ULTIMATEPOKER.COM GUINEAS FESTIVAL
RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE
NEWMARKET, SUNDAY MAY 1, 2005

ANOTHER EXCELLENT ATTENDANCE

Today’s crowd came to 15,234, a four per cent increase on the 2004 UltimatePoker.com 1000 Guineas day total of 14,667.

2003 - 16,797
2002 - 14,594
2001 - 13,967

Lisa Hancock, Managing Director of Newmarket Racecourses, commented: “It has been another fantastic day and we have seen another big crowd. The 2005 UltimatePoker.com Guineas Festival has been a resounding success, a sentiment which I am sure Kieren Fallon, Aidan O’Brien and the whole of the Coolmore team will agree with!”

GOOD CROWD YESTERDAY

Saturday’s attendance was 17,693, an increase of two per cent on last year’s figure of 17,346.

Crowd figures previously for UltimatePoker.com 2000 Guineas day were 16,778 in 2001, 16,741 the following year and 17,883 in 2003.

Lisa Hancock, Managing Director of Newmarket Racecourses, said: “It’s been a tremendous day with a really good atmosphere, with a big crowd enjoying the warm weather.

“The UltimatePoker.com 2000 Guineas produced a great story with Kieren Fallon registering his first Classic victory for his new employers, Coolmore, at his very first attempt.”

Race Four: UltimatePoker.com 1000 Guineas
Winner’s Quotes 1:

DOUBLE GUINEAS SCORER FALLON ON CLOUD NINE

Riding his luck, Kieren Fallon, who only rode Virginia Waters in the UltimatePoker.com 1000 Guineas because his original mount, former ante-post favourite Damson, scoped badly after her final workout, was in high spirits after emulating Lester Piggott (1970) by completing the classic double.

Fallon said: “I was confident that Footstepsinthesand would win the colts’ classic, but this has come as a bonus.

“Virginia Waters has been doing good work at home and has progressed well since she won her trial at Leopardstown, but this was a tough Guineas and I was also worried about the ground as she has been galloping in the soft at home.

“However, you had to be impressed with the way she quickened up. She relaxed and went to sleep at the back, but she changed gear running downhill and won really well.

“She has a fabulous attitude for a filly, and there must be a chance she will stay the Oaks distance. She has so much toe, but she is bred to get further and she was certainly not stopping out there.

“It has been a fantastic start to my new job. I am really enjoying the game so much more now that I back in Ireland.

“I was getting a bit stale and there was too much happening in my life. I needed to get away, but I have been getting so much encouragement from everybody at Ballydoyle and they are a great team to work for.

“I am 40, but the way I feel now I could go on for another 10 years. My ambition at the start of the season was to ride one classic winner. I’ve already ridden two and, if after York, things are still going great I will spend more time at home and try and become champion jockey in Ireland. That would be a big honour.”

Winner’s Quotes2:

VIRGINIA WATERS OAKS FAVOURITE

Virginia Waters, impressive winner of the UltimatePoker.com 1000 Guineas, is not entered in the Vodafone Oaks, but Aidan O’Brien, on a high after completing the Newmarket classic double, intimated that Sue Magnier’s filly could well be supplemented for Epsom, for which she is a top-priced 6/1 favourite with Cashmans.

O’Brien said: “Kitty O’Shea was our Oaks filly, but she is on the easy list and will need three weeks box rest, so that has ruled out a prep-race.

“If she does go to Epsom she will have to go straight there, and then only if everything goes without a hitch when she resumes exercise.

“However, Virginia Waters could well deputise if the boys decide to supplement her. She is out of a Sadler’s Wells mare, and she is more relaxed than she was last year, which gives us hope that she could stay.

“Kieren (Fallon) gave her a lovely ride. He has always been very positive about this filly and, after Leopardstown, I asked him if he thought she was a Guineas filly.

“He told me that he would need to ride her again in work before he could answer, but after her next piece of exercise he gave the thumbs up.

“Kieren is totally committed and is a great horseman. He minded the horses when the ground in Ireland was bad last month, and he is such an asset to the team.”

