THE VALUE BETTING COLUMN EVERY SATURDAY
The Curragh, Ireland, Saturday, May 24, 2003
3.45pm 400,000 euros Entenmann's Irish 2,000 Guineas (Group 1) (Entire Colts & Fillies) (3-y-o) 1m.
GOING: YIELDING-SOFT
BP= best odds offered from William Hill, Tote, Ladbrokes and Coral Eurobet.
1) (8)5-24 Abunawwas Kevin Prendergast 3-9-00 D P McDonogh
A winner on soft ground in a Galway maiden last season and ran well on seasonal debut behind Tomahawk in a Listed contest at the Curragh in March. Bit disappointing last time.
BP = 33/1 with all except William Hill
2) (1) -355 Chappel Cresent Gerard Keane 3-9-00 Kevin Darley
Has run well in smart company before and will like the ground, but has something to find on latest form.
BP = 100/1 Ladbrokes
3) (5) 0-15 Desert Destiny David Loder 3-9-00 Frankie Dettori
Won a minor race at Newmarket in impressive fashion earlier this season and came fifth in the French Guineas last time out. Stable still in great form and must be considered but not as this price.
BP = 8/1 Coral Eurobet & Ladbrokes
4) (15) 44-1 Dolmur Tony Mullins 3-9-00 Fran Berry
Has bits and pieces of decent form, especially on soft ground and won a classic trial on soft at Gowran Park last time out, though the first half was run at a crawl. Could run well at big odds.
BP=28/1 all except Coral Eurobet
5) (2) 8-31 Evolving Tactics Dermot Weld 3-9-00 Pat Smullen
Dermot Weld’s challengers always warrant respect but this one just has one maiden win on firm to his name and it looks as if he will be suited by further and faster ground.
BP = 18/1 all except William Hill
6) (9) -414 France Aidan O’Brien IRE 3-9-00b J A Heffernan
Ran well when fourth in the French Guineas last time and should run his race. However, he has been deserted by Michael Kinane and another placing is probably the best he can hope for.
BP = 16/1 Ladbrokes
7) (13) 607- Great Pyramid Aidan O’Brien 3-9-00 Tom Queally
Full-brother to last year’s winner Rock Of Gibraltar but doesn’t look in anything like that class and easily passed over.
BP = 50/1 Ladbrokes & Tote
8) (3) 0-10 Indian Haven Paul D’Arcy 3-9-00 John Egan
Stayed on well to land the Free Handicap at Newmarket on seasonal reappearance and then got no sort of run at all in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket. Maybe worth another chance, but this is plenty short enough.
BP = 13/2 Coral Eurobet and William Hill
9) (6)31-8 Makhlab Barry Hills 3-9-00 Willie Supple
Showed a preference for cut in the ground last season with his three victories included the Group Three Horris Hill Stakes at Newbury. Well beaten on Greenham on reappearance and looks to have to find some improvement to figure here.
BP = 14/1 generally
10) (10) 24-4 Napper Tandy John Bolger 3-9-00 Kevin Manning
Often highly tried last season and ran well for a long way on seasonal debut in the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial. Should be more at home over this trip but still likely to find a few too good.
BP = 20/1 except Ladbrokes
11) (4) 21- Salt Lake City Aidan O’Brien 3-9-00 P Cosgrave
Superbly-bred individual who did very little wrong last season, winning a Leopardstown maiden but the form has not worked out. A bit hard to weigh up and best watched on first outing of the season.
BP = 40/1 Ladbrokes
12) (7) 5-45 Saturn Michael Bell 3-9-00 Johnny Murtagh
Ran well last time when fifth in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket but had the run of the race that day and, on his overall record, could struggle in this company and is no value.
BP = 12/1 Coral Eurobet
13) (11) Solskjar Aidan O’Brien 3-9-00 C O’Donoghue
Unraced Danehill colt. Must be well regarded to start off in this race, but is surely best watched.
BP = 40/1 Tote, William Hill
14) (16) -148 Tomahawk Aidan O’Brien 3-9-00 Michael Kinane
The Ballydoyle first string. Eighth in 2000 Guineas last time, second in a French Group Three and won Listed race at the Curragh earlier in the season. Obviously respected but looks a short price and is held on last season’s form by Tout Seul.
BP = 9/2 Ladbrokes
15) (14) 21-4 Tout Seul Fulke Johnson Houghton 3-9-00 Steve Carson
Last season’s Dewhurst winner who ran well when fourth on his seasonal reappearance in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket. Holds most of these on last year’s excellent form, will prefer the ground here and should go well. Has an excellent chance and is good value each-way.
BP = 9/2 all except Coral Eurobet
16) (12) 4-22 Zafeen Mick Channon 3-9-00 Steve Drowne
Fared the best of these when finishing second to Refuse To Bend in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket after finishing second at Newbury in the Greenham. Clear chance on that form, but has shown his best form on faster ground and is held by Tout Seul on last season’s form.
BP = 5/1 Tote
SUMMARY
It is always best to side with Group One performers in classic races and TOUT SEUL ran admirably without a prep race in the Sagitta 2000 Guineas and is good value each-way.
GOOD LUCK
