ALL THE MAIN CONTENDERS AMONG 31 ACCEPTORS FOR THE VODAFONE DERBY

All the main contenders remain on course for the 2003 Vodafone Derby after the final forfeit stage today (May 21), with 31 horses still engaged in the £1.2 million classic, compared to 25 at the same stage last year.

Heading the acceptors is the Sagitta 2000 Guineas winner Refuse To Bend, trained in Ireland by Dermot Weld. The unbeaten Sadler's Wells colt will be bidding to become the first colt since Nashwan in 1989 to win both classics and only the third since the great Nijinsky in 1970. Refuse To Bend could be joined on June 7 by his stable companion Multazem, an impressive winner of a maiden race at the Curragh on his only start last month.

Aidan O'Brien is bidding to make history this year by becoming the first man ever to train three consecutive winners of the world's most famous race, following on from the victories of Galileo (2001) and High Chaparral (2002). The master of Ballydoyle still has seven to choose from - Alberto Giacometti, Balestrini, Brian Boru, Handel, Hold That Tiger, Solskjaer and The Great Gatsby.

The strong hand of the Irish this year is further strengthened by the presence of the John Oxx-trained Alamshar. The Key Of Luck three-year-old has followed the same path as the last three Vodafone Derby winners, having won the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial at Leopardstown on his latest appearance.

Godolphin still has a quartet of entries engaged at this stage. They include Lateen Sails, who landed the Listed Michael Seely Memorial Glasgow Stakes at York on his latest appearance along with Songlark and Graikos, who both ran well when fourth and fifth respectively in the Tote Dante Stakes at York. The Godolphin contingent is completed by New South Wales.

Dalakhani is the one remaining entry from France. The unbeaten half-brother to Daylami has won all of his five starts to date, most recently taking the Group One Prix Lupin at Longchamp on May 11.

Magistretti won the Tote Dante Stakes at York earlier this month and he looks to head the home challenge, along with the Mark Tompkins-trained Franklins Gardens who already has experience of the unique demands of the Vodafone Derby course, having won the Weatherbys Blue Riband Trial Stakes at Epsom Downs on April 23 before going on to victory in the Bet Attheraces On 0800 083 83 83 Derby Trial Stakes at Lingfield on May 10, when he had Let Me Try Again in second. Let Me Try Again is trained in Epsom by Terry Mills and will be bidding to become the first Epsom-trained winner of the Vodafone Derby since April The Fifth in 1932 (Straight Deal won the wartime Derby at Newmarket in 1943).

Shield won the Group Three Bonusprint.com Classic Trial at Sandown Park on April 25 with Strength N Honour back in third. Gerard Butler's colt will be attempting to follow in the footsteps of Shahrastani, Shergar, Henbit and Troy, who all won at Sandown before going on to score at Epsom Downs.

Barry Hills has trained the runner-up of the Vodafone Derby on four occasions and this year the Lambourn trainer has a trio of entries still to choose from - Dunhill Star, Gala Sunday and Private Charter. Veteran Newmarket trainer Clive Brittain, who sent out Terimon to finish second at 500/1 in 1989, also has two entries remaining in the shape of Lundy's Lane and Titruel.

The other entries include the John Gosden-trained Summerland, recent Newbury handicap winner Prince Nureyev and Unigold, who finished runner up in the Listed Letheby & Christopher Predominate Stakes at Goodwood on Tuesday. Completing the field are John Dunlop's maiden Alabanov, Abunawwas trained in Ireland by Kevin Prendergast and the outsider Skellings Rock, from the small yard of Brendan Duke.

Stephen Wallis, Managing Director at Epsom Downs Racecourse, commented: "I am delighted to see that all the main contenders are still engaged in the Vodafone Derby and we look forward to welcoming any more entries at the supplementary entry stage on June 2 for what looks set to be a great renewal of the premier classic.

"All the big owners are well represented but it is great to see that there are still several smaller owners pursuing the dream of Derby success."

The Vodafone Derby's next confirmation stage is at the five-day stage on June 2 when there is one last chance to add a horse to the field - the £90,0000 supplementary entry stage.

