ARKADIAN HERO TO STAND AT STUD IN NEW ZEALAND

A group two winner who acquitted himself well against some of the greatest international gallops is the latest sire for Matamata's Paramount Lodge.

Studmaster Norm Hawthorne has secured Arkadian Hero, a son of Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Trempolino, to stand alongside Mellifont, Hunza Court and Colombia at Paramount Lodge.

In total Arkadian Hero won seven races, one Group 2 race, two Group 3 races and three listed races. "After his first two starts, he only raced in the best of company", says Norm Hawthorne. Giant's Causeway, Jim And Tonic, Fairy King Prawn, King Of Kings and New Zealand's own champion Sunline are just some of the horses Arkadian Hero clashed with during his racing career. Though he had to settle for minor placings behind this group of great gallopers, Arkadian Hero proved he was up to competing in top company. And had he conquered each of these champions there is no doubt he would have been outside the reach of a New Zealand stud.

His placings say something about him as a horse; he was second in the Atto Mile G1, the Prix Quincey G3, and the Leisure Stakes L. Third in the Leisure Sprint Cup G2, and the Queen Anne Stakes G2. He was also fourth in the Darley July Cup G1 in both 1998 and 1999. He was a top performer when you consider that he was rated more as a sprinter than a metric miler.

Apart from his fine credentials on the racetrack, his second dam is directly linked to seven Group 1 winners (three at two-year-olds) of 11 Group One races. It is a genuine stallion's pedigree and a good outcross for Northern Dancer line mares.

Norm Hawthorne says " I have a permanent agreement to shuttle him to New Zealand and I feel that is most important" "I'm really excited about Arkadian Hero, he's a good size – just over 16 hands – he was a top racehorse and he's got a great group one pedigree".

MEL DAVIES RESIGNS FROM ROA

The Council of the Racehorse Owners Association yesterday accepted the resignation of Mel Davies.

The ROA President Jim Furlong today expressed his regret that Mel had resigned from the Council on which he has served for eight years.

"Mel Davies' contribution to the ROA has been invaluable," said Furlong.

"With his own special brand of energy and enthusiasm, he has worked tirelessly to improve the lot of owners. In particular, he has applied commitment and dedication to helping the small owner and, in so doing, has embraced complex and difficult areas such as VAT and sponsorship. Over the years, he has also contributed a lot of his own money to race and owner sponsorship.

"We shall all miss Mel's very individual style of getting things done and I wish him every success for the future, both as an owner and businessman."