HISTORIC GUINEAS RECORD
Aidan O’Brien and Kieren Fallon became the first trainer/jockey to complete the UltimatePoker.com 2000 Guineas/ UltimatePoker.com 1000 Guineas since Noel Murless and George Moore attained this remarkable double with Royal Palace and Fleet in 1967. Royal Palace and Fleet were not however owned by the same person. Royal Palace was the property of Jim Joel, while Fleet belonged to R C Boucher.

The last owner, trainer and jockey combination to be successful in the 2000 Guineas was His Majesty King George VI, Fred Darling and Gordon Richards in 1942 with Big Game and Sun Chariot who were both leased from the National Stud.

Footstepsinthesand, yesterday’s UltimatePoker.com 2000 Guineas winner, and Virginia Waters, today’s UltimatePoker.com 1000 Guineas scorer, are both owned by Michael Tabor and Sue Magnier. They are the first owners to win the 2000 Guineas and 1000 Guineas in the same year since Prince Aly Khan prevailed with the Alec Head-trained Taboun, and Petite Etoile, trained by Noel Murless, in 1959.

The great Lester Piggott was the last rider to win the 2000 Guineas and 1000 Guineas in the same year for different trainers. The long fellow won the UltimatePoker.com 2000 Guineas on Vincent O’Brien’s Nijinsky and the fillies’ equivalent on Humble Duty, trained by Peter Walwyn, in 1970.

Today’s UltimatePoker.com 1000 Guineas was also the most open in betting terms in the Classic’s history according to Channel 4's betting expert John McCririck.

Footstepsinthesand won at 13/2 and Virginia Waters triumphed at 12/1, making it a 96.5/1 double.

MAIDS CAUSEWAY FINDS VIRGINIA WATERS TOO POWERFUL

UltimatePoker.com 1000 Guineas
Place Quotes

Barry Hills had predicted a big run from 5/1 favourite Maids Causeway and he was not far wrong as his filly found just Virginia Waters two and a half lengths too strong.

Hills said: “That was perfect and she’s run a great race - she’s just been beaten by a better horse, who came by and won it in a stride. Our filly has beaten the rest fair and square and this was probably a better race than the 2000 Guineas.

“She could go for the Irish 1,000 Guineas or the Coronation Stakes - I’d like to run her over a mile and two furlongs but not until the second half of the year. She’s not in the Oaks or the French Oaks but she could be supplemented.

“If we played our cards right, we could come back and win the Champion Stakes here.”

Michael Jarvis, trainer of third-placed Vista Bella, a further half a length away, said: “She’s run a great race - I felt that she was a very good filly even when she won her maiden on the all-weather.

“I was worried about the ground and I think that she showed her lack of racing experience today, getting left behind. But when she hit the rising ground she picked up well.

“I think that she will definitely get a mile and two furlongs. The Curragh would suit her and she could be supplemented for the Irish 1,000 Guineas - I’ll have to talk to the owner.

“I couldn’t be more pleased with her.”

O’BRIEN SEEKS FULL HOUSE

Success with Virginia Waters in today’s UltimatePoker.com 1000 Guineas would complete a full house of British classics for Aidan O’Brien.

Despite having sent out only three Group One winners last year, O’Brien made a dream start to this year’s Classic season, landing yesterday’s UltimatePoker.com 2000 Guineas with Footstepsinthesand.

That was the record-breaking Tipperary trainer’s third victory in the Newmarket colts’ classic, following King of Kings (1998) and Rock of Gibraltar (2002), which is only one fewer than his Ballydoyle predecessor, the legendary Vincent O’Brien (no relation), who triumphed with Sir Ivor (1968), Nijinsky (1970), Lomond (1983) and El Gran Senor (1984).

However, the UltimatePoker.com 1000 Guineas has so far eluded Aidan O’Brien, who came closest when runner-up with subsequent Oaks heroine Shahtoush behind Cape Verdi in 1998. Strangely enough, Vincent O’Brien found the fillies’ classic harder to win as well, recording one victory with Glad Rags in 1966.

Kieren Fallon, who has joined forces with the O’Brien team this year and was aboard Footstepsinthesand yesterday, will be doing his utmost to fill in the void on Virginia Waters, and the former champion jockey knows what it takes to win the fillies classic, having clocked up three victories in the race, on Sleepytime (1997) and Wince (1999) for Henry Cecil and on Russian Rhythm (2003) for Sir Michael Stoute.

