GOODWOOD MAY TRIALS MEETING 2003
RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE
FIRST DAY, TUESDAY, MAY 20

A LOOK AHEAD TO TOMORROW’S CARD

There are excellent fields for all seven races tomorrow, the second day of the Goodwood May Trials meeting, which features the Caffreys Lupe Stakes, a trial for the Vodafone Oaks next month. There are eight runners for the Listed race which carries guaranteed prize money of £35,000.

Such is the popularity of the two handicaps which open and close the day, the Baker Tilly Trophy and the harrythehorse.net Handicap, that not only have both attracted the maximum field of 20 runners, but no fewer than 19 were eliminate from each race.

There is also a very competitive field for the £50,000 guaranteed Bonusprint Showcase Handicap in which 15 will go to post, and an interesting line-up for the longest race of the day, the mile and a half M-Rea Conditions Stakes.

The programme is completed by two maiden races, the Chichester Festival Theatre Stakes for three-year-old fillies and the Joe Mitford Faucets ‘A Lifetime In Racing’ Stakes for two-year-olds.

PREVIEW OF CAFFREYS LUPE STAKES

A field of eight will contest the Listed Caffreys Lupe Stakes, which carries £35,000 in guaranteed prize money, on the second day of the Goodwood May Trials meeting tomorrow, and four of them will be bidding to emulate Love Divine, who won the race three years ago before going on to classic glory in the Vodafone Oaks at Epsom.

The four who have been entered for the classic are Hearts ‘N Minds, who is trained by Charles Cyzer, Godolphin’s Mezzo Soprano, Ocean Silk from John Gosden’s stable and Richemaur, who is trained by Mark Tompkins.

Mezzo Soprano, who was trained by Andre Fabre last year and joined Godolphin in the winter, is already a classic winner as she won the UAE 1,000 Guineas on the dirt at Nad Al Sheba in March. She disappointed when only 14th behind Russian Rhythm in the Sagitta 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket earlier this month but is considered capable of much better form than that.

Ocean Silk, who was runner-up in her only start last season, held on well to beat favoured Piano Star (due to run here today) in a maiden race at Chester almost a fortnight ago, staying the mile and a quarter in good style and is clearly going the right way.

Hearts ‘N Minds was just behind Oblige, who does not have an Oaks entry though she, like the other three, can be supplemented up to May 31 for a fee of £20,000, when they were third and fourth behind Godolphin’s Hi Dubai in the RL Davison Pretty Polly Stakes at Newmarket. Hi Dubai did not let the form down when just beaten at Group 1 level in France on Sunday.

Richemaur, whose trainer Mark Tompkins has a live outsider for the Vodafone Derby in Franklins Gardens, won a maiden race over a mile in soft ground at Doncaster last backend, but she has not had the benefit of a previous race this year.

Of the other three who are not currently engaged in the Vodafone Oaks, Midsummer put up a brave fight against Santa Sophia in the Lingfield Oaks Trial after her convincing debut success in a maiden race at Kempton last month over a furlong longer than the Lupe distance

Londonnetdotcom disappointed in the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches (France’s 1,000 Guineas) at Longchamp on her first appearance this year, but is thought capable of much better than that, and Royal Bathwick battled on bravely to win a maiden race at Warwick last time but clearly faces a tougher task here.

Racing reaches centre stage

Thespians and racegoers will mingle at Goodwood’s May Trials meeting tomorrow when the Chichester Festival Theatre Maiden Fillies’ Stakes (4.20) takes place.

The race provides a wonderful opportunity to promote the theatre to the local community, and, in return, gives Chichester a chance to thank its supporters amidst the beautiful surroundings of Goodwood racecourse.

A cracking race is in prospect, too, with 17 fillies from some of Britain’s top stables ready to do battle.

Chichester Festival Theatre was founded in 1962 by local councillor Leslie Evershed-Martin and was first directed by one of the doyens of the acting world, Sir Laurence Olivier. It has since built an international reputation for the excellence of its productions, while attracting top-class actors from around the world.

And Chichester is not just about plays - it also puts on classical music concerts, comedy, jazz and cabaret.

