WINNING QUOTES RACE ONE
GOODWOOD AERO CLUB EBF MAIDEN FILLIES’ STAKES

OSBORNE’S JUDGEMENT SPOT ON

BBC television showed a programme about Jamie Osborne on Wednesday in which the trainer talked about his two-year-olds and was asked to name one to follow.

It came down to a choice between Crocodile Bay, who had already won twice and was second later on the day, and the then unraced filly Marriage Value, who was her trainer’s selection and who vindicated his opinion with a clear cut debut success in the Goodwood Aero Club EBF Maiden Fillies’ Stakes.

“This was not a surprise, but a certainly a pleasant result,” said Osborne’s assistant Adrian Lee. “She is a nice filly, but a bit delicate. She has been going well, but while we expected her to run well, we did not necessarily expect her to win.

“This certainly gives another nice boost to the form of our two-year-olds, who have all been going well., and it is just a shame that her owner John Livock, is too busy to come here today.

“I don’t know about plans for the filly, but I am sure that Jamie and Mr Livock will be talking about things for her.”

RACE ONE GOODWOOD AERO CLUB EBF MAIDEN FILLIES’ STAKES

GROUND

After the opening Goodwood Aero Club EBF Maiden Fillies’ Stakes, the following jockeys reported the ground as:

Johnny Murtagh, rider of Tara Too, said: “Good to soft.”

Ryan Moore, rider of It’s Twilight Time, said: “Soft.”

Richard Hughes, rider of Rubber, said: “Slow side of good.”

Paul Doe, rider of Tour D’Amour, said: “Good ground.”

John Egan, rider of High Heel Sneakers, said: “Slow side.”

Martin Dwyer, rider of Amorada, said:“Soft.”

Tom Queally, rider of Skezahra, said: “Slow side of good.”

Paul Fitzsimons, rider of Bathwick Alice, said: “Soft side of good.”

RACE TWO - AVTRADE HANDICAP

RARE WINNER AT GOODWOOD FOR CYZER

“We’ll meet again in another eight years,” laughed winning trainer Charles Cyzer after his 25/1 chance Establishment won the two-mile Avtrade Handicap by a head from Theatre in a thrilling finish.

“I think the last winner I had at Goodwood was when Establishment’s dam Unchartered Waters won a maiden sponsored by Guy Harwood eight years ago (it was definitely in 1997) but I’m not sure,” he explained.

“People say that this horse has been out of sorts but he’s been running on the all-weather, which he hates, and over shorter trips and I think he’s better over this sort of distance.

“This is probably his perfect ground as he needs to get his toe in. It slows the others up a bit as well.

“He might go up about 8lb for this which could allow him to run in a slightly better race - I doubt if he’ll go for one of the handicaps at Royal Ascot at York.

“He plods on and wins one race now and then which pays for his keep.”

Establishment gave jockey Fran Ferris his first Goodwood winner.

WINNING QUOTES RACE THREE
CASCO CONDITIONS STAKES

BALDING OFF THE COLD LIST

It was with a great sense of relief that Ian Balding welcomed back Vanderlin and Martin Dwyer to the number one spot after the six-year-old had just got the better of Akimbo in a very open five runner race for the Casco Conditions Stakes, in which they bet 3-1 the field with Akimbo and Auditorium just holding that call.

His son Andrew, to whom Balding senior is now assistant, had had 25 runners since his previous success, and though his father’s worry that the trainer would be “suicidal” if there had not been one soon may have been a touch exaggerated, there is no doubt that the result lifted the Kingsclere spirits.

“He is a lovely old horse and races like this are ideal for him. I expect that he will be kept to races like this and maybe the Diomed at Epsom, in which he ran behind (stablemate and winner) Passing Glance last year, could be a race for him.”

RACE THREE - CASCO CONDITIONS STAKES
PLACED QUOTES

AKIMBO JUST BEATEN ON RETURN

Henry Cecil’s Akimbo appeared on the track for the first time in 398 days and just found Vanderlin half a length too powerful.

