The Disciplinary Panel of the Jockey Club, on 1st June 2005, will consider an appeal lodged by Johnny Murtagh, the rider of MISS BRUSH, against the decision of the Lingfield stewards to find him in breach of careless riding and to suspend him for three days following the running of the Lingfield Leisure Club Median Auction Maiden Stakes on 24th May 2005.
The Panel for tomorrow's appeal will be: Lord Rathcreedan (Chairman), Nick Nutting and John Wallinger.
UPCOMING YORKSHIRE RACE MEETINGS
FRIDAY ACTION AT THIRSK
Thirsk is in action on Friday (June 3), when the seven-race programme is scheduled to start at 1-55 p.m. with a contest for maiden two-year-old fillies supported by The European Breeders Fund.
The afternoon's feature race is The Anthony Fawcett Memorial Handicap Stakes over one mile and a half for three-year-olds. Mr. Fawcett was a well-known North Yorkshire businessman and racehorse owner. His son, Tony, has himself enjoyed success as an owner (in particular with Cardinal Venture, the winner of eight races) and is the managing director of local company, Hygicare Ltd., regular sponsors at Thirsk , including the leading jockey of the season award at the course.
The Carleton Furniture Group of Pontefract return to Thirsk to sponsor a race for maiden three-year-olds over seven furlongs, while apprentice riders are in the spotlight in the afternoon's final race, The Levy Board Apprentice Handicap Stakes - a sprint contest over five furlongs.
The Bob Jones Ragtime Band provide the musical entertainment.
‘IRISH NIGHT' AT PONTEFRACT FEATURES VALUABLE LISTED RACE
The Weatherbys Bank Pipalong Stakes, a Listed race for fillies and mares, takes pride of place at Pontefract on Monday evening (June 6) – ‘Irish Night' at the course, with a first race time of 6-45 p.m.
With a total prize fund of £35,000, the third running of the Pipalong Stakes is sponsored for the second year by the Wellingborough-based Weatherbys Group Ltd. which provides administrative and commercial services to the British racing industry.
Pipalong was one of the best northern-trained fillies of recent years. Trained near Malton by Tim Easterby, Pipalong won the Group 1 Sprint at Haydock Park and was just beaten half a length after a terrific tussle with Wannabe Grand in the ‘Listed' Flying Fillies' Stakes at Pontefract in August 1999.
The Tony Bethell Memorial Handicap Stakes is a race for stayers over two miles and one furlong which commemorates a former chairman of Pontefract Racecourse. This is the third of eight races in The Pontefract Stayers Championship, a competition involving races of over two miles at the course this season offering bonuses of £3,000 and based on a points system. Last year's inaugural series winner, Vicars Destiny leads the way again after the opening couple of rounds, having secured twelve points, followed by Solomon's Mine on nine points.
The giant totesport Screen situated opposite the main stands, will assist racegoers to follow all of the action; the Hookey Band will play Irish music, while there's an ‘ Irish Pub' in the Paddock Enclosure. In fact, all the bars have an Irish theme, with a half pint of Guinness for the first 100
racegoers passing through the Paddock turnstiles. The ‘Irish Night' racecard has a competition for racegoers to win Family tickets to the ‘totesport Day' Sunday Meeting at Pontefract on June 19, which features a new Listed race, The totesport.com Pontefract Castle Stakes.
REDCAR QUALIFIER FEATURES ON TUESDAY
Redcar's programme on Tuesday (June 7), which begins at 2-30 p.m., features a qualifying race in a brand new handicap series at the seaside course this season The Carlsberg Redcar Straight-Mile Championship, which culminates in a £30,000 Final on Saturday, October 1. The total prize money on offer throughout the series amounts to £130,000.
Tuesday's race carries prize money of £20,000 and is open to three-year-olds and upwards.
Also featured on the card is The Anderson Barrowcliff Handicap Stakes contested over seven furlongs. The race is supported by one of Teesside's largest firms of chartered accountants and business advisors. Based at Thornaby, Anderson Barrowcliff are the racecourse's accountants and have sponsored at Redcar since 1981.
ELTHERINGTON GROUP RETURN TO BEVERLEY
The Eltherington Group Handicap Stakes is the principal race at Beverley on Wednesday (June 8), a meeting which is scheduled to begin at 2-20 p.m.
Based in Hull, The Eltherington Group, specialists in aluminium fabrications, are celebrating 45 years in business, and they return to sponsor at Beverley after an absence of five years, supporting a contest over one mile and a quarter.
