DANEHILL DIES IN ACCIDENT AT COOLMORE

Multiple champion sire Danehill suffered a fatal injury in an accident at Coolmore Stud this morning. The 17-year-old son of Danzig was being hand grazed in his paddock when the accident occurred.

Coolmore manager Christy Grassick commented: "Danehill was a phenomenal stallion and will be a big loss to the breeding industry worldwide."

Alternative mating plans are being arranged for the shareholders and clients whose mares are not yet in foal.

Danehill raced in the colours of Prince Khalid Abdulla and after winning the July Cup in 1989 was syndicated and retired to Coolmore. Last year he took over from stud companion Sadler¹s Wells as the world's leading sire of stakes winners and only last weekend was responsible for the first two home in the French 2,000 Guineas. His first sons at stud are already making a big impression led by Danehill Dancer who was the leading second season sire in Europe last year.

ULSTER DERBY APPROACHES

John Reid who partnered Dr Devious to win the 1992 Ulster Derby today visited the province to launch this year's renewal of the Ulster Derby at Down Royal Racecourse on Saturday, 21st June. The highlight of the Flat racing year in Northern Ireland, the Ulster Derby will have a new sponsor this year in the Charles Hurst. The company established in 1911 was acquired by the Lookers Group in 1996 and is Northern Ireland's largest Motor Dealership. The local Derby will be the most valuable ever run at Down Royal with a prize fund of Euros 75,000 next month. The Ulster born Rider said "I was very pleased to be asked. The course and facilities have changed drastically in recent years and the Management now attract top riders to the track on a regular basis."

Media Puzzle has been the highest profile winner in recent years as following collecting the Millennium Ulster Derby, the Dermot Weld trained winner recorded an historic second success for the trainer in the Melbourne Cup last year to supplement the victory of Vintage Crop in 1993.

Peter Gordon, Group Marketing Director of Charles Hurst said "We are delighted to expand our endorsement and sponsorship at Down Royal and thrilled to be associated with a showcase race, the Ulster Derby which regularly attracts the best horses and riders to the province."

INTRUM JUSTITIA TWO DAY MEETING AT STRATFORD RACECOURSE

The Intrum Justitia two-day meeting (Friday, May 30 & Saturday, May 31) is Stratford Racecourse's premier race meeting of the year and attracts a large crowd of around 15,000 people over the two days. There is over £160,000 added of prize money on offer in 14 races.

The meeting starts on Friday evening when the feature race is the Chase Publications sponsored John Corbet Cup, the end of the season Champion Novice Hunters' Steeplechase, run over 3 ½ miles with £17,500 of added prize money. This race is open to Irish Hunter Chasers and Point to Pointers. It is hoped that Irish connections will be encouraged to bring their horses to Stratford to compete for what is one of the most coveted of Hunter Chase crowns. On the Friday the English Point to Point fraternity will be present in large numbers to attend the 26th annual Point to Point Owners' and Riders Association luncheon.

Irish entries are also encouraged for the climax of the two day meeting, the 45th running of the Intrum Justitia (Horse and Hound) Final Champion Hunters Steeplechase, which is worth £30,000 this year. Hopefuls for this years renewal include Earthmover, who has had a terrific season to date; Macgeorge and Lord Atterbury who is looking to complete a fine treble after victories at Aintree and Cheltenham.

IRISH THOROUGHBRED NEWS

ALAMSHAR FOLLOWS IN HIGH CHAPARRAL, GALILEO AND SINNDAR'S PATH

Alamshar, narrowly beaten in the Ballysax Stakes on his seasonal return, came out on the right side of a photo-finish in a thrilling EUR130,000 Group 2 Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial Stakes at Leopardstown.

The talented son of Key Of Luck got the better of Aidan O'Brien's The Great Gatsby to win this prestigious derby trial by a head, the pair finishing clear of Brian Boru and Napper Tandy. Alamshar now looks set to try and emulate the success of the previous three 'Derrinstown' winners with victory at Epsom.

John Oxx, who trains Alamshar for owner/breeder HH Aga Khan, said, "That was very workman like and he will have to improve to win the (Epsom) Derby. He was not himself this week but he did not miss any work at home. I think it is highly likely that he will stay the Derby trip."

"I'm not disappointed with that, I came here thinking he might scramble home and that's just what he's done. Considering the build-up he had this week and the problem he has had, I'm perfectly happy, and he will definitely improve from this."

Runner-up The Great Gatsby, who was having his first run of the season, is still in the Derby picture according to Aidan O'Brien, who also saddled Brian Boru to finish third.

DALAKHANI REMAINS UNBEATEN AFTER LUPIN

Dalakhani accounted for two Aidan O'Brien runners as he stretched his unbeaten run to five in the Group 1 Prix Lupin at Longchamp.

The Aga Khan's Irish-bred once again ran out an impressive winner beating recent Group 2 winner Super Celebre in good style.

