RIPON STAGES NEW LISTED RACE ON THURSDAY

A new Listed race at Ripon, The Ripon Silver Bowl Fillies' Stakes, dominates proceedings at Yorkshire's 'Garden Racecourse' on Maundy Thursday (17 April), when racing is scheduled to start at 2.05 p.m.

With prize money of £32,000, The Ripon Silver Bowl Fillies' Stakes is a sprint race over six furlongs for three-year-old fillies, and now compliments Ripon's established Listed race on August Bank Holiday Monday, The Champion Two-Year-Olds Trophy.

The Ripon 'Cock O' The North' Handicap Stakes, a £15,000-added contest for three-year-olds over one mile is also featured on Thursday; the race title refers to the Northern Flat Jockeys' Championship, The 'Cock O' The North'. North Yorkshire-based Kevin Darley was once again the northern champion, with 112 winners during the 2002 Turf season. The competition is supported by Cocked Hat Farm Foods Ltd. of Ripon - regular sponsors of racing at their local racecourse.

The opening race, The Sharow Maiden Stakes, a contest for two-year-olds, continues to be supported by The European Breeders Fund.

Action from Newmarket's Craven Meeting and the Jumps fixture at Cheltenham will be shown 'live' on the course's permanent giant screen.

BEVERLEY'S SEASON STARTS ON WEDNESDAY

The first of Beverley's scheduled 19 days' racing on the Flat this season takes place on Wednesday (16 April), when racing is due to start at 2.05 p.m.

The principal race is The Philip Grundy 50 Today Classified Stakes, a contest for sprinters over five furlongs which offers prize money of £14,000. Philip is a long-standing owner with Malton-based trainer, Nigel Tinkler, whose stable could be represented in the race by Henry Hall.

The New Look Members Enclosure Stakes, a handicap contest over one mile and a quarter, and The Memento For Every Winner Handicap Stakes over the extended seven furlongs, are also featured on Wednesday.

The giant ToteVision will enable racegoers to follow all of the action on Wednesday, including racing during the afternoon from the other meetings in Britain - Newmarket and Cheltenham.

GREAT LEIGHS RACECOURSE SCHEME HELPS PLANNERS SCOOP GOVERNMENT AWARD

The Great Leighs racecourse proposal has contributed towards Chelmsford Borough Council's success in winning a prestigious government award.

The council now has "Beacon" status, an accolade from the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM) for "continued excellence in providing quality in the built environment."

One of the major schemes cited was the proposed redevelopment of Essex County Showground, between Chelmsford and Braintree, into the Great Leighs racecourse. Great Leighs' owner John Holmes met representatives of the ODPM to describe how the joint efforts of planning officers and his own professional team culminated in approval for this ambitious scheme. Planning officers applauded, in particular, the superb architecture of the grandstand building, designed by HOK Sport+Event+Venue.

Planning difficulties have beset other racecourse developments. Great Leighs obtained planning permission in January 2002, ratified by the Secretary of State three weeks later. It is believed to be the only new all-weather racecourse scheme currently being considered by the British Horseracing Board to have safely completed all the lengthy local planning processes. Great Leighs is set to break the soil for its 40 million development, pending a successful application for fixtures to the BHB.

John Holmes's scheme has already received plaudits from the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment, which listed it among the four schemes of "potential national importance" that had most impressed it in 2002.

The Council's Beacon citation acknowledges that "Chelmsford demonstrates a full commitment to achieving a high quality built environment, and an understanding of the arrangements necessary to achieve this." The Council, which was short-listed from 200 applications, will now share its innovative ideas with others in local government and with partner organisations in both the public and private sector.