Win Quotes

CROSSPEACE PREVAILS

Crosspeace won today’s opening Curtis Medical Handicap by a neck from Intoxicating.

Winning trainer Mark Johnston said: “That was great - he was a bit unlucky last time and I thought that it might be going to happen again. Maybe he needs to step up to a mile and he is not used to being in behind.
“I was in a bit of a panic as to whether he was going to get out but once he saw some daylight, it was no problem.”

Johnston went on to speak about Attraction’s gallop before racing with a stable companion.

“I was absolutely delighted and I couldn’t have been more pleased - it was spot on and she was relaxed. She was sweating up beforehand and I was amazed how relaxed she was afterwards.

“It is strong favourite now that she’ll go for the Champions Mile in Hong Kong against Silent Witness on May 14 rather than the Lockinge.

“It is £300,000 to the winner in Hong Kong and then, if she wins, she’ll got to Japan for the Yasuda Kinen, which is £466,000 to the winner - there is also a $1 million bonus for winning both.

“If she is beaten in Hong Kong, it is back to plan A which is the Queen Anne Stakes.

“I’m not too worried about tactics in Hong Kong - she doesn’t need to front run and if anything is going faster, they’re probably going too fast.

“She has changed quite a lot physically - last Friday she was 20 kilos more than her last racing weight - we came here to get some of the weight off but I’m not expecting for it all to come off. She has strengthened up.

“This (if going to Hong Kong) will be the first time that she has travelled by plane.”

GOING AFTER THE FIRST RACE

Royston Ffrench, the jockey of the winner, described the going as fast.

Richard Hughes said: “It’s beautiful ground.”

Frankie Dettori reported the going as firm as did Steve Carson while Jamie Spencer said the ground was “quick enough”.

Darryll Holland, however, stated that it was “not as quick as yesterday.”

Richard Hills thought it was “good quick ground despite the overnight watering.”

INTOXICATING SHAPES WITH PROMISE

Jockey Steve Carson believes that Intoxicating could develop into a useful handicapper, despite the colt being worn down in the last 100 yards and being beaten a neck by Crosspeace in the opening Curtis Medical Handicap.

Carson said: “That was only Intoxicating’s fourth run, and he is still green. I think there is better to come.

“He picked up well in the Dip, but he didn’t quite show the same sparkle as he had done last time.”

Intoxicating had finished two lengths behind Crosspeace at the Craven meeting but on 4lb better terms got a lot closer this time.

Race Two: VCbet Dahlia Stakes
Winner’s Quotes

TARFAH WINS TITANIC TUSSLE

Tarfah made it five wins from six starts when landing the Group Three Vcbet Dahlia Stakes following a titanic battle up the hill with Summitville and La Persiana.

Seb Sanders threw everything at Tarfah in the last 100 yards, and Gerard Butler’s filly reeled in the front-running Summitville in the dying strides to win by a neck.

Butler said: “Tarfah has been the apple of our eye for a long, long time. As a two-year-old, she showed a lot of ability on the gallops and we thought she’d be our Oaks filly, but she got injured and we have had to be patient.

“However, she has made up for lost time and she carried on where she left off when winning on her reappearance at Kempton.

“We galloped her the other morning and she kept tabs with Nayyir, so I knew she was well, and now we will think about the Group Two Ridgewood Pearl Stakes at The Curragh.

“That track will suit her as Seb reported that she got caught out in the Dip and only really found her stride when she met the rising ground.”

Sanders had to switch Tarfah and was adjudged to have slightly hampered La Persiana, a manoeuvre which prompted the stewards to give him a two-day ban.

Butler revealed that Nayyir will probably make his seasonal debut in the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury, though the Diomed Stakes at Epsom is also under consideration.

Red Bloom, the 5-4 favourite, was a huge disappointment, being the first beaten and trailing in fifth, much to the relief of Neal Wilkins, PR Director for the sponsors.

He said: “We were delighted to get the favourite beat - it means that I still have a job as Victor threatened to give me the sack if favourites kept winning our sponsored races!”

SECOND RACE - VCbet Dahlia Stakes
Placed Quotes

SUMMITVILLE JUST DENIED

Summitville almost made all but was collared by Tarfah close home, going down by a neck to that rival.

