CHESTER MAY FESTIVAL
RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE
THURSDAY, MAY 5, 2005

TODAY’S CROWD UP

The attendance at Chester today, Ladies Day, was 21,726, a four and a half per cent increase on last year’s figure for the second day of the May Festival.

GROUND

The going has been changed after racing to GOOD TO SOFT and clerk of the course Ed Gretton said: “We are forecast one or two millimetres of rain this evening and it will be dry for the rest of the night and tomorrow, when I expect the ground to remain Good to Soft. We will have more fresh ground tomorrow between the six-furlong and one-and-half furlong markers.”

TOTE

Today’s on-course tote cash turnover was £503,021, marginally down on the 2004 figure of £525,895.

DEELIGHT WITH FIELD SIZES

Chester is delighted that this year’s two Derby trials - today’s Group 3 MBNA Europe Bank Chester Vase and tomorrow’s Group 3 Dee Stakes (Sponsored by Aberdeen Murray Johnstone And Halliwells LLP), as well as tomorrow’s Group 3 Blue Square Ormonde Stakes have attracted good fields.

The MBNA Europe Bank Chester Vase sees eight go to post, while the Dee Stakes (Sponsored by Aberdeen Murray Johnstone And Halliwells LLP) has nine runners and the Blue Square Ormonde Stakes has attracted eight.

Commenting on the field sizes and the fact that Chester asked connections to support their races, particularly the two Derby trials, Richard Thomas, Chester’s Chief Executive, said: “It’s fantastic - obviously we set out to get good fields and it looks like we have been rewarded with both quality and quantity with nine in the Dee Stakes, and eight in the Ormonde Stakes which is brilliant too.

“So we are really happy and it’s a good, balanced three-day card. I am very happy with the way connections have responded to asking them to support our Derby trials - we are here to put on racing for trainers and owners. They have shown us that they do want two Derby trials obviously.”

Ed Gretton, Chester’s Clerk of the Course, said: “Obviously, these are fantastic fields and we hope that the momentum will continue next year with these races and hope that they continue to serve a purpose.”

DEE DAY FOR KING

Aidan O’Brien’s highly-regarded three-year-old Gypsy King is one of nine runners declared for tomorrow’s Group 3 Dee Stakes, sponsored by Aberdeen Murray Johnstone and Hallwells LLP.

The Sadler’s Wells colt won on his only start in a Leopardstown on October 31 and has been the subject of positive reports from Ballydoyle through the winter. He - along with Excusez Moi, Forward Move, Jack The Giant and Mordor - is one of five Dee Stakes declarations entered in the Vodafone Derby.

Excusez Moi, who cost $410,000 as a yearling, is owned by Sheikh Mohammed’s son Hamdan and trained by Clive Brittain. The Fusaichi Pegasus colt scored at Yarmouth on April 4 before finishing seventh behind Indesatchel in the Greenham Stakes at Newbury.

The Queen’s home-bred Forward Move, trained by Richard Hannon, was only beaten around a length when sixth in a close finish to the Craven Stakes at Newmarket last month while Jack The Giant - whose trainer Barry Hills has won the Dee Stakes no less than 11 times before - will need to improve considerably on his two juvenile runs to figure.

Sir Michael Stoute sent out Kris Kin to win the Dee Stakes en route to victory in the Vodafone Derby two years ago and he has two runners tomorrow. Mordor, owned by the Niarchos family, made a winning racecourse debut in a division of the Wood Ditton Maiden at Newmarket’s Craven Meeting, while Zalongo was beaten a head into second in a handicap at the same fixture.

The David Flood-trained Im Spartacus, who spent the early part of this year in Dubai, will be having his 15th start tomorrow while Thunderwing, trained by Karl Burke, heads to Chester having finished second in a Newbury conditions event on his seasonal debut last month.

The field is completed by the Brian Meehan-trained Zohar, who finished sixth in the Listed Feilden Stakes at Newmarket’s Craven Meeting on his seasonal debut.

