STAR-STUDDED INTERNATIONAL LINE-UP FOR 2005 DARLEY JULY CUP
A star-studded entry of 71 has been received for the £250,000 Group One Darley July Cup, Europe's premier sprint and the highlight of Newmarket's three-day July Meeting on Thursday, July 7. This year, the famous six-furlong contest promises once again to be a truly international affair with some of the best sprinters from Australia, Canada, France, Ireland, Japan and the USA entered alongside the leading home-based contenders.
Paul Perry, who went so close with Choisir two years ago, has entered Fastnet Rock. The son of Danehill has already won two of the leading sprints "Down Under" this year with victories in the Group One Lightning Stakes at Flemington in February and the Group One Oakleigh Plate at Caulfield later in the same month. With Choisir going off 9-4 favourite in 2003 and Exceed and Excel starting the 4-1 favourite in last year's contest, the last two Darley July Cup market leaders have been Australian challengers.
Hideyuki Mori provided the first Japanese-trained winner in Britain when he sent out Agnes World to success in the 2000 Darley July Cup. He also saddled Seeking The Dia to finish 12th in the race last year. This year the trainer has made an entry for Keeneland Swan, a dual Group Three winner in the land of the rising sun and runner-up in the prestigious Takamatsunomiya Kinen at Chukyo in March.
The two potential challengers from North America are Soaring Free from the Canadian stable of Mark Frostad and Wrzeszcz, trained in the USA by Tom Amoss. Soaring Free, who was also entered for the Darley July Cup last year, is a high-class performer over both sprint distances and a mile, with his biggest success to date coming in the Group One Atto Mile at Woodbine in September while he has also finished fifth and fourth in the latest two runnings of the Breeders' Cup Mile. Wrzeszcz has been running in turf sprint races in the USA, most recently finishing fourth in the Group Three Aegon Turf Sprint at Churchill Downs on May 6.
John Hammond supplies the one French entry in Miss Emma, a Group Three scorer at Maisons-Laffitte last season.
Aidan O'Brien, fresh from landing both the UltimatePoker.com 1000 and 2000 Guineas at Newmarket earlier this month, has 11 entries to choose from as he bids for a third Darley July Cup victory following Stravinsky (1999) and Mozart (2001). Footstepsinthesand, the UltimatePoker.com 2000 Guineas hero, could revert to sprinting in this contest while Oratorio, fourth in the Guineas, is also entered. The master of Ballydoyle could also be represented by Airwave, third behind Oasis Dream in 2003 when trained by Henry Candy, as well as Antonius Pius, seventh last year.
Other Irish contenders could include Damson, winner of last season's Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot and runner-up in the Sky Bet Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket. She was the ante-post favourite for the UltimatePoker.com 1000 Guineas before defecting at the 11th hour due to a late setback, while Democratic Deficit was successful in the bet365 Craven Stakes at Newmarket before finishing sixth in the UltimatePoker.com 2000 Guineas.
The Darley July Cup is one of the few races to have eluded the Maktoum family's Godolphin operation which has six entries this year, including Dubawi, fifth on his seasonal reappearance when hot-favourite for the UltimatePoker.com 2000 Guineas, Byron, a Group Two winner at Goodwood last year and also last season's Coventry Stakes runner-up Council Member.
Other leading hopes include the Roger Charlton's Avonbridge, winner of the Vcbet Palace House Stakes at Newmarket earlier this month when he defeated Ashdown Express, runner-up in last season's Darley July Cup to Frizzante. Frizzante's trainer James Fanshawe could be represented this year by Soar, triumphant in the Lowther Stakes at York in 2004. The best of the older generation is last year's UltimatePoker.com 1000 Guineas hero Attraction, who if she were to line up would be running over sprint distances for the first time since her juvenile career.
Tim Easterby has a strong hand with triple Group One scorer Somnus as well as last season's Golden Jubilee Stakes victor Fayr Jag engaged, while Pastoral Pursuits, trained by Hughie Morrison, looked a progressive performer in 2004 when taking the Group Two Park Stakes at Doncaster.
Michael Prosser, Clerk of the Course at Newmarket, commented: "So far in this century, Agnes World has won the Darley July Cup for Japan, Mozart for Ireland and the Aussies have had the last two beaten favourites. I doubt you would find a more international race in Britain and it is now firmly established as one of the world's great sprinting contests.
