GIVEN CONFIDENT LADY GLORIA CAN IMPROVE FURTHER AT GOODWOOD

GROUND GOOD TO SOFT

Strong entries have been received for Goodwood’s two days of racing on Friday, May 30 and Saturday, May 31. The feature race is Saturday’s Listed On The House Stakes (3.35pm) over a mile, which has attracted 19 entries.

Lincolnshire trainer James Given is hoping that summer remains at bay for another week as he looks to run the smart four-year-old Lady Gloria in that £30,000 contest.

The Diktat filly, successful in a nine-furlong Listed contest on testing ground at Fontainebleau, France in November, made a pleasing seasonal bow over the course and distance when runner-up to Enforce in a hot renewal of the Listed betdirect.com EBF Conqueror Stakes on May 3.

Given revealed this morning: “The plan is to go to Goodwood for the On The House Stakes but it is ground dependent - ideally she would need it soft. We have had some rain but whether or not we get more, I don’t know. She will probably run on good ground but she really needs soft ground to show her best form.

“I was delighted with her first run of the season at Goodwood last time. I think there is certainly more improvement to come from her when she gets her ground.

“She is in good heart and the mile is spot on for her, so we will hope for the rain and see what happens.”

Godolphin trainer Saeed bin Suroor, successful in the race in 2006 with Satchem, has engaged dual Group Three-placed scorer Iguazu Falls along with Listed-placed Fateh Field, while Mark Johnston also has two entries, namely course and distance winner Dubai’s Touch and recent Ripon winner Laa Rayb.

Luca Cumani has entered three-time winner Bankable, while William Haggas’ Mutajarred, Richard Hannon’s recent Listed winner Ordnance Row and the William Knight-trained dual winner King Of Dixie are also among the entries.

Other notable entries include Sylvester Kirk’s course and distance winner Caldra, Brian Meehan’s pair of Diamond Tycoon and Once Upon A Grace, along with Andrew Balding’s Vanderlin.

The seven-race card also includes the valuable Priory Park Stakes Handicap (3.00pm) over a mile and a half, in which Gary Moore has entered 10-year-old veteran Nawamees, who will be bidding for a hat-trick of wins.

The Saeed bin Suroor-trained Spring City catches the eye. Second on his first two starts before getting off the mark next time out last July, the well-bred son of Monsun will be stepping up from a mile and a quarter.

The Henry Candy-trained Candle, a winner over the course and distance last October, has this race as an option, as does the Philip Hobbs-trained Bureaucrat, who hasn’t run on the level since September, 2005 but has been running with success over obstacles.

Also among the 22 entries are Emma Lavelle’s Daltaban, Charlie Egerton’s Duty Free and the Jamie Osborne-trained Tears Of A Clown.

Racing on Saturday gets underway at 2.30pm with the Prince Drive Stakes over six furlongs, which has attracted 19 entries, while the card also includes the Nick Brooks EBF Maiden Stakes (4.05pm) over the same six furlongs.

The day also features the Racing UK Free To Air Today Stakes (4.40pm) over five furlongs, the Michael (Gerry) Germon “Lifetime In Racing” Stakes (5.15pm) over 11 furlongs and finally the Racing UK 4th Birthday Celebration Stakes (5.50pm) over a mile which marks the founding of Racing UK four years ago on May 29.

Friday, May 30, is Carnival Of Flying Day with a number of aviation-related attractions throughout the day. The Carnival of Flying will involve a fly past and air displays before racing starts (around 1.30pm). Other attractions include a parachute display team (around 1.45pm), a glider demonstration and display, aircraft simulator rides, a Spitfire and military helicopter display, helicopter rides and a model aircraft exhibition. Music will be provided by the Royal Naval Band.

Carnival Of Flying Day has also attracted a strong set of entries. The highlight of the day is the Goodwood Vintage Fly In Handicap (4.10pm) over an extended 11 furlongs, which has a massive entry of 41.

Jockey Ryan Moore has been booked for the Sir Michael Stoute-trained maiden City Stable, while Alan King has snapped up Richard Hughes for Black Jacari, third on his seasonal debut on May 16.

At the head of the weights on 9st 4lb, Ed Dunlop is represented by recent maiden winner Stock Market, while Gary Moore has entered Alan Ball Memorial Stakes winner Mcconnell, who receives a 6lb penalty for that Goodwood victory over nine furlongs.

With a field size limit of 17, William Haggas’ well-bred Storyland, a winner of his two starts in May already, Dunlop’s Ever Rigg and Pat Eddery’s dual winner Buddy Holly, may struggle to make the cut.

The mile International Bureau Of Aviation Stakes (3.35pm) has a huge entry of 51 three-year-olds, headed by top-weight Hasty Retreat. Trained by Ed Dunlop, he carries a 6lb penalty for winning at Newcastle on May 23.

The Goodwood Flying School Maiden Fillies’ Stakes (5.15pm) over one-mile has 45 three-year-olds engaged, including Richard Hannon’s Round The Cape, who was second on her debut at Newbury on May 17.

Also guaranteed a place in the line up is the Sir Michael Stoute-trained Tableau Vivant, who carries the colours of Ballymacoll Stud like stablemate and Vodafone Derby hopeful Tartan Bearer.

Other notable entries include Jeremy Noseda’s pair, Grande Annee and Lemon N Sugar, Michael Jarvis’ Persian Sea, the Hughie Morrison-trained Siren Sound and John Gosden’s La Troupe.

Racing for the two-day meeting starts at 2.25pm with the Goodwood Aerodrome Stakes over nine furlongs, while the card also includes the Casco Maiden Auction Stakes (3.00pm) over six furlongs, the Goodwood Aero Club Stakes (4.45pm) over a furlong further and the Goodwood Aircraft Engineering Stakes (5.50pm) over two miles.

GROUND

Seamus Buckley, Goodwood’s Clerk Of The Course, revealed this morning: “The going is officially good to soft at the moment. We had approximately 63 millimetres of rainfall from 8am Saturday until midday on Monday. The going was quite quick so we were ready for the rain and spiked the course in anticipation. The precipitation has got into the ground and the course has taken it well.

“According to the forecast, it should dry out gradually as it gets warmer into Thursday and Friday. If the forecast is right, then I would think we might just be riding on the slower side of good come the weekend.

“In the last race on Friday, we will be using the cambered bend for the first time. That is the section of course, on the outer loop of the two-mile course, that we have worked on through the winter and we successfully trialed it last week with three horses from Amanda Perrett’s yard.

“We will also be using a strip of fresh ground on the last six furlongs of the round course, which has not been used since September.”