THE DEE STAKES SPONSORED BY ABERDEEN MURRAY JOHNSTONE AND HALLIWELLS

The Group Three £65,000 Dee Stakes sponsored by Aberdeen Murray Johnstone and Halliwells, run over 10 furlongs and 75 yards, is held tomorrow Friday, May 6, the final day of Chester’s historic May Festival, and provides an ideal opportunity for unexposed colts to show their true potential. The new sponsors this year are Aberdeen Murray Johnstone Private Equity, the private equity division of Aberdeen Asset Managers Limited, and Halliwells, one of the UK’s leading commercial law firms with offices in Manchester, London, Liverpool and Sheffield.

The 2003 renewal was won by Kris Kin, who captured the Derby the following month from 19 rivals at Epsom Downs. Trained by Sir Michael Stoute, he was the second Dee Stakes winner in the last six years to go on to victory in the world’s premier classic. The 1980 winner Playboy Jubilee might not have been anything out of the ordinary but the horse he beat at Chester, Prince Bee, collected victories in the Gordon Stakes at Goodwood, Great Voltigeur Stakes at York and the Prix Niel at Longchamp in France. Kirtling, the 1981 Dee Stakes victor, was unfortunate to be around in the same year as Chester Vase winner Shergar but still won the Group One Premio d’Italia in Milan. He also finished fourth to Shergar in the Irish Derby.

The Barry Hills-trained Infantry, the 1985 Dee Stakes winner, was fourth behind Law Society in the Irish Derby while Faraway Dancer, triumphant at Chester in 1986, went on to take fourth place to Shahrastani in the Derby. Sir Harry Lewis, triumphant in 1987, also came fourth in the Derby for Barry Hills before improving further still to win the Irish Derby at the Curragh. Barry Hills trained the 1989 Dee Stakes winner Free Sweater and the Chester specialist was also triumphant the following year. The 1990 Dee Stakes proved a classic pointer with the winner Blue Stag only finding Chester Vase second Quest for Fame too good in the Derby, while the runner-up, Saumarez, won the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe later in the season.

Geoff Wragg, another trainer with an excellent record at Chester, sent out Beneficial to success in 1993 with the Barry Hills-trained Blues Traveller four lengths back in second. Beneficial did not contest any of the classics but triumphed in the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot and has gone on to be a useful jumping stallion. Blues Traveller ran in the Derby, belying his 150/1 odds to finish a fine third to Commander In Chief. Geoff Wragg enjoyed further success in the 1995 Dee Stakes when Pentire defeated Sanoosea by a length and a quarter. Like Beneficial, Pentire did not run in a classic, but went on to take the King Edward VII Stakes, Great Voltigeur Stakes and Irish Champion Stakes that season, as well as finishing second to Lammtarra in the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes at Ascot - a race he would win as a four-year-old in 1996. Henry Cecil, successful with Ivano in 1982 and Cicerao in 1994, was represented by the promising colt Oath in 1999, who produced a dazzling display at Chester to defeat Little Rock by five lengths. He then headed to Epsom and won the Derby in stylish fashion.Dr Greenfield just got the better of Grandera by half a length in 2001. Grandera was subsequently purchased by Godolphin, for whom he landed Group One races like the Singapore Airlines International Cup, Ascot’s Prince Of Wales’s Stakes and the Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown. Last year Peter Chapple-Hyam’s African Dream landed the odds by three-quarters of a length from Putra Sas, although the winning distance did not really reflect his superiority in a tactical affair.

Barry Hills

Barry Hills, trainer of Jack The Giant, has won the Dee Stakes an amazing 11 times, sending out 20 runners since 1984 - 30 in all - he loves Chester and had the third Mutawassel representing him last year.

