SAGITTA GUINEAS FESTIVAL 2003
RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE
NEWMARKET, SATURDAY, MAY 3
BEST CROWD FOR THREE YEARS
There was at an attendance of 18,037 at Newmarket today, the best Sagitta 2000 Guineas crowd for three years and an increase of 8.5% on last year’s figure of 16,615.
Lisa Hancock, Newmarket’s Managing Director, said: “It’s been the best Guineas crowd for three years and the racecourse improvements have worked extremely well with such a good crowd.
“We saw a great winner in Refuse To Bend, who is going on to Epsom which is just what a Guineas winner should do.”
FOURTH RACE WINNING QUOTES
THE SAGITTA 2000 GUINEAS
BEND REFUSES TO GIVE IN
The Dermot Weld-trained Refuse To Bend maintained his unbeaten record with an impressive three-quarter length triumph in the Sagitta 2000 Guineas at Newmarket, giving jockey Pat Smullen and owner Walter Haefner of Moyglare Stud Farms a first British classic victory.
“He’s a very decent colt and performed the way we hoped he would,” said Weld. “He worked very sweetly on Tuesday morning, the ease in the ground and everything came his way. I didn’t want to run him on very firm ground and waited to look at the make-up of the race before we committed him.
“Mr Haefner has been a loyal and great supporter of mine for 25 years and it was for him that I wanted to win. He’s has supported me as his only trainer in Ireland for many years.
“Whenever you win a Group 1 it’s a great day and this is a very special day. He’s a lovely horse - he’s unbeaten and a high-class miler. He doesn’t show an awful lot at home but he’s a beautifully-balanced horse out of a very good mare.”
Refuse To Bend is now as short as 5/2 favourite with the Tote for the Vodafone Derby and Weld added: “I have to speak to Mr Haefner and (stud manager) Stan Cosgrove but the Epsom Derby is a definite possibility.
“It’s so competitive these days with the strength of Coolmore and Godolphin so you’ve got to perform at your best. You have to raise your own standards and the last couple of years have been my best ever. I have to pick my targets very carefully, aim, fire and get out again. By some standards my yard is very small.
“I have developed another great rider to follow on from Mick Kinane and Pat is leading rider this season so I said to him ‘you’re a champion, go out and ride like a champion’ and he did.
“The ground is a credit to Newmarket, they called it correctly all week. The track is in superb order and our filly was second in the previous race from the same draw which gave us confidence.”
Pat Smullen added: “I would ideally have loved to got a bit of cover but I had to do it the hard way. When I met the rising ground, there was only one winner.
“I assume Epsom is the plan and I think he’ll get a mile and a half, he’s a very laid-back horse, the type of horse you need to go on to big things.”
An emotional Stan Cosgrove, long-term stud and racing manager for the Swiss-based billionaire Walter Haefner, was thrilled with the victory.
“I’m very very pleased but unfortunately Mr Haefner was travelling so didn’t hear the race. Mr Haefner thought we should wait for the Derby but I’m pleased we decided to come here,” said Cosgrove.
“We bought her grand-dam and the dam, Market Slide, is by Gulch. Willie Carson rode her over five furlongs when she nearly ran away with him.
“Refuse To Bend is a half-brother to (the 2002 Melbourne Cup winner) Media Puzzle and we have a lovely two-year-old full-sister with Dermot. The mare has a foal by Danehill and she was checked in foal to Sadler’s Wells today.”
INITIAL GUINEAS QUOTES
Refuse To Bend maintained his unbeaten record when winning the first British classic of 2003, the Sagitta 2000 Guineas, from 19 others at Newmarket yesterday.
Drawn 18, the Sadler’s Wells colt chased the leaders towards the outside before making progress to hit the front inside the final furlong to win by three quarters of a length from outsiders Zafeen and Norse Dancer.
Pat Smullen, the winning rider who was having his first Sagitta 2000 Guineas success, said: “That was absolutely brilliant - we have always held this horse in high regard. He is a very exciting colt. It was a little bit of a hard call whether to keep the Derby route or come here.
“But he worked so well on Tuesday morning that we had to come - he showed so much pace.