David Lanagan, Cecil’s assistant trainer, said: “He’s been off an awful long time and he may have liked the ground a little bit faster. Hopefully, he’ll come on for this. We have had an awful lot of seconds and they’ve been improving for having a race.

“He’s in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot at York but that will be up to the boss, Prince Khalid and Teddy Grimthorpe [Prince Khalid’s racing manager].

“We’ll see how he comes out of this race and there is not a lot of time for another race before York. Saying that he is not a heavy horse and it wouldn’t be impossible for him to have another run before then.

“Camacho runs at Haydock tomorrow and he has been training well - he cracked a knee last year which was pinned and missed the end of the season.

“He has done well between two and three and will appreciate a bit of juice in the ground. I’d like to think that he is a nice horse for the season. We can only do so much with them at home so we’ll see how he runs and then come up with a plan.

“Denounce works tomorrow and he has done very well between three and four. He is a big gross horse and during his foundation work he got a quarter crack in mid March which put us back and he put a lot of weight on.

“He’s had four pieces of work now and has come on for each piece of work. Again I would like to think that he’ll be a nice horse for the season.”

FERRIS SUSPENDED FOR ONE DAY

Fran Ferris, rider of the winner Establishment in the second race of the day, the Avtrade Handicap, has been suspended for one day (May 31) for careless riding regarding interference caused to Hathlen.

RYAN MOORE MISSES RIDES

Ryan Moore was ill after riding in the first two races and will miss the rest of his mounts at Goodwood today. Dane O’Neill substituted on Cape Royal in the SBJ Handicap.

BELLE ROUGE

Belle Rouge sadly collapsed and died of a heart attack after the Avtrade Handicap.

RACE FOUR - SBJ HANDICAP
WIN QUOTES

WHISTLER WINS

“When it rained, thank God I left Whistler in this race,” laughed Milton Bradley after the eight-year-old had come late to win the SBJ Handicap by a neck from The Lord in another tremendous finish.

“I thought that Cape Royal [eighth] was the one for this race before the rain. Whistler would not want it bottomless - he goes on good to firm to good to soft ground and probably just on soft. Cape Royal wants a bit better ground.

“Whistler ran well at York after getting the hood left on him a bit there.

“Richard Hills got on well with him last year after Paul [Fitzsimons, winning jockey] broke a leg. You have got to have patience with this horse and he got it dead right today and deserves all the success that he gets.”

PLACED QUOTES RACE FOUR
SBJ GROUP HANDICAP

TURNER FUMING

Delighted though he was by the good effort from his 5-1 shot The Lord, who was beaten just a neck by the fast-finishing Whistler, Bill Turner was far from happy about the way in which things panned out.

“I wish his owners had let me put up my apprentice (Colin Haddon), who claims 5lb as I am sure that the horse would have won with 5lb less to carry,” the trainer fumed.

“I asked them to let him ride, but they were adamant that they wanted Alan (Daly) and that was that.

“Alan is a good jockey and did nothing wrong, but he is not 5lb ahead of Colin, especially on this horse who only knows how to jump and run.

“What is the point of having good apprentices in the yard if you are not allowed to use them ?” Turner went on after The Lord, had raced up with the pace from the start until putting his head in front inside the final furlong only for the winner to pounce in the shadow of the post.

WINNING & PLACED QUOTES RACE FIVE
INTERNATIONAL BUREAU OF AVIATION HANDICAP

PUBLIC FORUM ROMPS HOME

Public Forum, ridden by Richard Hughes for his retaining owner Prince Khalid Adullah, ran clean away with the International Bureau of Aviation Handicap, beating Alessano by three and a half lengths -- a margin very flattering to the runner-up.

“The ground has come right for him after the rain,” said Gary Weir, who was charge of matters in the absence of Prince Khalid’s racing manager Teddy Grimthorpe and of the winner’s trainer Sir Michael Stoute.

Public Forum went round the unsaddling enclosure with the fillet string of his sheet still on his quarters rather than under his tail, but there was a very good reason for that.