"We are obviously thrilled once again to have received a plethora of international entries with horses from Europe, Asia, North America and Australia engaged. There is quality throughout the entries and it will be fascinating to see how the international challengers compare to the best that Britain and Ireland can offer. "
The three-day July Meeting runs from Tuesday, July 5 through to Thursday, July 7.

50 ENTERED FOR VODAFONE ROSE BOWL & 35 POSSIBLES FOR THE VODAFONE DASH
Entries are revealed today for the two most valuable handicaps at the Vodafone Derby Meeting, the Vodafone Rose Bowl and the Vodafone "Dash".
The Vodafone Rose Bowl, run over 10 furlongs and 18 yards on Ladies Day, Friday, June 3, has received an excellent entry of 50 for the 2005 renewal. The prize fund has increased substantially from the 2004 figure of £40,000 to £75,000.
Last year's race was won by the John Dunlop-trained Persian Lightning (9st 8lb) and he is entered once again along with both the third Shahzan House (8st 13lb) and the fourth Counsel's Opinion (9st 6lb), who was also runner-up in 2002.
Heading the weights are the Michael Jarvis-trained duo of St Andrews (9st 9lb) and Fruhlingssturm (9st 10lb), who finished fourth and fifth respectively last time out in the Group Three Huxley Stakes at Chester on May 5.
Other classy entries include John Gosden's Privy Seal (9st 5lb), successful in the Listed Easter Stakes at Kempton Park last season, and Spanish Don (9st 4lb), who caused a shock when landing the Cambridgeshire at Newmarket in 2004 at odds of 100/1 before going on to land the Listed James Seymour Stakes at the same course later in the campaign.
Sir Michael Stoute, successful two years ago with Akshar, has two entries to choose from - Lord Mayor (9st 5lb), a winner on Vodafone Derby Day last year in the Vodafone Live! Handicap, and Promotion (9st 2lb), owned by the Queen and an encouraging fourth on his seasonal reappearance at Newmarket earlier this month.
Another Newmarket trainer who looks to hold a strong hand is Sir Mark Prescott with three entries. These are Pedrillo (9st 1lb), not seen out since disappointing when favourite for the Cambridgeshire at Newmarket in October, Masafi (8st 8lb), a seven-time winner in 2004, and Cordial (8st 4lb), successful twice on the all-weather at Lingfield this season.
An interesting entry is the Andrew Reid-trained Eccentric (7st 12lb). The four-year-old showed rapid progress on the all-weather during the winter, culminating with his defeat of Blythe Knight (9st 5lb) in the Winter Derby at Lingfied on March 19. It will be interesting to see if he is capable of exploiting his much lower turf rating.
Two horses coming into the race on the back of a win are Tiger Tiger (8st 10lb), a winner at Chester last week after which trainer Jamie Poulton nominated the Vodafone Rose Bowl as the four-year-old's next target, and Kew Green (9st 5lb), victorious on his latest three starts in a handicap at Lingfield, in the Rosebery Handicap at Kempton and last Saturday in the Suffolk Handicap at Newmarket, where he scored well by four lengths from Spanish Don.
The £75,000 Vodafone Dash' Handicap, run over the fastest five furlongs in the world on Vodafone Derby Day, Saturday, June 4, has attracted 35 of the quickest sprint handicappers in Britain and France.
Fire Up The Band (9st 6lb) was expected to need the run when scoring for trainer David Nicholls at Chester's May Festival, the six-year-old making all to deny Fonthill Road by half a length, and he should improve for his seasonal bow.
Robert Cowell's Forever Phoenix (9st 1lb) provided her trainer with the biggest success of his career when winning a handicap at Nad Al Sheba in Dubai in February, running on well to master Prince Aaron by the narrowest of margins.
French-based trainer Rupert Pritchard-Gordon could launch an international raid courtesy of Madame Topflight (8st 3lb), who was only beaten half a length into third by Beautifix and Cammies Future in a Listed event at Deauville in August.
The David Barker-trained Celtic Mill (9st 10lb) won four times last season and the Celtic Swing gelding is another to have enjoyed an excellent seasonal debut, finishing just over two lengths adrift of Avonbridge in fourth in the Group Three VCbet Palace House Stakes at Newmarket on the last day of April.
