GOODWOOD MAY MEETING
RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE
WEDNESDAY, MAY 18, 2005
NO WATERING
Seamus Buckley, clerk of the course, stressed that Goodwood will be not be watering the course tonight.
He said: “In view of the forecast of rain tonight and through tomorrow, with possible further showers on Friday, it would be foolhardy to turn on the taps again.
“The times have averaged three second slower than standard, which is indicative of the ground, which is riding good to firm.”
BOATING COMES TO GOODWOOD FOR THE THIRD TIME
The second day of Goodwood’s three-day May Meeting tomorrow (Thursday, May 19), celebrates Goodwood’s links with the marine industry, as ‘Boating Comes to Goodwood’ for the third time.
This year, for the first time, both a leading trainer and leading jockey award have been introduced for the day. The Opal Marine Leading Trainer Award will be presented to the trainer who has accumulated the most points over the first six races. The presentation will take place in the Parade Ring before the seventh race, where the winning trainer will receive a silver salver and case of champagne.
The Royal Denship/Peters Super Yachts Leading Jockey Award will follow the same format and the jockey with the most points after the sixth race will receive a silver salver and case of champagne.
The themed race day, which has gone from strength to strength over the years, is the brainchild of Brian Peters, Chairman of London Boat Shows and the locally-based Peters Plc. The day features seven separate marine sponsors and a total prize fund of £98,000.
There will be a six-berth Fairline Targa 40 on display at the Racecourse, weighing in at 7½ tonnes and worth over £250,000.
POIGNANT END TO GOODWOOD’S THREE-DAY MEETING
GLENN MILLER ORCHESTRA TO MAKE FIRST APPEARANCE AT A RACECOURSE
The last day of Goodwood’s May Meeting on Friday, May 20, will continue the mood set by the recent national VE celebrations, when the Glenn Miller Orchestra will play as the curtain closes on the traditional three-day event.
Inspired by the original Glenn Miller Orchestra, so influential across America and Europe during the early 1940s, this will be the first time that they have played at a racecourse. Past venues have included Blenheim Palace, Edinburgh Castle, The Kremlin, Palace of Versailles and last summer, Arundel Castle.
The presence of the Glenn Miller Orchestra is the main non-racing feature of the three-day May Meeting and the VE anniversary theme will be supported by Second World War footage, which will be played on the big screen in the Richmond Enclosure throughout the afternoon, courtesy of the History Channel.
The Duke of Richmond will be hosting a special lunch and his guests include Lady Bader, whose late husband, Sir Douglas Bader, was known as a ‘Fighter Ace’ during the war and flew his final sortie from Goodwood. He took part in the Battle of Britain, despite having lost both his legs in an accident prior to war breaking out.
After colliding with a German plane over France, he was captured by the Nazis and imprisoned at Colditz until the end of the war in 1945. He was given the huge honour of leading a three-hundred plane victory flypast over London after the war. Bader was given a permanent memorial at Goodwood in 2001, when a bronze was unveiled by Lady Bader and the Duke of Richmond at the Goodwood Airfield.
The Duke’s other guests include Lord Beaverbook, whose grandfather was Minister of Aircraft Production during the war. His father, the Honourable Max Aitken, was in charge of the famous 601 squadron, based at Tangmere on the Goodwood Estate. The Duke of Richmond will also be playing host to Mr David Johnson, the American Charge D’Affaires.
All three guests will be presenting the trophies for the penultimate race, the Billy Fiske Maiden Fillies Stakes. Billy Fiske was the first American to be killed in combat in the Second World War when his plane crashed on takeoff at Tangmere Airfield in 1940. He is buried at Boxgrove Priory on the Goodwood Estate.
Goodwood Racecourse Managing Director Rod Fabricius said: “We are delighted to be welcoming such distinguished guests to Goodwood on Friday, during a week which will feature high-class horseracing and special events. The world-renowned Glenn Miller Orchestra will no doubt end the week in the sort of style for which Goodwood is famous.”
BLACK TIE PICNIC
If you can’t make Royal Ascot at York on Friday, June 17, then why not enjoy an evening at Goodwood Racecourse for the Midsummer Black Tie Picnic.
Set against the backdrop of the rolling Sussex Downs, this unique event promises to be a memorable evening that epitomises all that is glorious about horseracing and entertaining at Goodwood.