“He can be very free with his hind legs,” said Weir as he looked back through his days in racing.

“I am too old to get caught like that nowadays, but I was kicked a time or two when I was younger.”

Weir has been with Sir Michael for nine years after previous lengthy spells with Dick Hern and Barry Hills, where he started a racing career which yielded one winner -- over hurdles in Belgium.

Gary Moore, trainer of runner-up Alessano, said: “he bumped into one too good. He didn’t get going quick enough and took a bit of time to warm up -- he does that.”

Sixth Race - Billy Fiske Maiden Fillies’ Stakes
Win Quotes

ROYAL ASCOT AT YORK FOR TWYLA THARP

Twyla Tharp, who won the Billy Fiske Maiden Fillies’ Stakes by five lengths from Lady Diktat, is on course for an outing at Royal Ascot at York now.

Winning trainer John Gosden said: “She had good form at Doncaster last year and she was due to run at Newbury but had a slight hiccup.

“This would be the minimum trip for her and we’ll now step up and have a go at the Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot at York. She won like a filly who deserves to have a go at that type of race.

“She goes on good to firm but she wouldn’t want it like a road.”

WINNING & PLACED QUOTES RACE SEVEN
ISS FACILITY SERVICES APPRENTICE HANDICAP

HARRIS’ FIRST GOODWOOD STRIKE

Ron Harris, who began training only this year, has got off to a flying start and had his first winner at Goodwood when Golden Dixie landed the closing ISS Facility Services Apprentice Handicap.

Harris was so keen on annexing the prize that he had four runners in the race and also sent out runner-up Attorney, who was his major hope.

He explained having four runners by saying that it was a case of running when he had the chance to do so and the horses are not ballotted out.

“These are the sort of races in which they run and even today two of the four had to run from out of the handicap,” he said.

Harris has also had a soft spot for this particular contest since he won it as an owner with Indian Bazaar (one of his four starters today), trained by Milton Bradley, four years ago and was second two years ago.

“When we first ran Attorney this year I said to my wife who owns him that he was the one for this race, but even though we have won with the ‘wrong one’ I am delighted to have won.

“And I am particularly pleased for the winner’s owner, Vicki Davies, who is my lawyer. She had never had a horse until I started training, but said that she would support me and this is her first winner.”

Milton Bradley, trainer of third-placed favourite One Way Ticket, said: “It was too soft for him. He wants firm or good to firm ground and it was good to firm when we declared him. On the ground it was as much as we could expect.”

GOING NEWS AT 10 AM

Following more than 14 millimetres of rain in the last 24 hours the going for the final day of Goodwood’s May meeting is now

GOOD TO SOFT.

This is in marked contrast to yesterday when, before the rain arrived, raceday clerk of the course Seamus Buckley was concerned that he would have to issue a going report of ‘good to firm, firm in places’.

“We had six millimetres of rain yesterday morning and 14 millimetres up to 6am today,” reported clerk of the course and managing director Rod Fabricius. “At that stage the ground was ‘good, good to soft in places’, but there has been more rain since then and we are now ‘good to soft’ all over.

“The forecast is that this weather front will move away to the East later this morning and conditions should start to brighten up. The weather will get better through the afternoon when it is forecast to be quite breezy which should help to blow away the mist.”

BETTING NEWS

The rain may have caused a number of withdrawals from today’s programme, but it has not deterred punters from taking a view about what may happen and no horse has come in for stronger support this morning than Turtle Soup in the Avtrade Handicap (2.45).

The nine-year-old has not run on the flat for 1,110 days but he has seen plenty of action over hurdles and has clearly given encouragement that he will find today’s two miler just what he wants.

Hills report that he has been backed from 14-1 to half that price, Stan James have cut him from 10-1 to 8-1, Skybet have reduced his odds from 11-1 to 15-2 and with totesport he is now at that price from the morning 10-1.