“It was very important that the rain came - there is no doubt that the horse needs a little bit of juice in the ground. Thank God we got it. My father hasn’t been feeling very well but hopefully this will give a great boost.”
Dermot Weld, Refuse To Bend’s trainer, commented: “He is a very well named horse. He ran a super race and got a great ride from Pat Smullen - he did it like a professional racehorse.
“I was pleased with his work on Tuesday morning and the ground had come right for him. The ground is an absolute credit to Newmarket - they called it correct all week and the track was much better than for the Craven Meeting.
“His blood was right, he scoped good and he worked super. This is a special day because nowadays with the strength of Godolphin and Ballydoyle my team is by some standards is very small compared to theirs.
“When you have a good horse like Refuse To Bend, you have to capitalise on it. I am so pleased for Walter Haefner, such a loyal owner. He is a wonderful man to train for - he has been 25 years with me.
“I will speak to Stan Cosgrove and make a decision about his future - I have to say that the Epsom Derby is a very distinct possibility.”
PLACED QUOTES RACE FOUR
SAGITTA 2000 GUINEAS
HE MIGHT HAVE BEEN CLOSER
“Steve (Drowne) said that with a bit better luck he would have been closer, but he did not say he would have won and I am not making any excuses,” said Mick Channon after Zafeen had finished three-quarters of a length runner-up to Refuse To Bend.
“He was a bit outpaced three furlongs out and Steve was niggling along a bit, but that is the way he is with his very relaxed temperament. What I liked about him was the way he was going on at the end, he was really finishing.
“I think this is his trip and he is in everything. We shall certainly look at the Irish Guineas for him.”
David Elsworth will also think about the Irish classic for third-placed Norse Dancer, though the first race he mentioned for Jeff Smith’s colt was the Dante at York later this month.
“It is frustrating to get so close without managing to win,” he said. “I am not disappointed with the horse, he has run a really great race, and this is not the time to start making decisions about where he will go next.
“He was very much the forgotten horse of the race, but there were reasons for his disappointing runs at the end of last year - the Racing Post Trophy was run in a bog - and it was not inconceivable that he could run a big race, which is precisely what he has done.”
Fulke Johnson Houghton felt that Tout Seul “was just coming to win his race” going down into the Dip. “I thought then that we might get it, but he just got a bit tired up the hill,” he said.
“Steve (Carson) said that because they went no pace he had to make more use of the horse than we would have liked to, but he has really run a great race and I think he can come on a bit from this.
“I don’t think softer ground would make any difference to him, he can really go on anything, and as long as he comes out of this alright he will go for the Irish Guineas. I expect that the winner will be taking the Derby route.”
MORE SAGITTA 2000 GUINEAS QUOTES
Harry Herbert of Highclere Thoroughbred Racing was delighted with Saturn’s fifth, while Audience came 15th. He said: “Saturn ran a blinder - a fantastic race - it is just annoying that we did not have a lead. That was the just the way was run in the end. We might consider the Irish 2,000 Guineas now.
“Audience was quite inexperienced and that affected him early in the race when he lost his position. He then got going only to be quite badly stopped. He is much better than his finishing position suggests and will stay further so we are considering where to go with him.”
Godolphin’s pair of Songlark and Lateen Sails came 10th and 20th respectively. Trainer Saeed bin Suroor commented: “They were disappointing. Songlark I think needs further and Lateen Sails needs more experience and we have to give him confidence again.”
Michael ; Kinane, rider of the 4/1 favourite Hold That Tiger who came 17th, said: “He was a bit disappointing, wasn’t he.”

On his reappearance last month he won a Listed race over a mile at Leopardstown at 4/7 by half a length from Good Day Too. His sire Sadler’s Wells is one of the outstanding stallions in the world and has been at the top of the tree for many years, and his dam, Market Slide, showed useful sprinting form in Ireland and in the USA with her wins including the Scurry Handicap at the Curragh and the First Lady Handicap, a Grade 3 race, at Gulfstream Park. She has also done well at stud and her previous foals include Media Puzzle, who won the Melbourne Cup at Flemington last November for the Weld stable.

