YORK'S MAY FESTIVAL SET TO ATTRACT THE BEST

With the official opening of the spectacular £20 million Ebor Stand, record prize money of £783,000 and a new chief executive and clerk of the course in William Derby, York's traditional, quality start to the 2003 campaign on the Knavesmire, the three-day May Festival on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (13, 14 & 15 May) promises to be bigger and better than ever, keeping York at the forefront of British racing.

There are seven races each day, starting at 1.30 p.m.

Lord Halifax, chairman of the York Race Committee will perform the opening ceremony of the Ebor Stand prior to racing on Tuesday. Designed with spectators in mind, the building consolidates the formula of the Knavesmire Stand, opened in 1996, in providing first-class viewing and catering facilities for County Stand racegoers, with private areas for sponsors and hospitality guests. Offering views of the home straight and winning post, the Ebor Stand contains 1,000 seats and viewing areas for standing spectators. Its features include six public bars, an 80-seat bistro, three buffet bars, a 350-seat restaurant, six private boxes and a sponsors' suite. Using twenty-first century technology, the stand also contains plasma screens, six fast lifts and an escalator, as well as seven terraces, floor-to-ceiling glass walls and free-standing balconies.

The action on the track will simply ooze quality, as the best of British and European bloodstock seek to both confirm and establish their credentials for the 2003 season, providing a star-studded start to York's eagerly-awaited season.

Tuesday's programme contains a pair of Group races, with The Duke Of York Hearthstead Homes Stakes joining the traditional opening day highlight, The Tattersalls Musidora Stakes. Indeed, The Duke Of York Hearthstead Homes Stakes – a £100,000 contest for leading sprinters over six furlongs – has been elevated to Group 2 status and acquired a new sponsor in the form of regular York supporters Leeds-based national housebuilders, Hearthstead Homes.

Formerly held on the Thursday of the meeting, The Duke Of York Stakes was won last year by Invincible Spirit, who went on to land a Group 1 race at Haydock Park.

The Tattersalls Musidora Stakes should be a fascinating trial for the Fillies' Classic, The Oaks. Sponsored for the 18th year by Tattersalls – Europe's leading bloodstock auctioneers – this Group 3 contest produced a top-class winner last year in Islington, who returned to York in August to land the Group 1 Aston Upthorpe Yorkshire Oaks, prior to being placed in The Breeder's Cup Filly & Mare Turf at Arlington Park, Chicago.

The Showcase Handicap on Tuesday is once again The williamhillcasino.com Stakes, a race for three-year-olds over seven furlongs, while the same age group take part in the opening race, The Newton Investment Management Rated Stakes. The Simon Storage Handicap Stakes, The E.B.F. Novice Fillies' Stakes and The ripleycollection.com Racing Jewellery Maiden Stakes also take place on Tuesday.

The Tote, British Racing's biggest commercial sponsor, support Wednesday's principal race, The Dante Stakes for the first time. With record prize money of £145,000, The Tote Dante Stakes continues to be the most valuable of the U.K.'s Derby trials. Last season's renewal of this famous Group 2 race went to Moon Ballad, who has proved to be a colt of the highest calibre, winning the richest race in the world, the 2003 Dubai World Cup in March. The Yorkshire-trained Bollin Eric, second to Moon Ballad in last season's Dante Stakes, went on to Classic glory in The St. Leger Stakes at Doncaster.

The tote.co.uk Middleton Stakes and The Bank of Scotland Business Banking Hambleton Rated Stakes are two Listed races on Wednesday; the latter contest is also the afternoon's Showcase Handicap.

Emirates Airline upgrade their sponsorship at York to support Thursday's highlight, the Yorkshire Cup, which is also Group 2 status, and offers increased prize money to £140,000. A classy race for stayers, The Emirates Airline Yorkshire Cup may well include last year's winner, Zindabad, trained in North Yorkshire by Mark Johnston, who landed The Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot, while the runner-up, Boreas returned to York to win The Weatherbys Insurance Lonsdale Stakes at York, along with The GNER Doncaster Cup.

