21 REMAIN IN VODAFONE OAKS
The leading contenders for the 2003 Vodafone Oaks remain in the June 6 classic after the final forfeit stage on May 22.
Godolphin looks to have a particularly strong hand in the £375,000 race over 12 furlongs and the Maktoum family’s operation will be aiming for a fourth Oaks success following on from Balanchine (1994), Moonshell (1995) and Kazzia (2002).
This year the main Godolphin hope is Hi Dubai, who was second in the Group One Prix Saint-Alary at Longchamp on Sunday and earlier this season won the Listed R L Davison Pretty Polly Stakes at Newmarket. She could be joined by stable companions Mezzo Soprano, runner-up in yesterday’s Listed Caffreys Lupe Stakes at Goodwood, Gonfilia and Lady Catherine, second in the Italian Oaks on Sunday.
Aidan O’Brien has two Vodafone Oaks victories to his name - Shahtoush (1998) and Imagine (2001) - and the Irish handler has a couple of entries still engaged. His main hope is Yesterday, a full-sister to last year’s runner-up Quarter Moon, who is currently disputing favouritism with Hi Dubai. Yesterday was a Listed winner last season and ran a good trial for Epsom when eighth in the Sagitta 1000 Guineas at Newmarket last time out. O’Brien’s other hope is L’Ancresse, runner-up in the Irish 1000 Guineas Trial at Leopardstown before finishing 15th in the Sagitta 1000 Guineas.
There is one further Irish filly going forward, Snippets, who came third in the Listed Cheshire Oaks last time. She is trained by Jim Bolger, who sent out Jet Ski Lady to a shock 50/1 Vodafone Oaks victory in 1991.
Several other of these fillies met in the Sagitta 1000 Guineas at Newmarket on May 4. In that mile classic, Hanami ran a fine Vodafone Oaks trial for trainer James Toller by finishing well to take fifth while Casual Look was sixth, also staying on. Other Newmarket runs still engaged in the Vodafone Oaks are Summitville (seventh), Yesterday (eighth), Gonfilia (12th), Mezzo Soprano (14th) and L’Ancresse (15th).
Sir Michael Stoute has enjoyed Vodafone Oaks success with Fair Salinia (1978) and Unite (1987) and the Newmarket trainer looks keen to add to his tally again this year with three fillies still engaged. They are the Cheshire Oaks second Halawanda, the Listed Swettenham Stud Fillies’ Trial Stakes runner-up Waldmark and Spanish Sun, winner of her only start to date at Kempton Park last season.
The Vodafone Oaks is one of few races to have eluded owner Robert Sangster and he could be represented this year by Ocean Silk, who impressed when taking the Listed Caffreys Lupe Stakes at Goodwood yesterday. Her trainer John Gosden could also be represented by High Praise, victorious in the Group Three Prix des Reservois at Deauville last season.
Heading the remaining entries is Geminiani. Unbeaten on her two starts last season, including in Listed company at Goodwood, where Inchberry was second, she put up a pleasing seasonal debut when second in the Group Three Tattersalls Musidora Stakes at York on May 13.
Ed Dunlop’s Moonsprite won on her seasonal reappearance in a Beverley maiden on Tuesday while the potential field is completed by the outsiders Heart ‘N Minds, Magnificent Bell and Thingmebob.
Stephen Wallis, Managing Director at Epsom Downs Racecourse, commented: “The Vodafone Oaks is the richest race of its kind in Europe. It is a classic race in its own right and has the added attraction this year of being part of the new BHB Summer Triple Crown.”
The Vodafone Oaks’ next confirmation stage is at the five-day stage on May 31 when there is also a £20,000 supplementary entry stage at which Hammiya is set to be added to the field.
The Vodafone Derby, Vodafone Oaks and Vodafone Coronation Cup form part of the first leg of the British Horseracing Board’s exciting new Summer Triple Crown and Grand Slam Series which offers a bonus of £5 million.

GOODWOOD MAY TRIALS MEETING 2003
RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE
THIRD DAY, THURSDAY, MAY 22
LOOKING AHEAD TO LATER IN THE YEAR
Badges are selling fast for the Glorious Goodwood Festival which runs from Tuesday, July 29 through Saturday, August 2, and this year the Saturday of the five-day meeting, which features the Vodafone Stewards’ Cup, is all ticket for the first time. Admission to the Richmond (members’) enclosure has operated on this basis for all five days for some years.