Moyglare Stud Farms
Moyglare Stud Farms is owned by Zurich-based nonagenarian Dr Walter Haefner, one of the world’s richest men. Haefner was champion European amateur rider in 1963, made his fortune through the software company Computer Associates International and in 1988 was awarded an honorary doctorate from Trinity College, Dublin, for his services to the bloodstock industry and contribution to education in Ireland.
Moyglare Stud is based on 450 acres at Maynooth in Co Kildare and managed by Stan Cosgrove, himself a noted breeder thanks to the likes of Grandera. Moyglare Stud, which boasts a 50-strong broodmare band, has 60 horses in training with Dermot Weld adjacent to the Curragh in Ireland and a further ten with Christophe Clement in the United States.
Among the many top performers to race for Moyglare Stud have been the Belmont Stakes winner Go And Go, 1996 Irish Oaks heroine Dance Design, 1992 St James’s Palace Stakes victor Brief Truce, 1988 Irish 1,000 Guineas winner Trusted Partner and 1994 National Stakes winner Definite Article. Dermot Weld
Dermot Kenneth Weld was born on July 29, 1948, and is firmly established as one of the world's great trainers. He initially trained as a veterinary surgeon and his training career began by working as an assistant to his father Charlie and also to Tommy Smith in Australia.
He also rode regularly as an amateur in Ireland, winning the title in 1969, 1971 and 1972 and it was in 1972 that Weld began his training career, basing himself at Rosewell House a few hundred yards from the Curragh racecourse.
Since gaining his training licence, Weld has won all of the Irish Classics on at least one occasion - Irish Derby (1996 Zagreb), Irish Oaks (1996 Dance Design, 1981 Blue Wind), Irish 2,000 Guineas (1986 Flash of Steel), Irish 1,000 Guineas (1982 Prince's Polly, 1988 Trusted Partner), Irish St Leger (1993 and 1994 Vintage Crop, 2001 Vinnie Roe, 2002 Vinnie Roe) and he also tasted English Classic success with Blue Wind in the 1981 Epsom Oaks.
But it is as one of the true pioneers in sending horses overseas that Weld is best known. In 1990, Go And Go became the first horse trained outside of North America to win a leg of the American Triple Crown when he was triumphant in the Belmont Stakes. In 2001, Pine Dance took the American Derby at Arlington while last season Dress To Thrill won the Grade One Matriarch Stakes at Hollywood Park.
In addition to his North American successes, Dermot Weld also holds the distinction of being the only European trainer to have won Australia's most famous race - the Melbourne Cup - a race which he has landed twice. Vintage Crop won the Flemington contest in 1993 while his second win came last year with Media Puzzle.
Weld has also had some notable National Hunt successes including the 1989 Irish Grand National with Perris Valley and the 1990 Triumph Hurdle with Rare Holiday.

Pat Smullen
Success aboard Vicosa at Dundalk in June 1993 marked the start of an outstanding riding career for Patrick Joseph Smullen. Born In County Offally on May 22, 1977, Smullen became involved in the Pony Club through a brother who had an interest in horses and then went to work for trainer Tommy Lacey. It was Lacey who suggested to Smullen that he ride for trainer Ewan Charpy in Dubai over the winter in 1997 and he has become one of the leading riders in the Middle East. Smullen had a first Group 1 win when the Tommy Stack-trained Tarascon won the 1997 Moyglare Stud Stakes and he became stable jockey to Dermot Weld in 1999 following Mick Kinane’s departure to Aidan O’Brien’s stable. Smullen, who is married to the leading Irish National Hunt trainer (and Aidan O’Brien’s sister-in- law) Frances Crowley, was Ireland’s champion jockey in 2001 with 81 wins although was only third last year to Kinane and Johnny Murtagh with 60 successes. His major wins include last year’s National Stakes on Refuse To Bend, the Irish St Leger for the past two years on Vinnie Roe, the 2002 Matron Stakes with Dress To Thrill and last year’s Ribblesdale Stakes with Irresistible Jewel.
Sagitta 2,000 Guineas winners - 2003 REFUSE TO BEND
GOING NEWS AT 10 AM
The going for the second day of the Sagitta Guineas Festival remains
GOOD TO SOFT.