THE BLUE SQUARE ORMONDE STAKES

Blue Square sponsors the £75,000 Group Three Blue Square Ormonde Stakes for the first time at Chester tomorrow Friday, May 6, the third and final day of the North-west racecourse’s famous May Festival. The interactive bookmaker has signed a four-year deal to support this historic extended one mile, five furlong event - Blue Square also backs a mini-festival at the Roodee in August. Blue Square has been rewarded by an excellent field of eight, with Day Flight, unbeaten this season, taking on the Aidan O’Brien-trained Acropolis, Highclere Thoroughbred Racing’s Distinction, the Geoff Wragg-trained Lochbuie, last year’s MBNA Europe Bank Chester Vase winner Red Lancer, the Michael Bell-trained Shabernak, Three Counties and Margery Daw.

The 1990 running of the Ormonde Stakes, which is run over an extended 13 furlongs, went to the Alec Stewart-trained Braashee, who ran on well in the final furlong under Michael ‘Mouse’ Roberts to deny Michelozzo by three lengths. A week later the Sadler’s Wells colt followed up in the Yorkshire Cup at York and he ended a fine campaign with victory at the highest level in the Prix Royal-Oak at Longchamp at the end of October. The following season Per Quod was a length too powerful for Warm Feeling for trainer Ben Hanbury. He had scored in a Group Two event at Capannelle the previous season.

Saddlers’ Hall justified odds-on favouritism in 1992 in fine fashion, coming home 10 lengths ahead of Arcadian Heights without the recently-retired Pat Eddery having to work too hard for his fee.The following month Michael Stoute’s charge gained the biggest success of his career when winning the Vodafone Coronation Cup at Epsom by three quarters of a length from Rock Hopper. The Clive Brittain-trained Shambo became a dual winner of this heat in 1993 and 1994, when running in the colours of the handler’s wife Maureen, who also bred the Lafontaine horse. His first success at the Roodee provided Roberts with his second victory in the nineties, when crossing the line a length ahead of Allegan. The margin was slimmer in 1994, when Shambo got the better of a fine tussle with Shrewd Idea by a short head.

Stoute had his second success of the 1990s when Zilzal Zamaan denied Shambo a third success by one and a quarter lengths in 1995. The following season Oscar Schindler became the most recent Irish-trained victor when prevailing for Kevin Prendergast by one and a half lengths from Election Day under Mick Kinane. Just over a month later he won the Group Two Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot before becoming a classic winner in the Irish St Leger at the Curragh - he went on to score in this latter contest the following year as well.

Peter Chapple-Hyam, who last season returned to train in Britain having worked in Hong Kong, saddled Royal Court to success in 1997 for locally-born owner Robert Sangster, a great supporter of Chester, who died last year.

The following season Venetia Williams, better known for her expertise with jumpers, gained a surprise victory with her first Flat runner here when Stretarez scored at odds of 25/1 by a neck from Palio Sky. He had previously won a number of Listed and Group events when trained in France.

Pat Eddery scored on the John Dunlop-trained Sadian in 1999, leading near the finish to beat Secret Saver by a neck in another thrilling climax while Sir Michael Stoute was on the scoresheet again in 2000 when Daliapour benefitted from the strength of Kieren Fallon to hold Life Is Life by three-quarters of a length. The four-year-old subsequently won two top-class events that term - the Vodafone Coronation Cup and the Hong Kong Vase at Sha Tin in December. Since Daliapour’s victory, this event has been dominated by Geoff Wragg and veteran owner John Pearce, who have taken three of the last four runnings courtesy of St Expedit in 2001 and 2002 and Asian Heights the following season, all ridden by Darryll Holland.

The first year that St Expedit struck, he made all and was soon clear to beat Pairumani Star by 10 lengths. The following year he again made every yard of the running but did not have things nearly so easy, being driven out to take the plaudits by a length from Sagittarius. In 2003 Asian Heights gained his first victory since disappointing in the previous season’s Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp, holding on by a length and a quarter from Compton Bolter at Chester.

