MORE THRILLING RACING AT SALISBURY

Salisbury Racecourse hosts its second fixture of 2003 on Thursday, May 15, following on from the very successful start at the Wiltshire track on Sunday, May 4.

A Sunday crowd of 9,000 flocked to the racecourse, enjoying lovely sunny weather and six out of seven winning favourites.

The feature contest on Thursday, May 15, is the £15,000-added PORTWAY & INDESIT FILLIES' RATED HANDICAP (3.55pm) over a mile and a half. This is a new contest for fillies and mares aged four and older rated 0-95.

The opening event at 2.20pm is the £8,000-added WEST BERKSHIRE RACING CLUB MAIDEN FILLIES' STAKES over a mile and a quarter which has attracted so many entries over the last four years that it has divided into two contests, creating an extra event in the process. If this happened again in 2003, the extra event is likely start at 1.50pm.

In 2002 division one went to the Henry Cecil-trained Succinct, who made all to readily defeat Lookalike by five lengths. This wide-margin victory proved to be no fluke as the filly justified favouritism in a Listed event at Newbury on her next start.

The race programme finishes at 5.05pm with the £8,000-added TRYON HANDICAP over seven furlongs. Last season this race was won by Eurolink Zante, trained by Tim McCarthy, who belied his odds of 16/1 to respond well to jockey Eddie Ahern's urgings, beating Uhoomagoo half a length in a tremendous finish.

The £6,750-added KNIGHTS & CO MAIDEN STAKES (2.50pm) is a five-furlong contest for two-year-old maidens. The Richard Hannon-trained One Last Time made a winning racecourse bow last year and subsequently came second to Revenue in the Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot.

In 2001 this juvenile event was won by Doc Holiday, trained by Brian Meehan, who later finished third to Johannesburg - the top two-year-old in the world that year - in the Group One Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket. He then fetched 135,000 guineas to race in the USA.

The fixture's other two races are the £5,250-added DUTTON GREGORY HANDICAP (3.20pm) over six furlongs and the £5,250-added STEVE & MANDIE YALLOP 10th WEDDING ANNIVERSARY CLAIMING STAKES (4.30pm) over a furlong further.

The latter contest in 2002 was won by the Kevin Ryan-trained Platinum Duke, who went on to win three more races that year.

Jeremy Martin, Salisbury's Clerk of the Course and Racecourse Manager, said: "The first fixture of our new season was a resounding success and we are looking forward to racing again on Thursday, May 15."

Admission prices on May 15 are Members £16, Tattersalls £10, Course £5, and, as at all Salisbury's meetings, accompanied children under 16 are admitted FREE. Car parking is also FREE.

Salisbury Racecourse also has an Arabian horse fixture on the evening of Friday, May 16, with the first of six races due off at 6pm and admission costing £10.

LADIES NIGHT BRINGS WINCANTON'S GREAT SEASON TO A CLOSE

Wincanton Racecourse 's 2002-3 season comes to a close on Thursday, May 15, with BLACKMORE VALE LADIES NIGHT. This fixture is a new addition to the Wincanton programme and is the second evening fixture of the year, following on from tomorrow's (Friday, May 9 which has attracted 58 runners with The Wurzels playing live).

Thursday evening, May 15, is sure to be popular, with racegoers enjoying the six races and the other activities in a relaxed and convivial atmosphere.

The two features races of the evening are the £8,000-added BLACKMORE PRINTERS NOVICES' CHASE (6.30pm) over three miles, one and a half furlongs and the £6,000-added BLACKMORE VALE MAGAZINE SILVER JUBILEE NOVICES' HANDICAP CHASE (7.30pm) over two miles.

They are being backed by the Blackmore Vale Publishers, who produce a number of publications in the Wincanton area including the popular Blackmore Vale magazine, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year and also the Fosse Way magazine.

Both races are run for the first time this year but one trainer almost certain to have runners is Paul Nicholls who trains locally at Ditcheat. Nicholls is one of Britain's top jump trainers and has his team of horses in great form.

The racing action gets under way at 6pm with the MARCHANT HOLIDAY SCHOOL NATIONAL HUNT' NOVICES' HURDLE over two miles, running through to the HOLBROOK HOUSE HOTEL HANDICAP HURDLE (8.30pm) over two miles, supported by regular Wincanton sponsor Holbrook House which will also be providing a prize of a night for two at the luxurious spa hotel for the best dressed female racegoer.

Some of the top point-to-pointers from the South West region should be present in the fifth race of the evening, the WINCANTON WEST COUNTRY HUNTERS' CHASE CHAMPIONSHIP (8.00pm) over three miles, one and a half furlongs. This contest is restricted to horses that have finished in the first three in a point-to-point race before May 10 this year and in 2002 was won by Charlie Strong, trained near Plymouth by Richard Kelvin-Hughes.

The remaining race on the card is MEDIA HOLIDAYS SERVICES NATIONAL HUNT NOVICES HANDICAP HURDLE (7.00pm) over two miles and six furlongs.

Stephen Higgins, Racecourse Manager at Wincanton, commented: "The evening fixture on Thursday, May 15, offers an ideal opportunity for racegoers to enjoy some excellent racing.

"This season has been one of the most successful in Wincanton's history. See More Business' victory in the Country Gentlemen's Association Chase and Rhinestone Cowboy's decisive win in the Axminster Kingwell Hurdle stand out as the highlights."

Admission prices on May 15 are Club Enclosure £15 (17-25s with ID£9), Tattersalls Enclosure £10 (students &17-25s with ID £8), Course Enclosure £6 and cars parked in the Course Enclosure £6. Other parking is FREE. Children aged 16 and under, accompanied by a responsible adult, gain FREE admission to all enclosures. The gates open at 4pm.

There will be lots on offer on Ladies Night including a competition for the best-dressed female racegoer and a fashion show put on by the Wincanton boutique, Preview. After the May 15 fixture, Wincanton will next race on Thursday, October 9.
