JOCKEY CLUB APPOINTS NIGEL CLARK AS A BHB DIRECTOR

Nigel Clark has been appointed by the Stewards of the Jockey Club to succeed Christopher Spence as one of the three Jockey Club Directors on BHB from July 2003.

Christopher Spence retires as Senior Steward of the Jockey Club on 1st July 2003 and at the same time steps down from being a Director of BHB, a position he has held since July 1998. Christopher's successor as Senior Steward, Julian Richmond-Watson, was appointed by the Stewards to the BHB Board in June 2000.

Nigel Clark has held numerous positions within the racing industry, many of which reflect his interest and understanding of National Hunt racing. He is a former Chairman of the BHB's Jump Pattern Panel and was Vice Chairman of National Hunt Review conducted in 2000-01.

He was President of the Racehorse Owners Association from 1984-86 and was elected to the Jockey Club in 1986. He also chaired the campaign for the introduction of Sunday racing and was a founder trustee of the British Racing School.

He acts as a steward on five racecourses and was a former Deputy Chairman of the Disciplinary Committee. Since 1997 he has been Chairman of the Kempton Park Committee.

AINTREE GEARS UP FOR LADIES NIGHT

Aintree Racecourse eagerly awaits its popular Ladies Night racemeeting on Friday, May 16, and promises a great night for everyone attending.

Over 7,000 badges have been sold for the evening that will see international chart-topping girl group, Atomic Kitten, perform after racing at 9:15pm.

Race organisers are also delighted to welcome back Liverpool designer store, Wade Smith, who will be staging four complimentary Fashion Shows as part of the entertainment throughout the evening.

Wade Smith was recently involved with the racecourse, sponsoring the inaugural running of the highly-successful style contest on Ladies Day of the Martell Cognac Grand National Meeting this year.

Each of the shows will be staged in a purpose-built marquee structure and will be limited to 500 people per show. Visitors to the racecourse will be able to view shows from 5:30pm, then every hour until 8:30pm.

Charles Barnett, Managing Director, said today: "We are delighted with the advance ticket sales for the meeting but would still urge people to book their tickets beforehand.

"The performance by Atomic Kitten after racing has added further interest to the racemeeting and will be a great way to end a great evening's racing."

The first race, the SIS Digital Novices' Chase, is run at 6pm with the last, the Radio City Novices' Hurdle, due off at 8.50pm. The feature even is the £15,000-added Samantha Holdsworth Handicap Hurdle (7.10pm) which has attracted 28 entries including ones from top trainers Nicky Henderson, Jonjo O'Neill, Tim Easterby, Venetia Williams, Martin Pipe and Paul Nicholls.

Tickets are still available and cost £15, accompanied children aged 16 and under gain free entry. To make a booking, telephone the ticket line on 0151 522 2929.

ANOTHER SATURDAY AT THIRSK

Thirsk's third successive Saturday meeting takes place this weekend (17 May), when the seven-race programme is scheduled to begin at 2.10 p.m.

The principal race is the £20,000 Boltby Classified Stakes, a contest over one mile for three-year-olds, while a pair of £14,000-added races for sprinters are also featured on a quality, competitive card - The Tote Exacta Handicap Stakes (six furlongs) and The Rectangle Group Handicap Stakes (a contest for three-year-olds over the minimum distance of five furlongs).

The latter race is supported by The Rectangle Group, as they sponsor for the first time at Thirsk. The company markets and manages financial services schemes for major clients such as Barclaycard, and will have a stand at the course on Saturday explaining the services provided. The Group's chairman and chief executive respectively, Paul Sellers and Nik Ingham hope to run the horse they jointly own, Rectangle in the race. The three-year-old, trained at Sessay by David Nicholls, won his maiden race last year at Thirsk.

The European Breeders Fund support the opening race, a contest for two-year-olds - The Carlton Miniott Novice Fillies' Stakes (five furlongs), while The Feathers Hotel Helmsley Handicap Stakes and The White Swan Ampleforth Maiden Stakes are further races for three-year-olds.

There's a children's entertainer and face-painting in the Family Enclosure, while the musical entertainment is provided by the Bob Jones Ragtime Band.

FAMILY SUNDAY MEETING AT RIPON

Ripon's 2003 Sunday Meeting takes place this weekend (18 May), when the action at Yorkshire's 'Garden Racecourse' - one of the most beautiful venues in British racing - is scheduled to start at 2.10 p.m.

With the emphasis firmly on family entertainment, there's a wide variety of attractions for children centred upon the two playgrounds in the Tattersalls and Course Enclosures. These include electric kiddies go-karts, The Fantastic Fantasia Fun House, bouncy castles etc. As usual at Ripon, accompanied children under 16 years of age are admitted free of charge into all enclosures.

The two feature races on Sunday are The Tote Trifecta Sprint Fillies' Rated Stakes (a Showcase Handicap over six furlongs) and The Middleham Trainers Association Handicap Stakes over one mile and a quarter.

Bush and Associates - a Halifax-based firm of independent insurance advisers - sponsor for the first time at Ripon, supporting a contest for Maiden two-year-olds over six furlongs.

Musical entertainment during the afternoon is courtesy of The Ripon City Band, while the course's permanent giant screen will provide racegoers with an even closer view of proceedings.
