MUQBIL SEES GUINEAS MONEY
The colts have the focus today with both Muqbil and Tout Seul being shortened slightly for the 2000 Guineas. Greenham winner Muqbil is now 8-1 from 9-1 and Tout Seul, who came in to the Guineas reckoning when beating Tomahawk in the Dewhurst last year, is a point longer at 9-1. Today's Derby trial at the home course saw Franklins Gardens' price halved from 100-1 to 50-1, whilst Brian Boru is pushed out again to 5-1.

SPARTACUS READY FOR PUNCHESTOWN BATTLE
Young Spartacus, who returned from a 14-month lay-off to land the Mildmay Of Flete Handicap Chase at last month's Cheltenham Festival, is set to have his first foray into Grade 1 company at Punchestown next week when lining up for the Punchestown Heineken Gold Cup, run on Wednesday and worth 160,000 euros.
"Young Spartacus will run as long as the ground is not too fast," said the ten-year-old's trainer Henry Daly.
"He came out of the Cheltenham Festival very well and I didn't run him there last week because they had not had enough rain. You're always worried about stepping up in class but I haven't got much choice now, we've got to go there. I presume Richard Johnson will ride although I haven't discussed it with him."
Another star chaser also heading across the Irish Sea for the Punchestown Heineken Gold Cup is Hussard Collonges, trained in North Yorkshire by Peter Beaumont. The eight-year-old, who inexplicably blotted his copybook when pulled up in the Tote Cheltenham Gold Cup, has been taken out of this Saturday's attheraces Gold Cup in preference for Punchestown.
"I have taken him out of the race at Sandown and we're hoping to get a run at Punchestown," said Beaumont. "The ground must be a fair bit softer than good but we're hoping that he is able to run."
Other probable starters in what promises to be a tremendous race are the outstanding novice Beef Or Salmon, Native Upmanship, who steps up in trip after his brilliant success in Aintree's Martell Melling Chase, and the 1999 Cheltenham Gold Cup hero See More Business, trained by Paul Nicholls.
The Irish National Hunt Festival at Punchestown, with record prize money of over 1.6 million euros, takes place next week from Tuesday to Friday, April 29 to May 2.
GOING GOOD AT PUNCHESTOWN
There were nine millimetres of rain at Punchestown on Monday and, after a dry day on Tuesday, the ground is currently good. But with further unsettled weather predicted in the run-up to next week, ground on the soft side of good is expected for the start of the Irish National Hunt Festival.
Director Of Racing Richie Galway said today: "Following the rain on Monday and a dry day on Tuesday, the ground is now good. We are expecting about three-quarters of an inch of rain by the weekend, mainly on Thursday and Friday and the weather is set to be unsettled over the weekend and in the run-up to the Festival. If the forecast rain arrives, I would expect the ground next week to be on the softer side of good."
TALE OF THE CAT JOINS COOLMORE AUSTRALIA ROSTER FOR 2003
Hot young American sire Tale of the Cat will join Rock of Gibraltar, Johannesburg and Danehill Dancer as new additions to the powerful line-up of stallions at Coolmore Australia this season.
Tale of the Cat, the fastest son yet of world-leading sire Storm Cat, brings to Coolmore Australia credentials of the highest order. After breaking his maiden by nearly 12 lengths in new track record time, Tale of the Cat won the Grade Two King¹s Bishop Stakes at Saratoga by nearly 6 lengths, clocking sensational fractions of 21.3, 43.2, 1:08.2 and 1:21.3 for the seven-furlong trip. He was also 2nd in the Grade One Whitney Hcp. (9f) at Saratoga, to multiple Gr.1 winner Awesome Again and was (twice) 3rd in the Grade One Vosburgh Stakes (7f) at Belmont.
Tale of the Cat offers breeders not only great speed and top-class performance, but also a pedigree abundant in champion racehorses and proven sires. Out of the Mr Prospector mare Yarn, Tale of the Cat is a half-brother to European Champion 2yo Minardi and to the dam of World Champion 2yo Johannesburg. Dam, Yarn, is herself a full sister to the dam of Pulpit, the leading second-crop sire, USA, for 2002 and sire of Gr.1-winning 2yo Sky Mesa, a Classic contender for 2003. This is also the family of Champion Sire Round Table.