James Given, Summitville’s trainer, said: “I was standing 20 yards from the line and she was in front then. The winner has already had a run and that can make a bit of difference.

“She’s run an absolute blinder and I’m happy and proud with that effort. She’ll probably go for the Middleton Stakes at York - she was third in that last year when the ground was a bit grotty. If the ground is sticky, she hates it and Darryll [Holland, jockey] said the ground was perfect today.

“We’ll take a look at the European pattern and base her schedule around that. She’s a well-balanced filly and we’ll think about America where the bends will not be an issue - she handled Epsom well enough.

“There’s probably some fillies only races there which might be perfect on firm ground with good prize money.

“We’ll look at the American Oaks, I’m not sure if older fillies can run in that, and other nice races.”
Holland added: “She ran her heart out and I thought that she was just going to hold on - she’ll win some nice races.”

William Jarvis, trainer of third-placed La Persiana, a further half a length adrift, commented: “She’s run her heart out.”

Race Three: UltimatePoker.com Jockey Club Stakes
Win Quotes:

ALKAASED REWARDS FAVOURITE BACKERS

Luca Cumani’s Alkaased justified 2/1 favouritism by one and a half lengths from Gamut. The runner-up is trained by Sir Michael Stoute, who had salt rubbed into his wounds as he previously looked after the winner up to 2003.

Cumani said: “He is a really nice horse and has done nothing but improve with age.

“What I really liked about today’s race was that he travelled so well - he was the last horse off the bridle and when Jimmy [Fortune, winning rider] sent him on, he responded well and went clear.

“As this was his first race of the season, it was a good effort.

“Subject to talks with the owners, he’ll go for the Coronation Cup at Epsom. He likes fast ground and he is a well-balanced horse so Epsom should be fine.

“I didn’t have him as a three-year-old, he had another owner [Hamdan Al Maktoum] and another trainer, and this is only his fifth race for me so I don’t really know about soft ground because he’s not encountered it for me.”

Race Three: UltimatePoker.com Jockey Club Stakes
Placed Quotes:

WARRSAN STILL ON COURSE FOR EPSOM

Veteran Warrsan, though only fourth of five behind Alkaased in the Group Two UltimatePoker.com Jockey Club Stakes, remains on course for attempting a historic third consecutive Vodafone Coronation Cup success at Epsom next month.

Clive Brittain, who trains Warrsan, said:”I am delighted with that. His racing weight was spot on, but there was always the risk that he might not be mentally tuned up and, having come to win his race, he has just blown up.

“It was the first long holiday that he had, and, though it did him the power of good, it meant he was not as forward as in the past. However, that will put him spot on for Epsom.”

Gamut, trying to repeat his win in the race 12 months ago, found the ground too fast, though he just held second place from Bandari in a photo-finish.

Mark Johnston, who trains Bandari, said: “He kept plugging away and showed that the engine is still there. Hopefully, there will be a big one in him this season, and the main midsummer target is the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot at York.”

FIFTH RACE - PETER BURNETT PRETTY POLLY STAKES
WINNER’S QUOTES

FASHIONABLE LOOKS SMART

“That could be an expensive race,” said Teddy Beckett, racing manager to owner Khalid Abdulla, after Fashionable had won the Peter Burnett Pretty Polly Stakes by one and a quarter lengths from Hallowed Dream. She is unbeaten in two races now.

He was referring to the £20,000 it will cost if connections decide to supplement the three-year-old for the Vodafone Oaks at Epsom in June.

He continued: “We are a long way from being decided - she’s by Nashwan and the dam [Fine Detail] stayed so she should stay the mile and a half in the Oaks.”

Trainer Barry Hills added: “It’s a bit early for a decision - it’s a long way between now and the Oaks and there are other races like the Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot at York.

“She’s a very nice filly and she has done it well. We rode her differently today and switched her off and she didn’t really know what to do.

“She has a chance of going to the top - she’s alright and I’m quite sure that she is up to it.

“The Musidora Stakes at York is a bit quick - if she did run in that, I wouldn’t think that she’ll be supplemented for the Oaks. She would then probably have a mid-season campaign with races like the Yorkshire Oaks and Ribblesdale Stakes in mind.

“She would be a valuable filly whether she won the Vodafone Oaks or the Ribblesdale Stakes - she would go for the same price if she went through the ring.