Chichester Festival Theatre’s main auditorium with its 1,200 seats was supplemented in 1989 by the 285-seat Minerva Theatre. The two are working in conjunction this summer as the theatre launches into its festival season under the theme of Venice.

The main theatre is currently staging Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Gondoliers, while Gotthold Lessing’s Nathan The Wise is playing at the Minerva.

HAWK WING HEADS 24 ACCEPTORS FOR 2003 VODAFONE CORONATION CUP

A total of 24 horses remain in the exciting 2003 renewal of the £300,000 Vodafone Coronation Cup after today's forfeit stage.

Heading the acceptors is the Aidan O'Brien-trained Hawk Wing. Last year's Vodafone Derby runner-up made a brilliant seasonal reappearance when running away with Group One Juddmonte Lockinge Stakes over a mile at Newbury on Saturday by 11 lengths. O'Brien also has Black Sam Bellamy, the brother to the 2001 Vodafone Derby hero Galileo and a Group One winner in Italy last season, engaged, along with Ice Dancer.

Godolphin is well represented in the 2003 Vodafone Coronation Cup with five horses. The Godolphin quintet is headed by Mamool, who has won both his starts this season, most recently taking the Group Two Emirates Airline Yorkshire Cup at York on May 15. The others are Highdown - winner of the Group Two Prix Guillaume d'Ornano at Deauville last season, Highest - the 2002 St Leger second, Narrative - victorious in the Group Two Premio Carlo d'Alessio at Capannelle, Italy, last season, and Fight Your Corner - the 2002 Vodafone Derby fifth.

The Vodafone Coronation Cup was won last season by Boreal, trained in Germany by Peter Schiergen. This year there could be more German representation with Next Desert, who was last seen out when victorious in the Group One BMW Deutsches Derby at Hamburg on July 7.

The international flavour to the 2003 Vodafone Coronation Cup is further enhanced by the presence of Polish Summer. The six-year-old made an encouraging seasonal reappearance when fourth in the Group Dubai Sheema Classic at Nad Al Sheba and is trained in France by Andre Fabre, who has sent out the winner of the Vodafone Coronation Cup on five occasions.

Heading the British-trained entries is Sir Michael Stoute's star filly Islington. She was a dual Group One winner last season, landing the Vodafone Nassau Stakes at Goodwood and Aston Upthorpe Yorkshire Oaks at York. She was last seen out when third in the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf at Arlington, Chicago, in October.

Marcus Tregoning has two remaining entries including Nayef, triumphant in the 2002 Group One Juddmonte International at York and third to Moon Ballad in the Group One Dubai World Cup on his seasonal reappearance. Tregoning's other entry is Ekraar, fourth in the 2001 Vodafone Coronation Cup.

Other trainers with multiple entries include Mark Johnston who has Bandari, Yavana's Pace and Zindabad engaged while David Elsworth could be represented by Pawn Broker and Indian Creek, winner of the Group Three Bet attheraces 0800 083 83 83 Gordon Richards Stakes at Sandown Park last time out. Newmarket-based Sir Mark Prescott has both Foreign Affairs and the unexposed filly Albanova.

Completing the 24 are last year's St Leger hero Bollin Eric, Imperial Dancer, Ulundi and the much-improved Warrsan, successful in the Group Three Dubai Irish Village Stakes at Newbury and the Group Two Sagitta Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket already this season.

Stephen Wallis, Managing Director at Epsom Downs racecourse, commented: "The 2003 Vodafone Coronation Cup is all set to be a great race and Friday, June 6, at Epsom Downs is the place to be, with the Vodafone Oaks also being run on the same card."

The Vodafone Coronation Cup's next confirmation stage is at the five-day stage on May 31 when there is also a £20,000 supplementary entry stage.

GOODWOOD MAY TRIALS MEETING 2003
RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE
FIRST DAY, TUESDAY, MAY 20

RACE ONE MARRIOTT HOTELS MAIDEN STAKES
WINNING QUOTES

WILSON AND OSBORNE SCOOP
OPENER THANKS TO TODLEA

Lynn Wilson, well known as an owner of jumping horses, enjoyed a winner on the Flat when Todlea took the opening Marriott Hotels Maiden Stakes (2.10).