In the closing ISS Facility Services Apprentice Handicap (5.30), never the easiest of races to assess, Stan James report money for Free Wheelin, who has come in to 12-1 from 16-1, and Golden Dixie, who has been cut from 14-1 to 10-1.

RACING UK CELEBRATES FIRST YEAR

Racing UK, which started transmitting on May 29, 2004, is about to complete its first year of broadcasting.

Rod Fabricius, managing director of Goodwood Racecourse and one of the driving forces behind the founding of Racing UK, commented today: “Racing UK is going from strength to strength and we could not have hoped for a better first 12 months.

“We are producing the best satellite coverage of racing. The racecourses are fundamental. The owners and trainers have been very supportive and the jockeys are 100 per cent behind us so it is the industry channel.”

Andrew Coppel, chief executive of Racecourse Holdings Trust whose 13 racecourses are involved in Racing UK, declared: “Racing UK is a racing channel owned by the racecourses involved - so it is racing for racing.

“Where we are now compared to where we thought we would be is about nine months ahead in terms of subscriptions. The funding is more than adequate so we are really pleased with the success.

“We feel that we have built a platform now in terms of the number of subscribers and financial stability. There are opportunities now to grow the business - terrific opportunities in terms of broadband and mobiles - 3G stuff.

“I think we can work very closely with the bookmakers and make sure that Racing UK is right in the forefront of the opportunities that are there.”

Fabricius added: “Racing UK is serving racing very well but it is also going to serve racecourses extremely well.

“Racecourses are multi-faceted businesses - here at Goodwood, we have golf, an airfield, a hotel and a historic house and I really want to get that message across to the viewing audience.”

Coppel said: “Racecourses are terrific venues, with great car parking and great food and beverage. The average racecourse has 25 to 30 racing days, maybe even less, which means there some 330 days of the year where we can attract customers into our racecourses, whether it is for a conference, banqueting or other functions.”

NEW FIXTURE NEXT WEEKEND AT GOODWOOD

Goodwood breaks new ground next Saturday, May 28, when staging a seven-race card transferred from Kempton Park.

The card will be shown on Channel 4, who will also be broadcasting The Morning Line from Goodwood that day, and includes two Listed races, the Empire Property Group Stakes (registered as the Achilles Stakes), and the Empire Property Group Cup (registered as the Heron Stakes).

The Empire Property Group will be sponsoring the card which also includes the Stubbs At The National Gallery Conditions Stakes, a race that coincides with the loan of one of Goodwood House’s four Stubbs paintings to the National Gallery’s exhibition from June until September.

Goodwood’s popular Friday evenings get underway on June 3, an organic food and farming night featuring products from the Goodwood Estate’s Home Farm.

Friday, June 10, is a Courses For Horses night in aid of the Brooke Hospital, while the following week is the Mid-Summer Black Tie Picnic (see separate release).

There has been huge interest in Glorious Goodwood, this year taking place from July 26 to 30, with bookings currently 100 per cent up on the same time 12 months ago.

POIGNANT END TO GOODWOOD’S THREE-DAY MEETING
GLENN MILLER ORCHESTRA TO MAKE FIRST APPEARANCE AT A RACECOURSE

The last day of Goodwood’s May Meeting today (Friday, May 20) continues the mood set by the recent national VE celebrations, when the Glenn Miller Orchestra will play as the curtain closes on the traditional three-day event.

Inspired by the original Glenn Miller Orchestra, so influential across America and Europe during the early 1940s, this will be the first time that they have played at a racecourse. Past venues have included Blenheim Palace, Edinburgh Castle, The Kremlin, Palace of Versailles and last summer, Arundel Castle.

The VE anniversary theme will be supported by Second World War footage, which will be played on the big screen in the Richmond Enclosure throughout the afternoon, courtesy of the History Channel.

The Duke of Richmond will be hosting a special lunch and his guests include Lady Bader, whose late husband, Sir Douglas Bader, was known as a ‘Fighter Ace’ during the war and flew his final sortie from Goodwood. He took part in the Battle of Britain, despite having lost both his legs in an accident prior to war breaking out.