O'Brien's Alberto Giacometti (Sadler's Wells) finished less than two lengths off the pair in third place while his Leopardstown winner Balestrini (Danehill) was fourth.

Dalakhani, a son of Darshaan, was the leading two-year-old in France last year and is likely to go for the French Derby at Chantilly following this success.

SUPREME RABBIT (SOLID APPROACH) TAKES HONG KONG GRADE 2

Formerly known as Solid Approach, Supreme Rabbit was the winner of the Grade 2 Queen Mother Memorial Cup at Sha Tin on Saturday.

Trained in Ireland by Kevin Prendergast and owned by Castlemartin Stud, Supreme Rabbit was featured on the ITM DVD - 'The Irish Influence - 81 Irish Black type races 2002'. This son of Definite Article was a four time winner in Ireland, and contested three stakes races without reaching the frame.

Supreme Rabbit had an official rating of 103 when Peter Doyle, in conjunction with Dan O'Donnell, brokered a deal for him to be sold to Hong Kong.

Bred by Stephanie Von-Schilcher's Carrigbeg Stud, Supreme Rabbit has a 2yo half sister by Desert Style in training with Eddie Lynam and has a yearling half sister by Dr Devious. Supreme Rabbit was purchased by Frank Barry for Ir£24,000 at the Goffs Challenge Yearling Sale.

O'BRIEN RUNNERS CHASE HOME DANEHILL COLT IN FRENCH 2000 GUINEAS

Clodovil, by Danehill was another to maintain a fine unbeaten record in France when winning the Group 1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains at Longchamp.

Andre Fabre's Danehill colt just proved too strong for the fast finishing Aidan O'Brien-trained Catcher In The Rye, who gave Danehill a classic 1-2.

The Aidan O'Brien runner France, ridden by Michael Kinane, finished a fine fourth.

Catcher In The Rye came from well off the pace to finish second and may run next in the Entenmann's Irish 2000 Guineas at the Curragh.

CAT BELLING ON TOP IN GUINEAS TRIAL

Cat Belling ran out a surprise winner of the EUR80,000 Group 3 Derrinstown Stud 1,000 Guineas Trial at Leopardstown. Kevin Prendergast's Catrail filly, a winner over five furlongs at the Curragh last year, battled well to narrowly deny recent Tipperary winner Flamlet.

Prendergast was quick to nominate the Entenmann's Irish 1,000 Guineas at the Curragh later this month for his winner. Cat Belling was purchased by Frank Barry, who also purchased weekend Grade 2 winner Solid Approach (now called Supreme Rabbit), for Ir£34,000 at Tattersalls (Ireland) September Yearling Sale.

EUROPEAN RETURNS FOR MORE SUCCESS

The Con Collins-trained European, a winner on his only start as a two-year-old, made a winning return in the EUR50,000 Listed Amethyst Stakes at Leopardstown.

The son of Great Commotion beat Catcher In The Rye to win his maiden over six furlongs at the Curragh last June and showed plenty of determination when accounting for Mr. Houdini on his seasonal return.

Plans are uncertain for European, who was bred by Airlie Stud, he is not entered in the Irish 2,000 Guineas, but could be supplemented for the race.

HAMMIYA SO IMPRESSIVE IN CHESHIRE OAKS

Hammiya, bred in Ireland by Kilfrush Stud, added to her maiden success at Beverley last month when winning the Listed UPM-Kymmene Cheshire Oaks at Chester.

Clearly an improving filly, the daughter of Darshaan is not entered for the Vodafone Oaks at Epsom in early June, but she may well be supplemented for the race if she shows up well in the Lupe Stakes at Goodwood.

Hammiya won by a length from Halawanda, a daughter of Ashkalani, with Jim Bolger's Irish-raider Snippets coming from off the pace to finish third.

STARS ON COURSE FOR CURRAGH

Russian Rhythm and Six Perfections, the outstanding fillies of the season so far, look set to clash once again in the EUR400,000 Entenmann's Irish 1,000 Guineas at the Curragh on May 25.

First and an unlucky second in the first Classic of the season at Newmarket, both fillies are entered for the Curragh contest although Michael Stoute's 1,000 Guineas winner has an option of waiting for Royal Ascot.

The home challenge is likely to be led by Walayef and Danaskaya while a top-class field is also anticipated for the Entenmann's 2,000 Guineas on the previous day.

A strong cross-channel raiding party will be headed by Newmarket 2,000 Guineas runner-up Zafeen, the fourth-placed Tout Seul and fifth home Saturn.

IRISH PURCHASED 2YOS DOMINATE IN SPAIN

The Eddie Creighton trained 2yo Desert Guest led home a 1-2-3-4 for Irish breds in the first 2yo race of the season in Mijas. The winner is a son of Desert Story that was purchased at the 2002 Goffs Challenge Sale for EUR22,000, by Bobby O'Ryan. The following 3 places were filled by a pair of sons of Fumo Di Londra trained by Gustavo Bindella, with a Daggers Drawn filly in fourth.