The Vodafone Derby, Vodafone Oaks and Vodafone Coronation Cup form part of the first leg of the British Horseracing Board's exciting new Summer Triple Crown and Grand Slam Bonus.

GOODWOOD MAY TRIALS MEETING 2003
RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE
SECOND DAY, WEDNESDAY, MAY 21

PREVIEW OF PETERS FAIRLINE FESTIVAL STAKES

Island House, who won the race three years ago and was beaten a head in it last year, will try for a second success in the Peters Fairline Festival Stakes tomorrow, in which he will have five opponents.

Before the start of the season the seven-year-old’s trainer Geoff Wragg had said that Island House was one of the senior members of his team that he was much looking forward to having in action again and the horse made a satisfactory reappearance when fifth to Parasol in a Listed race at Kempton four weeks ago.

In that race he finished one place and one length behind Rawyaan, whom he will meet on the same terms tomorrow, so it should once again be close between them.

Richard Hills, who will be riding Rawyaan for his retaining owner Sheikh Hamdan al Maktoum, will also be trying for a second Festival Stakes win, as he partnered Sheikh Hamdan’s Mubtaker to victory two years ago.

Vintage Premium began last year as a handicapper with a rating of 92, but he made such progress through the season that he was thought good enough to run in the Group 11 Prix Dollar at Longchamp at the Arc meeting.

He had previously been pipped by Island House, when receiving 4lb (he is to get 3lb tomorrow) in the Doonside Cup at Ayr, and showed that he is continuing in excellent form when just beaten by Parasol at Chester earlier this month. He is a tenacious front-runner who often proves very hard to pass.

Cape Town had become rather disappointing until showing signs of a revival at Newmarket last time when he was third to Carnival Dancer over a mile and a quarter, finishing some five lengths in front of Endless Hall.

The latter, who won the Singapore Gold Cup in 2001, missed all last season and is entitled to have come on quite a bit as that Newmarket race was his first for well over a year. His stable is in good form.

King’s Ironbridge, who completes the line-up, used to be a stablemate of Cape Town until he was moved after connections were unhappy with the ride he was given in the 2,000 Guineas two seasons ago.

He won for Brian Meehan last year but has since moved again and is now with Sylvester Kirk. He ran respectably when fourth to Right Approach in a Listed race at Windsor ten days ago.

FANTASIZE BIDS TO CONQUER
FOR SIR MICHAEL

Sir Michael Stoute has yet to win the Sunseeker EBF Conqueror Stakes (1.45), the opening race on day three of the May Trials meeting tomorrow, but Fantasize gives him an excellent chance of breaking his duck.

The Kieren Fallon-ridden three-year-old scored over one mile when winning a Listed race at Ascot late last month, a victory which followed a maiden win last year.

A total of seven fillies have been declared to run in the one-mile event, which was first run in 1997. Since then trainer Henry Cecil has farmed the contest three times, while Amanda Perrett’s stable won the spoils last year courtesy of Dolores.

Perrett calls upon four-year-old Welsh Diva in her bid to retain the race - a winner three times from six starts last year, Welsh Diva’s victories then included a Listed handicap and a Gr.3 contest in Italy, but she has been unplaced in two outings this season.

One of those defeats came at Newmarket earlier this month, when she was unplaced behind the Mick Ryan-trained Aldora. The winner that day has since finished third at York, but she is being kept active by her trainer and joins the field for tomorrow’s race.

Fantasize is one of two three-year-olds in the race - the other is Irtahal, trained by Marcus Tregoning, and placed in her only two starts. She was third in the Musidora Stakes behind Cassis on her latest start, and gets a handy maiden allowance from her rivals.

A trio of Newmarket-trained fillies complete the field for the £35,000 race - they are the Rae Guest-trained Lady Lindsay, Clive Brittain’s Mameyuki and Geoff Wragg’s Monturani, who makes her seasonal debut after a couple of Listed victories in 2002. She has not run since finishing unplaced in the French Oaks last summer.