The titles of a couple of other handicap races on Wednesday refer to the next meeting at Beverley, Thursday evening, June 16 – ‘Blue Diamond Night'. This evening fixture coincides with the Royal Ascot at York Meeting and every racegoer that evening has a chance of winning a blue diamond, valued in excess of £1,000 given by Guest & Philips Jewellers of Beverley.
‘DERBY DAY' SATURDAY ACTION AT DONCASTER
‘Derby Day' on Town Moor this Saturday (June 4) will feature all the action ‘live' from Epsom on the pair of giant screens situated opposite the track and also on the CCTV's in the enclosures. The big race, The Vodafone Derby takes place at 4-20 p.m. and there's an extended interval of 45 minutes between the fourth and fifth races at Doncaster to enable racegoers to concentrate fully on the Derby, for which Motivator is the clear favourite after his scintillating victories in The Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster last October and The totesport Dante Stakes at York last month. If Motivator succeeds in the ‘Blue Riband' of racing, he will emulate the achievements of High Chaparral and Reference Point, who both completed the Epsom-Doncaster double, winning the 2002 and 1987 Derbys respectively, after succeeding the previous year at Doncaster as juveniles in The Racing Post Trophy.
Racing at Doncaster begins at 2-20 p.m. with The Carling C2 Handicap Stakes over one mile and a half, followed by the feature race of the afternoon, The Carling Extra Cold Conditions Stakes (extended one mile and a quarter). Both races are supported by Coors Brewers, while fillies and mares are catered for in The Skybet Press Red To Bet On C4 Handicap Stakes, over the sprint distance of six furlongs.
Doncaster-based Rascal Management Ltd., who organise VIP events and hospitality for clients throughout the world, return to their local course to support a contest over seven furlongs, while The Derek Guy ‘Lifetime In Racing' Maiden Auction Stakes for two-year-olds in named in honour of Rossington resident, Derek Guy, who, although now retired, spent most of his working life in racing, having started around 1970. He worked for Newmarket trainer, Henry Cecil for some twelve years, then latterly with Ed Dunlop. The highlight of his career was leading up the 25/1 winner of the 1973 Derby, Morston, for owner/trainer, Arthur Budgett. This is one of a series of races organised by the charity Racing Welfare in recognition of stable staff who have devoted a lifetime to the sport.
The colour racecard will be interleaved, showing the runners at Epsom; musical entertainment is provided by the Tom Roberts Jazz Band, while prior to racing, the Doncaster Youth Jazz Orchestra will perform in the Parade Ring, and a Steel Band will play on the Members' Lawn.
Attractions for young racegoers in the Family Enclosure include a ‘Travelling Paddock' from the Horseracing Museum at Newmarket with rides, games and the chance to wear jockeys' silks! There's also a ‘Rodeo Bull', Cresta Run, Bungee Run, a bouncy castle and entertainers in the enclosure, along with a supervised crèche facility @ £1-80 per hour.
‘LADIES DAY' AT RIPON
Ripon's annual ‘Ladies Day' meeting takes place on Thursday (June 9), followed by ‘totesport Day' at Yorkshire's ‘Garden Racecourse' two days later on Saturday (June 11).
Thursday's seven-race programme begins at 2-10 p.m. and during the afternoon there will be competitions to find the ‘Best Dressed Lady' and the wearer of the ‘Best Hat', as the meeting is a prelude to the following week's Royal Ascot at York spectacular. The best dressed lady will receive a VIP day out to a future Ripon meeting, there's a magnum of champagne and a bouquet of flowers for the lady deemed to be wearing the best hat.
The glamour and fashion off the track will be matched by competitive action on it, including, appropriately, the Ladies' Derby – a handicap contest for lady amateur riders- sponsored for the 19th year by Beaumont Robinson Insurance Ltd. of Bradford.
Oil and fuel distributors, Total Butler Ltd. also return to Ripon to support a handicap race for three-year-olds over one mile and half and in the process draw attention and raise funds for The Yorkshire Air Ambulance, while the Harrogate-based Adler & Allan – specialists in oil and environmental services – sponsor a race for maidens over one mile and a quarter for the second year.
The most valuable race of the afternoon, the £14,000-added Ladies' Day Handicap Stakes is contested over one mile by three-year-olds, while the opening race, The Go Racing In Yorkshire Maiden Stakes for two-year-olds over six furlongs, is supported by The European Breeders Fund.
Ripon's permanent giant screen will enable racegoers to follow the action even more closely, as well as showing the action from the other meetings.
