Saturday, August 2, and is the highlight of the year. Advance bookings can be made by going to www.goodwood.co.uk

TATTERSALLS EXTENDS TATTERSALLS TIMEFORM MILLIONS

* New Race and More Prize Money for Valuable Sales Race Series *

Tattersalls, Europe's leading bloodstock auctioneers, has announced a new six-furlong £250,000 race to be added to the Tattersalls Timeform Millions races which are open to graduates of Book 1 of the 2008 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale. The race, which will take place at Newmarket's NatWest Rowley Mile Racecourse in September 2009, will be known as the Tattersalls Timeform Millions Sprint.

The addition will increase the number of races in the Tattersalls Timeform Millions series to four with the total prize money climbing £100,000 to a massive £2,300,000. At the same time the Newmarket-based auctioneers will commit an unprecedented £680,000 to the £2,300,000 prize money while also reducing the owners' entry costs from £10,000 to £6,000.

The £250,000 Tattersalls Timeform Millions Sprint will be fully funded by Tattersalls, as will the 10-furlong Tattersalls Timeform 3YO Trophy which will have its prize money reduced from £400,000 to £250,000. Prize money for the flagship Tattersalls Timeform Million and Tattersalls Timeform Fillies' 800, both run over seven furlongs, will remain at £1,000,000 and £800,000 respectively.

Commenting on the changes, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony said; “The six- furlong Tattersalls Timeform Millions Sprint will add an entirely new dimension to the Tattersalls Timeform Millions and will ensure unrivalled opportunities for owners of yearlings purchased at Book 1 of our October Yearling Sale.

“As well as adding a new £250,000 race and more prize money to the series, we have increased our own guaranteed contribution from £275,000 to £680,000 while significantly reducing the owners' entry costs from £10,000 to £6,000.

“No other sales race series comes close to this in terms of value for money for owners. Prize money levels continue to be a major concern and we are delighted to be able to create a series of races which maximise the opportunities for owners to run for huge prize money while keeping their costs down as much as possible.”

Racehorse Owners Association President Paul Dixon greeted the news with enthusiasm, saying; “Tattersalls continues to explore new ways in which to provide opportunities for our members and the new race, their increased prize money contribution, as well as the significant reduction in entry costs tick all the boxes as far as owners are concerned.

“We worked closely with Tattersalls in framing the original Tattersalls Millions series and these changes reflect the commitment from Tattersalls to the needs of the industry as a whole.”

Michael Prosser, Newmarket Racecourses Director of Racing, said; “Newmarket Racecourses are delighted to further develop their partnership with Tattersalls through the exciting addition of the Tattersalls Timeform Millions Sprint. It is entirely appropriate that this fantastic series of races is being staged at Newmarket, the home of racing and the home of Tattersalls, whose guaranteed contribution of £680,000 is unprecedented in the history of sales races.”

He added: “The new Tattersalls Timeform Millions Sprint will further enhance the £2,300,000 series. Judging by the large number of entries at the recent forfeit stage for the inaugural races in 2008 and 2009, the Tattersalls Timeform Millions has already caught the imagination of owners and trainers and we are excited by the prospect of hosting what are sure to be competitive and thrilling events.”

Book 1 of the 2008 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, sponsored by Betfair, will take place Tuesday 7th - Friday 10th October and is expected to number approximately 750 yearlings.