“We had 7.5millimetres of rain yesterday, including some squally showers after racing, but luckily we missed the majority of the rain,” said clerk of the course Michael Prosser.
“The forecast for today is for a dry and bright day with temperatures of 16/17 degrees (62/64 F) and a blustery breeze which should help to dry the ground.
“The going will start on the slow side of good, but I expect the course to dry steadily all through the afternoon and it may almost be good by the end of the day.
“The forecast for tomorrow is for another dry and bright day with the temperature getting up to 20 degrees.”
GROUND NOW GOOD
After a dry and windy morning the going at Newmarket has been changed to
GOOD
from Good to Soft following the first race.
Pat Eddery, rider of the first winner today, commented: “The ground is perfect. It has dried out a lot since yesterday when it was riding soft.
“Mister Links (his Sagitta 2000 Guineas runner) ran well but needed his race at Newbury badly, has come out of it well and worked really good this week. He is not a 66/1 shot.”

THE SAGITTA 2000 GUINEAS - Facts and Figures
* The race was first run in 1809 and won by Wizard. His connections - trainer T Perren, owner Christopher Wilson and jockey Bill Clift - were also responsible for the first 1000 Guineas winner, Charlotte in 1814.
* The mile contest, run on Newmarket’s Rowley Mile course, is for three-year-old colts and fillies. Few fillies, who carry 5lb less than colts, run in the 2000 Guineas and seven have been successful - Pastille (1822), Crucifix (1840), Formosa (dead-heat with the colt Moslem in 1868), Pilgrimage (1878), Shotover (1882), Sceptre (1902) and Garden Path (1944).
* The largest field was in 1930 when there were 28 runners in the race won by Diolite while 27 ran in 2000. In both 1829 and 1830 there were just two competitors, with both winners - Patron and Augustus - owned by Lord Exeter and trained by C Marson. The maximum field allowed for safety reasons is currently 30.
* Since 1900 the longest winning distance was recorded in 1947 by Tudor Minstrel, who came away an easy eight-length winner. During the same period the contest has been won by the smallest margin (a short-head) a dozen times - Neil Gow (1910), Kennymore (1914), Adam’s Apple (1927), Pay Up (1936), Kingsway (1943), Nimbus (1949), Palestine (1950), Only For Life (1963), Kashmir II (1966), Royal Palace (1967), Mister Baileys (1994) and, most recently, Mark Of Esteem (1996).
* The longest-priced winner in the history of the race was 1961 hero Rockavon, who was returned at 66/1. Not quite so generous were the odds of 12/100 laid on St Frusquin in 1896 - the shortest-priced winner.
* In the 193 runnings to date a total of 78 favourites or joint-favourites have obliged - a healthy 40.4% of winners have headed the betting market. Favourite backers have not had such a good time over the last 13 years with just one market leader, Zafonic at 5/6 in 1993, obliging.
* Irish-trained horses have won nine renewals since 1900. The first was 1960 winner Martial, trained by Paddy Prendergast, and he has been followed by Sir Ivor (1968 Vincent O’Brien), Nijinsky (1970 Vincent O’Brien), Nebbiolo (1977 Kevin Prendergast), Lomond (1983 Vincent O’Brien), El Gran Senor (1984 Vincent O’Brien), King Of Kings (1998 Aidan O’Brien), Rock Of Gibraltar (2002 Aidan O’Brien) and Refuse To Bend (2003 Dermot Weld).
* Since 1900 there have been 11 winners trained in France. They are 1933 Rodosto (trained by Harry Count), 1937 Le Ksar (F Carter), 1940 Djebel (A Swann), 1952 Thunderhead II (Etienne Pollett), 1959 Taboun (Alec Head), 1964 Baldric II (Ernie Fellows), 1966 Kashmir II (Charles Bartholomew), 1974 Nonoalco (Francois Boutin), 1982 Zino (Francois Boutin), 1994 Zafonic (Andre Fabre) and 1995 Pennekamp (Andre Fabre).
* The first horse to complete the 2000 Guineas/Epsom Derby double was Smolensko, owned by Sir Charles Bunbury, in 1813. Since then a further 33 horses have completed this double, the most recent being Nashwan in 1989.
