BEVERLEY'S BIG WEDNESDAY EVENING

Leading two-year-olds take centre-stage at Beverley on Wednesday evening (4 June), when the highlights are two of the most prestigious races of the season on the Westwood – The Hilary Needler Trophy and The Brian Yeardley Continental Two-Year-Old Trophy.

Both races – which are contended over five furlongs – now offer record prize money, with The Hilary Needler Trophy, a Listed race for fillies which was first run at Beverley in 1965, having a total prize fund of £25,000. Possible contenders include recent York winner, Birthday Suit (owned and bred by Lady Halifax), recent Thirsk winner, Attraction and Caldy Dancer, successful in a Conditions race at Chester's May Meeting.

Juvenile colts and geldings take part in the £20,000 Brian Yeardley Continental Trophy, a Conditions contest, which like The Hilary Needler Trophy, is a recognised stepping-stone for two-year-old races at Royal Ascot. Both races offer prize money down to sixth place and the owner's nominal entry fee is refunded to those connected with runners in The Brian Yeardley Continental Two-Year-Old Trophy.

Wednesday evening's quality programme, which begins at 6.40 p.m., also includes The Tote Bookmakers Handicap Stakes (extended seven furlongs), while The Weatherbys Insurance Handicap Stakes is contested over the extended mile; both races are for three-year-olds. The later race is supported by Weatherbys Group Ltd. of Wellingborough, which provides administrative and commercial services to the British racing industry.

The giant ToteVision Screen will assist racegoers to see all of the action, while The Hookey Band – an Irish music Band – provide the musical entertainment.