SECOND DAY, WEDNESDAY, MAY 21

WINNING QUOTES RACE ONE
BAKER TILLY TROPHY

BANJO BAY IN TUNE
FOR DAY’S OPENER

Banjo Bay, who “flipped over” in the stalls on his previous start, made amends when landing the opening race on day two of the Goodwood May Trials meeting.

The five-year-old, who is trained in Lincolnshire by James Given, came from off the pace to win the Baker Tilly Trophy by a head a neck from Loyal Tycoon and Strathclyde.

Jockey Michael Fenton, who had been dumped on the floor when Banjo Bay lost his cool at Ascot, said: “The stalls were a bit of a worry, but I kept the hood on as long as possible and took it off when the gates were about to open. He gets a bit claustrophobic and fractious in the stalls.

“We’re still learning about the horse - he gave me a good ride.”

The winner raced in the colours of Ann Lees-Jones and Major Bill Paton-Smith, a former Jockey Club handicapper who still acts as a steward at Chester.

THOUGHTS ABOUT THE STEWARDS -- CUP

“He has run a really good race and I am delighted with him,” said John Cullinan after Strathclyde had been beaten only in a double photo behind Banjo Bay and Loyal Tycoon.

“It is important with this horse that he stays on the bit for as long as he can and comes to win his race as late as possible. If he gets there too soon he sometimes loses interest a bit and today he has hung away towards the rails before running on again at the end.

“He is really a true five furlong horse, but if he is to get six -- and I think he can if things go his way -- this is the place for him to do it, and I would like to think that it is worthwhile having a crack at the (Vodafone) Stewards’ Cup with him.

“But the race that really is for him is the Hong Kong Trophy at Ascot just after Goodwood. I think his name is already on the trophy for that.”

CAFFREYS LUPE STAKES

IMPRESSIVE, BUT OAKS FAR FROM CERTAIN

Ocean Silk impressed many as a potential winner of next month’s Vodafone Oaks, but she is far from certain to run in it.

“She will certainly be left in at the next forfeit stage (tomorrow), but I shall have to talk about plans with Robert (Sangster) and Jimmy (Fortune),” said the filly’s trainer John Gosden.

“She will run either in the Oaks or the Ribblesdale at Ascot. I certainly have a preference, but I am not saying at the moment which race I favour !

“She is still an inexperienced filly and she needed every yard of that mile and a quarter. Chester, in spite of what people say, is a galloping track and she needed every inch when she won there last time. The horse she beat, Piano Star, ran what I call a solid race here yesterday in view of his lack of experience for a race like the Predominate.

“The mile and half will suit this filly well, but she is still inexperienced. She gave away 20 lengths at the start the first time she ran and she was rather slow into her stride today.”

For Robert Sangster this success raised the hope of a second Oaks success this year as he related how he was telephoned at 3 am on Sunday morning to be told by trainer Tony McEvoy that his filly Laroche had won the Australian Oaks.

Bookmakers’ reaction to Ocean Silk’s success varied wildly. She is as high as 25-1 (from 40) with Victor Chandler, but as low as 8-1 with Coral. In between you can get 16-1 (from 33) with Hills, Paddy Power and the Tote, and 14-1 (from 33-1) with Ladbrokes.

Oaks still a possible for
Mezzo Soprano

Mezzo Soprano, who races in the colours of Godolphin, finished one and a quarter lengths behind the winner Ocean Silk in the day’s big classic trial at Goodwood, the Caffreys Lupe Stakes.

Saeed Bin Suroor, who trains Mezzo Soprano, said: “The filly needs further - I think one mile and a half will be better for her. She learns every time she races.

“She’s entered in the English and French Oaks but at the same time we might think of the Gr.2 race at Royal Ascot [the Ribblesdale Stakes]. We’ll see how she comes back after the race, but what I like about this filly is that she learns all the time.”

The stewards noted that Mezzo Soprano had suffered slight interference from fourth-placed Midsummer, but they accepted the incident was accidental and took no further action.

Charles Cyzer, the trainer of third-placed Hearts ‘n Minds, said jockey Kieren Fallon felt the filly needed more time. “He says she’s not quite there yet,” said Cyzer. “She’s very green and changed her legs coming down the hill. I don’t think it’s her sort of track.

