CHESTER MAY FESTIVAL
RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE
WEDNESDAY, MAY 4, 2005

CROWD UP

Today’s attendance was 19,005, up 5.5 per cent on the same day 12 months ago.

GROUND

The ground remains GOOD TO SOFT and clerk of the course Ed Gretton reported: “The times have been quite slow and we’ll leave the going as Good To Soft.

“There will be fresh ground from the four-furlong to the one-and-a-half furlong pole, opening up the running rail.

“We are forecast for a dry day tomorrow with a couple of showers towards the evening.”

SANDERS SUSPENDED

Seb Sanders was suspended for a day on Wednesday, May 18, having been found guilty of using his whip with excessive frequency aboard runner-up Come On Jonny in the penultimate race.

MBNA EUROPE BANK CHESTER VASE PREVIEW

Trainer Aidan O’Brien and jockey Kieren Fallon, who teamed up to win both Guineas races at the weekend, bid to continue the purple patch in tomorrow’s Group 3 MBNA Europe Bank Chester Vase with Almighty, one of eight declared runners.

The Sadler’s Wells colt, a half-brother to 1998 Arc winner Sagamix, finished fourth of five at Leopardstown when favourite on his seasonal debut on April 10 but the Ballydoyle team has since hit top form so improvement can be expected from this Vodafone Derby entry.

First Row, a 220,000 yearling purchase, broke his duck when winning a Leicester maiden by nine lengths on April 7 and this Vodafone Derby entry will be a first MBNA Europe Bank Chester Vase runner for trainer Brian Meehan.

The Mick Channon-trained Hallhoo - who is not entered in the Vodafone Derby - is bidding for a second classic trial victory having landed the Weatherbys Blue Riband Trial at Epsom last month.

There has never been a impressive winner of this event than Shergar, who scored by 12 lengths at Chester before going on to be one of the greatest ever Derby winners in 1981.

His owner the Aga Khan and trainer Sir Michael Stoute are represented this year by the blue-blooded Kalamkar, a Daylami half-brother to Breeders’ Cup Turf winner Kalanisi, who can be expected to improve for his debut fifth in the 10-furlong Museum Maiden Stakes at Newmarket on April 12. Kalamkar is another Vodafone Derby entry.

Newmarket handler Clive Brittain, successful with Dutch Gold in 2003 and Luso eight years earlier, runs another Epsom entry, Hattan, who belied his 50/1 starting price to finish a good third to Fracas in the Betfred Classic Trial at Sandown last month.

The Mark Johnston-trained Hearthstead Wings, who finished third in last season’s Group 1 Gran Criterium at San Siro, was a neck behind Hattan at Sandown and is another with a Vodafone Derby entry.

The Gran Criterium seventh Shannon Springs, trained by Barry Hills, has already advertised his wellbeing this season with a success in a 12-furlong maiden at Newmarket’s Craven Meeting while Marcus Tregoning has his first MBNA Europe Chester Vase runner with Night Hour, who won a Salisbury maiden in September. Shannon Springs and Night Hour are the only two runners not in the Vodafone Derby.

OOH AAH CAMARA TAKES OPENER

Ooh Aah Camara beat odds-on favourite Strike Up The Band by a short-head in a pulsating finish to leave trainer Vicky Haigh, a former model who still rides as an amateur, in ecstatic mood.

She said: “I haven’t planned a speech because I didn’t think that we would win. It’s 11 years since the last race that I won on Channel 4.

“This filly is very, very tough and she has lots of breaks at home but she just thrives on her racing.

“I did know that she had won - she looked like she might have lost the race but then she battled on and she is so tough.

“John Egan gave her an absolutely fantastic ride and pushed her and she responded. At Thirsk on Saturday she didn’t lay up but flew today when John asked her.

“I have 11 two-year-olds - after I had a baby, I kind of got fed up sitting at home and decided to go out and get some new owners.

“She’ll definitely go for the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot but God knows if she’ll run before that, she only ran last weekend. I bought her as a yearling so that proves that I am a good judge!”

Bill Turner, trainer of third-placed Dusty City, a further five lengths adrift, said: “I’m pleased enough with that - the winner has obviously improved a fair bit and Dandy’s horse looks decent.