The evening will begin on the Richmond Lawn, exclusively reserved for this event, where a Veuve Clicquot champagne reception will provide an idyllic start. Tables of four can be reserved on either the Lawn itself or the Double Trigger Rooftop, and a luxurious Goodwood hamper has been exclusively designed for the event.
Tickets can be booked on 01243 755022, as they can for the Goodwood Ball, a popular feature of the ‘Glorious’ meeting and held this year on Thursday, July 28.
First staged in the 1940s, the Raceweek Ball in Goodwood House is testament to why the five days of racing in July are seen not only as a sporting extravaganza but also a highlight of the English summer season.
The scene of lavish parties and elaborate entertainment for over 200 years, Goodwood House provides a unique social focus during the Festival meeting and this year’s Raceweek Ball promises to be a memorable occasion again.”
WINNING QUOTES RACE ONE
RACING UK HANDICAP
ENFORCER GETS HIS WAY
Enforcer, whose late dash was half a length too strong for Salinja in the final 50 yards of the Racing UK Handicap, will be off on his travels again at the weekend, with William Muir talking of running him in the valuable totesport Silver Bowl at Haydock.
The colt has now collected a 4lb penalty to add to his 7st 13lb for Saturday’s mile handicap, and the sponsors have cut his price from 20-1 to 12-1.
Muir was in some doubt about running Enforcer today as he was worried that that the ground might have been too fast, but a walk down the course soon put those fears to rest.
“I went about three furlongs down the course and was very happy with what I walked on,” he said. “Seamus (Buckley, raceday clerk of the course) told me yesterday that he would he happy to run horses on the ground and I think they have done a very good job. There is no jar.
“My horses are in very good form and as long as the ground at Haydock is easy enough - at the moment it is good to firm but there is lots of rain forecast - he will run.
“He ran a cracking race in the Esher Cup last time from a dreadful draw, but today he had a much better draw - it is all swings and roundabouts with things like that in racing - and Martin (Dwyer) was able to creep there up the inside, though he kept getting stopped and in the end he did not have a very hard race.
“He deserved to win a good race, this fellow as he always does his best for you, puts his head down and has a go.”
Martin Dwyer added: “He is the right type of horse for Goodwood as he is a strong finisher. They went quick and he really came good under me at half-way - then it was a question of finding a gap but it all panned out.
“It can be tricky riding this course but it is always easy when you have the right horse. You do need a bit of luck. I took the option to save ground on the inside and it paid off.”
Race One: Racing UK Heritage Handicap
BRITTAIN FINDS ANOTHER SURPRISE PACKET
Clive Brittain is renowned for producing surprise-packets, and the Newmarket trainer rewarded each-way punters when saddling 50-1 shot Asharon to finish third - beaten half a length and the same - behind Enforcer and Salinja in the opening £50,000 Racing UK Heritage Handicap.
Brittain said: “I could not believe the price, but they always allow mine to go off at huge odds, so perhaps I should not be so surprised.
“Asharon has always been a decent horse but, though he likes to come from off the pace, he got too far behind in his last two races, so I told Richard (Quinn) not to lay too far out of the ground.
“There is a decent race in Asharon, and it might well be the totesport Cambridgeshire at Newmarket in the autumn.”
Amanda Perrett, who trained runner-up Salinja, said: “He was probably in front too long - there is a lot to look at when you lead that far out.”
JOCKEYS DESCRIBE THE GROUND
Johnny Murtagh and Richard Quinn, who filled the places in the opener at Goodwood, agreed that it was “good fast ground”, as did Jimmy Fortune, who rode unplaced Defi.
TWO BANS FROM FIRST RACE
The stewards enquired into interference which took place at the two-furlong pole in the Racing UK Handicap and found that Robert Winston had made a left-hand manoeuvre on Notnowcato, taking Asharon off his intended line. They found Winston guilty of careless riding and suspended him for three days (May 29-31).
In a separate incident approaching the final furlong, the stewards found that Salinja had interfered with Dhaular Dhar, and they deemed that it had been caused by careless riding by Johnny Murtagh, who rode Salinja in that he allowed his mount to drift right handed without taking reasonable steps to prevent it. They banned Murtagh for two days (May 29-30).