Wragg’s The Whistling Teal almost made it four on the trot for the veteran trainer in 2004 but he was unable to cope near the finish with the Mark Johnston-trained Systematic, who was a length and three-quarters ahead where it matters, with 12 lengths back to third Compton Bolter.

FIRST RACE QUOTES
JARDINE LLOYD THOMPSON HUXLEY STAKES (GROUP 3)

MARAAHEL WINS OPENER
The well-backed Maraahel (100/30 favourite) landed the opening Group 3 Jardine Lloyd Thompson Huxley Stakes by a length from Solskjaer to begin a busy day for trainer Sir Michael Stoute on the right note.

Stoute had not yet made it to Chester, having been caught in traffic, and owner Hamdan Al Maktoum’s racing manager Angus Gold said: “He won over a mile and a half last year and then ran a great race in the St Leger when he just didn’t get home.

“We took him to Dubai where I thought he ran a hell of race but didn’t quite stay and then, after his last run at Newbury, Willie Supple suggested we bring him back to this distance and he’s run a great race today.

“I wouldn’t rule out running him over a mile and a half in the future but not on easy ground, we’ll see what races there are for him.”

Winning jockey Richard Hills added: “He’s got really good speed and was cruising in the Leger last year but just couldn’t find anything because of his stamina. He is a really nice horse and it has been the right thing to bring him back in trip.

”My wife Jaci has been riding him, so credit goes to her. I am really pleased that this horse is back on the right track now.”

Aidan O’Brien, trainer of runner-up Solskjaer, said: “I’m delighted with him and he was coming back at the end - he’s a really tough, hardy horse.”

Going after the first
John Egan said the ground was “very tacky”. Neil Callan also described the going as tacky.

Eddie Ahern stated that the ground ”has dried up overnight but is still on the soft side. It’s very loose on top and cutting up”.

Jimmy Fortune also said the ground was “cutting up”, while Frankie Dettori said that it was “good ground, it’s dried up a lot overnight”.

Seb Sanders also said the going was now good while George Baker said the ground was “on the soft side of good”.

Race Two - Stanleybet Handicap Quotes

NOTABILITY HITS LAYERS

Historically second in the Esher Cup represents good form and Notability, who occupied that spot last time out, did not let the Sandown form down, justifying 2/1 favouritism in the Stanleybet Handicap after a mighty plunge by punters this morning.

The Sheikh Mohammed-owned three-year-old won by a length and a quarter from the arguably unlucky-in-running Mostashaar.

Winning trainer Michael Jarvis said: “They were going plenty quick enough and, while he jumped quickly, if Philip [Robinson, jockey] thinks they’re going too quick, he accepts it.

“This horse is progressing and we will see what the handicapper does to him. He could be a possibility for the Britannia Handicap at Royal Ascot at York - he’s that type and this year it will be around the bend.”

Robinson said: “They set off really quick for a furlong and then eased up a bit. When that happens, you always get traffic problems.

“I think he just need the race at Sandown.”

Angus Gold, racing manager to owner Handan Al Maktoum whose Mostashaar did not get the clearest of runs, said: “That is Chester for you and Richard [Hills, jockey] just said suddenly a gap appeared and then it went just like that.”

THIRD RACE QUOTES
MBNA EUROPE BANK CHESTER VASE (GROUP 3)

HATTAN HAS BRITTAIN DREAMING OF EPSOM

Trainer Clive Brittain was dreaming of winning a first Vodafone Derby after the rapidly-improving Hattan held off Almighty by half a length to win the Group 3 MBNA Europe Bank Chester Vase.

But bookmakers Cashmans dismissed the winner’s chance of Epsom glory with a 100/1 quote for the classic.

“The Derby is one of the few races I have never won and I’d like to win 10 before I retire so I’d better get a move on. They’ll be calling me Aidan Brittain,” joked the trainer. “But (owner) Saeed Manana will speak to Sheikh Mohammed, who is a very good friend of his, and then discuss whether he goes to Epsom. He could go for the Italian Derby, we’ll just see how he comes on from this.