The son of Desert Prince came with a late run under Martin Dwyer to catch and pass front-running Kawagino in the final 50 yards. Considering the runner-up was third in the Coventry Stakes last year, this could prove a useful performance, and it was certainly one which could interest the handicapper.

Winning trainer Jamie Osborne said: “He has always been a nice horse, although he had niggling problems as a two-year-old that kept him off the racecourse. He had shown at home that there was a nice race in him, although my first thought was to go to Beverley today for a maiden.

“He [Dwyer] feels we could go a mile and a quarter. Originally I thought he was a Britannia Stakes, but having beaten the horse we have he probably isn’t. We’ll have to leave that in the hands of the handicapper.

“If the handicapper takes the form literally we’re cream-crackered. It’s going to be tough now, but if we don’t go the handicap route we’ll look at conditions races.”

MARRIOTT HOTELS MAIDEN STAKES

“HE REALLY DESERVES TO WIN”

Nerys Dutfield was feeling utterly frustrated on behalf of Kawagino after he had been touched off in the final strides by the strong-finishing Todlea in the opening mile maiden.

“He just did not deserve to be beaten and I am sure that he will have his win soon,” she said, “ but he does not like it soft; all he does is gallop.”

Kawagino’s jockey Kevin Darley felt that the runner-up “would have been happy with a horse in front of him making the pace, but he really has tried and deserves to win his race.”

DICK HERN TROPHY PRESENTATION TO MRS PERRETT

Amanda Perrett, who sent out nine winners at Goodwood last year, was presented with the inaugural Dick Hern Trophy for the leading trainer of the year after the first race.

Very appropriately, the presentation was made by Willie Carson, who gave Mrs Perrett a bronze sculpture of the Major, created by Philip Blacker.

Carson was for many years stable jockey to Major Hern, who had a tremendous record at Goodwood over many years and who sadly died last year.

Mrs. Perrett’s excellent season in 2002 was highlighted by the success of Tillerman in the Celebration Mile at the August meeting.

WINNING QUOTES RACE TWO
NEWTON INVESTMENT MANAGEMENT HANDICAP

NOBODY WANTED HIM

Morahib, who failed to make anything near his reserve when he went to the sales at Newmarket last autumn, showed what buyers missed when he wore down Namroud in the final furlong to take the Newton Investment Management Handicap by three quarters of a length.

“We weren’t going to give him away, but there was not a serious bid for him and we bought him back for, I think, 17,000gns,” said his trainer Marcus Tregoning.

“I was amazed that no-one was seriously interested in him as he had won his maiden by seven lengths, but they weren’t and we were happy to have him back.

“His real value for us is as a lead horse in the gallops and he has done some excellent work in that capacity with our top horses like Nayef.

“ But he is clearly capable of winning races in his own right and we shall have to see what the handicapper does with him now.”

As a five-year-old, Morahib, who is a three-quarters brother to Alhaarth, has his possible classic days long behind him, but that idea is still very much under consideration for his stablemate Hammiya, who could be supplemented for the Oaks after her very impressive success at Chester two weeks ago.

“I think it will be a very much last minute decision as there is no point in throwing away £20,000, but Sheikh Hamdan (who also owns and bred Morahib) and I will sit down and talk about,” said the trainer. “We do not have to decide until next week.”

HUGHES TO APPEAL

Richard Hughes plans to appeal against the five day suspension imposed on him for his riding of Summer View, who finished 11th behind Morahib in the Newton Investment Management Handicap, the second race on the card.

The stewards found him guilty under rule 158 of not having ridden to obtain the best possible placing, and also fined the horse’s trainer Roger Charlton £800 under rule 155 (ii) and suspended the horse from running for 30 days.

Hughes thinks he was harshly treated and will appeal against the ban. “The horse was badly drawn and has had problems with his wind, so I could not bounce him out of the gate to try to get a position,” he said

“So I had to come wide and then I was distracted for a few strides on the home turn when Pat Eddery (on Oakley Rambo) kept looking down at his horse as if he was going to pull him up.”

Eddery later reported to the stewards that Oakley Rambo, who finished last, never felt right during the race.

“Then when I got going I rode Summer View all the way to the line.He only passed about three or four horses -- it was hardly as if he was flying at the finish.”

