THE VALUE BETTING COLUMN EVERY SATURDAY THE CURRAGH., SATURDAY, MAY 24, 2008 3.45pm 400,000 euros BOYLESPORTS IRISH 2,000 GUINEAS (GROUP ONE) 1m Going - Good to firm for the best odds go to www.BritOdds.com BP= the best price at the time of writing 1. 162-1 Famous Name Dermot Weld 3-9-0 Pat Smullen Slammed his three rivals in the recognised trial for this race, which the trainer has previously taken with English 2,000 Guineas winner Refuse To Bend. However, this big bull of a colt prefers cut in the ground and has been beaten by Jupiter Pluvius and New Approach on his two attempts on faster going. Probably wants further. BP= 10/1 2. 1123-1 Henrythenavigator Aidan ÓBrien 3 9-0 Johnny Murtagh Showed he was one of the best on decent ground under well judged ride to take English 2,000 Guineas, beating New Approach by a nose. Won that race on merit and could well beat the Bolger horse again if ground stays fast. BP= 6/4 3. 11- Jupiter Pluvius Aidan ÓBrien 3 9-0 Jamie Heffernan Two wins from two starts and comfortably accounted for Famous Name in Group Three last time out. Was reportedly trainer’s first choice for the English 2,000 Guineas before being ruled out by a dirty scope. Fitness has to be taken on trust, but could go close for a stable that has a formidable record in the race, especially with second strings. BP= 8/1 4. 1111-2 New Approach Jim Bolger 3 9-0 Kevin Manning Champion European two-year-old last season and considered unlucky by many not to have triumphed at Newmarket earlier in the month. However, he will need to have improved since to beat Henrythenavigator on fast ground. BP= 6/4 5. 24121- Nownownow David Wachman 3 9-0t Olivier Peslier Winner of Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf in October and an interesting runner on Irish debut. That Monmouth Park victory was run in desperate conditions on a tight track however and the rest of his juvenile form looks less than spectacular. BP= 25/1 6. 1- Sammy The Snake Brendan Duke 3 9-0 D J Moran Won the opening Irish two-year-old race of last season but not seen out since. Had serious muscle strain in meantime and trainer admits that the colt is behind schedule and would prefer soft ground. Looks booked for last. BP= 100/1 7. 213-53 Stubbs Art David Elsworth 3 9-0 Seb Sanders Justified trainer’s lofty opinion with exceptional third behind Henrythenavigator and New Approach at Newmarket. Settled well on that occasion but has four and a half lengths to find with the O’Brien runner and will probably have to settle for a place at best. BP= 20/1 8. 8518- Windsor Palace Aidan ÓBrien 3 9-0 Colm O’Donoughue Maiden winner on Polytrack and not disgraced in Group Three contest at Leopardstown on latest start in October, but will almost certainly act as a pacemaker for his stablemates and does not possess the quality to pinch a race like this. BP= 100/1 SUMMARY Jupiter Pluvius was all the rage in the ante-post market for the English 2,000 Guineas prior to his setback and looks value to maintain his unbeaten record.
