VODAFONE DERBY & JUDDMONTE OAKS COUNTDOWN UNDER WAY
* Oxx has high hopes for Katiyra
* Brittain hoping Hattan can uphold family honour in Juddmonte Coronation Cup
Pictures for the Vodafone Derby and Juddmonte Oaks are starting to take shape, with the final trials providing further clues ahead of the two Classics at Epsom.
Twice Over had been at the head of the market for the £1,250,000 Vodafone Derby but he could only finish third behind the Sir Michael Stoute-trained Tartan Bearer and the Aidan O’Brien-trained Frozen Fire in the totesport.com Dante Stakes at York on Thursday, May 15.
Disappointed trainer Henry Cecil immediately cast a doubt over whether Twice Over would run at Epsom. Nevertheless, both the first and second look highly likely to take their chance at Epsom on Saturday, June 7.
Stoute, seeking his fifth Vodafone Derby victory, will also be represented in the line-up by Group Three Addleshaw Goddard Dee Stakes winner Tajaaweed. The colt was held up in that Chester contest and travelled well until getting a spilt up the inside as they straightened up. He seemed to have more in hand than the winning margin of a short-head suggests.
Jockey Richard Hills was suitably impressed and was quick to confirm that he will ride the Hamdan Al Maktoum-owned son of Dynaformer at Epsom. Stoute completed the Dee Stakes/Vodafone Derby double in 2003 with Kris Kin, while Oath in 1999 was another to record that double.
The master of Freemason Lodge may also be represented by Bank of America Chester Vase winner Doctor Fremantle, who may be supplemented by owner Khalid Abdulla at a cost of £75,000.
The O’Brien-trained Henrythenavigator, who lowered the colours of the Jim Bolger-trained New Approach in the Group One stanjamesuk.com 2000 Guineas at Newmarket at the beginning of the month, is also under consideration for the Vodafone Derby.
Under a masterful ride from Ballydoyle’s number one jockey Johnny Murtagh, Henrythenavigator was settled towards the rear of the field before making significant headway to join the market leader with a furlong to race and scored by a nose. The son of Kingmambo would be bidding to become the first horse since Nashwan in 1989 to complete the 2000 Guineas/Derby double.
Since 1983, four horses have followed up success in the Group Three totesport.com Derby Trial at Lingfield Park with victory in the Vodafone Derby. O’Brien’s Alessandro Volta, who made all in last Saturday’s contest to score by three quarters of a length, is also among the Vodafone Derby entries. The son of Montjeu, sire of Vodafone Derby winners Motivator and Authorized, appeared to handle the track well at Lingfield, which bears the most resemblance to Epsom of all the trial venues.
Curtain Call, trained by Luca Cumani and well-supported in the ante-post market, was a non-runner in that Lingfield race owing to the quick ground. His only run this season for new trainer Luca Cumani came in a 10-furlong conditions stakes at Nottingham, a race in which he won readily by six lengths. Curtain Call will now go straight to the Vodafone Derby.
Another who falls under the Ballydoyle banner is maiden Washington Irving, who was runner-up to Dermot Weld’s convincing winner Casual Conquest, who might be supplemented for the Vodafone Derby, in the Group Two Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial at Leopardstown last Sunday. Third in that contest was the Kevin Prendergast-trained Moiqen, who also remains in the Epsom picture.
The John Oxx-trained Katiyra will side-step the Irish 1,000 Guineas in favour of a crack at the Juddmonte Oaks at Epsom Downs on Ladies Day, Friday, June 6. A Leopardstown maiden winner on her only previous start, she ran second in last Sunday’s Group Three Derrinstown Stud 1,000 Guineas Trial at the Dublin track over an inadequate mile. Having broke slowly, she was putting in her best work in the finish and her trainer is confident that she will appreciate the step up in trip.
“Katiyra has come out of Leopardstown okay - she’s been fine all week. She put up a good show, it was a decent race and she was a little bit unfortunate not to be able to make her run a bit earlier - she might have won but that’s neither here nor there. The main thing was that she ran a good race and ran like she wanted further,” explained Oxx.
“We just wanted to find out if she would be a 1,000 Guineas candidate as well as a possible Oaks candidate but, although she’d probably run a real good race in the 1,000 Guineas, we just think that it might be better to wait and stretch her out so the plan is to run her in the Juddmonte Oaks.
“She was a little bit giddy in the stalls at Leopardstown and wasn’t focused on jumping out. She missed the kick slightly which left her in a poor early position for a filly who is a stayer - we would have liked to have her up more with the pace. It may have been because it was her first run of the year and maybe a lack of experience but we’ll address that and she’ll have plenty of stall practice.”
Oxx, who has a good record at Epsom Downs, with both of his Vodafone Derby runners being in the first three with Sinndar winning in 2000, while last year he sent out Four Sins to finish fourth in the Oaks. However, he feels that while Katiyra, who also carries the colours of the Aga Khan, lacks experience, she might have more potential than Four Sins.
