THE VALUE BETTING COLUMN EVERY SATURDAY
LINGFIELD, SATURDAY, MAY 12, 2001
GOING: GOOD TO SOFT (good in places) Bright
BP= best odds of Coral, William Hill, Ladbrokes and Coral
3.10pm £15,000-added DURTNELL HANDICAP, 7F
1) (6) 144614- Duke of Modena 4-10-0 Toby Balding Steve Carson (3)
Consistent performer who had a very good campaign in 2000, winning on four occasions, including the competitive Tote Trifecta Handicap at the Ascot Festival in September. Won first time out last year, but the handicapper has probably caught up with him. Appears to go on any ground.
BP=10 Hills, Ladbrokes
2) (13) 12021-0 Grey Eminence (FR) 4-10-0 Richard Hannon Jimmy Fortune
Useful performer who managed to score twice last season and ran consistently well for most of the campaign. Didn’t run too badly when unplaced behind Primo Valentino on seasonal reappearance in the Listed Abernant Stakes at Newmarket. Won’t mind the ground but looks vulnerable under his burden here.
BP=20 Hills
3) (10) 132/30-2 Nothing Daunted 4-9-12 Ed Dunlop Frankie Dettori
Lightly-raced colt whose only success to date came in a Goodwood maiden in 1999. Ran very well in some competitive handicaps last season and made a very encouraging seasonal debut when second in a 7f handicap at the Craven meeting. Chance must be respected but others offer better value in this competitive affair.
BP=5 Coral
4) (14) 533010- Big Future 4-9-8 Amanda Perrett Richard Hughes
Course and distance winner who is still relatively lightly raced. Could still potentially show some improvement but looks to be plenty high enough in the handcap on what he has actually achieved.
BP=8 Tote, Hills, Coral
5) (9) 2/315-56 Desert Knight 5-9-6 Jeremy Noseda Kieren Fallon
Lightly raced five-year-old who would have a chance if coming back to something like his best. Ran quite well last time out when sixth behind Fire Dome in a conditions event at Warwick. Jockey booking could be significant and he looks to be good value.
BP= 14 ALL FIRMS
6) (16) 60110- Border Subject 4-9-6 Roger Charlton Pat Eddery
Started off last season with some high hopes (close sixth in Wood Ditton at Newmarket) and went on to land a maiden and a rated handicap. Flopped behind Duke Of Modena on final start last year but potentially could show improvement and stable is in good form.
BP=9 Tote, Hills
7) (12) 12/2010- Sir Effendi (IRE) 5-9-5 Marcus Tregoning Richard Hills
Well-bred horse who has some good form at his best, such as when landing a conditions event at Chepstow last year. However doesn’t appear to be the most consistent performer and stable is not exactly flying. Best form on firmer ground.
BP=22 Ladbrokes
8) (11) 000-003 Kathology (IRE) 4-9-4 Mark Johnston Michael Roberts
Showed signs of a return to form last time out when third a staying-on third over 6f at Newmarket last week. Has never won over this trip but gives the impression he should last home. Goes on any ground.
BP=14 Tote
9) (8) 0004-32 Bon Ami (IRE) 5-9-0 Ken Ivory Chris Catlin (5)
Quite a consistent performer who can usually be relied upon to run his race, even though he hasn’t managed to win since 1998. Very good effort last time out at Newmarket when second to Marsad over 6f. Slowing slipping on to a nice mark and decent apprentice booked.
BP=10 Tote
10) (2) 004-400 Premier Baron 6-8-11 Phil McEntee Philip Robinson
Fairly useful at best but isn’t really the most consistent sort. Hasn’t really sparkled on his last two outings and only makes limited appeal.
BP=25 Coral
11) (7) 655436- Zucchero 5-8-11 David Arbuthnot Richard Quinn
Consistent sort who doesn’t win that often. However, he does stay 7f well and has been successful over the course and distance. Worry is that his best form has come when the ground has been on the fast side.
BP=18 Tote
12) (4) 23111-0 Hand Chime 4-8-11 William Haggas Shane Kelly
Did very well last season when recording five successes. Didn’t run too badly when unplaced on seasonal reappearance at Thirsk. Should strip fitter here and stable does well with its handicappers. Still has scope for imrovement and should go well.
BP= 11 Coral
13) (17) 1030-00 Noble Pursuit 4-8-11 Terry Mills Lee Carter
Has some fairly useful form at his best put his two efforts so far this season have been pretty dismal. Passed over.
BP=33 Ladbrokes, Hills, Coral
14) (18) 1-03100 Social Contract 4-8-10b Sylvester Kirk Paul Dobbs (3)
Successful in decent contest at Newmarket last Autumn and ran fairly well on the all-weather over the winter. Didn’t show much in Newbury Spring Cup last time and looks to have it all to do here.
BP=33 Hills
15) (5) 1/400-0 Pax 4-8-8 Pip Payne Willie Ryan
Lightly-raced colt whose one success came in a decent maiden at Newmarket in 1999. Has shown next to nothing lately and is impossible to fancy here.
BP=66 ALL FIRMS
16) (3) 614340- Honest Borderer 6-8-7 John Dunlop Gary Carter
Represents the in-form John Dunlop yard. Course winner who is reasonably consistant but has only ever won twice in his life. Looks fairly exposed but given the form of the stable, none of their runners can be totally ruled out at present.
BP=14 Ladbrokes
17) (1) 100000- Zietzig (IRE) 4-8-5 Karl Burke Kevin Darley
Caused a bit of a shock when successful in at decent handicap at Glorious Goodwood last season. Didn’t show very much after that win and difficult to make at case for him here.
BP=28 Ladbrokes, Coral
18) 202//-5 Thrust 5-8-3 William Muir Martin Dwyer
Had some decent juvenile form back in 1998 (second to Beat All on one occasion) but looks to have had problems since. Ran very well considering his 2.5 year absence when fifth at Kempton last month and a reproduction of that effort would make him go close here. Worry is the “bounce” effect on his second run after a long absence.
BP=16 Tote
SUMMARY
A tricky affair where it is hard to fancy anything with confidence. Preference is given to the 14/1 available about DESERT KNIGHT who has class on his day and showed signs of a return to form last time.
GOOD LUCK