Race Two: Letheby & Christopher Predominate Stakes
Winner’s Quotes:
UNFURLED “IN THE MIX” FOR DERBY
No winner of the Letheby & Christopher-sponsored Predominate Stakes has gone on to land the Vodafone Derby since Troy in 1979, and bookmakers took the view that we did not see the winner of this year’s Blue Riband in Unfurled, who got home by a head from Indigo Cat in a muddling renewal to this prestigious Listed race.
Victor Chandler and totesport both offer 25/1 about Unfurled, who had won his maiden here earlier in the month by 10 lengths, and, while Paddy Power and Coral were slightly more impressed, both quote the John Dunlop-trained colt at 20/1.
However, Richard Quinn, who went for home fully five furlongs out and, though headed briefly in the last 200 yards, battled back for victory, was keeping his options open as far as Epsom is concerned.
Quinn, who could also ride stablemate Kong, winner of the Lingfield Derby Trial, or Dante Stakes runner-up The Geezer in the Derby at Epsom Downs on June 4, said: “Jimmy (Fortune) slowed it down in front on Tragedian, so I decided to be positive on my horse, who is a galloper and lengthens rather than quickens.
“He ran all the way to the line and is still relatively lightly-raced. This was only his fourth race, and he is just learning the game.
“However, horses are so big and fragile that anything can go wrong between now and Derby Day, so it would be silly to make an early decision. I will talk to the connections of my three horses, but Unfurled has done nothing wrong there and he is certainly in the mix.”
Dunlop said: “Unfurled was a bit green, but he stays and he got the trip well there. He is a sensible uncomplicated horse, but he will never be flamboyant.
“It was a strange trial as they were four one-race maiden winners, but my fellow could not have done anything more. I could not compare him with Kong, and both will probably take their chance at Epsom.”
PLACED QUOTES RACE TWO
LETHEBY & CHRISTOPHER PREDOMINATE STAKES
NO DERBY PLANS YET
There were no firm plans about the Derby as far as either runner-up Indigo Cat or third-placed Belenus were concerned, though connections were satisfied with their performances.
“He is still green but he has run well and kept battling away,” said Aidan O’Brien’s travelling head lad Pat Keating. “I don’t know what thoughts the guv’nor has about the Derby.”
And Saeed bin Suroor, trainer of Belenus, was adamant that the colt can and will do better than this. “He is still green and needed this run; he will be spot on for his next race” he said, without specifying what that next race might be.
“He is still in the Derby, and we will have to see how he comes out of this race and talk about him. The others to consider for the Derby are Dubawi and Shamardal.” the trainer went on.
“I think that maybe on the evidence of this race his best trip may be a mile and a quarter, but maybe if he has the class, he will get a mile and a half.
“He has been very weak, but he has improved a lot mentally and physically. He has had sore shins but that was a long time ago and had no bearing on today’s race. Both Frankie (Dettori) and Kerrin McEvoy have ridden him at Newmarket since then and both have said he was absolutely fine.”
WINNING QUOTES RACE THREE
NORMANDIE STUD LUPE STAKES
QUINN’S TRIAL DOUBLE
Richard Quinn wasted no time in adding to his Unfurled gains(5.6/1 double) when Something Exciting took the next step in living up to her ambitious name when she came home a ready winner of the Normandie Stud Lupe Stakes, leading to a drastic reduction to her price for the Vodafone Oaks.
She has been cut to as low as low as 12-1 (Ladbrokes), though totesport and Paddy Power were initially less cautious and offered 16-1 about the daughter of Halling. Vcbet quote her at 14-1. There was plenty of 33-1 available about the filly before the race, but totesport’s 16-1 did not last long and they were soon in the 12-1 camp.
“I am very happy with that,” said the filly’s trainer David Elsworth after Quinn’s very confident ride - very different in style from the tactics he adopted on Unfurled - had resulted in Something Exciting beating long-time leader Thakafaat by a length and a half.
“We did have her in the Guineas but she did not come in time, so we waited for an Oaks campaign with her,” Elsworth went on “and this was the race we chose to start her in.
“She is a well balanced filly and handled the undulations here well enough, so I am sure she will handle the course at Epsom. As far as stamina is concerned, I have no doubt about her getting the trip; I think the further she goes the better she will go. There is bags of stamina in her pedigree.