The Curragh-based handler continued: “It’s hard to know how she compares to Four Sins because the problem with Katiyra is that she’s had very little experience. She had a setback - she coughed - after her first win and we didn’t get to run her again in the races that we would have like to test her in.
“This year she had a couple of setbacks so she’s had a relatively late start. We would have liked to have given her more experience. We don’t know enough about her yet except that she has potential. We’ve been very happy with her work in the lead up to Leopardstown and very happy with the race. She certainly wouldn’t have the experience of Four Sins going into the Oaks but she is a more scopey filly and might have more potential.”
The Group Three Tattersalls Musidora Stakes at York on Wednesday provided more clues ahead of the Juddmonte Oaks, with the Jim Bolger-trained Lush Lashes racing clear of the field inside the final furlong to score by an impressive five lengths. While the trainer indicated that the filly will most likely stay at home for the Irish counterpart, he has not ruled out a tilt at the English Classic on Friday, June 6, for the daughter of Galileo and she currently heads the ante-post market.
The fast finishing runner-up Cape Amber, from the stable of last year’s Vodafone Derby winning trainer Peter Chapple-Hyam, looks the type who will appreciate the step up to a mile and a half, while a similar comment applies to the fourth-placed Aidan O’Brien-trained Moonstone.
The Rockfel Stakes winner Kitty Matcham, who was ninth on her seasonal debut in the Group One stanjamesuk.com 1000 Guineas, is taking the same route as two of O’Brien’s past Oaks winners, Imagine and Shahtoush, by running in the Irish 1,000 Guineas first.
Like last year’s Oaks heroine Light Shift, the O’Brien-trained Sail landed the Listed Weatherbys Bank Cheshire Oaks on May 7. The daughter of the recently retired Sadler’s Wells quickened up well before staying on to record a half-length victory over Sugar Mint, who is confirmed as an intended runner at Epsom, where she will wear a tongue-strap.
Clive Cox’s Miracle Seeker lost her maiden tag in the Listed totesport 0800 221 221 Oaks Trial Stakes at Lingfield, where she was three quarters of a length too good for fellow Juddmonte Oaks entrant Look Here. The pair, who pulled clear of the field, look likely to take their chances at Epsom next month.
Meanwhile, the Roger Charlton-trained Clowance entered the frame for the Juddmonte Oaks when scoring her second victory at Newbury in the Swettenham Stud Fillies’ Trial Stakes on Friday, May 16. The daughter of Montjeu started favourite and was pushed out by Steve Drowne to win by a comfortable length and three quarters.
Clive Brittain saddled Warrsan for back-to-back victories in the Juddmonte Coronation Cup (2003 & 2004) and this year he is looking to that top-class performer’s near relation Hattan to take the prestigious contest on June 6.
Hattan has been in cracking form this spring, following up a fine victory in the Group Three Winter Derby at Lingfield with a solid half-length second to Ask in the Group Three Gordon Richards Stakes at Sandown Park on April 25.
Brittain believes that Hattan is a different horse this year and is hoping that the six-year-old can head to Epsom with a Group One already in the bag as he sends his stable stalwart to Rome on Sunday for the Premio Presidente Della Repubblica, ahead of a tilt at the Juddmonte Coronation Cup.
The Carlburg Stables handler revealed today: “Hattan goes to Italy on Sunday for a Group One and, depending how he gets on, he will almost certainly go to Epsom for the Coronation Cup.
“He’s in very good form this year. Having his teeth sorted out during the winter has made a tremendous difference and he is 20 kilos heavier this year. He has won and finished a close second this season so we feel that weight increase has been a great benefit to him.”
“I’m confident that Hattan has a very good chance of winning in Italy and it would be lovely to go to Epsom with him to try to follow-up Warrsan’s two successes in the race.”
Other notable entries in the Juddmonte Coronation Cup include Aidan O’Brien’s 2007 Irish Derby winner Soldier Of Fortune, along with stablemates Duke Of Marmalade, Peeping Fawn, Yeats and last year’s runner-up Septimus among others, while also entered from Ireland is Kevin Prendergast’s Mores Wells.
The home team is headed by Sir Michael Stoute’s three-time Group Three winner Ask, who was a narrow runner-up in the Group One Canadian International at Woodbine last year. Mick Channon has entered Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe runner-up Youmzain, who ran fifth in the Group One Dubai Sheema Classic on his only start this year.
French raiders have a strong hand, with Andre Fabre’s Getaway, the hugely-impressive winner of the Group Two Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket on his seasonal debut this month, and Richard Gibson’s Doctor Dino, successful in last year’s Group One Hong Kong Vase, both among the 45 entries. German trainer Jen Hirschberger has two entered, namely Adlerflug and Sommertag, both of whom carry the colours of Gestut Schlenderhan.
