TATTERSALLS HOUGHTON CLASSIC DOUBLE
ROSE GYPSY and ROYAL DRAGON completed a memorable Houghton Classic double when landing the Dubai Poule d'Essai des Pouliches at Longchamp (French 1000 guineas), and the Mehl Mulhens-Rennen (German 2000 Guineas) at Cologne respectively.
ROSE GYPSY, owned by Mrs John Magnier and trained at Ballydoyle in Ireland by Aidan O'Brien, was running for the second time in less than a week and held off the strong late challenges of BANKS HILL, and Tattersalls October bargain LETHALS LADY who belied not only her 5,000 guineas purchase price, but also her starting price of 78-1, by finishing third two heads behind the winner.
ROSE GYPSY is yet another top class performer bred by the Oppenheimer family at their Hascombe Stud in Cheveley. By GREEN DESERT, she was knocked down to Demi O' Byrne at the 1999 Houghton Yearling Sale for 115,000 guineas and is the fourth individual Group 1 winner to date from what is already looking a vintage Houghton.
At Cologne five minutes earlier ROYAL DRAGON continued trainer Andreas Schutz's phenomenal run of Group race successes, and completed a Houghton German Guineas double following the success last weekend of 240,000 guineas Houghton purchase DAKHLA OASIS in the German 1000 Guineas.
ROYAL DRAGON's win was also a major achievement for owner Helmut von Finck, and bloodstock agent Rudiger Alles. Both DAKHLA OASIS and ROYAL DRAGON are owned by von Finck and both were purchased on his behalf by Alles of German International Bloodstock.
By DANEHILL out of CARMELIZED, ROYAL DRAGON was consigned at the 1999 Houghton Yearling Sale by Barronstown Stud and was knocked down to Alles for 250,000 guineas.