Stipendiary steward Paul Barton explained how the stewards reached their decision. “The stewards listened to the comments made by Mr Hughes and Mr Grantham (Tom Grantham, assistant to the horse’s trainer Roger Charlton) and also heard evidence from the veterinary officer,” he said.

“They were of the opinion after having heard what they had to say that Summer View’s running and riding had been in breach of the rules and imposed the punishments.

“The suspension of five days for Mr Hughes is at the lowest end of the scale for such offences, and the fine imposed on the trainer is on a pro rata basis with the suspension for the jockey.”

WINNING QUOTES RACE THREE
TOTE TRIFECTA STAKES (SHOWCASE HANDICAP)

FRANKIE WINS THE CHESS GAME

Frankie Dettori teamed up with trainer Brian Meehan to win the day’s showcase handicap, the £70,000 Tote Trifecta Stakes (3.15), with Chinkara.

The winner was held up in the 12-strong field, then suddenly burst to the front when a gap opened and held off Anani and Regent’s Secret.

Reflecting on the way the race unfolded, Dettori said: “I had three fancied horses next to me in the early stages so I tracked them, but it was tight for room. Then all of a sudden it was like a chess game, and they all opened up. When the split came he went whoosh.”

Meehan was suffering from a sore throat and was barely able to croak his replies at the post-race press interview. Dettori quipped: “At least I knew Brian couldn’t shout at me if I got beat.”

Asked about the way his horse emerged from the pack, Meehan said: “Sometimes it doesn’t work out here, but Frankie gave him a lovely ride. We’ll see what the handicapper does, but the Britannia Stakes is a possibility.”

PLACED QUOTES RACE THREE
TOTE TRIFECTA HANDICAP

RUNNER-UP “MAY GO FURTHER”

“We are all delighted with that run,” said Joe Mercer, racing manager to owner Mohammed Jaber after Anani had beaten all but strong finishing Chinkara in the
£70,000 Tote Trifecta Handicap, going down by three-quarters of a length after having had every chance entering the final furlong.

“The trainer (Ed Dunlop) is very happy with that effort and so is his jockey (Seb Sanders),” said Mercer.

“He is a fine, good looking horse, just look at the neck on him,” Mercer added. “He has run really well there and I think we may try going a bit further with him next time.”

WINNING QUOTES RACE FOUR
LETHEBY & CHRISTOPHER PREDOMINATE STAKES

TREGONING AND DWYER DOUBLE UP

Marcus Tregoning and Martin Dwyer completed doubles, at 80-1 for the trainer and at 134-1 for the jockey, when High Accolade came from last to first to land the Predominate.

But it seems unlikely that the colt’s owner Lady Tennant will be shelling out the £90,000 necessary to supplement the colt for the Vodafone Derby, for which runner-up Unigold can be backed at 100-1 with the Tote.

“It will be a last minute decision, but I would think it unlikely that he will be supplemented,” said the trainer. “I would think it is more likely that he will follow the route of King Edward VII Stakes and then maybe the Irish Derby than be entered for the Derbyl £90,000 is a lot of money to have to pay.

“But I am sure he is very good colt, which is what Richard Hannon told me when the owner sent him to me last autumn.

“He does nothing at home, you really would learn very little about him on the gallops, but he has gears and he really can quicken.

“This was obviously a big improvement on what he showed when he won at Bath, and I am sure that will be the end of handicaps and it will have to be Listed and Group races for him after this.

“He is very nice horse and I am pretty sure that there is more to come from him after this.”

Martin Dwyer endorsed Tregoning’s enthusiasm about High Accolade. “He has a very good turn of foot, he really can quicken,” he said. “He tends to think he has done enough when he gets his head in front; he is very lazy at home, but he can certainly do it on the track.”

PLACED QUOTES RACE FOUR
LETHEBY & CHRISTOPHER PREDOMINATE STAKES

Unigold still a possible runner
in Vodafone Derby

Unigold proved no match for High Accolade in the Letheby & Christopher Predominate Stakes at Goodwood today, but he could still make the line-up for the Vodafone Derby, run at Epsom on the first Saturday in June. The St Leger could also be on his agenda.