“I think he’s a very useful three-year-old but he’s going to be one hell of a four-year-old. He was a bit like a grounded rat on his first two starts and then showed a little last time. He’s still learning and when he really gets going he’ll find another gear.

“This is the family of Warrsan, Luso, Cloud Castle and Needle Gun and you don’t bully them and in return they’ll give you 110 per cent if you respect them.

“He kept pulling his rugs to bit and was costing me more in rugs than I was getting in training fees so I left him without a rug on through the winter, he was known as the naked chef!”

Runner-up Almighty is another who could head to Epsom and trainer Aidan O’Brien reported: “He ran a lovely race. It was a big step up from his first run and we’re getting there, he has to be on the Derby shortlist now.”

Brian Meehan, who saddled third-placed First Row, said: “I was very pleased with that and he has a big future as there is a lot of improvement to come. He’s still in the Derby and we’ll keep that as an option. He’s a big baby and that was only his fourth run.”

THIRD RACE - MBNA EUROPE BANK CHESTER VASE
MORE WINNING QUOTES

SEB SANDERS WINS HIS FIRST MBNA EUROPE BANK CHESTER VASE

Seb Sanders, the winning jockey on Hattan, said: “To be fair to this horse, if he had jumped out of the stalls at Sandown (last time out when third in the classic trial) then he would have given the winner there something to think about.

“As you saw today, he still hasn’t quite got the knack of coming out of those gates but he is getting quicker.

“Today was the first time that I was able to give him a proper ride. He likes to get a fair bit of room.

“Three and a half furlongs out, I just let Kieren (Fallon on Almighty) know that I was there and going well so he would get moving and it did the trick. Kieren soon got on with it when he knew I was there and I was not forced too wide which was good.

“Let’s hope he is a Derby horse - he doesn’t know he is a racehorse yet.”

THIRD RACE - MBNA EUROPE BANK CHESTER VASE
EVEN MORE WINNING QUOTES

CLIVE BRITTAIN’S EXCELLENT MBNA EUROPE BANK CHESTER VASE RECORD

Clive Britain enhanced his excellent MBNA Chester Vase record with Hattan today.

His last three runners in the classic trial have now won.

Clive Brittain
2005 - HATTAN
2003-1 DUTCH GOLD
1995-1 LUSO
1994-5 Sieve Of Time
1991-2 Luchiroverte
1989-2 Golden Pheasant
1986-2 Sirk

The Newmarket trainer added: “They often talk about trainers schooling horses in public but this horse schooled me in public.

“He was working well at home and on his first run was the original cigar horse (ie sat in the stalls when they opened). On his second run, he got very shut in at Newmarket which is hard to do but we managed it! Then at Sandown, he got knocked all over the course.

“My horses are never told that they are maidens - I am so pleased for this horse because he is a tough little devil. He refuses to wear a rug and that is why his coat does not have a glossy shine.

“He has never given a cough or had a dirty lung and is first out in the morning.

“I will talk to Saeed Manana (the owner) about the Derby (holds an entry for the Epsom Downs classic). Hattan is also in the Italian Derby, with the idea of following Luso. We will just have to see how the other colts come on.”

The stewards noted that the second Almighty had interfered with Hallhoo inside the final furlong but were satisfied that no riding offence happened and took no action.

FOURTH RACE QUOTES - BANK OF SCOTLAND HANDICAP

FAIRY STORY FOR TURNER

“This is a fairy story and compares to all those tales that you hear about the Grand National,” said Bill Turner after his Westbrook Blue had won the Bank Of Scotland Handicap by two lengths from Bold Marc.

“This horse was badly injured at Chester last year at the next meeting after the May Meeting - they thought about putting him down.

“The injury cut through a tendon and if you look at his hock, you’ve never seen anything like it. They took him to Liverpool University, where they said after a fortnight that, while he was a great patient, they should probably put him down.

