NATIONAL TRAINERS FEDERATION PAYS RESPECTS TO THE LATE FRED WINTER
The National Trainers Federation paid tribute today to Fred Winter, who died early this morning, aged 77.
It is impossible to overstate the respect and admiration with which Fred Winter was viewed not only by trainers but also by everyone who followed racing. His true qualities were demonstrated as much as ever in the fortitude and good humour he showed in the face of severe disability following the untimely accident that ended his training career.
Rupert Arnold, Chief Executive of the NTF, said today, "Fred Winter was a master horseman and his name was a byword for professionalism and integrity both as a jockey and a trainer. He will be greatly missed by everyone in racing and will be mourned by the whole training community."
EUROPEAN FIRST AS TATTERSALLS BREEZE UP TO BE POSTED ONLINE
Tattersalls will break new ground for a European Breeze Up Sale this year with each individual ‘breeze' being posted on the Tattersalls website, http://www.tattersalls.com/,
within hours of the breezes being completed on the morning of Tuesday 13 April. With the two day sale commencing at 5.00pm on Wednesday 14 April, potential buyers throughout the world will be able to download a high quality video of each individual breeze at the click of a mouse.
Tattersalls Marketing Director Jimmy George said: "Some innovations fall very much into the gimmick category, but this will be of enormous benefit to potential purchasers who are unable to attend the sale in person allowing them television quality viewing of individual lots, wherever they are in the world, whenever they want. We anticipate that the breeze up in its entirety will be available to be viewed on the Tattersalls website a full 24 hours prior to the start of the Sale, which would not have been possible under the old sale format when the two year olds did their main breeze on the morning prior to being sold. With the new format all lots will have just the one breeze on Tuesday 13 April, with the sale taking place on the evenings of Wednesday 14, and Thursday 15.
The video files will be in MPEG format, and will be viewable using the vast majority of video software including ‘Windows Media Player' and ‘Real Player'.
ROA APPOINTS NEW MARKETING MANAGER
The Racehorse Owners Association has appointed Ron Snaith as Marketing Manager, a new position created within the organisation.
Snaith has over 20 years' experience in the horseracing industry. He joined the publishing services division of Weatherbys in 1984 where he was instrumental in the launch and production of The Stallion Book, as well as being responsible for the marketing of the company's other bloodstock publications and their breeders' on-line service.
His most recent role within racing was as General Manager of Racing Pages, a Hull-based press agency supplying page-ready racecards to 10 British and Irish national newspapers and over 20 regional titles, as well as racing data and form comments to Weatherbys for on-course racecards, SIS and bookmakers worldwide.
Announcing the appointment, Michael Harris, Chief Executive of the Racehorse Owners Association, said: "I am very pleased to welcome Ron to the team at the ROA. His knowledge of the industry will be invaluable and we are looking to him to build on the tremendous success we have had in recent years when we have increased our membership from around 4,200 in 1997 to the current level of 6,800. The ROA offers great value for members and this is a message we need to convey strongly, especially to new owners as they enter the world of horseracing."
Chris Deuters, President of the ROA, added: "There are exciting times ahead within the Racehorse Owners Association and Ron will undoubtedly be a great asset to Michael and the enthusiastic team we have at our London office."