“Dangers? Of course there are dangers and we’ve got to get her there to start with. We had a bit of a scare last night with her when she was lame on one foot, but luckily it turned out to be only a shoe problem and we were able to sort it out. That just shows the sort of thing that can happen even at the last minute.”
Thakafaat, who had won a handicap off a mark of only 82 at Pontefract three weeks ago, delighted John Dunlop when getting some valuable black type in chasing home Oaks-bound Something Exciting in the Listed Normandie Lupe Stakes.
Dunlop said: “Before Pontefract it was hard to rate Thakafaat as a Group filly, but she is a nice, genuine sort who is clearly improving.
“She would have appreciated more give in the ground, but I was pleased with that and we will have to sit down and think about where to go next.
“She would have to be supplemented for the Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot at York, which would not be out of the question, or we could keep her for something like the Lancashire Oaks at Haydock.”
Amanda Perrett, who trains third-placed Corcoran, said: “That was very pleasing. She is entered in the Coronation Stakes, but it looks as if she needs to step up in trip and there are plenty of nice races at around a mile and a quarter.”
Race Four: Baker Tilly Trophy
Winner’s Quotes:
NICHOLLS DUO STRIKE RIGHT CHORD
Dandy Nicholls had told everybody who would listen that Strike Up The Band was “a machine”, and his smart two-year-old colt underlined his undoubted potential when winning what was a “rough house” for the Listed Baker Tilly Trophy.
Strike Up The Band, who had won first time out at Pontefract before being unluckily beaten at Chester, justified 15-8 favouritism when seeing off Crocodile Bay and Puskas to win with a bit to spare under Adrian Nicholls, son of the trainer.
Dandy, celebrating his first juvenile winner at Goodwood, said: “This is one of my favourite courses - they know how to look after the horses and owners and trainers, so this means a lot to me.
“Strike Up The Band has been a serious tool from day one. He goes past Rudi’s Pet on the gallops as if he is standing still and, though that horse is getting on a bit, he did win a King George V Stakes here and is some lead horse.
“I told the owners that they could fill their boots before Pontefract, and now we will go to Royal Ascot at York. I will put him in both the Norfolk and Coventry Stakes and decide nearer the day. Maybe we will run him in both!”
Nicholls also praised his owners for standing by Adrian, who got some flak from punters for getting beaten on the Roodee.
He added: “The boys have been grand, and Adrian is learning all the time. Kieren and the others are riding in these top races down here every day of the week, but he stood his ground and did not let us down.”
Adrian, who has never had a winner at Royal Ascot, was lavish in his praise of Strike Up The Band.
He said: “Everything went wrong at Chester and he has won here despite everything going wrong again. I got a bump from Where’s That Tiger, but my horse has so much toe and he got us out of trouble. He is a very good horse.”
TWO MORE SUSPENSIONS
There was a sting in the tail for Adrian Nicholls after his triumph on Strike Up The Band in the Baker Tilly Trophy.
The stewards considered that he had interfered with Where’s That Tiger rather than the other way round and suspended him for two days (May 29-30) for careless riding, while Shane Kelly, who rode Crocodile Bay, was found guilty of the same offence in a separate incident, having hampered Memphis Man.
Kelly was also suspended for the same two days.
PLACED QUOTES RACE FOUR
BAKER TILLY TROPHY
TWICE A LOSER
You could forgive Jamie Osborne if he had a somewhat resigned expression after seeing his Crocodile Bay go down to favourite Strike Up The Band in the Listed Baker Tilly Trophy, as this was the second time he had lost out in battles involving the winner.
“I was under-bidder for him at Doncaster and now he has gone and beaten me here,” said the trainer ruefully as he looked back to the day wen Strike Up The Band went through the sales ring as a yearling.
“I decided that 42,000 guineas was enough for a horse by Cyrano de Bergerac (the winner’s sire) and that I should not go any further,” he said, “so give Dandy (Nicholls, the winner’s trainer) his due he was brave and he was right - he is a very fast horse.
“Still, I don’t think I can complain about what we have done with Crocodile Bay. He cost only 5,200 guineas and he has won twice for us before this.
“This was the first time he has raced on ground as fast as this and, from his style of running here, he looks as if he would get a stiffer five furlongs or an easy six.