“I thought, well he’s been at Liverpool for a couple of weeks so we should keep trying and he came back to us after five months.

“He is such a kind, genuine animal and I always have my horses gelded but I thought to myself, after what he’s been through, I can’t do that and he could get himself a small, stallion job.

“He has trotted up and I couldn’t have him out of the frame today, especially after his win at Thirsk where the ground was plenty soft enough.

“Even though Colin [Haddon, jockey] works for me, it was lucky the boy had a good horse under him as he managed to get him very unbalanced and he still picked up to win.”

FIFTH RACE QUOTES
BOODLES DIAMOND MAIDEN STAKES

MOUNTAIN IMPRESSES

Mountain High earned quotes of 33/1 from most bookmakers for the Vodafone Derby after breaking his duck by an effortless five lengths in the Boodles Diamond Maiden Stakes.

The winner - a half-brother to Islington - is trained for Sue Magnier and Michael Tabor by Sir Michael Stoute, whose travelling head lad Jimmy Scott said: “For me he is one of the nicest looking horses I have ever been involved with. All he wants to do is eat and he has the most lovely temperament.

“He is really well balanced and did it very well today - he will have learned a lot from that.”

SIXTH RACE QUOTES - STRATSTONE ASTON MARTIN HANDICAP

BRIANNSTA DEFIES HIGH DRAW

Briannsta overcame a stall 12 draw to win the concluding Stratstone Aston Martin Handicap by four lengths from bottom weight Peters Delite.

Paul Deegan, assistant to winning trainer Mick Channon, said: “He was away quick, got across and tucked in nicely. They were going too fast and he picked up well.

“He’s a good horse but I think the winning horse’s distance was a bit exaggerated - the runner-up is still a maiden.

“It was too heavy last time at Ripon but he ran well at Kempton before that and picked up well there and was only just caught. We couldn’t believe it when he did get caught.

“I am delighted by that and he is a good, tough, genuine horse, but he’s nothing out of the ordinary and we’ll hope that the handicapper is not too hard.”

GOING AND WEATHER

Ed Gretton, Chester’s Clerk of the Course, reported on Thursday morning the current going as: “Good To Soft, Good In Places.”

“The ground has dried out a little,” he continued. “Chester has been dry but we may get some light showers this evening, possibly one or two millimetres of rain. Tomorrow is forecast to be dry.”

Yesterday the going was Good To Soft.

RAIL MOVEMENT

Gretton reports that: “We have moved the rail out three metres from the four-furlong marker to the one and a half furlong point.

“Tomorrow we will be moving the rail out a further four metres from the six-furlong marker all the way around to the start of the home straight, leaving about a six metre drop-in at the one and a half furlong point.”

BETTING MOVES

Victor Chandler reports support for Notability in the Stanleybet Handicap (2.00pm). Michael Jarvis’s three-year-old is 11/4 (from 7/2).

The Gibraltar-based firm has also seen money for Maraahel in the opening Jardine Lloyd Thompson Huxley Stakes (for the Tradesman’s Cup) (1.30pm). He has been trimmed to 4/1 (from 9/2).

Punters have also wanted Notability with William Hill, who go 11/4 (from 4/1).

FURTHER BETTING MOVES

Totesport also reports money for Notability in the Stanleybet Handicap (2.00pm). He is 5/2 (from 100/30).

They have also seen support for Maraahel in the opening Jardine Lloyd Thompson Huxley Stakes (for the Tradesman’s Cup) (1.30pm). He has been cut to 11/4 (from 4/1).

Irish bookmaker Cashmans has trimmed Beckermet to 2/1 (from 9/4) in the Bank Of Scotland Handicap (3.00pm). He is 2/1 (from 9/4).

Throw The Dice and Emerald Lodge have both been backed in the Stratstone Aston Martin Handicap (4.10pm). They are 4/1 (from 9/2).