“I’ll look through the form and see how it works out before deciding where to go but we shouldn’t have any trouble winning again.”

THE WINNING JOCKEY
John Egan, the winning jockey on Ooh Aah Camara who was drawn one, said: “I wasn’t 100 per cent sure I had won - the second was very unlucky, being checked.

“My filly has done it well, putting her head down where it mattered - you deserve luck like that.

“It was very tight during the race - you just have to sit and suffer and hope it happens - if it doesn’t you have been unlucky. The ground is on the slow side of good.”

GOING AFTER THE FIRST

John Egan, rider of the winner, reported the going as on the “slow side of good”.

Adrian Nicholls on the second said that the track was soft, while Alan Daly thought the ground was also on the soft side.

Chris Catlin thought the ground was on the soft side of good and John Carroll thought the ground was riding dead.

Jamie Spencer said that the going was “softish” and Robert Winston said that it was “just on the easy side of good”.

SECOND RACE QUOTES
WEATHERBYS BANK CHESHIRE OAKS (FOR THE ROBERT SANGSTER MEMORIAL CUP

ALUMNI LANDS EMOTIONAL WIN FOR HILLS

Trainer Barry Hills was delighted to win the first running of the Listed Weatherbys Bank Cheshire Oaks named in memory of his great friend Robert Sangster after Alumni scored by three-quarters of a length from Higher Love.

“There isn’t a day that goes by when I don’t think of Robert so it’s a special race to win,” said Hills, winning the race for the seventh time.

“Alumni travelled well all the way and was ridden positively. She ran very well at Newbury first time out behind what I think was a very decent filly and the family have done well here - she’s a half-sister to a Dee Stakes (Prolix) and Chester Cup (Bangalore) winner.

“I wouldn’t have thought this would be an Oaks filly, we’d look at something like the Ribblesdale and Lancashire Oaks then maybe the Park Hill or St Leger later on.”

Hills and owner Khalid Abdulla also have another smart three-year-old filly in Fashionable, winner of the Pretty Polly Stakes at Newmarket on Sunday, and the trainer added: “Fashionable has eaten up and come out fine from the race. Both fillies did very little last year and I have to say I have a soft spot for Fashionable, she’s very good and didn’t get the run of the race at Newmarket, she’s better than that form.

“Everyone keeps asking whether the fillies will be supplemented for the Oaks but as someone just said, you might as well supplement for the Derby as it looks a weak race, they are only talking horses in there at the moment.”

Runner-up Higher Love could have classics on her agenda and trainer Michael Bell: “She ran as we expected and is a progressive filly and conditions were in her favour. She’s in the Italian Oaks and at Epsom and Frankie (Dettori)said that if she had turned the last bend better she might have won.”

Dettori added: “She’s very game and tough and stays well. She didn’t handle the last half furlong very well and that might have cost her a length.”

Bell also saddled Tincture to pick up black-type when finishing third for owner-breeders the Duke of Roxburghe and John and Carolyn Warren. “She’s stepped up a lot on her ninth in a maiden last time and my brief was to get third and we got it,” said Bell.”

RICHARD HUGHES PLEASED

The winning jockey Richard Hughes said: “Alumni pulled a bit out for me at the end which was great.

“She would not like the going in the future to be too firm.

“She was watching the cameraman on the inner all the way round, twitching her ears, and I knew she had a gear left if I wanted it.

“I felt Frankie (Dettori on second Higher Love) breathing down my neck - he has been coming and getting me in the last few days but thankfully I held on - this filly has a very big heart and is very honest.”

ANAK PEKAN COMPLETES BACK-TO-BACK totesport CHESTER CUP VICTORIES

Anak Pekan completed a second successive victory in the £120,000 totesport Chester Cup, beating Swift Sailor by a length with Contact Dancer a further length and a quarter away in third. He started at 16/1 as against 2/1 favourite last year.

Winning trainer Michael Jarvis said: “I thought that he had a lot to do with the extra weight and his draw. His initial speed allowed him to take up a position, which is important in this sort of race, and it was a repeat of last year really.

“I thought that he had a lot on his plate and a month ago I didn’t think that he was the same horse as last year, not ready to run and backward,, although in the last 10 days he has blossomed.