“She’s in the Oaks but I doubt she’ll run there. We’ll probably duck it and look for something else.”

Beaten favourite Midsummer, who had been runner-up in the Lingfield Oaks Trial on her previous start, was fourth.

Teddy Beckett, racing manager to owner Khalid Abdullah, felt the drop back in trip may not have favoured Midsummer. He said: “She’s just hung a little bit two furlongs out and then run on. Contrary to what we thought earlier, she probably wants one and a half miles.”

Asked about plans for Midsummer, Beckett added: “I should think they’ll be fairly conservative.”

WINNING QUOTES RACE THREE
BONUSPRINT STAKES (SHOWCASE HANDICAP)

HITCHCOTT RIDES FIRST
GOODWOOD WINNER

Apprentice Sam Hitchcott rode his first Goodwood winner at the second attempt when making all the running on the Mick Channon-trained Naahy in the Bonusprint Handicap (3.15). The combination beat Into The Breeze and Tidy by one and a quarter lengths and three-quarters of a length.

Hitchcott, 20, was born in Devon, but has spent most of his life living near Lingfield in Surrey. He had his first Goodwood spin yesterday when third in the Taurus Recycling Maiden Stakes, and was more than happy to go two places better today.

The jockey said: “I’ve been with Mr Channon since February, and it’s going well. Before that I was apprenticed to Mick Easterby in the North. I’ve ridden at most of the big tracks up there, but I wouldn’t mind coming back here a bit more often.”

Naahy was following up a recent Newmarket win, and Channon said: “He’s a consistent little horse - a bonny horse that loves racing. He’s a front-runner and they are always there to be shot at.”

Channon has yet to train a classic winner, but hopes his luck changes on Saturday in the Irish 2,000 Guineas when he saddles Zafeen, who was second in the English equivalent at Newmarket last month.

Of Zafeen, Channon said: “I’m very sweet on him. He’s in good heart. We didn’t get any luck in running [in the English Guineas], but the racing game is a marathon, not a sprint. We’ve got to get lucky one day.”

“HE IS IMPROVING”

“This is an improving horse and I am sure that there is a nice race in him,” said John Hills after Into The Breeze had beaten all but all the way winner Naahy in the valuable Bonusprint Handicap.

“I thought at one moment, about a furlong out, that we might get to the winner, as he had been out there for a long time and might have been getting tired. But, to his credit, he pulled out more just when I was getting a bit hopeful.

“But I am still delighted with the way our horse ran. Michael (Hills, the trainer’s brother and Into The Breeze’s jockey) said that he had to use a bit of his speed to get a position from where he was drawn.

“The thing is now whether we stay at seven furlongs or move up to a mile. From the way he was running on there you would think that another furlong would suit him, but he comes from the same family as Sigy, so there is a lot of speed in it.

“There are good seven furlong handicaps at Epsom and Ascot, so we shall have to look at those. There is plenty to think about for him.”

WINNING QUOTES RACE FOUR
M-REAL CONDITIONS STAKES

FINE COMEBACK BY PRINCELY VENTURE

Princely Venture, off the course since finishing ninth in the Irish Derby almost ten months ago, made a splendid comeback when he wore down long time leader Mesmeric to take the M-Real Conditions Stakes.

“That was a very good effort -- he did it really well,” said Jimmy Scott, travelling head lad to the winner’s trainer Sir Michael Stoute.

“He cracked a bone on his off hind when he ran in Ireland, but we have always thought a lot of him and that is was worth keeping him in training as a four-year-old.”

Princely Venture is held in enough regard by his trainer to have been entered for races like the Eclipse and the Hardwicke, and Scott forecast that “he will improve a lot for that run.”

OUT OF THE WARS AND
INTO THE PLACES

The Dunlop family had to be content with the minor places in the M-Real Conditions Stakes, when Mesmeric, trained by Ed, finished second, and Harlestone Grey, trained by John, came in third.

Mesmeric, who wore blinkers for the first time, attempted to make all the running under Jimmy Fortune, but was cut down in the final strides when Princely Venture came with a late surge.