Racegoers are advised to make immediate contact with Goodwood’s ticket office (0800 0188191) to make sure that they obtain the passes they want, and to take advantage of the early booking discount which ends on June 1.
There has also been high demand for tables in the restaurant and reserved seats in the grandstand. Car park spaces have been so sought after that only a few are now available in some car parks.
The social highlight of the week is the unique Race Week Ball at Goodwood House on the Thursday evening which is always a sell-out. It gives the chance to mix with leading celebrities from the Sport of KIngs. This year the ball has a Regency theme and proceeds from the glittering occasion will be donated to Racing Welfare and Future Hope.
Tickets can be obtained from Brenda Hamilton, the Goodwood membership secretary, at the racecourse office on 0800 0188191.
RACING FOR ALL AT GOODWOOD
IN THE MONTHS AHEAD
Goodwood offers racing for all in the coming months when it stages a series of Friday evening meetings, Saturday and Sunday fixtures and the famous Glorious Goodwood meeting (July 29 to August 2), one of the highlights of the sporting calendar.
Advanced bookings for the evening meetings are well ahead of last year, reported Goodwood’s managing director Rod Fabricius, who says: “Everyone is welcome to attend these meetings, but they are particularly popular with the young and people who are looking for relaxation and entertainment at the end of the working week. Our first evening meeting was held in 1985 and they have been developed to the point that we now hold one on every Friday in June.”
Goodwood’s Friday evening fixtures will be held on June 6, 13, 20 and 27.
The first two Sunday fixtures at Goodwood are fun days, when families are made especially welcome and there are lots of entertainments for younger racegoers, with a free gift and a free ice cream for each child. “It’s a totally different audience, with many experiencing racing for the first time, and a great day out, with children under 17 getting in free to all Goodwood meetings,” said Fabricius
Goodwood’s Sunday ‘family fun day’ meetings will be held on June 29 and August 24, while there is another Sunday fixture on October 12.
Those who like music and racing should make a note in their diary for Saturday, August 23, Celebration Mile day, when a free concert by a Blues Brothers tribute band will be held after racing.
GOODWOOD MAY TRIALS MEETING 2003
RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE
THIRD DAY, THURSDAY, MAY 22
THUMBS-UP FROM FABRICIUS
The Goodwood May Trials meeting has been a success, says the racecourse’s managing director, Rod Fabricius - even the weather has been relatively kind given the bad forecast.
Commenting at the start of the final day of the meeting, Fabricius commented: “It’s been another successful May meeting and I’ve been particularly pleased with the number of runners we’ve had at Goodwood this week - it’s made for some very competitive racing!
“I was also very happy with our two trial races [the Letheby & Christopher Predominate Stakes and the Caffreys Lupe Stakes]. They certainly lived up to their Listed status in terms of quality.”
Sussex Stakes closes Wednesday
Owners and trainers are reminded that the Gr.1 Sussex Stakes, one of Europe’s top races and the highlight of the Goodwood calendar, closes next week, on Wednesday, May 28.
First run in 1841, ‘the Sussex’ is worth £285,000 and has been won by some legends of the Turf - Rock of Gibraltar landed the race last year, but who will follow him into the record books on Wednesday, July 30?
A LOOK BACK AT THE FIRST TWO DAYS
Goodwood was always one of the late Dick Hern’s favourite meetings and his successor Marcus Tregoning, who took over at Kingwood House when The Major retired in 1996, has very much followed in his mentor’s footsteps.
By the start of this year he had sent out 16 Goodwood winners and he put two more on to that tally on Tuesday when High Accolade won the Letheby & Christopher Predominate Stakes and Morahib took the Newton Investment Management Handicap.
High Accolade earned many plaudits as he came from last to first to take the Predominate by a length and a half from Unigold, but he was not entered in the Vodafone Derby and the trainer’s immediate post race reaction was that the colt’s owner Lady Tennant would not be paying the £90,000 supplementary fee for Epsom.