* Sir Michael Stoute, responsible for the 2001 Sagitta 2000 Guineas winner Golan, is the most successful current trainer with five victories. His other four winners were Shadeed (1985), Doyoun (1988), Entrepreneur (1997) and King’s Best (2000). Richard Hannon has saddled three winners - Mon Fils (1973), Don’t Forget Me (1987) and Tirol (1990).
* The most successful current jockeys are Mick Kinane and Pat Eddery with three wins apiece. Kinane gained his most recent win in 1998 on the Aidan O’Brien-trained King Of Kings, and also scored on Entrepreneur the previous season and Tirol in 1990. Eddery’s trio are Lomond (1983), El Gran Senor (1984) and the French-trained Zafonic (1993). Kieren Fallon will be hoping to join them this year, having ridden the winner for two of the last three years while Frankie Dettori has also had a couple of successes.
* The record time is 1m 35.08s, set by Mister Baileys in 1994.
WINNING QUOTES RACE ONE
COUNTRYWIDE STEEL & TUBES HANDICAP
WRONG TACTICS WORK OUT WELL
“He is supposed to be at his best coming from the back in a fast run race, so that could not apparently have been worse for him,” said John Dunlop after Persian Lightning, one of his three runners in the race, had taken the opening Countrywide Steel & Tubes Handicap.
“But there was clearly going to be no pace on, so Pat (Eddery) very much did the right thing by making the running (after a couple of furlongs). There was no point in trying to hold the horse up and fighting him.
“Pat really is the ultimate professional, he just gets better with time and as he gets older.”
Dunlop has no immediate plans for the winner, but races like the Sandringham and Duke of Edinburgh Handicaps at Royal Ascot and the Old Newton Cup at Haydock could be the sort of races he has in mind.
Dave Morris, who trains runner-up Athenian, said: “he was put up 6lb for coming second last time when the winner went up by 8lb and it doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. He was 2lb out of the handicap today and we’ll have to see what the handicapper does now. I had wanted to go for the John Smith’s Cup at York this year - those races are better to go for than Group races, in my opinion.”
GOING NOW GOOD
The official going was changed to GOOD after this race.
SECOND RACE WINNING QUOTES
THE VICTOR CHANDLER PALACE HOUSE STAKES (GROUP 3)
BLADE CUTS DOWN RIVALS
The Bryan McMahon-trained Needwood Blade justified 9/4 favouritism to land the Group 3 Victor Chandler Palace House Stakes by a length from the fast-finishing Bahamian Pirate.
McMahon, who also won the race in 1998 with Yorkies Boy, said: “Needwood Blade’s never won over five furlongs before but with the rain coming it made it that bit easier.
“Seb (Sanders) said that he had to chivy the horse along halfway because they went so fast. He’s a quick horse but just needs winding up.
“He’s in the Temple Stakes then if it’s wet he’d go for the five-furlong King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot but if it’s dry he’d go for the six-furlong Golden Jubilee Stakes on the Saturday.”
Like last year’s Victor Chandler Palace House Stakes winner Kyllachy, Needwood Blade is a son of local stallion Pivotal and both horses came from Doncaster’s St Leger Yearling Sale, in Needwood Blade’s case he was bought by McMahon for just 9,800gns.
PLACED QUOTES RACE TWO
VICTOR CHANDLER PALACE HOUSE STAKES
PLACED HORSES WILL MEET AGAIN
“They just went so very fast and he could not lay up with them in the early stages,” said Dandy Nicholls after Bahamian Pirate had finished very strongly to beat all but Needwood Blade.
“But he was beaten by a really good horse and he is such a good yardstick and so consistent that I am delighted with that. He should have won two Group races last year, but he didn’t, and that was his first run since the Abbaye.
“The dry spring has not helped us with him as he likes a bit of cut in the ground, and now he will go for the Duke of York Stakes at York the week after next.”
That race was also nominated by Nick Littmoden for third home Smokin Beau. “That was a really good effort as we have had all sorts of problems with him since he ran in the Abernant,” said the trainer. “He was lame after the race and it was only very hard and clever work by our vets that sorted out the problem.