After colliding with a German plane over France, he was captured by the Nazis and imprisoned at Colditz until the end of the war in 1945. He was given the huge honour of leading a 300-plane victory flypast over London after the war. Bader was given a permanent memorial at Goodwood in 2001, when a bronze was unveiled by Lady Bader and the Duke of Richmond at the Goodwood Airfield.

The Duke’s other guests include Lord Beaverbook, whose grandfather was Minister of Aircraft Production during the war. His father, the Honourable Max Aitken, was in charge of the famous 601 squadron, based at Tangmere on the Goodwood Estate. The Duke of Richmond will also be playing host to Mr David Johnson, the American Charge D’Affaires.

All three guests will be presenting the trophies for the penultimate race, the Billy Fiske Maiden Fillies Stakes. Billy Fiske was the first American to be killed in combat in the Second World War when his plane crashed on takeoff at Tangmere Airfield in 1940. He is buried at Boxgrove Priory on the Goodwood Estate.

Goodwood Racecourse Managing Director Rod Fabricius said: “We are delighted to be welcoming such distinguished guests to Goodwood today. The world-renowned Glenn Miller Orchestra will end the week in the sort of style for which Goodwood is famous.”

History of the Goodwood May Meeting

Goodwood may have been at the forefront of British racing for more than two centuries, but it is hard to believe that 40 years ago the entire racing calendar at the Sussex course comprised of just four days of the Glorious Goodwood July Festival.

A two-day fixture was introduced in August, 1965, which has since evolved around the Celebration Mile which was first staged two years later. The May meeting itself was started in 1968, and the Predominate Stakes was first run in 1970.

The Letheby & Christopher Predominate Stakes is the feature of the three-day May Meeting and is named after the three-time winner of the Goodwood Stakes (1958-1960) who also won the 1961 Goodwood Cup.

The chief supporting race is the Normandie Stud Lupe Stakes, founded in 1972, which is a trial for the Oaks. Lupe herself won the Classic back in 1970 and was unbeaten in all her starts in Britain over three seasons, though she never ran at Goodwood.

The inaugural running of the Predominate was won by Her Majesty The Queen's Charlton - named after the footballer Bobby Charlton - a useful stayer who also won the 1971 Henry II Stakes. He was trained by Major Dick Hern, who won the race on another five occasions, including in 1979 with Troy who remains the only Derby winner to have won the Predominate en route to Epsom classic glory.

However, the race has also produced some top-class performers down the years. Minster Son, Hern's final winner of the race in 1988, also took Goodwood’s Gordon Stakes prior to winning the St Leger in the autumn. The 2003 Predominate winner High Accolade followed a similar route, and subsequently finished runner-up in both the Gordon Stakes and the St Leger.

But the best horse to have won the Predominate in recent years must surely be Dubai Millennium. The apple of the eye of Sheikh Mohammed, this superb racehorse used the Predominate Stakes as a springboard to the 1999 Derby. Despite staying the 1m 2f trip - the Predominate has been run over 1m 3f since 2000 - the colt did not stay the extra two furlongs at Epsom. But a drop in trip was what he needed, as he went on to take a string of Group One races over the next 13 months, including the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, a devastating win in the 2000 Dubai World Cup and the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes.

Pentire was another talented winner of the Predominate Stakes (1995). Geoff Wragg's charge missed the Derby, but won the 'Ascot Derby' instead when taking the Edward VII Stakes at the Royal Meeting. Pentire was also victorious in the Irish Champion Stakes in 1995, and won the following summer's King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes at Ascot.

Wednesday’s renewal was won by Unfurled, trained near Arundel by John Dunlop, who is a director of Goodwood Racecourse. Unfurled beat the Aidan O’Brien-trained Indigo Cat by a head, with Godolphin’s Belenus two lengths away in third, and is an intended runner in the Derby.