But Tregoning left no doubt that he expected more to follow from High Accolade. “Make no mistake, this is a good horse as Richard Hannon told me when he was switched to my yard last year, he stays well and he can quicken and not a lot of horses can do that.” If High Accolade misses the Derby his likely target is the King Edward VII Stakes at Ascot.
It remains possible, though, that runner-up Unigold will take his chance at Epsom, though his trainer Ed Dunlop admits that would be an optimistic move and sees him more as a candidate for the final classic, the St Leger.
Ocean Silk, who carried Robert Sangster’s colours to victory in the Caffreys Lupe Stakes on Wednesday, holds an entry for the Vodafone Oaks, but her trainer John Gosden was not committing her to the classic.
“She wanted every inch of that mile and a quarter and will stay a mile and a half well,” he said, “but she is also in the Ribblesdale (at Royal Ascot) and I shall discuss things with Robert and Jimmy (Fortune, who rode the filly) before we make a decision.”
Ascot is also on the agenda for Mitcham, who defied his seven years when upsetting the long odds on Bahamian Pirate in the M-Real Conditions Stakes on Tuesday. Terry Mills is to decide between the King’s Stand, which Mitcham won four years ago, and the Golden Jubilee (formerly the Cork and Orrery).
There could also be big race plans, like the Eclipse and the Hardwicke, for Princely Venture, who came back in style after cracking a hind leg bone in last year’s Irish Derby, to wear down Mesmeric in Wednesday’s M-Real Stakes.
AHOY THERE! BOATING
COMES TO GOODWOOD
‘All the nice girls, love a sailor,’ and so does Goodwood on the final day of its May Trials meeting.
For the first time in its 200-year history the famous racecourse is hosting the British marine industry for a unique day when boating meets racing. Some of the biggest names of the Turf will rub-a-dub-dub up against key marine industry personnel for an event which is being sponsored and supported by the British Marine Federation.
A similar themed racing day, in which Goodwood will again host the aviation industry, takes place at the racecourse on Thursday next week (May 29), when the feature race is the Casco Classified Stakes.
Reflecting on today’s nautical theme, Rod Fabricius, Goodwood’s managing director, said: “The link for us is Chichester marina and the harbour, Port Solent and the Brighton marina. There is a very strong boat-building industry along the South Coast and a lot of people enjoy sailing.
“And our aviation race day is a natural event for us given that we have our own airfield and flying school with a large number of aircraft movements throughout the year.”
WINNING QUOTES RACE ONE
SUNSEEKER EBF CONQUEROR STAKES (LISTED RACE)
ALDORA STICKS HER NECK OUT
FOR THE BUILDERS
Aldora won a competitive opener -the Listed Sunseeker EBF Conqueror Stakes - on day three of the May Trials meeting, and fuelled the dreams of six builders from the South East of England.
The Aldora Partnership bought the filly in September from her breeder, but left her in training with Newmarket-based Mick Ryan. Syndicate member Tony Chard says she has now won £65,000 in prize money since they purchased her, and today’s win in the Sunseeker EBF Conqueror Stakes was her third of the season.
Another member of the syndicate, Dougal Donaldson, said: “She’s come on in leaps and bounds - hopefully she can win us a Group race now.”
Ryan has been a shrewd handler of fillies in years gone by - notably with Katies and White Diamond - and her owners accept that she may go on a continental journey in a bid to collect further black type, possibly in Germany.
Aldora’s jockey, Martin Dwyer, was riding his third winner of the meeting. He said: “She’s a tough filly and has done it well - her neck was getting longer and longer up the straight.
“She was giving a lot of weight to the three-year-olds but she’s strong. She’s been running over a mile and a quarter, so I knew she’d stay.”

SUNSEEKER EBF CONQUEROR STAKES
RUNNER-UP “SO GUTSY”
“That was much more like it,” declared Amanda Perrett after Welsh Diva had gone down to Aldora in the Sunseeker EBF Conqueror Stakes after a valiant attempt to make all the running.
The filly had been disappointing in two previous ventures this year, but Perrett blames herself for the second flop. “I should not have run her at Newmarket so soon after Sandown, but the opportunity looked too tempting,” she said.