“So in the next month or so that would bring in the National Stakes over the stiff five at Sandown, or the Woodcote over the easy six at Epsom. I expect he will go for one of those. I think I have a good bunch of two-year-olds.”
WINNING QUOTES RACE FIVE
M-REAL MAIDEN STAKES
A SAD MEMORY
“There is quite a poignant note to that,” said Richard Gaskell, representing winning trainer Marcus Tregoning, after Ballymacoll Stud’s War At Sea had won the M-Real Maiden Stakes from the strong-finishing Tamalain.
“It was nine years ago that Simon Weinstock (whose family owns Ballymacoll) died.
“War At Sea is still a bit green and in the circumstances he has done it well as the ground is quite quick.
“He looked as if he would stay further and we shall have to see what sort of rating he is given by the handicapper.”
Mark Perrett, whose wife Amanda trains runner-up Tamalain, said: “that sums up our day, everything is being placed but not winning. This filly reared up as the stalls were opening and lost several lengths. She has done well to finish as close as she did.”
Race Six: Thomas Eggar Handicap
Winner’s Quotes:
EDEN PROVES ROCK SOLID
Eden Rock ran out the easiest winner of the day and was also responsible for the training performance of the day when landing a snug neck victory in the Thomas Eggar Handicap.
Ridden by Kieren Fallon for his old guv’nor Sir Michael Stoute, Eden Rock (11-2) came from off the pace to touch off Ridge Boy close home, though he looked to have far more in hand than the winning margin might suggest.
Bookmakers were certainly impressed, with Corals making him 4-1 favourite for next month’s Royal Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot at York.
This was Eden Rock’s first race in 604 days, and Jimmy Scott, Stoute’s representative, explained: “He suffered a hairline fracture of the pelvis as a back-end two-year-old, and the boss has given him plenty of time.
“We always thought a lot of him and he has a wonderfully laid-back attitude, which has helped his recovery. He went down to post beautifully - and he came back pretty well, too!”
PLACED QUOTES RACE SIX
THOMAS EGGAR HANDICAP
“A GROUP HORSE”
Richard Hannon, junior, whose father trains runner-up Ridge Boy, had no doubt that the future of the winner Eden Rock lies outside handicaps.
“That is a Group horse,” he said firmly after Ridge Boy, having seen off all but one of his rivals, had no answer as the winner came from out of the clouds to win as he liked.
He then thought further. “I want to see the video of the race. He must have jumped in at halfway!”
EGAN BANNED FOLLOWING FALL
John Egan, unplaced on On The Wing in the Thomas Eggar Handicap, received a five-day suspension (May 29-31, June 1-2), having been found guilty of careless riding in an incident which saw Steve Drowne unshipped on Nouveau Riche.
Drowne emerged unscathed and, while Egan plans to appeal against the verdict, Geoffrey Forster, the stewards secretary, had no doubt that they had reached the correct conclusion.
He said: “Egan allowed his filly to drift left, and he made no effort to straighten her until it was too late.
“He ought to have changed his whip hand, and his action caused a chain reaction which involved five horses and ultimately ended up with one horse coming down.”
However, Egan saw things differently and plans to protest.
He said: “How can they give me five days for that? I agree that I impeded one horse, but it was no more than a brush and I did not cause the fall.”
WINNING QUOTES RACE SEVEN
SINGLETON HANDICAP
LAVELLE OFF THE GOODWOOD MARK
Emma Lavelle enjoyed her first winner at Goodwood when Stage Secret romped clear through the final furlong of the Singleton Handicap to win by three and a half lengths from Greenwood.
“He has always looked as if he would be a better horse on the grass than on the all weather,” she said. “The ground was desperate when he ran so badly at Windsor last time, but after he has won like that I shall have to look at running him again at Lingfield on Saturday.”
Miss Lavelle’s horses, both on the flat and jumping, are in tremendous form and she is relishing the experience. “I am bottling this moment, so that when things are gloomy in the depths of the winter I can look back at times like these and remember what it was like,” she said.
Steve Drowne, who rode the winner, ended up on the ground for the second successive race. But whereas in the previous event his horse had been almost knocked over by another runner, this time no other horse was involved as Drowne came off after the horses had passed the post. He was none the worse.