Already a proven sire indeed, the leading second-crop sire, USA, for 2003, ahead of Elusive Quality and others Tale of the Cat is sire in Australasia this season of top-class 2yos Ubiquitous (Gr.3 and Listed winner, New Zealand), Scaredee Cat (Listed winner of the VATC Debutant S. and 3rd in the Gr.3 Blue Diamond Prelude), Al Jameel (3rd in the Gr.1 Sires' Produce S.), Purrfection (3rd in the Gr.2 N.Z Breeders¹ S.) and Catscan (a fast-finishing 4th to Maroofity in the Gr.1 N.Z. Sires' Produce S.)
Tale of the Cat's principal northern hemisphere performers include Gr.2 winner Inamorato (also an unlucky 3rd in the Gr.2 UAE Derby) and multiple SWs Catalissa and My Trusty Cat. Other first-crop stakes winners in America include Tale of a Dream, Risky Cat and Quick Draw, whilst Aristocat, Civility Cat and Curiosity are all Group/Stakes-placed, bringing to 14 the number of first-crop black-type horses already sired by one of the world's hottest young stallions.
"We're absolutely delighted to be able to offer Tale of the Cat's services to Australian mareowners this season", commented Coolmore Australia General Manager Michael Kirwan. "He is a superbly-bred horse with a top-class race record and is already a very exciting young proven sire, both in Australia and the USA. Importantly, he also gets real sales' horses. His first crop of southern hemisphere yearlings proved a great hit at last year's New Zealand sales and are performing accordingly on the racetrack."
Tale of the Cat's fee, together with those of all the Coolmore Australia stallions for 2003, will be set at the conclusion of the Inglis Easter Yearling sale.
SAGITTA GUINEAS HOPES DOING WELL
Fulke Johnson Houghton today (Wednesday, April 23) revealed that Tout Seul is doing well ahead of the Sagitta 2000 Guineas at Newmarket on Saturday, May 3, for which the last forfeits were announced.
"Tout Seul is just coming on nicely and we're very pleased with him," said the Oxfordshire-based trainer. "We'll be doing a bit today and we'll be doing a couple of bits of work before the race."
Tout Seul won five times as a two-year-old and was beaten no further than half a length on his other two outings. He put up his best performance to beat Tomahawk in the Group One Darley Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket in October.
The runner-up has franked the form this season by winning a Listed race in Ireland and finishing the unlucky-in-running half-length fourth in a Group Three event in France last weekend. In addition, Zafeen, fourth in the Dewhurst, went down by only one and a quarter lengths to Muqbil in one of the trials for the Sagitta 2000 Guineas, the Group Three Lane's End Greenham Stakes at Newbury on April 12.
"I would say that the Dewhurst form seems to be working out pretty well," remarked Johnson Houghton.
Tout Seul has never won on ground any firmer than good, although the Ali-Royal colt only failed by a head to Somnus on firm ground in the betabet Two-Year-Old Trophy at Redcar in October.
"He goes on any ground and he's run well on firm ground but he prefers it softer really," explained the handler.
When Johnson Houghton led Tout Seul into the Newmarket winner's enclosure after his Dewhurst success, he received a tremendous ovation from the Headquarter's crowd, who were seeing the trainer return to a stage that he once regularly graced. He trained brothers Ribocco and Ribero to both win the Irish Derby and St Leger in successive seasons (1967 and 1968), as well as saddling Ile De Bourbon to success in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes at Ascot in 1978.
When asked if he still suffered from big-race nerves, the 62-year-old laughed: "Yes, who doesn't!"
Soviet Song is currently the leading British-trained fancy in the betting for the Sagitta 1000 Guineas at Newmarket on Sunday, May 4, and connections today reported her in fine fettle with less than two weeks to go until the first fillies' classic.
"The latest is that Soviet Song has been doing plenty of work and on Saturday she worked on the Racecourse Side Gallop, where she worked very well," said Matthew Budden, manager of Elite Racing Club which owns the unbeaten filly. "She's strengthened up considerably from last year - she's grown a bit and we're very pleased with her."
The Marju filly's three successes in 2002 included the Group One Meon Valley Stud Fillies' Mile at Ascot in September, when she got the better of Casual Look, with Oblige beaten by four lengths and that filly finished a creditable length third to Nasij on her seasonal bow in the Listed McKeever St Lawrence Masaka Stakes at Kempton on Saturday.