One of three Derby entries in today’s race, Unigold was beaten one and a half lengths by High Accolade, while the favourite, Westmoreland Road, was the same distance behind in third. Bookmakers reacted to the result by cutting Unigold for the Epsom Derby - Ladbrokes reduced the colt from 100-1 to 40-1, Victor Chandler offered 50-1 from 66-1, but the Tote left him as a 100-1 shot. Ladbrokes also shortened up their Derby favourite Refuse To Bend, cutting the Dermot Weld-trained colt from 5-2 to 9-4.

Ed Dunlop, who trains Unigold, said: “Kieren [Fallon] was very complimentary, and said he could be a serious St Leger horse. Realistically he’s not going to win it [the Derby], but he could run very respectably. It’s the owner’s decision and we’re not ruling it out.”

Westmoreland Road let his backers down on the day, but his connections were not despondent. Mark Perrett, husband of trainer Amanda, said: “He had a couple of bumps, but he’s run a good race. We haven’t lost any faith in the horse. He did nothing wrong - he’s still quite inexperienced.”

Perrett could not confirm whether Westmoreland Road’s next race would be the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot.

WINNING QUOTES RACE FIVE
M-REAL CONDITIONS STAKES

Mitcham upstages hot favourite

Bahamian Pirate, the 4-11 favourite, was fully expected to win the M-Real Conditions Stakes (4.20) over six furlongs, but no one told Mitcham the script.

The Terry Mills-trained seven-year-old, a very useful horse in his own right a few years ago, fended off the challenge of Bahamian Pirate running into the final furlong, and eventually won going away by two and a half lengths.

Mitcham won the King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot as a three-year-old, but has only won one race since. Mills said: “You never know with him. He’s got all the ability in the world.

“We told him he’s being retired this year, so he’s decided to give us a couple before he’s turned out in a field. He’s a good old professional sprinter.”

Mills assistant, his son Robert, paid tribute to the work put into Mitcham by stable lass Caroline Hovington. Mills jnr said: “She does a great job on the horse, riding him out every day and never losing faith in him.”

The Mills team are likely to run Mitcham in the King’s Stand Stakes or Cork & Orrery Stakes at Royal Ascot, an occasion when their stable star, Where Or When, will be in action.

Following his run at Newbury on Saturday, when second to Hawk Wing in the Juddmonte Lockinge Stakes, Where Or When was reported in good form. Mills snr said: “The horse is fine. He lost six or seven kilos and we look forward to Ascot now, and to taking on the big fella [Hawk Wing, in the Queen Anne Stakes].

“The score’s one each between them, so the next one is a rubber match. We’ll have another crack at him. He [Hawk Wing] was impressive in the Guineas last year when he raced on his own, and we’ll be trying to get at him to upset him a bit - that’s the plan, anyway.”

WINNING AND PLACED QUOTES RACE SIX
TAURUS WASTE RECYCLING MAIDEN AUCTION STAKES

Doncaster Sales produces one-two

Horses sold at Doncaster Sales dominated the finish of the Taurus Waste Recycling Maiden Auction Stakes (4.55) when Binnion Bay held off the fast-finishing Love Triangle by half a length. Nights Cross was two lengths further back in third.

Binnion Bay started as the 10-11 favourite, but trainer Richard Hannon said: “We’ve no plans for him. He’s not a Royal Ascot horse. He might go to Salisbury in a couple of weeks time. He’s just a fun horse.”

Hannon reflected that Binnion Bay had not cost a fortune. The son of Fasliyev was part of a four-horse haul which he and owner Jim Horgan bought at Doncaster for 50,000gns. As Hannon pointed out, if sons and daughters of Fasliyev start winning decent two-year-old races this season that could look cheap.

Runner-up Love Triangle is trained by David Elsworth for a trio of Irishmen - John Dwyer, PJ Finn and Mick O’Rourke. Dwyer and Finn have enjoyed a fair bit of luck with the good chaser Barryscourt Lad, who won the Great Yorkshire Chase at Doncaster for Martin Pipe’s stable earlier this year.

Commenting on Love Triangle, Dwyer said: “He’ll come on a lot for the run and we’re delighted with him. We’ve no grand plan other than to win a race. We bought two horses at Doncaster Breeze-Up Sale - this one for 34,000gns and another by Daggers Drawn who is also with David.”