BETTING NEWS
Those with very long memories wil recall Ferenc Puskas as one of the many stars of the Hungarian football team which humiliated England 6-3 (1953) and 7-1 in the early 1950s, but those of a more modern generation will not need to look so far back if things go according to plan in the Baker Tilly Trophy (3.45).
The two-year-old Puskas, appropriately trained by former star player Mick Channon, is very much the flavour of the day in the offices with Paddy Power and Vcbet reporting good money for him as both firms have trimmed his odds by a point to 4-1.
Those two firms have had different reactions to Notnowcato in the opening Racing UK Handicap (2.10). While Vcbet have reduced his price from 11-4 to 2-1, Powers have gone in the opposite direction and knocked him out from 2-1 to 9-4. This is in the face of support for Salinja (11-2 to 9-2) and rank outsider Dream Tonic, trimmed from 28-1 to 20-1.
In the Thomas Eggar Handicap (4.55) Powers have cut Nouveau Riche by a point to 7-1 and likewise trimmed Libre to 10-1, while they have found Grizedale (13-2 to 6-1) and Snap (6-1 to 5-1) popular in the Singleton Handicap (5.30). In view of those moves, Pintle has eased half a point to 6-1.
MORE BETTING NEWS
The swings and roundabouts involving Notnowcato in the opening Racing UK Handicap (2.10) have shown another positive sign in the totesport camp where the colt is at 15-8 from the morning 5-2.
And in the Baker Tilly Trophy (3.45) they have joined those who have been laying Puskas, who has come in by a point from 9-2 to 7-2.
GOOD TO FIRM GROUND
Rod Fabricius, managing director at Goodwood, described the ground for the opening day of their May meeting as “genuine
GOOD TO FIRM GOING.”
Fabricius said: “Our racecourse watering programme began in the middle of last week and continued right through until yesterday.
“We are very pleased with the condition of the course and, with rain forecast as we go through the meeting, I do not expect the ground to quicken up.
“The weathermen tell us that today will probably remain dry, but that rain will arrive overnight and continue tomorrow, with showers also predicted for Friday.”
FABRICIUS IN OPTIMISTIC MOOD
Browsing through the fields for Goodwood today, Rod Fabricius, Managing Director at the Sussex course, described it as “the strongest overall card for the three-day May Meeting that I can ever remember.”
Fabricius said: “This is the first time that we have run both the trials (Letheby & Christopher Predominate Stakes and the Normandie Stud Lupe Stakes) on the same day, and we also have a strong supporting event in our new Listed race for two-year-olds, the Baker Tilly Trophy, which has attracted a quality field of eight speed merchants.”
Goodwood has already staged one fixture this year, on Saturday, April 30, when John Dunlop’s Unfurled, a runner in today’s Predominate, won his maiden by a spectacular 10 lengths.
Fabricius added: “We had a good crowd for that day, and, hopefully, moving this meeting back 24 hours for the first time to make it a Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, as they have done at both Chester and York, will help increase attendances.
“Friday is commercially a better day than Tuesday and, though it is not over popular with the casual racegoers, it goes down very well with the hospitality side, and bookings in that area have been very encouraging.
“We have 21 days racing at Goodwood this year, including four evenings and three Sundays, and we are particularly excited about our new fixture on Saturday, May 28, which features two Listed races and has been transferred from Kempton.
Everything is set fair, and we can only hope that the weather is kind to us.”
RICHARD HANNON TO RECEIVE ROLLS-ROYCE DICK HERN AWARD
Wiltshire-based Richard Hannon is to receive the Rolls-Royce Dick Hern Award today, Wednesday, May 18. The award, sponsored for the second time by Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Ltd, whose manufacturing plant is located on the Goodwood Estate, is presented each year to the trainer of the most winners at Goodwood the previous season.
Richard Hannon, one of the most successful trainers of the last 30 years and handler of one of the largest strings in the country, trained 10 winners at Goodwood in 2004 and will receive the beautiful bronze by Philip Blacker from Rnmolls-Royce Motor Cars Chairman and Chief Executive, Ian Robertson. Richard Hannon’s stable staff will receive a cheque for £1,000.
Richard Hannon will be arriving at the Racecourse in a Rolls-Royce Phantom and there is a Phantom on display at Goodwood today.