“She was really brave there and it took the winner a long time to get past her.”
There are some big race options for Welsh Diva, including the Queen Anne and Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot.
Chris Richardson of Cheveley Park Stud was very pleased with the effort of their Fantasize, who finished third in what he felt this was “a very good Listed race, and she was beaten by two older fillies.
“She looked as if she wanted further and a drop of rain would not have been a bad thing for her.The one millimetre they had did not have much effect on the ground.
“She is a very tough and strong filly and Michael (Stoute) trains her almost as if she was a colt - she needs plenty of work.
“She is in the Coronation but Russian Rhythm will run there and in any case she wants more than a mile as she showed there. She is in the Pretty Polly in Ireland and there is also a Group 11 race at Chantilly which could suit her.”
WINNING QUOTES RACE TWO
PETERS FAIRLINE FESTIVAL STAKES
ISLAND HOUSE BACK TO HIS BEST
Island House, who was just beaten in the race last year and won it three years ago, showed that anno domini has not dented his ability or his enthusiasm when he readily turned round recent form with Rawyaan in the Listed Peters Fairline Festival Stakes.
“I was a bit worried when he ran at Kempton (when the horse was fifth behind Parasol with Rawyaan fourth) as I wondered if he had lost interest when he seemed a bit flat,” said the old horse’s trainer Geoffrey Wragg.
“But quite clearly he hasn’t and he is pretty remarkable to maintain such enthusiasm for racing as he is now seven and still a full horse.
“He would have liked softer ground than this, and that worried me, but he has done it really well.
“He is not really a Group Three horse, though he has won once at that level and we shall keep him to Listed races like this.
“There is nothing for him at Ascot, but I may well run him in La Coupe at Longchamp during Ascot week.”
PLACED QUOTES RACE TWO
PETERS FAIRLINE FESTIVAL STAKES (LISTED RACE)
CUMANI DELIGHTED
WITH ENDLESS HALL
Island House won the Peters Fairline Festival Stakes, but trainer Luca Cumani was more than happy with the effort of Endless Hall, a Gr.1 winner who is on the comeback trail following an injury last year.
Endless Hall, who missed the whole of last season and reappeared at Newmarket last month, battled on valiantly up the straight, eventually losing the runner-up spot by just half a length to Rawyaan.
It was a fair effort by Cumani’s horse, and the Newmarket trainer said: “I’m delighted - he’s coming back. He’s a very hard horse to get fit, and when he won the Singapore Cup [Gr.1] he had been in training in Dubai for the winter and we had trained him really hard. And he ran in the Sheema Classic before he went to Singapore.
“Today he went past the Hamdan horse [Rawyaan] and then blew up. His next race will be in Milan on the Sunday after Royal Ascot. He’ll run next in the Gran Premio de Milano, a race he won two years ago.”
WINNING QUOTES RACE THREE
EXCEL SCHRODERS RATED STAKES
(SHOWCASE HANDICAP)
SALES TEAM REJOICE
WITH JARVIS
A group of owners called Sales Race 2001 Syndicate was rejoicing with trainer William Jarvis following the victory of Flownaway in the Excel Schroders Rated Stakes.
The four-year-old gelding, whose half-brother Eau De Cologne runs at Kelso this evening, came with a sustained late run which enabled him to hold off Theatre and Distinction by one and a half lengths and a short-head. The result completed a 59-1 double for jockey Darryl Holland, who had earlier ridden Island House to victory.
Flownaway was winning his fifth race in his last seven starts, his only disappointing effort during that sequence coming on his most recent outing when he was unplaced in the Chester Cup. Jarvis said: “This is a very decent horse. He was disappointing in the Chester Cup, but despite not handling Chester he was still going well three furlongs out. He’s very progressive and could be a very good horse next year.”
Among Flownaway’s owners are a group of employees of Tattersalls, the auctioneers. Jimmy George, a Tattersalls director, said: “There are enough members of this syndicate for me not to be able to retire!”
George continued: “I should think we’ll be thinking about races like the Northumberland Plate and Ebor Handicap for the horse, but it’s all up to the trainer. I’ve had a small bet today, but he ran so poorly at Chester that you couldn’t be sure.