"Everything Soviet Song beat last year, she's beaten easily so you're not too worried about what happens to any of her opponents, although when they run well it's obviously nice," said Budden. "Oblige ran OK and Soviet Song beat a Group One winner [Airwave] on her first outing last year and a Group Three winner [Summitville] on her second so her form's working out well."
With the Elite Racing Club boasting in excess of 14,000 members, there has been tremendous enthusiasm to be present at Newmarket to see Soviet Song, trained by James Fanshawe, attempt to enter the annals of racing history in the fillies Classic.
Budden continued: "We've had a lot of people book badges which we've already sent out. On the day, obviously, not everyone can get into the paddock but we're holding a draw to see who can. I haven't spoken to Newmarket yet but whatever they think is a safe number will go into the paddock."
The last star that the Elite Racing Club, which has enjoyed over 150 winners, had was Mysilv, who won the 1995 Tote Gold Trophy. Budden is attempting to remain calm.
"I'm just trying not to think about the Guineas to be honest," he added. "What will happen will happen - as long as Soviet Song gets there in good form, that will be good enough for us and that's all anyone can do, isn't it? I dare not think about it really."
LESS THAN TWO WEEKS TO GO UNTIL SEASON'S FIRST TWO CLASSICS
SAGITTA 2000 GUINEAS FORFEITS
The forfeit stage (yesterday - details announced today) saw 35 top-class entries stand their ground for the 2003 Flat season's first classic, the Sagitta 2000 Guineas at Newmarket with record prize money of £320,00 on Saturday, May 3, while 32 fillies remain in the £320,000 Sagitta 1000 Guineas at Newmarket on Sunday, May 4.
All of the leading fancies in the betting for the Sagitta 2000 Guineas have been left in by their trainers. These include ante-post favourite, the Aidan O'Brien-trained Hold That Tiger, who has yet to be seen on a racecourse this season, having last year won the Group One Grand Criterium - Lucien Barriere at Longchamp in October, before finishing the five-length third to Vindication in the Grade One Bessemer Trust Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Arlington Park, USA later that month.
The Storm Cat colt is one of seven Aidan O'Brien representatives, who include Tomahawk, unlucky when the half-length fourth to Clodovil on his last outing in a Group Three event at Longchamp on Sunday and maiden winners Catcher In The Rye, Dalcassian, Delacroix, France and Some Kind Of Tiger.
The other powerhouse of European racing, Godolphin, has five possibles including Lateen Sails, who won his only start in a Newmarket maiden last year for former trainer Henry Cecil and clocked a fast time when winning a private Godolphin trial at Nad Al Sheba, Dubai, earlier this month by one and three-quarter lengths from Graikos.
Love You Always was seventh in that trial and the Godolphin contingent is completed by Bourbonnais, who won last season's Listed Paradime Acomb Stakes at York, Dublin, triumphant in the Group Three Champagne Victor Vintage Stakes at Goodwood in July, and Songlark, who was the half-length runner-up to Victory Moon in the Group Two UAE Derby at Nad Al Sheba on his last start on March 29.
Recent trials winners who could line up for the Sagitta 2000 Guineas include Hurricane Alan, who won the Group Three Macau Jockey Club Craven Stakes at Newmarket by one and a half lengths from Lundy's Lane, Indian Haven, also successful at Headquarters in the Listed Victor Chandler European Free Handicap, and Muqbil, who was victorious in the Group Three Lane's End Greenham Stakes at Newbury by one and a quarter lengths from Zafeen.
Refuse To Bend won the Leopardstown 2,000 Guineas Trial Stakes on April 13 for globetrotting Irish trainer Dermot Weld.
SAGITTA 1000 GUINEAS FORFEITS
All of the main hopes for the Sagitta 1000 Guineas have also stood their ground. Ante-post favourite, Six Perfections, trained by Pascal Bary, has won her last four starts including the Group One Prix Marcel Boussac Criterium Pouliches - Royal Barriere de Deauville at Longchamp in October.
Godolphin, who won the 2002 Classic with Kazzia, has four entries who include Mezzo Soprano, winner of the UAE 1000 Guineas at Nad Al Sheba on March 13, by three lengths from stable-companion Gonfilia. The Maktoum family's racing entity's quartet is completed by Hi Dubai and Echoes In Eternity, first and third respectively (split by Gonfilia), in a private Godolphin trial at Nad Al Sheba this month.