The Dick Hern Award was introduced in 2003 in recognition and remembrance of one of the most successful and influential trainers of the twentieth century. ‘The Major’ Dick Hern regarded Goodwood as one of his favourite racecourses and he trained a number of high-profile winners at the West Sussex track. Two of his most talented horses won major races at Goodwood, with Brigadier Gerard landing the Sussex Stakes in 1971 and Troy winning the 1979 Predominate Stakes en route to victory in the Epsom Classic two weeks later.
Ian Robertson, Chairman and Chief Executive of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, commented,
“We are delighted to be part of the world-class race season at Goodwood, one of the most beautiful racecourses in the world. Sponsoring the Dick Hern Award for the second year enhances an already special rapport between the two companies.”
GOODWOOD WIN UNPRECEDENTED THIRD GROUNDSTAFF AWARD
Goodwood Racecourse has long been considered one of the most beautiful racecourses in the world and it was recently revealed that the West Sussex track had been awarded the Neil Wyatt Groundstaff Award for the best kept Flat racecourse in Britain for 2004.
This is the third time in nine years that Goodwood has won the Tote-sponsored award, having been successful in both 1998 and 2003. The award is named in honour of Neil Wyatt, who retired as the Jockey Club’s Senior Racecourse Inspector in 1996, and he will be presenting the award to Goodwood’s groundstaff team in the Parade Ring at 12.30pm on Thursday, May 19. Neil Wyatt will be joined by Jockey Club Racecourse Inspector, Peter Hobbs, and Peter Jones, Chief Executive of the Tote.
Seamus Buckley, Assistant Clerk of the Course and Grounds Manager, said:
“It is a great honour for Goodwood to win this award for the third time and it is testament to the dedication and skill of our professional groundstaff team.
“We have had to contend with two particularly difficult seasons with a severe lack of rainfall in 2003, followed by monsoon like conditions last autumn.
“It is important to us that owners, trainers and jockeys have confidence in what we are doing here at Goodwood.”
Jimmy Fortune, who rode the most winners over the five days of ‘Glorious Goodwood’ in 2004, commented:
“It is always a pleasure to ride at Goodwood. It is definitely the best-kept Flat racecourse in the country and the groundstaff thoroughly deserve this award.”
History of the Goodwood May Meeting
Goodwood may have been at the forefront of British racing for more than two centuries, but it is hard to believe that 40 years ago the entire racing calendar at the Sussex course comprised of just four days of the Glorious Goodwood July Festival.
A two-day fixture was introduced in August, 1965, which has since evolved around the Celebration Mile which was first staged two years later. The May meeting itself was started in 1968, and the Predominate Stakes was first run in 1970.
The Letheby & Christopher Predominate Stakes is the feature of the three-day May Meeting and is named after the three-time winner of the Goodwood Stakes (1958-1960) who also won the 1961 Goodwood Cup.
The chief supporting race is the Normandie Stud Lupe Stakes, founded in 1972, which is a trial for the Oaks. Lupe herself won the Classic back in 1970 and was unbeaten in all her starts in Britain over three seasons, though she never ran at Goodwood.
The inaugural running of the Predominate was won by Her Majesty The Queen's Charlton - named after the footballer Bobby Charlton - a useful stayer who also won the 1971 Henry II Stakes. He was trained by Major Dick Hern, who won the race on another five occasions, including in 1979 with Troy who remains the only Derby winner to have won the Predominate en route to Epsom classic glory.
However, the race has also produced some top-class performers down the years. Minster Son, Hern's final winner of the race in 1988, also took Goodwood’s Gordon Stakes prior to winning the St Leger in the autumn. The 2003 Predominate winner High Accolade followed a similar route, and subsequently finished runner-up in both the Gordon Stakes and the St Leger.
But the best horse to have won the Predominate in recent years must surely be Dubai Millennium. The apple of the eye of Sheikh Mohammed, this superb racehorse used the Predominate Stakes as a springboard to the 1999 Derby. Despite staying the 1m 2f trip - the Predominate has been run over 1m 3f since 2000 - the colt did not stay the extra two furlongs at Epsom. But a drop in trip was what he needed, as he went on to take a string of Group One races over the next 13 months, including the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, a devastating win in the 2000 Dubai World Cup and the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes.
Pentire was another talented winner of the Predominate Stakes (1995). Geoff Wragg's charge missed the Derby, but won the 'Ascot Derby' instead when taking the Edward VII Stakes at the Royal Meeting. Pentire was also victorious in the Irish Champion Stakes in 1995, and won the following summer's King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes at Ascot.
