IRISH THOROUGHBRED NEWS
LEADING SIRE DANEHILL DIES
The Irish breeding industry was shocked by the news that Champion sire Danehill passed away early last week.
The loss of such a prolific stallion as Danehill will be felt, not just in Ireland, but also across the world. He was being hand-grazed in his paddock at Coolmore Stud when he suffered a fatal injury last Tuesday.
In terms of success, Danehill is second only to Sadler's Wells. He was responsible for 51 individual Group 1 winners and 207 individual stakes-winners including the mighty Rock Of Gibraltar.
Only last Sunday, he was the sire of the first two home in the French 2000 Guineas, Clodovil and Catcher In The Rye. Danehill died at the age of 17.
HAWK WING BLOWS THEM AWAY AT NEWBURY
The Ballydoyle experiment of keeping top class three-year-olds in training as older horses paid an immediate dividend as Hawk Wing put up a truly stunning performance to win the Group 1 Juddmonte Lockinge Stakes at Newbury.
Runner-up in both the Sagitta 2000 Guineas and the Vodafone Derby last season, Hawk Wing gained his third Group 1 success when making all the running to win by 11 lengths from Where Or When with a further eight lengths back to the third horse home, Olden Times.
"He just has an unbelievable amount of natural ability. To watch him, he always quickens your heart", was O'Brien's instant reaction.
He added, "Last year, circumstances went against him in the spring and then, maybe because of that, he got little problems through the year . Through the winter, there were problems that we had to sort out with muscles and things that everybody said might have niggled him for a long time. This year, he has been working like a dream."
Royal Ascot is a likely target for Hawk Wing who could run over ten furlongs in the Prince Of Wales Stakes or in the Queen Anne Stakes over a mile.
High Chaparral, another Ballydoyle star of last season still in training this year, is unlikely to reappear until July after suffering a bruised shoulder muscle.
O'Brien said, "We won't start riding him out until the end of the month so he will not make the Coronation Cup or Royal Ascot. He was always going to be trained for the second half of the season. There will be races like the Arc and the Breeders' Cup for him.
The big race aside, O'Brien was also in the winners' enclosure after his Grand Reward made a winning debut in the Cantor Sport Maiden Stakes. The fourth foal of the leading racemare Serena's Song, and a half brother to Sophisticat, he quickened well to lead inside the final furlong.
Grand Reward, Ballydoyle's first juvenile runner overseas this season, could be part of O'Brien's Royal Ascot team.
FALBRAV A WINNER IN FRANCE
Falbrav, winner of the Japan Cup last year, could make a quick return to the Far East after his impressive success in the Group 1 Prix d'Ispahan at Longchamp.
The son of Fairy King, winning for the first time for trainer Luca Cumani, scored at this level on three occasions last year and is in-line for a valuable bonus if adding the Takarazuka Kinen at Hanshin in Japan in late June.
An alternative objective would be the Prince Of Wales Stakes at Royal Ascot.
MAMOOL PIPS WARRSAN TO WIN GROUP 2
Mamool, bred in Ireland by Sheikh Mohammed and now racing in the colours of Godolphin, came from last to first to win the Group 2 Emirates Airline Yorkshire Cup.
In doing so, he just got up to deny Warrsan and it is likely that both Irish-bred horses will clash again in the Ascot Gold Cup. Mamool is a son of In The Wings, who is also the sire of Sundays Prix Saint Alary Group 1 winner Fidelite.
TWILIGHT BLUES WINS YORK GROUP 2
Twilight Blues, a son of Bluebird, added to his Listed success at Newmarket last year with a game win in the Group 2 Duke Of York Stakes at York.
Leading two furlongs from home, Twilight Blues stuck to his task admirably to earn a crack at the Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot followed by the July Cup at Newmarket.
LEADING RACEMARE RIDGEWOOD PEARL DIES
A daughter of leading sire Indian Ridge, Ridgewood Pearl, undoubtedly one of the best fillies in the past decade, haemorrhaged after producing a dead foal and later died herself.
Described by John Oxx as "exceptional and definitely the best filly I've trained", Ridgewood Pearl was the champion filly in the International Classifications for 1995 and was voted Horse Of the Year in the Cartier Awards.
Owned and bred by Sean Coughlan and his wife Anne, she won four Group 1 races and her finest moment came when she landed the 1995 Breeders' Cup Mile.
SPECTRUM COLT WINS LISTED EVENT
Gamut, a four-year-old son of Spectrum, landed the Listed skybet.com Stakes at Newbury.
Bred in Ireland by Ballymacoll Stud, Gamut recovered after being hampered at the four-furlong point to win from Fight Your Corner. Gamut needs an ease in the ground to be seen at his best and could now run in the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot.
