WINNERS OF HORSE-RACING WRITING AWARDS FOR UNDER 26s AND UNDER 19s ANNOUNCED

The 11th annual Martin Wills Memorial Trust awards, for a high quality journalistic feature by a young person on any aspect of, or with a background in, horse-racing, have, for the first time, been won entirely by girls. The number of entries (126 - 86 senior and 40 junior) was the second highest ever.

The under 26 winner is Jessica Rexroth, 23, an American from Maryland, USA, who is currently resident in London NW1, where she is studying at the Royal Veterinary College, having graduated as a Bachelor of Animal Sciences at Virginia Tech in the USA. Her article, "Taming the Beast", for which she receives £1,250, will be published in the Racing Post and Irish Field. In addition, she will retain for a year a bronze trophy of two galloping horses by Gill Wiles.

The under 26 runner-up is 24 year old Catherine Austen from Brecon in South Wales but currently resident in London SW6. An MA in English from St Andrew's University, she is Eventing Editor of Horse & Hound, having previously worked as Secretary to Nick Cheyne, Clerk of the Course at Ascot Racecourse. She receives £750 for her article, "My Life as a Racing Girlfriend".

The under 19s competition has been won by 16 year old Jennifer Hamilton from Solihull in the West Midlands, who is preparing for her GCSEs at King Edward VI Camphill Grammar School for Girls. She receives £500 for her article, "Getting fit for the Festival - the diary of an ordinary family's preparation for Cheltenham".

Additionally, Martha Terry, 24, from Higham in South Suffolk but currently resident in London SW5, and Orlaith O'Connor, 15, from Limerick, Ireland, were highly commended. Both receive £50 book tokens.

The judges were: Brough Scott, Editorial Director of the Racing Post, sports feature writer of The Sunday Telegraph and for 30 years until recently chief presenter of Channel 4 Racing (Chairman); Richard Edmondson, the racing correspondent of The Independent; Lydia Hislop, Evening Standard columnist and Attheraces presenter; Tony Sweeney, form analyst of the Irish Times, having from 1956 to 1997 been the Daily Mirror's Irish racing correspondent; and Catherine Wills, art historian sister of Martin Wills.

Brough Scott stated "I am delighted at the writing talent these awards are encouraging. That was exactly the original idea of honouring Martin Wills' memory. I think this year's entries are the most impressive batch we have ever had. I am proud as well as honoured to be involved."