The Lupe Stakes generated an Oaks winner just five years ago, when Henry Cecil's Love Divine was successful in the race. The first running of the Listed race was won by the 9-1 shot Star Ship, who was trained by Ryan Price.
The 1982 winner, Height Of Fashion was owned by Her Majesty The Queen. The filly had previously been successful in the Fillies' Mile at Ascot, and went on to land the Princess of Wales Stakes’ at Newmarket before becoming a great broodmare.
Height Of Fashion was ridden by Willie Carson who was easily the most successful jockey in the race, having partnered six winners - including four in a row between 1992 and 1995, all for local trainer, John Dunlop. Based locally near Arundel, Dunlop won the Lupe five times during the 1990s.
In addition to the Predominate and the Lupe, the three-day programme also includes the 30th anniversary running of the Peters Fairline Festival Stakes.
The Festival Stakes is run over nearly 10 furlongs and its winners include Rose Bowl, Ile De Bourbon, Rainbow Quest, Faithful Son and Mubtaker. The great Mtoto 'won' this race in 1988 - only for the stewards to void the result as all runners were sent on to the wrong course! No such trouble, though, for the 1994 victor, Alderbrook; who went on to win the Champion Hurdle a year later.

20 OF EUROPE'S FINEST GO FORWARD FOR THE VODAFONE CORONATION CUP
The £250,000 Vodafone Coronation Cup looks sure to feature a glittering array of Europe's finest middle-distance horses following the May 17 forfeit stage, details of which are revealed today.
Among the 20 remaining entries for the Group One race on Vodafone Ladies' Day, Friday, June 3, are the 2004 Arc de Triomphe victor Bago, successful on his seasonal reappearance in the Prix Ganay at Longchamp while other Gallic interest comes in the form of Pride, who ran second to Bago in the Prix Ganay but was subsequently disqualified for causing interference, meaning that Reefscape was promoted to second.
All three could reoppose in the Vodafone Coronation Cup with Reefscape representing Andre Fabre, the most successful current trainer in the Vodafone Coronation Cup. The other French entry is Lord Du Sud, a Group Two winner at Longchamp last season.
Aidan O'Brien is still seeking his first success in the most prestigious 12-furlong contest and has a quintet to choose from - Ace, Acropolis, the consistent Powerscourt who was victorious in the Group One Tattersalls Gold Cup last season, recent Newbury Listed scorer Wolfe Tone and Yeats, one-time favourite for last year's Vodafone Derby who made a pleasing return to action when finishing second in the Group Three Mooresbridge Stakes at the Curragh on May 2. Further Irish interest comes in the form of Grey Swallow, last year's Irish Derby winner.
Godolphin is seeking its third success in the Vodafone Coronation Cup and has three entries remaining, including last year's Arc de Triomphe second Cherry Mix, the 2005 Ascot Gold Cup victor Papineau and Razkalla.
Warrsan will create a record if he can win a third Vodafone Coronation Cup success and should strip fitter following his reappearance in the Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket. Another strong contender from Newmarket is Alkaased, who created a very favourable impression when winning the Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket on his seasonal reappearance, after which trainer Luca Cumani nominated the Vodafone Coronation Cup as the next target for the five-year-old.
Further emphasising the international nature of the race, there is one entry from Germany in Shirocco, a Group One winner in Italy last year.
Completing the field are Alkaadhem and Mubtaker from the Marcus Tregoning yard and the Mark Johnston-trained Bandari.
Meanwhile, only one horse has been removed from the £75,000 Vodafone "Dash" following the forfeit stage, which has a £100,000 bonus if the course record of 53.6s is broken, and there are 41 going forward for the £75,000 Vodafone Rose Bowl, the big handicap on Vodafone Ladies' Day, Friday, June 3.
Stephen Wallis, Managing Director at Epsom Downs, commented: "The Vodafone Coronation Cup is building up into a most intriguing contest.
"It will be fascinating to see how the overseas contenders compare to the best Britain can offer, while there would surely be no result more popular than a third victory for that Epsom Downs specialist Warrsan.
"The two early-closing handicaps at the Vodafone Derby Festival look like having punter appeal in their own right, with competitive fields and open betting."