Ed Dunlop said of Mesmeric: “He’s run well, but keeps a little bit to himself and Jimmy suggested we should try him in blinkers. He’s worn a visor many times before.

“He was struck into in his previous race and had a few cuts on his legs, and he fractured a hind leg last year. He’s a bit of an old war hero.”

Harlestone Grey has not been without his own misfortune, and was making his seasonal debut.

John Dunlop, who owns and trains the grey, said: “I’m delighted with that run, because he probably wants further and he’s come back from a long time off. He broke a pedal bone during the close season while turned out at stud.”

WINNING QUOTES RACE FIVE
CHICHESTER FESTIVAL THEATRE MAIDEN FILLIES’ STAKES

FILLY GETS FAVOURABLE
WORD FROM FALLON

An unraced daughter of Selkirk called Favourable Terms proved the answer to the 17-runner Chichester Festival Theatre Maiden Fillies’ Stakes (4.20).

The three-year-old, who was sent off the 11-4 favourite, became a near
16-1 double for trainer Sir Michael Stoute and Kieren Fallon, following up their win in the previous race with Princely Venture.

To win the seven-furlong contest, Favourable Terms had to overcome draw two, but Fallon said: “When they go quick enough early on you can slot in behind and find your way through. When they don’t go quick enough you can get stuck.”

Commenting on the winning filly, Fallon said: “I like her a lot - she’s got a grand attitude.”

Sir Michael was not present, but his travelling head lad, Jimmy Scott, echoed Fallon’s sentiments when saying: “That was quite a useful maiden. She’s a nice filly with a lovely temperament. She was with us last year but was very backward and a bit weak.”

Scott and Fallon later collected trophies and mementoes given to the winner from members of the cast of The Gondoliers, which is currently playing at the Chichester Festival Theatre. Fiona Dunn and Liza Pulman were joined by two of the theatre’s directors, Ruth Mackenzie and Steven Pimlott.”

BAYEUX GETS ON THE WINNERS’ TAPESTRY

Bayeux did the expected when justifying 4-5 favouritism in the two-year-old maiden, which was run in thick mist so that most of the race was invisible from the stands.

“I don’t really know what went on out there, but the jockey (Frankie Dettori) was impressed and said that he is a nice horse,” said the winner’s trainer David Loder.

“He said that he was very green, but even allowing for that he was impressed with what he did.

“You would have to think about the Coventry for him now, though I also have Botanical and Hunting Lodge to think about for that race.

“This colt was one of those who wintered in Dubai and so has been back here for only about six weeks. It is quite hard for them to acclimatise, especially when the weather turns cold as it has done in recent weeks.

“I quite often put a crossed noseband on the two-year-olds, as I did on him. It can stop them getting their tongue over the bit. It costs nothing to put it on and it could save you a race.”

ROYAL ASCOT ON CARDS
FOR GWAIHIR

The racing game must be a mysterious event for the many unraced two-year-olds who tackled the Joe Mitford Faucets ‘A Lifetime in Racing’ EBF Maiden Stakes.

Visibility was cut dramatically just before the off when a sea fret descended on Goodwood, and the runners could not be seen from the grandstand. Television cameras revealed that they had all left the stalls in one piece, but when they emerged from the gloom inside the final furlong the favourite Bayeux was in front and heading for victory. Two other unraced youngsters, Gwaihir and Carrizo Creek, chased him home, finishing a neck and a short-head in arrears.

John Gosden said of Gwaihir: “We’ve got a couple of races on the agenda before Royal Ascot - it would be nice to win something with him and then think about a race like the Windsor Castle Stakes.

“He could wind up over seven furlongs later in the season. He’s never been in front in his life and is only just beginning to learn.”

Stan Threadwell, joint-owner of third-placed Carrizo Creek, was delighted with the performance of his 50-1 shot. The Brian Meehan-trained son of Charnwood Forest was bought at Goffs for 42,000 euros, and Threadwell said: “He could eventually go for a Goffs’ sales race at the Curragh later in the season. This could prove to be a good contest - at least I hope so.”