Milton Bradley's sprinters are always worthy of consideration and the Chepstow-based trainer has three entries in the form of Corridor Creeper (9st 7lb), Cape Royal (9st 2lb) and Blue Tomato (8st 3lb).
Corridor Creeper actually won the Vodafone Dash' Trial Conditions Stakes at Goodwood last month, staying on well from over a furlong out to beat Smokin Beau by two lengths, Cape Royal won at Doncaster in April and then finished third, beaten two heads by the veteran Bishops Court (8st 12lb), in the Blue Square 0800 587 0200 Handicap, a race that he had won the previous season, at Epsom on April 20, while Blue Tomato won three races in 2003 and was runner-up on his last start.
Other notable entries include the John Quinn-trained Caribbean Coral (8st 12lb) and Plateau (8st), another trained by David Nicholls, first and second in last year's renewal, as well as Bryan Smart's pair of Bond City (8st 9lb) and Bond Becks (8st).
Bond City was just over two lengths adrift of Westbrook Blue in third in a five-furlong handicap at Chester last week, while Bond Becks did not run last year and plenty of improvement can be expected after his well-beaten return last week.
Stephen Wallis, Managing Director of Epsom Downs Racecourse, commented: "The substantial increase in prize money certainly seems to have paid dividends with the Vodafone Rose Bowl which has received an excellent entry of 50.
"It is great to see so many favourites and plenty of new contenders in the Vodafone "Dash." The contest looks sure to provide a tremendous spectacle with the best sprint handicappers around thundering down the famous five-furlong straight at Epsom Downs."

BHB DELIGHTED TO REINSTATE OWNERS' PREMIUM SCHEME
The British Horseracing Board is pleased to announce that its Owners' Premium Scheme, which it reluctantly suspended at the start of 2005, has been reinstated, with any payments due as a result of performances since the beginning of the suspension to be made retrospectively.
In the light of the European Court of Justice Judgement in November 2004, the Board had unanimously agreed in December that, along with a number of other prudent expenditure reductions, the Scheme should be suspended. It had been forecast that Scheme payments by BHB would reach £3.2m in 2005.
Following the Levy Board's agreement to BHB's request to allocate funding to the Scheme in 2005 and 2006, it has been possible to lift the suspension, although the reduced sums available will necessitate payments being made at a lower rate than in 2004.
The revised terms of the Scheme are that a 5% premium on the win and placed prize money due under Order 194, up to a maximum payment per race of £5,000 for a winner and £2,000 for a placed horse, will be made to eligible horses in the following races during 2005:
Flat:
Two and three year olds in all Class 1 to 4 races and in Class 5 Maiden and Novice races. Prior to 26th March, when the Flat Classification System was revised, two and three year olds in all Class 1 to 3 races and in Class 4 Maiden and Novice races.
Jump:
Horses from three to six years old in all Class A to D races, all Class E Novice, Maiden and Beginners' Steeple Chases and Novice and Maiden Hurdle races, and all National Hunt Flat races. For fillies and mares, a 10% premium of the win and placed prize money, up to the maximum payments stated above, will be paid.
Registration of eligible yearlings, born in 2004, will be accepted between 1st June and 31st December 2005. It will also be possible to declare provisional eligibility for foals to be entered in the foal sales.
The Board has agreed to offer discounted registration fees to members of both the Thoroughbred Breeders Association and the Racehorse Owners Association. The fees, which will go towards the administration of the Scheme only, will be:
Horses registered as yearlings:
* £32 per horse for TBA and ROA members
* £40 per horse for non-TBA and non-ROA members
Horses registered for provisional eligibility and sold as foals at Tattersalls, Doncaster Bloodstock Sales or Brightwells:
* £20 per horse for TBA and ROA members
* £25 per horse for non-TBA and non-ROA members
BHB Chief Executive Greg Nichols said today: "Given that the creation of the Owners' Premium Scheme was BHB's own initiative, it was disheartening that the Board had no alternative to suspension just as the Scheme had really begun to show its worth. However, we were determined to ensure that everything possible was done to lift the suspension as soon as possible.
"In response to our request, the Levy Board's commitment to allocate funds to the Scheme in both 2005 and 2006 will be widely welcomed and provides important stability and continuity. We will continue to work closely with the TBA, ROA and Sales Houses to promote the Scheme and its support of British-bred horses."