Aidan O'Brien also has four representatives including Yesterday, a winner of a Listed heat in Ireland last term, L'Ancresse and Shangri La, runner-up and third to Dimitrova in the Leopardstown 1,000 Guineas Trial Stakes on April 13, and maiden scorer In The Limelight.
Other notable Sagitta 1000 Guineas acceptors include the unbeaten Group One Meon Valley Stud Fillies' Mile winner Soviet Song, the Andre Fabre-trained Intercontinental, Russian Rhythm, trained by Sir Michael Stoute, who was runner-up to Airwave in last season's Group One Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket, and Khulood, who produced a marvellous front-running effort to win last week's Shadwell Stud Nell Gwyn Stakes, also run at Headquarters, for trainer John Dunlop.

KEEP UP ON THE PREMIERSHIP TITLE RACE
Those coming to Newmarket for the Sagitta Guineas Meeting and anxious not to miss out on the race for the Premiership title can relax!

THE SAGITTA 2000 GUINEAS - Facts and Figures
* The race was first run in 1809 and won by Wizard. His connections - trainer T Perren, owner Christopher Wilson and jockey Bill Clift - were also responsible for the first 1000 Guineas winner, Charlotte in 1814.
* The mile contest, run on Newmarket's Rowley Mile course, is for three-year-old colts and fillies. Few fillies, who carry 5lb less than colts, run in the 2000 Guineas and seven have been successful - Pastille (1822), Crucifix (1840), Formosa (dead-heat with the colt Moslem in 1868), Pilgrimage (1878), Shotover (1882), Sceptre (1902) and Garden Path (1944).
* The largest field was in 1930 when there were 28 runners in the race won by Diolite while 27 ran in 2000. In both 1829 and 1830 there were just two competitors, with both winners - Patron and Augustus - owned by Lord Exeter and trained by C Marson. The maximum field allowed for safety reasons is currently 30.
* Since 1900 the longest winning distance was recorded in 1947 by Tudor Minstrel, who came away an easy eight-length winner. During the same period the contest has been won by the smallest margin (a short-head) a dozen times - Neil Gow (1910), Kennymore (1914), Adam's Apple (1927), Pay Up (1936), Kingsway (1943), Nimbus (1949), Palestine (1950), Only For Life (1963), Kashmir II (1966), Royal Palace (1967), Mister Baileys (1994) and, most recently, Mark Of Esteem (1996).
* The longest-priced winner in the history of the race was 1961 hero Rockavon, who was returned at 66/1. Not quite so generous were the odds of 12/100 laid on St Frusquin in 1896 - the shortest-priced winner.
* In the 193 runnings to date a total of 78 favourites or joint-favourites have obliged - a healthy 40.4% of winners have headed the betting market. Favourite backers have not had such a good time over the last 13 years with just one market leader, Zafonic at 5/6 in 1993, obliging.
* Irish-trained horses have won eight renewals since 1900. The first was 1960 winner Martial, trained by Paddy Prendergast, and he has been followed by Sir Ivor (1968 Vincent O'Brien), Nijinsky (1970 Vincent O'Brien), Nebbiolo (1977 Kevin Prendergast), Lomond (1983 Vincent O'Brien), El Gran Senor (1984 Vincent O'Brien), King Of Kings (1998 Aidan O'Brien) and Rock Of Gibraltar (2002 Aidan O'Brien).
* Since 1900 there have been 11 winners trained in France. They are 1933 Rodosto (trained by Harry Count), 1937 Le Ksar (F Carter), 1940 Djebel (A Swann), 1952 Thunderhead II (Etienne Pollett), 1959 Taboun (Alec Head), 1964 Baldric II (Ernie Fellows), 1966 Kashmir II (Charles Bartholomew), 1974 Nonoalco (Francois Boutin), 1982 Zino (Francois Boutin), 1994 Zafonic (Andre Fabre) and 1995 Pennekamp (Andre Fabre).
* The first horse to complete the 2000 Guineas/Epsom Derby double was Smolensko, owned by Sir Charles Bunbury, in 1813. Since then a further 33 horses have completed this double, the most recent being Nashwan in 1989.
* Sir Michael Stoute, responsible for the 2001 Sagitta 2000 Guineas winner Golan, is the most successful current trainer with five victories. His other four winners were Shadeed (1985), Doyoun (1988), Entrepreneur (1997) and King's Best (2000). Richard Hannon has saddled three winners - Mon Fils (1973), Don't Forget Me (1987) and Tirol (1990).