The Lupe Stakes generated an Oaks winner just five years ago, when Henry Cecil's Love Divine was successful in the race, while trainer David Elsworth is hopeful that this year’s winner, Something Exciting, can emulate the feat The first running of the Goodwood Listed race was won by the 9-1 shot Star Ship, who was trained by Ryan Price.

The 1982 winner, Height Of Fashion was owned by Her Majesty The Queen. The filly had previously been successful in the Fillies' Mile at Ascot, and went on to land the Princess of Wales Stakes’ at Newmarket before becoming a great broodmare.

Height Of Fashion was ridden by Willie Carson who was easily the most successful jockey in the race, having partnered six winners - including four in a row between 1992 and 1995, all for local trainer, John Dunlop. Based locally near Arundel, Dunlop won the Lupe five times during the 1990s.

ANOTHER FIRST FOR GOODWOOD - FIRST RACECOURSE TO GO ORGANIC

Organic meat from the Goodwood Estate’s newly-converted organic Home Farm will be available on all racedays at Goodwood Racecourse this year.

Goodwood believes it is the first of the UK’s 59 racecourses to offer organically-reared meat on its menu.

One year on from achieving full organic status, the Goodwood farm is supplying Goodwood Racecourse and its on-site catering specialists, Payne and Gunter, with freshly prepared organic beef.

Throughout the season, various beef dishes will be served in two of the course’s restaurants, the Charlton Hunt and Horsewalk Carvery Restaurants, both of which are situated in the Members’ Richmond Enclosure.

Covering 2,800 acres on this 12,000-acre Estate - host to the world renowned annual Festival of Speed and Goodwood Revival motor sport events - the farm includes beef, sheep, pigs, dairy and cereal crops.

It is the largest organic lowland farm in the UK and the only organic farm in Europe feeding all its livestock 100% with organic feed produced on the farm, ie nothing extra gets brought in to feed the animals.

The farm recently scooped first prize in the Southern Region in a nationally-run competition to find “Britain’’s Most Beautiful Farm 2004".

Rod Fabricius, Managing Director and Clerk of the Course at Goodwood, commented: “With a reputation for firsts - we were the first racecourse to have BBC Radio commentary in 1947, the first to use a public address system in 1952 and the first to stage so called “Enterprise Fixtures”, we are delighted to have yet another one.

“This follows hot on the heels of us winning the 2004 Neil Wyatt Best Kept UK Flat Racecourse Award for the third time in six years (1999, 2003 & 2004).”

Michael Thomas, Payne and Gunter’s General Manager at Goodwood Racecourse, commented “Head Chef, Leon Smith, and his team of chefs are delighted to add Goodwood’’s new organic beef to their race-day offering for 2005. This will extend the choices available on our exciting menu selection and we are hoping to introduce more Goodwood organic products in due course.”

Goodwood’s organic meat will also be available at this year’s Festival of Speed (24-26 June) and Goodwood Revival (16-18 September).

BLACK TIE PICNIC

If you can’t make Royal Ascot at York on Friday, June 17, then why not enjoy an evening at Goodwood Racecourse for the Midsummer Black Tie Picnic.

Set against the backdrop of the rolling Sussex Downs, this unique event promises to be a memorable evening that epitomises all that is glorious about horseracing and entertaining at Goodwood.

The evening will begin on the Richmond Lawn, exclusively reserved for this event, where a Veuve Clicquot champagne reception will provide an idyllic start. Tables of four can be reserved on either the Lawn itself or the Double Trigger Rooftop, and a luxurious Goodwood hamper has been exclusively designed for the event.

Tickets can be booked on 01243 755022, as they can for the Goodwood Ball, a popular feature of the ‘Glorious’ meeting and held this year on Thursday, July 28.

First staged in the 1940s, the Raceweek Ball in Goodwood House is testament to why the five days of racing in July are seen not only as a sporting extravaganza but also a highlight of the English summer season.

The scene of lavish parties and elaborate entertainment for over 200 years, Goodwood House provides a unique social focus during the Festival meeting and this year’s Raceweek Ball promises to be a memorable occasion again.
