THERE’S MORE IN 2004 AT RIPON

Having been awarded the accolade of ‘Best Small Racecourse in the North’ by members of the influential Racegoers Club, Ripon embarks upon its 15-day campaign on the Flat in 2004 with a later starting time and total prize money maintained at around £900,000.

The opening meeting features the second running of The Ripon Silver Bowl Fillies’ Stakes - a £30,000 Listed race for three-year-old fillies - as each raceday contains at least one race offering prize money of at least £15,000.

The William Hill Great St. Wilfrid Handicap Stakes on Saturday, August 14 continues to be Ripon’s most valuable race of the season with £50,000 on offer in this famous race acknowledged as being one of the north’s most competitive sprint handicaps.

The course’s established Listed race, The Champion Two-Years-Old Trophy is once again the feature race on Bank Holiday Monday (August 30).

There’s a trio of evening meetings during the summer; The Ripon Spring Festival Evening on Wednesday, May 26; the Mid-Summer Evening Meeting on Wednesday, June 16 and the fixture on Monday, July 5.

The annual ‘Ladies Day’ - incorporating a fashion show in a marquee and a ‘best-dressed lady’ competition - takes place against the backdrop of ‘Ladies Day’ at Royal Ascot on Thursday, June 17, while Ripon’s popular Sunday fixture on May 16, complements the five Saturday afternoon programmes during 2004.

The 15th annual Institute of Journalists Royal Charter Charity Meeting is held on Saturday, July 17, while Black Sheep Brewery of Masham extended their support of racing at Ripon by sponsoring a total of four races - May 25 & 26 (evening) and August 2 & 31. It is hoped that this quartet of races can be linked into a series with an overall prize for stable staff.

New sponsors include the betting online service, Betrescue.com, who support a race on the final day of the season – Saturday, September 25, while racehorse owner Barry Pemberton sponsors The Ripon Rowels Handicap Stakes on Bank Holiday Monday, August 30, to celebrate his 60th Birthday.

Access to facilities for disabled racegoers has been improved, while the Owners and Trainers Bar has been extended above part of the saddling boxes, overlooking the pre-parade ring, with complimentary tea and coffee available to those connections with runners in the day.

New showers have been installed in the Weighing Room and the fire alarm system has been upgraded.

The permanent giant screen in the centre of the course continues to be an important part of the race-day experience and racecards will be in full colour, enabling racegoers to identify the runners more easily.

Ripon’s top Trainer and Jockey awards continue to be supported by Glenfiddich Whisky, with last season’s winners being Tim Easterby and Darryll Holland respectively.

TATTERSALLS RECORD

The European record for a Breeze Up Sale was smashed on the opening day of the Tattersalls Breeze Up Sale yesterday evening when Japanese owner Fusao Sekiguchi purchased a son of FUSAICHI PEGASUS, the Kentucky Derby winning Champion he purchased and raced, for 500,000 guineas.

The previous record, set on the opening day of this sale last year at 260,000 guineas was soon eclipsed with Noriyuki Arakawa, buying on behalf of Toshikatsu Fujita's Toyo Racing Club taking the bidding to 300,000 guineas before Irish bloodstock agent Bobby O'Ryan continued the frenetic pace. However, it was Yukari Sekiguchi who made the final successful bid of 500,000 guineas on behalf of her father in law.

The colt, who had breezed sensationally the previous day and who also had a world class pedigree to match, represented a massive pinhooking triumph for Bansha House Stables principal Con Marnane who had purchased the colt out of Group 1 winner LYRIC FANTASY for €(euros)80,000 as a yearling.

LYRIC FANTASY, who was Champion two year old filly in Europe in 1992, won the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes as well as the Group 3 Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot, and is a half sister to dual Group 1 winning sprinter and top class stallion ROYAL APPLAUSE as well as Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes winner IN COMMAND.

The new record price and strong trade overall saw 64 lots sold for 3,242,000 guineas at an average of 50,656 guineas and a median of 32,500 guineas. These new figures represented rises of 37%, 52% and 35%. The opening session saw a total of 5 lots break the six-figure barrier.

The second highest priced lot for the evening also surpassed last year's record price as Patrick Cooper of the BBA Ireland purchased a son of MONTJEU for 270,000 guineas.

Initial interest in the colt out of the Irish 1000 Guineas winner CLASSIC PARK came from local bloodstock agent Gill Richardson as well as JS Company's Tadashi Watahiki before Taki Murayama of Murayama Bloodstock and Cooper took up the running, taking the price well beyond six figures before Cooper prevailed at 270,000 guineas.

The sale represented another spectacular pinhooking success, this time for Willie Browne's Mocklershill Stables after being purchased as a yearling by Margaret O'Toole for €(euros)130,000. Cooper indicated that the colt would go to French based trainer John Hammond, who trained the colt's sire MONTJEU at his Chantilly base.

Earlier in the evening a son of Darley stallion MACHIAVELLIAN set the pace when Taki Murayama purchased the colt out of the Listed winning and Group placed DIESIS mare ARTISTIC BLUE for 190,000 guineas.

Malcolm Bastard consigned the colt who was originally purchased as a foal at the Tattersalls December Foal Sale for 100,000 guineas by Irish bloodstock agent Dermott Farrington. Murayama, acting on behalf of owner Tetsu Takashima who had to see off the efforts of Manton trainer John Gosden.

Takashima is no stranger to success at the Tattersalls Breeze Up Sale, having purchased the high class Stakes winning and Group placed POLISH PRECEDENT colt HYUMA in the sale in 2002.

Keeneland to Host Memorial Service for Robert Sangster

America’s Keeneland Racecourse will host a memorial service for prominent owner-breeder Robert Sangster, who died last week at his London home following a battle with cancer.

The memorial service will be held on Monday, April 19 at 11 a.m. in the second floor of the Keeneland Clubhouse overlooking the paddock.

Sangster was a highly successful owner and breeder in Europe who made international headlines in the 1970s and 1980s for his record-setting purchases at the Keeneland sales.

In 1985, he and a group of partners purchased Seattle Dancer for $13.1 million dollars in 1985 - a world record that stands to this day.

He raced Epsom Derby winners The Minstrel (1977) and Golden Fleece (1982) and two-time Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Alleged, all purchased at Keeneland. He also raced more than 800 stakes winners, more than 100 of which were Grade or Group one winners.

Contributions in memoriam for Mr. Sangster may be made to:
