TREGONING HOPING FOR HIGH ACCOLADE AT GOODWOOD
Ekraar also being targeted at Goodwood's May Trials Meeting
Marcus Tregoning revealed today that High Accolade is an intended runner in the Listed £50,000 Letheby & Christopher Predominate Stakes at Goodwood on Tuesday, May 20.
The last recognised trial for the Vodafone Derby, run over 11 furlongs, is the one of the features on the first day of the three-day May Trials Meeting, Goodwood's opening meeting of the year.
High Accolade got off to a fine start for the Lambourn trainer, winning a 10-furlong classified stakes at Bath earlier this month when proving three-quarters of a length too strong for Heisse. The three-year-old Mark Of Esteem colt is one of two horses transferred by owner Lady Tennant to Tregoning in the autumn.
The trainer believes that High Accolade is in rude health and should not be inconvenienced by the additional furlong.
"High Accolade has come out of the Bath race brilliantly," said Tregoning. "I hope that the extra distance of the Predominate won't be a problem - I thought that he was running on well last time and we have to give this race a go now because he's finding himself out of handicaps near enough. He may well be up to it anyway but we'll have to see."
Tregoning's mentor, Major Dick Hern, who sadly died last May, loved nothing better than training a winner at Goodwood and Tregoning has already had 16 successes at the beautiful Sussex racecourse.
High Accolade has never encountered any surface other than good to firm ground in five runs. When asked if he needed top of the ground to perform at his best, Tregoning responded: "Again it's hard to say but I don't think so - he probably goes on any ground but we'll have to see."
There are 11 other entries in the Letheby & Christopher Predominate Stakes, including Derby entries Gala Sunday, Hilbre Island, Lundy's Lane, Piano Star and Unigold. The potential field is completed by the improving Westmoreland Road, Excelsius, Heisse, Inch Again, Roskilde and Salsalino.
Tregoning is also hoping to run Ekraar in the £35,000 Listed Peters Fairline Festival Stakes on Thursday at Goodwood's May Trials Meeting.
The six-year-old Red Ransom horse has been placed on four of his last six starts in top-class company including on his last run in the Group One Dubai Sheema Classic at Nad Al Sheba, Dubai, on March 29 when the four-length third to Sulamani.
He has previously twice tasted big-race success at Goodwood. In 1999 he won the Group Three Veuve Clicquot Vintage Stakes and the next year he captured the Group Three Select Stakes.
"I'm quite keen to run Ekraar in the Festival Stakes depending on how he goes through his work this weekend. I've got to make sure that he's in good form - so far he seems very well."
