ROYAL HUNT CUP & WOKINGHAM ATTRACT TRIPLE FUGURE ENTRIES

100 horses have been entered for the Royal Hunt Cup, to be run on Wednesday, 20th June, while there is currently a field of 122 hopefuls for the Wokingham on Friday, 22nd June.

Interesting names among the entries for the Hunt Cup, over the straight mile, include this year's Lincoln winner NIMELLO, DUKE OF MODENA, winner of the seven furlong Tote Trifecta Handicap at Ascot last August, and course specialist SUGARFOOT.

There are seven entries from Ireland, including representatives from the powerful stables of Jim Bolger and Dermot Weld, while Godolphin's high class entries, SLIP STREAM and ZONING, can't fail to catch the eye.

Sir Michael Stoute, responsible for Caribbean Monarch, the successful favourite in last year's race, could be looking to follow up with TOUGH SPEED and fellow Newmarket trainer Henry Cecil, whose record at Royal Ascot is second to none, could be doubly represented with PRINCE OF MY HEART and TARBOUSH.

HARMONIC WAY and DEEP SPACE, the two most recent winners of the Wokingham, feature among the entries for this year's renewal of the showpieces Spring handicap of Royal Ascot week.

The rock solid NICE ONE CLARE, fourth in last year's Wokingham and subsequently placed in plenty of big handicaps throughout the summer, is sure to be a popular choice while the high class MISRAAH, rejuvenated by the step down to sprinting, would be interesting if allowed to take his chance.

Sprint handicap king David Nicholls is responsible for no less than 12 entries, the pick of which could be ROYAL RESULT and PEPPERDINE.

"These are always highly competitive and popular races and no doubt there will be plenty of ante-post interest in the run up to Royal Ascot," said Nick Cheyne, Clerk of the Course at Ascot.

"The Wokingham should be an interesting rematch between Harmonic Way and Nice One Clare although, as always, there will be countless others lining up with a big chance."

UTTOXETER & CHEPSTOW RACECOURSES HIT FURTHER BY FOOT AND MOUTH

The Uttoxeter and Chepstow Racecourse Executive are disappointed to announce that the British Horseracing Board has abandoned their meetings scheduled for Thursday 7th June (Uttoxeter and Chepstow) and Thursday 14th June (Uttoxeter).

The loss of these racemeetings has been caused by delays in the testing procedure required before the courses can be removed from their respective 3km protection zones. Previous indications from MAFF had given the courses hope that the results of the tests would be received in time for racing to go ahead. However, MAFF have confirmed that this information will now not be received until 4th June (for Chepstow) and 9th June (Uttoxeter), at the earliest.

Rod Street, Managing Director of Uttoxeter and non Executive Director of Chepstow Racecourse said:

"Both Uttoxeter and Chepstow Racecourse have suffered particularly badly during the foot and mouth outbreak and have now lost a total of 17 racemeetings this year. The fact that this situation is continuing is incredibly frustrating, not only for the racecourses themselves, but for all their customers.

We have done everything we possibly can to get racing started again at Uttoxeter and Chepstow, including establishing that MAFF has the power to prevent us from racing should the British Horseracing Board not do so.

As such, we are truly in the hands of MAFF and are now relying on their speed and efficiency to remove us from the protection zones in order that we can get back to racing as soon as possible ".

Assuming that no further delays in the testing procedure are encountered, racing at Uttoxeter resumes on Sunday 1st July, English Summer National day and at Chepstow on Friday 15th June.

AYR'S EXCITING FLAT SEASON GETS UNDER WAY

Ayr's first scheduled Flat meeting of 2001 takes place on Thursday, May 31, and Friday, June 1, and the season promises to be an exciting one.

After a successful Gala Group Scottish Grand National meeting at Ayr, which saw a 3% increase in attendance and a £30,000 rise in Tote betting turnover, preparations are now well under way for the official start of Ayr's Flat season.

Although there was a Flat fixture at Ayr on May 11, that was an extra one arranged by the British Horseracing Board to make up for the large number of abandonments earlier in the year.

In all there will be 14 days of Flat racing at Ayr during the year, with plenty of quality action on offer and top jockeys riding.

Highlights of the season include the Group Three Scottish Classic, Scotland's only Group race, which takes place at the Glasgow Fair meeting on Monday, July 16.

This fine race has been won by some very useful performers in the past, including last year's victor, the Luca Cumani-trained Endless Hall, who has since gone on to success in the £1.2 million Group One Singapore Airlines International Cup at Kranji on May 12. Ayr is again staging its popular evening fixture, which will take place this year on Friday, August 3.

The biggest Flat occasion of the year at Ayr and in Scotland as a whole is the Western Meeting, which runs from Thursday, September 20 through to Saturday, September 22, 2001 The highlight the famous meeting is the Ayr Gold Cup, Europe's richest sprint handicap, which is being sponsored by the Tote for the first time in 2001. The Tote will also be supporting the Ayr Silver Cup, the consolation race for horses eliminated from the Ayr Gold Cup, and the valuable Ayrshire Handicap.

Thursday, May 31, sees a six-race programme on offer, with the richest race of the afternoon being the £13,000-added EUROPEAN BREEDERS FUND CROSSHILL CLASSIFIED 90 STAKES (3.20pm) over a mile. There is also a six-race programme on Friday, June 1, where the highlight of the card is the £10,000-added "DASHING WHITE SERGEANT" HANDICAP over a mile-and-a-quarter. On both days the first race is at 2.20pm with the gates opening at 12 noon.

Tickets for all meetings at Ayr can be booked on 01292 264179 or online at ayr-racecourse.co.uk. Admission prices for May 31 and June 1 are £7 for the combined Club/Grandstand enclosure. Admission for students and OAPs costs £4 on production of ID and accompanied children under 16 are admitted FREE. All car and coach parking is also FREE.

Richard Pridham, Ayr's General Manager and Clerk of the Course said: "All of us at Ayr are looking forward to the official start of the Flat season with our two-day meeting on Thursday, May 31 and Friday, June 1.

"Last year we saw some terrific racing at Ayr, and pleasing levels of attendance. A day's racing is excellent value for money and good entertainment for all the family.

"With a new sponsor for our biggest Flat race, the Tote Ayr Gold Cup, we are hoping for another successful season."

NICHOLLS OPEN DAY OFF

Trainer Paul Nicholls has abandoned his open day, which was scheduled to take place in August, due to the foot and mouth epidemic.

Explaining his decision, Nicholls said: "It is very unfortunate but my yard is set in the middle of a rural farming community and, in the light of the current situation with foot and mouth, I am cancelling this year's open day but I intend to hold it again next year.

"The Bath and West show which is held just up the road from us has cancelled and it would just not be fair to have thousands of people converging on the area, especially as Somerset has remained relatively foot and mouth free."