“I was very pleased with that run and he would have done even better if the ground had been drier.”
WINNING QUOTES RACE THREE
LADBROKES HANDICAP
NICHOLLS GOES ONE BETTER
Dandy Nicholls, second with Bahamian Pirate in the Palace House, wasted no time in improving on that when Fire Up The Band beat 29 rivals in the Ladbroke Handicap.
He had told an audience at York earlier in the week that the four-year-old would be a horse to follow this season and he advised the racecourse photographers to “take plenty of pictures of him, he is a very good horse.
“What happens now will depend on the handicapper,” Nicholls added. “We want to go to Goodwood and Ascot with him.”
Though he did not make clear whether that would be for handicaps like the Stewards’ Cup and the Wokingham, or Group races like the King George and the King’s Stand.
Dermot Weld was pleased with the efforts of Perfect Touch to finish second. “It was a good effort on her first run in a handicap,” said the Rosewell House handler.
“She just found one too good today; she was no match for the winner and I think she’ll go for the Wokingham now.”
WINNING QUOTES RACE FIVE
RUINART CHAMPAGNE CONDITIONS STAKES
EDDERY DOUBLES UP
Pat Eddery completed a 47-1 double when Westmoreland Road galloped his rivals into the ground in the Ruinart Champagne Conditions Stakes, beating Calibre by seven lengths.
“I have always liked this horse and I don’t know why people did not fancy him more. He had done nothing wrong in his earlier races and the form of his Newbury race is working out quite well,” said the winner’s trainer Amanda Perrett.
“He has been entered for the King Edward V11 Stakes at Ascot, though obviously it is a bit early to say whether he will go there or not. Because he is so big he was too immature to run much last year, but he ran very well against Tiber at Goodwood in his only two-year-old race.”
Westmoreland Road races in the name of Belinda Bauer and is named after the road in Bromley, Kent, where her family lived and where John Chandler (the colt’s part owner and breeder) lived when he was a veterinary student in this country some years ago.
“John is my father’s cousin,” Miss Bauer related, “and when this colt got cast in his box when he was being flown over from America for the sales here at Newmarket, he decided to put him into training.
“He said that I could be the owner and so here I am.”
SIXTH RACE WINNING QUOTES
THE EUROPEAN METAL RECYCLING MAIDEN STAKES
LINKS MAKES WINNING DEBUT
Lord Links continued the bright start to Daggers Drawn’s stud career when landing the five-furlong European Metal Recycling Maiden Stakes under Richard Hughes.
“He’s not come in his coat but has been working so well that I thought I’d bring him here,” said winning trainer Richard Hannon.
“He’s done some good work and will be better over six or seven furlongs. We’ll just creep there quietly now.”
Lord Links earned a 12/1 quote for the Coventry Stakes with Cashmans with the runner-up Savitsky priced at 14/1 for the Royal Ascot race.
WINNING QUOTES RACE SEVEN
CURRAGH ‘HOME OF THE IRISH CLASSICS’ CONDITIONS STAKES
EDDERY COMPLETES TREBLE
Pat Eddery ended the day as he had begun it -- with a winner, as Carnival Dancer landed the Curragh ‘Home of the Irish Classics’ Conditions Stakes by a length and three-quarters from French challenger Sensible.
This completed a 143-1 treble for the former champion, following his successes on Westmoreland Road and Persian Lightning, and a double for Amanda Perrett, who also trains Westmoreland Road.
Carnival Dancer belongs to the Cheveley Park Stud whose Chris Richardson explained that the horse had a disappointing campaign last year “because he never really got his ground.
“The one time it was really right for him was at Haydock, but then that meeting was abandoned, and at the end of the season Sir Michael (Stoute), who is a director of the company, suggested that it might be an idea to send him to Ireland, where he was likely to have a chance of easier ground.
“But we race in England, not Ireland, and we wanted him to stay here. There did not seem much point in him staying at Newmarket, as a change of scenery seemed a good idea, so we sent him to Amanda.
“She and Mark have worked really hard with this horse and it is all to their credit that he has come back to win.”