“Alumni will run in the Cheshire Oaks if the ground is soft, I don’t know about Rainbow Sky.”

SIXTH RACE - WYCK HALL STUD MAIDEN STAKES
WINNER’S QUOTES

LEAGUE CHAMPION TOP OF TABLE

League Champion made an impressive winning bow when beating Northern Empire by a head, with the 13/8 favourite George Washington in third.

John Ferguson, representing owner Sheikh Rashid Bin Mohammed, said: “This horse was bred in Kentucky by Sheikh Rashid who owns the mare [Meiosis].

“We are certainly delighted - he looked a brave enough horse and for his first race that was a nice performance.”

Aidan O’Brien, trainer of George Washington, a length and a quarter further back, said: “I am delighted and that was a beautiful run. He is a lovely horse in the making.

“A furlong out a horse jinked in front of him and he was lucky not to come down. That will do him good and we’ll try and win a maiden before something better.”

Race Seven: Rowley Mile Handicap
Winner’s Quotes:

HIGH ACTION STUNS PUNTERS

Most punters caught a cold when High Action sprang a 20/1 shock in the Rowley Mile Handicap.

The versatile High Action, who was winning his sixth race on the Flat, having also scored over hurdles, got the better of a drawn-out battle up the hill with Mocca and Ringsider under a determined ride from 3lb claiming apprentice David Nolan.

Fabrice Smeulders, travelling head lad to winning trainer Ian Williams, said: “That was a pleasant surprise. David gave him a very good ride, and the horse had no trouble with the fast ground.”

Race Eight: Wild Beef Winning Way Handicap
Winner’s Quotes:

BOOKIES FINISH ON A HIGH

Punters had not even been able to digest the 20/1 success of High Action when they were dealt another blow in the final race of the meeting, the Wild Beef Winning Way Handicap, with the bookies celebrating the success of Dovedon Hero, also returned 20-1.

Dovedon Hero battled on bravely to beat Masked by three parts of a length, earning local trainer Charlie McBride a side of fillet beef from the sponsors.

However, drama followed when Dovedon Hero collapsed in the winner’s enclosure. Winning jockey Seb Sanders was quick to fetch a bucket of water and, though the screens went up, the five-year-old, who was suffering from de-hydration, eventually struggled to his feet to tumultuous applause from the shirt-sleeved crowd.

McBride, who spent his formative years with Bruce Hobbs at Palace House Stables in the town, was still attending to Dovedon Hero in the racecourse boxes when the wind was taken out of his sails by an announcement that Eddie Ahern, who rode runner-up Masked, had lodged an objection, claiming that interference had taken place in the final furlong and that Sanders “had made a manoeuvre that cost my horse the race.”

The stewards agreed that interference did take place, and, while they deemed that it had not affected the result, they suspended Sanders for three days (May 16-18). This was the jockey’s second ban of the day as he had already picked up a three-day “holiday” for his riding of second-race winner Tarfah.

MASKED SECOND

Masked came home three-quarters of a length adrift of Dovedon Hero and his connections then lodged an objection which was overruled by the stewards.

John Hills, trainer of Masked, said: “No one likes to object but we felt that the winner came and gave us a pretty hefty bump and knocked us on to another horse on the outside.

“If you are knocked sideways and reorganise and only get beaten half a length, there is enough reason there to object.

“Under the circumstances, we decided to go ahead.”

GROUND UNCHANGED

One millimetre of rain fell overnight at Newmarket, to the relief of clerk of the course Michael Prosser, who had watered the track after racing yesterday evening, following day one of the UltimatePoker.com Guineas Festival.

Prosser said: “We put three millimetres on between the five-furlong and the winning line and between the mile and a half and mile and six furlong starts, which were the areas drying out most significantly.

“The going stick is actually going in lower than yesterday - 10.3 as against 10.6 - but we are still

GOOD TO FIRM - FIRM in places.

“The little bit of rain that we did get fell in a thunderstorm between 3.30am and 5am, but at nearby Huntingdon they had nine millimetres and, having watered, I am glad that we did not have that much.

“The forecast for today is warm, with temperatures getting up to 22 degrees and, though there is an outside chance of a thunderstorm, the probability is that it may not arrive until after racing.”