“These heritage handicaps have a maximum weight so why can’t he come back for a third go next year?

“We tried him in Listed and Group races last year but there is a bit of difference in those and he is a top-class staying handicapper.

“A spring campaign might be the best thing for him because he might be better in the first half of the year. The Northumberland Plate would be a possibility.”

Mark Johnston, who saddled Swift Sailor and Contact Dancer, said: “The winner was going well but Kevin [Darley, rider of Swift Sailor] said the horse on the outside was intimidating him but he kept trying to come back.

“It was a great effort from an inexperienced horse and I don’t think that it is any secret that he went to the July Sale in Newmarket last year. Then he failed his wind test so he came back to us and it has worked out well.

“Contact Dancer has run a great race and he had to come a bit wide which might have cost him a bit and then he had to come again.”

RACE THREE -totesport CHESTER CUP
MORE WINNING QUOTES

ANAK PEKAN AGAIN

The Michael Jarvis-trained Anak Pekan, successful last year by five lengths from Misternando when the 2/1 favourite, is the ninth horse to have been victorious twice in the totesport Chester Cup (no horse has won three times).

He joins Leamington (1857 and 1859), Dalby (1865 and the following year), Pageant (1877 and the following season), Dare Devil (1892 and 1893), Chivalrous (1922 and the following year), Sea Pigeon (1977 and the following season), Top Cees (1995 and 1997) and, most recently, Rainbow High (1999 and 2001).

Philip Robinson, the winning rider both times, said: “Even though Anak Pekan is a staying horse, he has bags of speed and we got a good position.

“That helped him and it was a very good performance off this weight.”

FALLON DISAPPOINTED WITH BIG-RACE PACE

Kieren Fallon, fifth on 7/2 favourite Coconut Beach in today’s feature race, the totesport Chester Cup, felt the lack of pace for much of the race was against his mount.

He told Racing UK: “I was disappointed in the pace of the race - there were two or three horses who would usually go on but when Dettori (Frankie on top-weight Romany Prince) got to the lead he just pulled up - cantering around.

“That did not suit any of us bar the winner. Coconut Beach stays well - he has proven that - maybe if I had ridden a more positive race, it might have been a different ball game.

“But I couldn’t get out and had to go with the flow. I was trying to hold my position as we cantered around. There will be another day.”

FOURTH RACE QUOTES
BREITLING WATCHES & WALTONS OF CHESTER HANDICAP

TIGER ROARS FOR POULTON

Sussex-based Jamie Poulton landed his first Chester success when Tiger Tiger won the Breitling Watches & Waltons of Chester Handicap comfortably under John Egan, who was completing a 129/1 double.

“We didn’t have a great time in Dubai with him, he came back a bit jarred up,” said Poulton.

“This ground suits him and he’ll go to Epsom now for a heritage handicap that closed this morning (the Vodafone Rose Bowl over 10 furlongs on June 3). It’s great to have my first Chester winner.”

Michael Jarvis, trainer of runner-up Divine Gift, said: “We were just trying him a bit further and held him up today. He ran a good race and we’ll probably keep him to a mile and two furlongs.”

Roger Charlton, who saddled third-placed Blue Monday, said: “He looked like he was going to be last at one stage so I’m delighted to see him come through to be third. A mile and a quarter is good for him and he doesn’t want the ground too firm.”

Walker Smith Way Handicap Quotes

QUIZZENE PREVAILS AGAIN

Quizzene justified favouritism in the Walker Smith Way Handicap by one and a quarter lengths from Come On Jonny.

Winning trainer Mark Johnston said: “We’ll stick to handicaps with him for the moment and it’s one step at a time.

“He does run as if he will get a mile and six furlongs and he is a typical stayer. He won over a mile and two furlongs as a two-year-old and we took a bit of a liberty running over a mile and two furlongs last time when 2lb wasn’t worth giving away.

“We are very pleased with him as he is making steady progress. Kevin opted to take the safe route and keep some daylight in front of him.

“Time and time again our horses come back at the end of races and I’m not sure if it’s because they’re tough or whether they’re just maintaining their effort and plugging on. I need to study the relative times and positions of horses during a race to find out the answer.