The Michael Seely Memorial Glasgow Stakes, a Listed race, could well attract possible Derby contenders, while the opening race on Thursday is a Showcase Handicap for sprinters sponsored for the second year by Langleys Solicitors of York. Leading betting exchange company, Betfair.com renew their association with the course by supporting a middle distance Rated Stakes Handicap, while Black Cat Fireworks and Paramount Hotels join York's growing portfolio of race sponsors by sponsoring races on the final day of the Festival.

The leading Trainer of the season competition at York (won last year by Mark Johnston with seven winners), continues to be supported by Minster Jaguar, while the riders willcompete in the Top Jockey competition – won in dramatic style last season by the champion rider, Kieren Fallon, who rode a hat-trick of winners on the final day of the campaign in October.

The popular ‘Punters Panel' is back on the winners' podium prior to racing over the three days to preview the action, while two giant screens will ensure that racegoers see even more of the action on the track.

Among the other physical upgrades for the new season are the complete refurbishing of the Moet & Chandon Pavilion, adjoining the parade ring. In addition, a full cash betting office has been installed beneath the Melrose Stand.

Other changes include: the pre-parade ring has been returned to its original home in the northern corner of the course; the pre-parade and parade rings have been resurfaced, using the latest rubber blocking material; four new horse showers have been installed; extensive drainage works have been undertaken; and the running rail has been extended across the Knavesmire to the 12-furlong start, improving the safety and welfare of horses and people.

Chief executive and clerk of the course William Derby said: "In addition to major capital projects, such as the Ebor Stand, we have a programme of continuous improvements for other facilities at the course. We believe there is no finer experience in British racing than a day at York and these upgrades will ensure this state-of-affairs is maintained in 2003."

Less tangible changes for the new season include the introduction of an online ticket booking system, accessible through the course's relaunched internet site, yorkracecourse.co.uk. Known as RABITS (Racecourse Advanced Booking Information Ticketing System), it is a browser-based facility using the latest technology and web design techniques.

On and off the track, York continues to set the pace in British racing.

SATURDAY NIGHT RACING AT THIRSK

Racing at Thirsk on Saturday evening (10 May), begins at 6.10 p.m. with The Calverts Carpets Claiming Stakes - a race for two-year-olds over the minimum distance of five furlongs.

The feature race of the evening, The Sky Bet Handicap Stakes, is a £14,000 added contest for stayers over two miles sponsored by Sky Bet, one of the largest horseracing and sports betting companies in the U.K.

The evening's programme includes a race held in memory of a former leading North Yorkshire-based trainer - Dick Peacock - who enjoyed considerable success at Thirsk, while The Army Benevolent Fund Maiden Guaranteed Sweepstakes over six furlongs, draws attention to the fund which provides help to serving and former soldiers and their families in need of financial assistance.

The evening's final race at 8.40 p.m. is The Racing Post Maiden Stakes over one mile, a race sponsored by the Racing Post who will distribute a selection of Racing Post merchandise to racegoers as they arrive.

There's a selection of children's attractions including kiddies rides and a clown in the Family Enclosure, while a Carribean-style band provides the musical entertainment during the evening.

SPRINTERS TO THE FORE AT BEVERLEY

The first of Beverley's three Saturday afternoon meetings this summer takes place this weekend (Saturday, 10 May), when the seven-race programme is supported by Coachman Caravans of Hull.

It's the third year Coachman Caravans have sponsored on the Westwood, with the feature races being for sprinters over the minimum distance of five furlongs – The Coachman Caravans Conditions Stakes (with prize money of £20,000) – and The Leisure Furnishings Sprint (a £12,000 Rated Handicap contest).

Racing on Saturday begins at 2.00 p.m. The giant ToteVision Screen, situated opposite the main stands, will enable racegoers to follow the action even more closely, while musical entertainment is provided by the Chris White Jazz Trio.

Racegoers will also receive a free ‘scratch card' in all enclosures, with prizes such as Tote betting vouchers and badges for future Beverley meetings on offer.