“Our first ever winner was here at Goodwood - a 33-1 shot called Wake Up, trained by James Eustace. Our other horse, Landing Strip, runs at Brighton tomorrow.”
Darryl Holland confirmed that he was going all out for the jockeys’ championship.
PLACED QUOTES RACE THREE
EXCEL SCHRODERS HANDICAP
THE BEST IS YET TO COME
“He is an improving horse, but he still a bit green as he showed when he hung in towards the fourth horse there,” said Jamie Poulton after Theatre had finished strongly to snatch second place from Distinction behind the successful Flownaway.
“I am sure that if he keeps going like this he will make up into a really useful horse next year, maybe up to Listed level, but I don’t want to give him too hard a time of it this season in view of his comparitive inexperience.
“I am sure he can win a big handicap, but I don’t want to bottom him by going for races like the Duke of Edinburgh, the Ascot Stakes or the Ebor. Such big fields can make for very rough races and it just might put him off.”
Tim Jones of Highclere Thoroughbred Racing was delighted with the effort by third home Distinction, who was just run out of second place on his first appearance for 273 days.
“I think he was just a bit ring rusty, but that was a good effort with all that weight,” he said.
“He was put in the Hardwicke because races like that close early and you want to be in in case you prove that you are good enough, but he has also been entered for the Curragh Cup and could be put in the Ebor.
“It is nice to have an older horse like him to fly the flag for the team and the long term dream is to have a go at the Melbourne Cup. I know that is a very long way off, but we can always think about it.”
WINNING QUOTES RACE FOUR
MARINE TRADER MAIDEN FILLIES’ STAKES
HANBURY OFF THE MARK
Ben Hanbury got off the mark for the turf season when Itnab, a daughter of the dual classic heroine Midway Lady, romped home by five lengths from Darmagi in the Marine Trader Maiden Fillies’ Stakes. He has, though, been successful on the all weather.
“Things have been quiet because we have had a lot of coughing and other problems,” he said, “but this is a really nice filly. She is the best of mine and she will have some good entries.”
Amanda Perrett, who trains the runner-up and was sending out her second runner-up of the day, was happy with the filly’s reappearance. “We shall be looking for another maiden with her,” she said.
Third home Clever Clogs, who started favourite, had been entered for the Oaks.
“I was pleased with what she did, but the idea is to win a maiden with her first,” trainer Ed Dunlop said.
WINNING QUOTES RACE FIVE
RAYMARINE STAKES (HANDICAP)
NO GROUNDS FOR DEBATE
AS GRIZEDALE SCORES
There has been plenty of debate about the ground conditions which best suit Grizedale, but he handled Goodwood’s good to firm going without problem when sweeping through late to win the Raymarine Handicap under topweight.
The four-year-old’s triumph was another for jockey Richard Quinn, who scored his 100th Goodwood victory earlier in the week.
Grizedale was trained by Ed Dunlop last year, but he was sold at Tattersalls’ Horses-in-Training Sale and new owner Roger Kilby sent him to John Akehurst’s stable at Epsom.
Kilby, who makes a living from property developing, has ten horses in training with Akehurst and three with William Jarvis. The successful owner said: “The horse was always getting beaten by hitting the front too soon, so we rode him differently today and Richard [Quinn] said he did it nicely. That’s the way we ride Capricho, who I also own.
“Everybody keeps saying he needs soft ground, but I’m not so sure after that.”
Akehurst’s assistant, Mick Atwater, said: “The horse was disappointing at Ascot on his first start this season, but he has been working well since and we fancied him. We held him up today as an experiment and it worked.”
Kilby hopes to see Grizedale carry his colours at Royal Ascot, probably in the Buckingham Palace Stakes over seven furlongs, while the Bunbury Cup at Newmarket, in which he was second last year, is also on the agenda.
WINNING QUOTES RACE SIX
DENOVO MAIDEN FILLIES’ STAKES
BUTLER’S FIRST TWO-YEAR-OLD RUNNER
Gerard Butler struck with his first juvenile winner of the season when 10-1 My Personal Space got the better of Swahili and uneasy favourite Pearl Grey in the final furlong of the DeNovo Maiden Fillies’ Stakes.
