SUMMER NATIONAL AT UTTOXETER

Uttoxeter will stage the second £50,000 Britannia Building Society Summer National, a handicap chase over 4m 0.5f on Sunday, July 1.

The inaugral race was won last year by Berlin Blue and organisers are hoping for another successful meeting this year.

Lisa Needham, Uttoxeter's Commercial Executive, said: "Uttoxeter was one of the original courses to stage Sunday racing and has taken a forward thinking and innovative approach to the marketing of its summer fixtures. One of our long-term aims was to develop a Sunday Summer jump race meeting as competitive as any staged during the traditional Autumn/Winter period. This we have achieved, with the tremendous support of sponsors Britannia Building Society."

"This racemeeting has quickly become one our most popular, catering for a diverse audience. The extra entertainment we provide on Sundays has given families the chance to enjoy the racing experience whilst offering plenty of alternative attractions for children. We hope that by offering free admission for children under 16 and free parking for all, we provide a great value day out for the whole family."

EXCELLENT SALISBURY ACTION ON MAY 17

Following on from the very successful first fixture of the season on Sunday, May 6, Salisbury holds its second raceday of 2001 on Thursday, May 17, when there will be a quality programme on offer to tempt racegoers.

The feature race of the day is the £15,000-added EUROPEAN BREEDERS FUND DURNFORD CLASSIFIED STAKES (3.40pm), an excellent mile-and-a-half contest for three-year-olds rated 0-100. Last year this event fell to the Rod Millman-trained Optimaite and the prize money has gone up 50% compared to the £10,000 added offered in 1999.

Salisbury is delighted to once again stage a contest in the Gerrard (formerly Capel Cure Sharp) series for two-year-olds.

Runners in the £5,000-added GERRARD MAIDEN STAKES (3.10pm) over five furlongs will be eligible for a £100,000 bonus if they manage to win two races in the nine-strong series and then go on to land the Gerrard Bonus Final, a nursery, which takes place at Newbury on October 27.

Mick Channon's Pan Jammer was triumphant in this contest last year and progressed to success in the Group Three Anglesey Stakes at the Curragh in Ireland.

Gerrard will also be offering a £50 prize to the lad or lass responsible for the best turned-out horse at Salisbury, while the lad or lass responsible for the winner will receive £100.

Action gets under way with the NETHERHAMPTON MAIDEN FILLIES' STAKES (2.05pm) over a mile and a quarter - a race which has divided for the past two years, providing an extra contest. If this happens on May 17, then the first race will take place at 1.35pm. Newmarket trainer Sir Michael Stoute has provided the winner of three of the four divisions run in 1999 and 2000.

The next race is the DEL AND JAKE PARTNERSHIP HANDICAP (2.35pm), over a mile, which is sponsored by New Forest Foods Ltd for the first time.

The remaining three races on the card are the TRYON HANDICAP (4.10pm), a seven-furlong contest for horses rated 0-80 and the REDENHAM CLAIMING STAKES (4.40pm) over the same distance, while the day ends with the LEVY BOARD HANDICAP (5.15pm) over a mile and a half.

Jeremy Martin, Clerk of the Course and General Manager at Salisbury said: "Considering the disappointing weather, we were very satisfied with our opening fixture on Sunday, May 6, which saw a crowd of 8,000 and record takings in the bars and record Tote betting turnover.

"The course at Salisbury is recovering well from the extremely wet winter and we are hoping for continued dry weather. The May 17 raceday will provide some exciting action, with promising horses and top jockeys on show."

Admission prices on Thursday, May 17, are Members £15, Tattersalls £10 and Course £5. Accompanied children under 16 are admitted FREE and car parking is FREE. A supervised creche will be available. Salisbury Racecourse prides itself on providing a friendly atmosphere and excellent catering.

IRONBRIDGE REMOVED FROM HANNON

In a suprise move, Craven Stakes winner King's Ironbridge has been removed from Richard Hannon's yard after a disagreement between Hannon and owner Terry Johnsey.

Johnsey was reportedly unhappy with the ride given to the King's Theatre colt by Dane O'Neill in Saturday's Sagitta 2000 Guineas, when he finished down the field in tenth.

Hannon told today's Times: "I told him to take the horse away.

"We had a disagreement after the race, a dispute over running and riding.

"My view was that the horse was drawn badly and Dane had no option but to stay out wide, but the owner is entitled to his opinion."

King's Ironbridge will now join Lambourn handler Brian Meehan.

Commenting on her new acquisition, Meehan said: "I'm looking forward to training him - he's a lovely horse. The circumstances are none of my business and I want to keep out of that.

"I shall look through his entries, but I do know he's in the St James's Palace Stakes at Ascot and that will be an option."

NEW ZEALAND BLOODSTOCK NEWS

Windsor Park Stud's Leading First Season Sire Woodborough followed his excellent start in the Southern Hemisphere with one in the North, when his son Woodsmoke took the EBF maiden at Brighton, and his other runner Little Woodstock filled the third place berth. This followed another of Woodborough's first progeny to race, To the Woods, who was recently placed in a maiden race at racing's headquarters, Newmarket.

The son of Woodman looks certain to attain premiership honours in New Zealand as he is currently leading the First Season Sire's table by a considerable margin with stakeswinner Shinnecock his best performed runner so.

A smart juvenile himself, Woodborough took the Gr.3 Anglesey Stakes at two-years, was runner-up in both the Gr.1 Phoenix Stakes and the Middle Park Stakes and was also third in the Gr.1 Prix de la Salamandre.

SPINNING WORLD DELIVERS

European Champion Miler Spinning World, who stood last season at Windsor Park Stud, has commenced his stud career in the same trail blazing fashion that he started his own race career when his first progeny to hit the racetrack, Tendulkar, won impressively first time up at the Curragh in Ireland. Tendulkar, a $US200,000 Keeneland July Sales yearling purchase is out of the Alleged mare Romanette and showed brilliant acceleration coming from off the pace to win decisively in the hands of champion jockey Mick Kinane.