* The most successful current jockeys are Mick Kinane and Pat Eddery with three wins apiece. Kinane gained his most recent win in 1998 on the Aidan O'Brien-trained King Of Kings, and also scored on Entrepreneur the previous season and Tirol in 1990. Eddery's trio are Lomond (1983), El Gran Senor (1984) and the French-trained Zafonic (1993). Kieren Fallon will be hoping to join them this year, having ridden the winner for two of the last three years while Frankie Dettori has also had a couple of successes.
* The record time is 1m 35.08s, set by Mister Baileys in 1994.

48 FOR TOTE CHESTER CUP
An excellent entry of 48 has been received for the 2003 renewal of the TOTE CHESTER CUP, run over an extended two miles and two furlongs at Chester on Wednesday, May 7, with the Tote making the Martin Pipe-trained Fortune Island, who has just 7st 13lb following his success in Saturday's Queen's Prize Handicap at Kempton, the 6/1 favourite.
The weights for the £120,000 handicap are jointly headed on 9st 10lb by the 2000 victor Bangalore, one of two entries for Sussex-based trainer handler Amanda Perrett, along with Big Moment (8st 9lb). Three years ago Bangalore just got the better of Irish challenger Ansar to score by a short-head.
Bangalore is joined at the head of the weights on 9st 10lb by Darasim, triumphant in a Listed handicap at Goodwood last season, from the Mark Johnston stable while Sir Michael Stoute's Cover Up, victorious in the 2002 Queen Alexandra Stakes at Royal Ascot, is on 9st 9lb.
The champion National Hunt trainer Martin Pipe has proved over the years that he is equally at home raiding the major staying handicaps on the Flat and, as well as Fortune Island, his five entries comprise Canada (8st 13lb), Penny Pictures (8st), Dubai Seven Stars (7st 11lb) and Guard Duty (7st 6lb) as he bids to land his first Tote Chester Cup.
Another trainer well represented is Tim Easterby, whose father Peter sent out the great Sea Pigeon to win back-to-back renewals of the Tote Chester Cup in 1977 and 1978. Easterby junior has four entries to fall back on including Bourgeois (9st 4lb) who won well on his seasonal reappearance at Haydock and The Whirlingdervish (7st 11lb), who took the Brown Jack Handicap at Ascot last season. The Easterby quartet is completed by Timing (7st llb) and Bollin Thomas (7st 10lb).
The last Irish success in the Tote Chester Cup was back in 1964 when Credo was successful for Paddy Prendergast and this year there are a brace of entries from the yard of Dermot Weld - Lowlander (8st 9lb), who took the valuable September Handicap at the Curragh last season, and Direct Bearing (8st 8lb), second in the 2002 Tote Cesarewitch at Newmarket.
Other interesting entries include the Jamie Osborne-trained Red Wine (8st 6lb), last season's Tote Scoop6 November Handicap winner who has been in good form over hurdles thiswinter. Hugs Dancer (8st 10lb) landed the Tote Ebor at York in August and could bid to add the Tote Chester Cup to his CV.
Andy Clifton, the Tote's Public Relations Director, said: "We are delighted to see the quality of the entries for this year's renewal of the Tote Chester Cup and are eagerly awaiting another exciting renewal of this historic handicap."

GARRITTY AND REVELEY TAKE JUMPING HONOURS
Russ Garritty's victory on board Frankie Anson in the opening race at Wetherby on Easter Monday made him the leading jockey on the Yorkshire racecourses during the 2002/03 Jumping season.
The success on Frankie Anson put Russ on the nine-winner mark during the Jumping campaign on the Yorkshire tracks - the same total as Tony Dobbin, the previous season's top rider in the county; however, Russ recorded more second and third places than his friend and rival to secure the award.
Mary Reveley retained her title in the trainers' category, with 15 winners on the Yorkshire courses - one more than Sue Smith; in fact they both recorded a winner apiece at Wetherby on Easter Monday.
For the second year, the three racecourses which host Jump racing in Yorkshire - Catterick, Doncaster and Wetherby - through their management company, International Racecourse Management, provide the trophies for both trainer and rider, which will be presented to the respective winners at the 'Go Racing in Yorkshire' Annual Lunch at the Ripon Spa Hotel on Tuesday, 2 December. These are in addition to the existing awards for the top trainer and jockey during the Flat season in Yorkshire - supported by Sky Bet - which are also presented at the Annual Lunch.