Another Irish-bred Listed winner in Britain of late was Compton Bolter who won the Braveheart Rated Stakes at Hamilton.
Sold for IR£17,000gns at the Tattersalls (Ireland) September Yearling Sale in 1998, Compton Bolter is a son of Red Sunset and was bred by Rathasker Stud.
LISTED SUCCESS FOR SUN ON THE SEA
Sun On The Sea made all the running to win the Listed Sweettenham Stud Fillies' Trial Stakes at Newbury.
Having only her third start, the daughter of Bering raced clear in the last two furlongs for a comfortable success. She could be tried in the Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot, but on the evidence of this would not look out of place in the Oaks.
Sun On The Sea was bred by Hawthorn Villa Stud in Innishannon, County Cork.
DAYLAMI OFF TO A FLYER
Daylami, a top class performer on the track in his day, enjoyed the perfect start to his new career as a stallion when his first runner scored over five furlongs at York.
Birthday Suit, trained by Tim Easterby, won the Paramount Hotels Maiden Fillies' Stakes and looks certain to improve for the experience.
Daylami stands at the HH The Aga Khan's Gilltown Stud on the Curragh.

FORMER IRISH TRAINED DR BRENDLER TAKES GRADE 2 AT PIMLICOM
Dr. Brendler, formally trained by John Hayden to win the Leopardstown 2000 Guineas Trial, was a winner of the Grade 2 Citgo Dixie Stakes at Pimlico. Second in the contest was the Sadler's Wells colt Perfect Soul.
IRISH FILLIES ON TARGET IN THE USA
The Irish bred filly, Carib Lady, came with a strong late finish to take the Grade 3 Gallorette Handicap at Pimlico. A daughter of Sadler's Wells and bred by D P O'Brien, she is closely related to Burden Of Proof and was gaining her second win from three starts in the US. Carib Lady was bought as a yearling at Goffs Orby Sale for Ir£185,000gns.
Another recent Irish bred to win in the US is the Spectrum filly, Dancing. A winner of her maiden in Dundalk and a Grade 2 winner at Santa Anita, she tracked the pace in the 9 furlong allowance event before kicking for home 3 furlongs out and running home a comfortable ¾ length winner.
DONCASTER'S SATURDAY PROGRAMME SUPPORTED BY LOCAL COMPANIES
The Merlin Land Rover Rosehill Conditions Stakes and The L. J. Monks Ltd. Handicap Stakes, head a seven-race programme at Doncaster on Saturday (24 May), when racing starts at 1.20 p.m.
Top-class three-year-olds are expected to line up for The Rosehill Conditions Stakes, a race over the extended one mile and a quarter – won in the recent past by quality horses such as Chester House and Mutafaweq. Saturday's renewal is supported for the first time by regular sponsors on Town Moor, Land Rover dealers, Merlin of Doncaster.
L. J. Monks Ltd., the Doncaster-based electrical installation engineers, return to the Town Moor to sponsor a valuable handicap contest over seven furlongs.
The European Breeders Fund support a race for maiden two-year-olds, The Zetland Stakes, while the opening race on Saturday is The skybetvegas.com Classified Stakes, a contest for sprinters over six furlongs, one of several races sponsored at Doncaster this year by leading bookmaker, Sky Bet who have also extended their support of The Great Yorkshire Chase, the principle race over Jumps at Doncaster which takes place in January.
The giant Mitsubishi Diamond Vision Screen will assist racegoers to follow all of the action, while the fully-sponsored crèche facility is available in the Family Enclosure at £1.80 per hour.
FRIDAY NIGHT AT PONTEFRACT
The first of Pontefract's three evening meetings this summer takes place on Friday evening (23 May), when racing starts at 6.30 p.m.
The feature race is The Weatherbys Insurance Conditions Stakes, a £20,000 contest for two-year-olds over six furlongs, which could well attract several useful juveniles. Indeed, last year's winner, Checkit (trained by former England footballer, Mick Channon) went on to win a Group 2 race at Baden-Baden in Germany and claim the runners-up spot in a Group One contest at San Siro in Italy in October, The Gran Criterium. The colt took part in the first of this year's Classics, The 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket earlier this month.
Friday evening's programme also includes a trio of competitive handicap races - The Micklegate Stakes (a £12,000-added contest for three-year-olds over one mile), The St. John Ambulance Stakes (one mile and a half) and The MSK Fillies' Stakes over one mile and a quarter.
The latter race is supported by the Morley-based company, Stuart Shopfitting Ltd., in memory of a former director of the company, Malcolm King, who was a keen racegoer and who passed away in February last year.
The giant ToteVision Screen will assist racegoers to see all of the action on Friday night, while the musical entertainment is provided by 'The Hookey Band', who will be playing their Irish music near the Guinness Bar. There will be a selection of children's attractions in the Third Ring.