IT’S OUR SECRET THE KEY
TO CLOSING RACE

Visibility remained poor for the final race on day two of the Goodwood May Trials meeting, but that did not stop It’s Our Secret, trained by Mark Tompkins at Newmarket.

The seven-year-old became jockey Ted Durcan’s first winner this season, after he broke his leg while riding in Dubai during the winter.

It’s Our Secret has been nothing if not consistent, and Tompkins said: “This is a marvellous horse, who always gives his best and always wins races each year.

“He blew up at Brighton last week on his first start this season, and obviously needed the run. He’s just a real nice handicapper and I’ve got nothing fancy in mind for him - the Mail On Sunday series would be a possibility, but he must have firm ground. He cannot handle soft.”

TREGONING GIVES HIGH ACCOLADE
TO GOODWOOD

High Accolade, who won yesterday’s Letheby & Christopher Predominate Stakes at the Goodwood May meeting, was reported to be in good health today by trainer Marcus Tregoning.

The Lambourn trainer said of his colt: “He’s absolutely fine and I’m very pleased with him. He’s taken the race well.”

High Accolade is not entered in the Vodafone Derby, although he could run there if his owner, Lady Tennant, pays a £90,000 supplementary entry fee by the Monday before the classic.

Tregoning said: “I’m not saying he won’t run in the race, but we do have other options. He’s not entered in the King Edward VII Stakes [at Royal Ascot] but he could be supplemented for that, and there’s always the Gordon Stakes [sponsored by Peugeot and run on the first day of the Glorious Goodwood meeting] to consider later on.”

Reflecting on yesterday’s win, Tregoning paid his own tribute to Goodwood when saying: “It’s very special for us to win at Goodwood - it’s my favourite course. There’s no other place quite like it.

“There are other lovely courses around the world, but none quite like Goodwood, and they do a fantastic job of the ground there. They seem to water in dry spells which produces such a good covering of grass.”

Tregoning has no runners at Goodwood today, but he has a fine chance of lifting tomorrow’s opening Sunseeker EBF Conqueror Stakes with Irtahal, who was third to Cassis in the Musidora Stakes at York on her latest start.

Of Irtahal, Tregoning said: “I would fancy her to run well - she seems in very, very good form. Sir Michael’s filly [Fantasize] has to give her 3lb, and the drop back to a mile should suit her.

“My only slight worry is that she ran just nine days ago, and these Listed races are hard to win, but we’re happy that she’s in good order.”

LEADING PLAYERS READY
TO ACT ON THE COURSE

There will be no shortage of talent in the winner’s enclosure after today’s Chichester Festival Theatre Maiden Fillies’ Stakes (4.20).

Actors and theatre directors will be on hand to present the trophies following the race, and members of the public can feast their eyes on a star of the new BBC contemporary thriller series, State Of Play. Michael Feast, who is currently playing the lead role in Nathan The Wise at Chichester’s Minerva Theatre, plays the character of Andrew Wilson in State of Play - the first episode was broadcast last Sunday.

Feast’s CV includes roles in such well-known hits as Kavanagh QC, A Touch of Frost and Midsomer Murders, while he has also enjoyed film roles in McVicar and The Draughtsman’s Contract.

Joining Feast at the winner’s presentation will be actresses Fiona Dunn and Liza Pulman, who play the leading ladies in The Gondoliers, which is currently being staged in Chichester’s main auditorium.

Fiona, who plays Gianetta, and Liza, who takes the part of Tessa in the Venice-based production, will be joined in the winner’s enclosure by two directors at Chichester, Ruth Mackenzie and Steven Pimlott.

NEW HORSE BOX PARK
WELL RECEIVED

Goodwood’s new arrangements for horseboxes to unload at the racecourse after they have come up from the racecourse stables have been very well received

“We have spent a lot of money on improving the facilities for the horses by re-engineering the horse box park at the racecourse, making it more level, providing extra space and constructing a second loading and unloading ramp,” said clerk of the course Seamus Buckley.

His enthusiasm for the new arrangements is strongly supported by those responsible for looking after the horses, as was made clear by Sir Michael Stoute’s travelling head lad Jimmy Scott.