Quinn brings up century
of winners at Goodwood

Richard Quinn reached a ton of winners at Goodwood when bringing Wavertree Boy with a fast-and-late finish to take the closing race on day one of the May Trials meeting.

Quinn was given a rousing reception by some of the 150 members of the Wavertree Racing Club, whose head, Ann Dawson, stepped forward to receive the winner’s trophy.

Wavertree has four horses in training - Wavertree Boy with David Elsworth at Whitsbury in Hampshire, and three two-year-olds with Nick Littmoden at Newmarket.

Elsworth admitted that Wavertree Boy, who started at 20-1 for today’s contest, had run disappointingly on his previous start at Chester. “He just didn’t run his race at Chester,” said Elsworth, who is clearly no fan of the Roodee.

Admitting he has had little luck and only one winner, Kathology, at that course, Elsworth said of Wavertree Boy: “We jumped him out and tried to be handy because of the track at Chester, and it didn’t work out, so today we rode him differently and dropped him out.”

The Whitsbury trainer has won many major races in British racing, particularly over jumps, but he also has a very fine record at Goodwood. In contrast to his luck at Chester, his victory today was his 59th at the Sussex racecourse.

GOING NEWS AT 10 AM

Following a dry night the going for the first day of the Goodwood May Trials meeting is

GOOD, with GOOD TO FIRM PLACES ON THE ROUND COURSE.

“We missed almost all the rain which hit parts of the country yesterday and all we had was a shower just before lunchtime which produced only two millimetres of rain,” said clerk of the course Seamus Buckley.

“The forecast today suggests that there may be a few showers, but it seems likely that there will be some more rain coming in overnight and tomorrow.”

WILLIE CARSON PRESENTS THE FIRST DICK HERN TROPHY

Goodwood’s opening day of the 2003 season, today, Tuesday, May 20, sees the presentation of a new award, the Dick Hern Trophy, which will go to the leading trainer each season at the Sussex racecourse.

Willie Carson, now a pundit for BBC Television’s racing coverage and previously Hern’s long-time stable jockey, will make the presentation to Amanda Perrett in the winner’s enclosure after the first race.

The trainer, who gained nine successes in 2002 at her local racecourse, will receive a specially-commissioned bronze sculpture by Philip Blacker together with a permanent memento of a medallion and a magnum of Veuve Clicquot champagne.

Hern, who passed away on May 22, 2002, at the age of 81, loved nothing more than sending out a winner at Goodwood.

One of the greatest post-war trainers, he retired at the end of 1997. He was champion trainer four times and had a great record at Goodwood, where he won most of the big races during his 41-year training career.

The first of his 115 winners at Goodwood came when Trimmer was successful in the 1959 Trundle Stakes.

Over half of Hern’s Goodwood successes came at the Festival meeting. He won back-to-back Sussex Stakes with the great Brigadier Gerard and Sallust in 1971 and 1972, with both going on to victory in the Celebration Mile.

Harayir also took the Celebration Mile in her successful classic season in 1995. Troy was one of his six winners of the Predominate Stakes and then captured the 200th Derby in 1979.

BETTING NEWS

The day’s big handicap, the £70,000 Tote Trifecta Stakes (3.15), has dominated betting in the offices this morning, with punters opting for several of the 12 runners.

Interceptor has been in demand with Ladbrokes, who have cut him from 5-1 to 4-1, and with Paddy Power, who have trimmed the colt to the same price from 9-2.

Louis Napoleon has been in demand with Ladbrokes and Coral, who have brought him in respectively from 16-1 to 12-1 and from 14-1 to 11-1, and Coral have also had money for Tug Of Love, who has been cut from 7-2 to 11-4. Tug Of Love has also been in demand with William Hill, who have reduced his odds from 100-30 to 11-4.

Hills have also had money for Morahib in the Newton Investment Management Handicap (2.40) and have brought him in from 11-1 to 8-1.

For those looking ahead with the Vodafone Derby in mind, the Tote quote prices for the four Epsom possibles on view today. Interceptor is a 100-1 chance, and of the three in the Letheby & Christopher Predominate Stakes (3.45), Piano Star and Unigold are 50-1 shots and Hilbre Island is quoted at 66-1.