And the success brought back memories of the meeting, though not of this particular race, for the trainer.
“I remember coming to this meeting four years ago with Compton Admiral to run in a maiden race, and he was beaten by Bachir, who went on to take the Richmond Stakes that season,” he said.
In view of the fact that Bachir won the Irish and French 2,000 Guineas the following season and Compton Admiral’s wins included the Eclipse and the Craven Stakes, that must have been a very hot maiden race !
My Personal Space, who races for a syndicate called the Great Partnership, cost 57,000euros when sold as a yearling and comes from the same family as the Melbourne Cup winner At Talaq and the triple Grade 1 winner Annoconnor.

DENOVO MAIDEN FILLIES’ STAKES
NO HIDING PLACE
FOR BEATEN HORSES
Some well-bred fillies lined up for the DeNovo Maiden Fillies’ Stakes, and it would be no surprise to see the first three progress during the season.
My Personal Space proved best on the day, but there was much to like about runner-up Swahili, the mount of Richard Hughes, and third-placed Pearl Grey, who was ridden by Richard Hills. Both the second and third saw plenty of daylight, while the winner enjoyed the benefit of being settled in the slipstream of the leaders.
Pearl Grey was easy to back, and drifted from 11-8 to 11-4 favourite, and trainer David Loder said: “That’s no surprise. She’s a nice filly, but not a superstar - I’d have been pleasantly surprised if she’d won. It would have helped if we could have dropped her in, but she got stuck on the outside.”
Swahili, who is part-owned by Andy McDonald, was backed in from 7-1 to 4-1. Her trainer, Richard Hannon, said: “She couldn’t get any cover, while the winner’s got all the cover in the world.
“We’ll try to win a maiden with her in the future. I’m happy enough.”
McDonald is part-owner in another decent Hannon two-year-old, Mac The Knife, a Daggers Drawn colt who has won this season.
WINNING QUOTES RACE SEVEN
AVON INFLATABLES APPRENTICE STAKES (HANDICAP)
SAVAGE FLIES HOME IN ONE-TWO FOR BRADLEY
Chepstow trainer Milton Bradley ran three horses in the Avon Inflatables Apprentice Stakes and was able to enjoy a one-two for his stable when Fly More beat Indian Bazaar in a nip-and-tuck finish.
Fly More, the 9-4 favourite, beat his stablemate by a short-head, while the Ted Powell-trained Turibius finished a length further back in third.
The result was another reason to smile for Mark Savage, 21, who was riding his first winner at Goodwood, and his 18th in total.
Savage, who was born and raised in Bristol, said: “I joined ‘Milts’ immediately after leaving the Racing School [in Newmarket] and have been with him ever since. Everything I’ve put into the job he’s given me back. He’s been great to work for.”
Fly More was Savage’s third winner this season, and his second of the week following a gambled-on victory on Adobe at Bath.
Runner-up Indian Bazaar, who was ridden by Brian Reilly, is owned by Ron Harris, who collected the winner’s trophies on behalf of Bradley from the race sponsors.
GOING NEWS AT 10 AM
There was virtually no rain overnight and the track has dried up again from yesterday, so that the going for the third and final day of the May Trials meeting is
GOOD TO FIRM
on all parts of the course.
“We had just under one millimetre of rain last night, which has had virtually no effect on the ground,” said clerk of the course Seamus Buckley.
“Some rain is forecast for this afternoon.”
BETTING NEWS
With Sir Michael Stoute and Kieren Fallon having been in cracking form with a double here yesterday from Princely Venture and Favourable Terms, punters have decided that they can have another good afternoon.
In spite of having to carry top weight in the ExCel Schroders Handicap (2.45), their Distinction has attracted plenty of support this morning and is at 11-4 from 3-1 with Ladbrokes and at 5-2 from 100-30 with Hills.
In the same race Ladbrokes report good interest in Chai Wallah, who is now at 2-1 from the morning 9-4, and Hills have seen interest in Moon Emperor, who has been trimmed by a couple of points to 12-1.
The Tote report good support for Lygeton Lad in the Raymarine Handicap (3.55) and he has come in from 14-1 to 10-1.