“It is a really big improvement and much safer and better for the horses.” he said. “It makes a lot of difference to have somewhere where the horses can unload so much more easily than before and it is very much appreciated.”

Robert Hamilton, travelling head lad for John Dunlop, declared: “It is a big improvement and very good to have the extra space.”

Robin Trevor-Jones, travelling head lad for Ed Dunlop, said: “It is a vast improvement and now we have much more space than we used to which is very welcome.”

Amanda Perrett’s travelling head lad remarked: “It is very good to have more space - there really was not enough room beforehand. Sometimes on days like Stewards’ Cup day you felt that it was like an accident waiting to happen, but it is so much safer now.”

With the forecast rain not having materialised, Goodwood had a second dry night and the ground for the second day of the May Trials meeting is slightly faster than it was yesterday.

It is now

GOOD TO FIRM, GOOD IN PLACES

on all parts of the course.

“It has just dried out a bit, but there is still plenty of juice in the ground and we are very pleased with the condition of the track,” said clerk of the course Seamus Buckley.

“If the forecasters are right today, the rain should arrive some time this afternoon.”

BETTING NEWS

Martin Dwyer, who was the top jockey on the first day of the meeting with two winners, will be in the number one spot again today if Ladbrokes’ punters have got it right. They have declared firmly for Dwyer’s mount Arctic Desert in the Bonusprint Handicap (3.15) and the colt is now at 8-1 from the morning 10-1.

Strathclyde has been in demand in the opening Baker Tilly Handicap (3.15) and is at the unusual price of 11-1 with three firms -- Hills (from 14-1), the Tote (from 16-1) and Paddy Power (from 12-1). The Tote have also had support for Frankie Dettori’s mount, Colonel Cotton, who has come in by a point from 5-1.

In the Caffreys Lupe Stakes (2.40) Paddy Power have trimmed both Mezzo Soprano and Midsummer from 15-8 to 7-4, and looking further ahead to the Vodafone Oaks, the Tote have issued Epsom prices for the four possible classic runners in the Lupe field. Mezzo Soprano is on 16-1, with Ocean Silk a 25-1 chance, Richemaur on 50-1 and Hearts ‘N Minds on offer at 100-1.

Stablemates The Bonus King and Royal Beacon have been popular with Powers in the Bonusprint Handicap (3.15) and have come in respectively from 25-1 to 22-1 and 14-1 to 12-1.

There has been a good spread of money in the closing harrythehorse.net Handicap (5.30). Powers have cut It’s Our Secret from 10-1 to 8-1 and Dance On The Top from 14-1 to 12-1, while the Tote have brought Summer Recluse in to 9-2 from 6-1.

TONY DOBBIN SCOOPS THE DAILY TELEGRAPH RIDE OF THE MONTH AWARD

In Association with 4attheraces

Tony Dobbin has been awarded April's Daily Telegraph Ride of the Month award in association with Channel4 attheraces.

As the flat season hots up national hunt has taken a place in racing's background however National Hunt jockey " Dobbin" beat the flat boys to take April's award for his ride on the Jonjo O'Neill trained, Master Tern at the Grand National Meeting.

The Daily Telegraph readers and attheraces viewers voted Dobbin the winner for his spectacular display of horsemanship on Master Tern in the Martell Cognac Handicap Chase. The Daily Telegraph will present Dobbin a 500 cheque for his achievement.
An understandably delighted Dobbin joked how ironically he has won this award once before and that was two seasons ago on Master Tern at Cheltenham!

Not known for his natural jumping talent Master Tern wasn't quite foot perfect through out this 3 mile 1 contest runner up Shardam put in a serious challenge between the last two fences and a blunder at the last almost ended his chances. However as Dobbin commented " he is a tough horse and stuck his neck out when it mattered" managing to pull away to win the prestigious handicap by 1 lengths.

The award is just one element of The Daily Telegraph's wide-ranging support of racing including sponsoring the leading jockey's at both the Cheltenham Festival and Martell Cognac Grand National Meeting.