21 not out for Goodwood’s managing director

Goodwood’s managing director, Rod Fabricius, is in optimistic mood at the start of his 21st season at the Sussex racecourse.

Fabricius has much to look forward to in 2003 following another batch of improvements at the racecourse, additions to the racing programme, an innovative incentive to owners of Listed horses and the introduction of a prestigious trainers’ prize.

Yet the raison d’etre of any Grade One racecourse executive is to attract top-quality horses and, with Hawk Wing’s brilliant display at Newbury on Saturday still fresh in the memory, Fabricius could not help but recall one of last year’s turf highlights.

“We’ve been lucky enough to see some extraordinary performances here at Goodwood, and one only has to think back to Rock Of Gibraltar’s victory in the Sussex Stakes,” he said. Clearly an entry by Hawk Wing’s connections for the mile Group One race at this year’s Glorious Goodwood meeting would not go amiss.

One incentive for any owner is the increased prize money at Goodwood this year.

Fabricius said: “We are offering record prize money of £3.5m, £500,000 up on last year and equivalent to an 18 per cent increase.

“We have also extended our season by putting on an extra day’s racing on Sunday, October 12, and the quality of our programme has been boosted with the upgrade to Group 2 status of the Lennox Stakes [Tuesday, July 29] and Veuve Clicquot Vintage Stakes [July 30], and a brand new Listed race, the EBF Gladness Stakes, run on the final day of the Glorious Goodwood meeting.”

The new race is one of 13 Listed contests at Goodwood this year, and each one carries an imaginative cash-back incentive to owners. Any horse which runs in one of these events will have their entry fee returned. Who said free racing was not possible?

Fabricius complimented clerk of the course Seamus Buckley and his groundstaff for producing perfect going for the start of the May Trials meeting, and he congratulated Amanda Perrett, who will today receive the Dick Hern Trophy for being last year’s leading trainer at the course.

“It’s poignant that a year after Dick Hern’s sad death that one of the all-time great trainers is remembered with the presentation of a trophy in his name, and most appropriate that his long-time stable jockey, Willie Carson, is to make the presentation.”

Goodwood’s fabulous downland setting makes for a magnificent racecourse, but it does present challenges when it comes to finding a level surface for parking and unloading horse boxes.

An investment in excess of £500,000 has resulted in a re-engineered horsebox unloading area with reinforced rubber matting, new walkways and an additional unloading ramp, and 16 more permanent stables at Goodwood House Stables.

After 21 years at Goodwood, Fabricius admitted there is much to look forward to at the start of the season. “It’s an exciting time, full of expectation about the season ahead,” he commented. “I’ve seen so many changes here over the years, and the improved facilities means racegoers can watch top-class thoroughbred racing in comfort.”

HUNTINGDON SEASON DRAWS TO A CLOSE

As its 2002/2003 season draws to a close, Huntingdon Racecourse holds its penultimate meeting on Bank Holiday Monday 26th May.

Gates will open at 12 noon and the first of a seven race card will commence at 2.05 p.m. Local company, ANC Express, are sponsoring the feature Handicap Hurdle at 3.15 p.m. and the last race sets off at 5.25 p.m.

The last fixture of the season will take place a few days later on 29th May. This evening meeting presents a six race card with the first race commencing at 6.05 p.m. and the last race at 8.50 p.m. Gates will open at 4.00 p.m. and the extremely popular and talented tribute group, Bee Gees Magic, will play live for approximately 1 hour after racing. Advance ticket sales have been busy; parties of 15 or more attract a 20% discount on admission prices.

During the evening the presentation of the Neil Wyatt Groundstaff Award 2002 will be made to Mike Newman and his Groundstaff Team. Organised by The Racecourse Association and judged by a panel representing the Tote, National Trainers Association and Jockeys Association this highly coveted National award recognises the efforts and achievements of racecourse's groundstaff.

Tina Dawson, Racecourse Manager, said 'Mike Newman and his groundstaff team work extremely hard to produce a good racing surface and this award is well deserved recognition for that hard work and effort'.

Admission prices start at £6 per person for the picnic car park area, £12 for the paddock enclosure and £16 for the member's enclosure. Children under 16 are admitted free to all areas and the free shuttle bus will be operating between Huntingdon Station and the Racecourse before and after racing on both days.