“He won’t go for the Derby for which he has an entry. Some owners like to have big targets in the future. My policy usually is to take it one step at a time so I am not jumping from here to the Ebor in one fell swoop. We will creep our way up with him.”

Winning rider Kevin Darley added: “I thought that I would leave him out there where he was happy. When we went for it, he hesitated for a moment.”

Cheshire Regiment EBF Maiden Stakes Quotes

RIVER KINTYRE ENJOYS THE ROODEE

“What was there to beat him?” asked Barry Hills after his River Kintyre had won the concluding Cheshire Regiment EBF Maiden Stakes by three and a half lengths from outsider Scooby Dude. “He was the one with the form.

“Bryan McMahon fancied his but he was drawn 14. This horse travels well and, although he’s had a few problems with his shins, he will improve a lot and will get six furlongs.

“He’ll have one more run and then it will be Royal Ascot. It could be the Coventry Stakes. Michael [Hills, winning rider and the trainer’s son] said that he gave him a good feel and when he was beaten at Doncaster, the three that had beaten him had all had a run.”

Hills junior told his father: “He is a nice horse and he kept going on the wrong leg but he did it very well.”

Hills snr was completing a 5.3/1 double, initiated by Alumni earlier in the afternoon.

Bryan McMahon, father of trainer Ed McMahon, who saddled Silver Crest to finish third, a further neck away, said to Hills snr: “I wanted to win this race as my father was in the Cheshires [Cheshire Regiment].

“There’s a great big bowl for winning this race and that would have looked good on my table filled up with apples!”

GOING AND WEATHER

Ed Gretton, Chester’s Clerk of the Course, reports the current going as: “Good To Soft.”

“Chester has had around 18 millimetres of rain in the past week, although it was a dry night last night and it is forecast to remain dry until late on Thursday afternoon when some light showers could arrive (1-2mm). Friday is forecast to be dry,” he added.

RAIL MOVEMENT

Gretton reports that: “Today the inside rail is set out on the original line.

“Tomorrow we will be moving the rail out three metres from the four-furlong marker to the one and a half furlong point.

“On Friday we will be moving the rail out a further four metres from the six-furlong marker all the way around to the start of the home straight, leaving about a six metre drop-in at the one and a half furlong point.”

STABLE LADS ENJOY LUXURY

This year for the first time ever at Chester’s May Festival, all stable lads staying overnight are being put up in the Holiday Inn Hotel next to the racecourse.

Richard Thomas, Chester’s Chief Executive, said: “Last season some stable staff stayed in our new Holiday Inn but this is the first time that everyone staying overnight has been facilitated.

“It is a great hotel and for the stable staff, compared to some of the accommodation that they stay in, it is sheer luxury. They appreciate it and this is how they should be treated.”

WORK ON NEW STABLES BEGINS THIS WEEK

Development on completely new state-of-the-art stables begins this week at Chester.

Thomas commented: “The new stables will be a lot closer to the course and the hotel and hopefully they will be in operation for Chester’s May Festival next year.

“They will have a canteen, showers for those stable staff not staying overnight and a housing development. There will be around 110 stables.”

BETTING MOVES

totesport has seen money for Larkwing in their feature totesport Chester Cup (2.30pm). Geoff Wragg’s four-year-old is 7/1 (from 11/1).

In the Walker Smith Way Handicap (3.35pm), the same firm reports support for Sunset Strip, who is 16/1 (from 25/1).

Victor Chandler has also seen a major market move for Larkwing 7/1 (from 10/1). In the same event Dr Sharp is now 7/1 (from 8/1).

David Stevens of Coral also reports a very lively market for the totesport Chester Cup with Larkwing again attracting attention - he is 13/2 from 9/1 with the Barking-based firm. They have also trimmed both Coconut Beach and Swift Sailor to 5/1 (from 11/2). Stevens said: “We don’t want a repeat of Anak Pekan landing a major gamble in this race last year. Hopefully, the front three in the betting will get beaten.”

Coral has also had cash for Strike Up The Band in the opening Joseph Heler Lily Agnes Conditions Stakes (1.30pm). The juvenile is evens (from 5/4).
