EIGHT ADDED TO VODAFONE DERBY

A total of eight horses were added to the 2003 Vodafone Derby at Wednesday's 9,000 second entry stage, giving further spice to the world's most famous Flat race, run at Epsom Downs on Saturday, June 7.

The Godolphin team is responsible for three of the second entries, namely New South Wales, who won both his starts for John Oxx last season and has been well-supported for the premier Classic over the winter, the ex-Henry Cecil Lateen Sails, recent winner of a private trial in Dubai, and Bourbonnais, who finished fifth in the UAE Derby at Nad Al Sheba in Dubai on March 29.

Irish-based John Oxx, whose only previous Vodafone Derby runner was the 2000 winner Sinndar, is responsible for the Aga Khan's Alamshar, who beat Brian Boru in last season's Group 3 Beresford Stakes and is expected to make his seasonal reappearance in the Group 3 Ballysax Stakes at Leopardstown on Sunday.

Last year's Vodafone Derby hero High Chaparral, the 2001 winner Galileo and Sinndar all made their seasonal reappearance in the Ballysax Stakes.

Dermot Weld, whose amazing portfolio of global big-race successes has still to include the Vodafone Derby, has entered both the Group 1 National Stakes winner Refuse To Bend and the unexposed Former Senator, who finished fourth on his racecourse debut behind Tomahawk in a Listed event at the Curragh on March 23.

The John Dunlop-trained Big Bad Bob, who registered his fourth victory last season in the Listed Autumn Stakes at Ascot, has also been added to the Vodafone Derby line-up while Dunlop's son Ed has entered Cheveley Park Stud's home-bred Battle Chant, the six-length winner of a Pontefract Listed event in October.

There is one final opportunity to add horses to the 1.2 million Vodafone Derby - the £90,000 supplementary entry stage on May 29.

Stephen Wallis, Managing Director of Epsom Downs Racecourse, commented: "We are delighted to see eight horses being entered at the three-year-old entry stage and appreciate the assistance we have received from the International Racing Bureau in having targeted six of these horses in advance. The Vodafone Derby is THE race, it's the one that everybody wants to win."

ALAMSHAR (IRE)
b c Key Of Luck (USA) - Alaiyda (USA) (Shahrastani (USA))
Owner: H H Aga Khan Breeder: His Highness The Aga Khan's Studs S C
Form: 11- Trainer: John Oxx IRE

Alamshar represents the winning connections of Sinndar, the 2000 Vodafone Derby hero. He is out of Alaiyda, a Roscommon maiden winner in 1994 and a daughter of the subsequently disqualified 1989 Vodafone Oaks winner Aliysa. Unbeaten on his two starts last season, Alamshar holds the distinction of being the only horse to beat the current ante-post favourite for the Vodafone Derby, Brian Boru. He began his career at Listowel on September 26 in a mile maiden, when he comfortably defeated Russia by two lengths.
His next start came in the Group Three Juddmonte Beresford Stakes over the same distance at the Curragh on October 13, when he came with a strong late run to defy Brian Boru by a head. Alamshar is entered in the Group Three PW McGrath Memorial Ballysax Stakes at the Curragh this coming Sunday - a race contested in the last three years by subsequent Vodafone Derby winners High Chaparral, Galileo and Sinndar.

BATTLE CHANT (USA)
b c Coronado's Quest (USA) - Appointed One (USA) (Danzig (USA))
Owner: Cheveley Park Stud Breeder: Cheveley Park Stud
Form: 3411- Trainer: Ed Dunlop

Battle Chant made four appearances as a juvenile, winning twice. The Coronado's Quest colt was unlucky not to score on his debut in a six-furlong Ripon maiden on June 20, having been badly hampered in the final furlong. He was disappointing on his next start when a well-beaten fourth behind Monsieur Bond in a six-furlong at Pontefract on July 28. He was given a break until September 12, when he ran away with a seven-furlong at Chepstow by nine lengths. On October 21 he returned to Pontefract and ran out an impressive winner of the Listed Silver Tankard Stakes by six lengths from Inchberry.

BIG BAD BOB (IRE)
br c Bob Back (USA) - Fantasy Girl (IRE) (Marju (IRE))
Owner: Windflower Overseas Holdings Inc Breeder: Windflower Overseas Holdings Inc
Form: 021111- Trainer: John Dunlop

Sired by Bob Back, best known as a National Hunt stallion, Big Bad Bob was a progressive performer in 2002. After shaping with promise in maidens at Newbury and Folkestone in July, he got his head in front for the first time when landing a seven-furlong maiden at Newcastle on August 16 by four lengths. His next two outings were both at Chester, where he won a novice stakes over an extended seven furlongs on August 29 and a conditions race over the same distance on September 25. Big Bad Bob next appeared at Ascot's final Flat meeting of the season on October 12, when he put up his best performance of the season to win the Listed Autumn Stakes over a mile by three-and-a-half lengths.

BOURBONNAIS (IRE)
b c Singspiel (IRE)- Rose Bourbon (USA) (Woodman (USA))
Owner: Godolphin Breeder: Addison Racing Ltd Inc
Form: 121-35 Trainer: Saeed bin Suroor

A bargain 25,000gns yearling purchase, Bourbonnais was trained by Mark Johnston in 2002, winning a seven-furlong maiden at York by five lengths from My Fas on his debut in July. Later that month he was stepped up in class for the Group Three Champagne Victor Vintage Stakes at Goodwood, finding just Dublin a length and a quarter too good in this seven-furlong event. On his final juvenile start over the same trip the following month, the Singspiel colt gained his second success in the Listed Paradime Acomb Stakes at York, denying Salcombe by three-quarters of a length.

He returned at Nad Al Sheba in Dubai in February when, tried over a mile for the first time, he was a length and three-quarters third behind Victory Moon in the Group Three UAE 2,000 Guineas on dirt for his new stable. He again found that rival too good in the Group Two UAE Derby over ten furlongs on dirt at the same venue on his last start in March, this time going down by eight lengths.

FORMER SENATOR (IRE)
b c Sadler's Wells (USA) - Elegance In Design (Habitat)
Owner: Moyglare Stud Farm Ltd Breeder: Moyglare Stud Farm Ltd
Form: -4 Trainer: Dermot Weld IRE

Former Senator, carrying the colours of his breeder, Walter Haefner's Moyglare Stud Farm, has only made one racecourse appearance to date. The son of Sadler's Wells, who has sired the last two winners of the Vodafone Derby in High Chaparral and Galileo, finished the two and a quarter length fourth to Tomahawk in a seven-furlong Listed contest at the Curragh on March 23, shaping with promise after making a slow start.

LATEEN SAILS
b c Elmaamul (USA) - Felucca (Green Desert (USA))
Owner: Godolphin Breeder: Juddmonte Farms
Form: 1- Trainer: Saeed bin Suroor

Lateen Sails won his only public racecourse appearance when trained by Henry Cecil in the famous colours of former owner Khalid Abdulla in a mile maiden at Newmarket in October, beating Powerscourt by a length and a quarter. Subsequently purchased by Godolphin, the Elmaamul colt was impressive when winning a private trial over the same distance at Nad Al Sheba on April 4, denying Graikos by one and three-quarter lengths.

NEW SOUTH WALES
b c In The Wings - Temora (IRE) (Ela-Mana-Mou)
Owner: Godolphin Breeder: Sheikh Mohammed
Form: 11- Trainer: Saeed bin Suroor

The Sheikh Mohammed-bred New South Wales was unbeaten on two starts last season for Irish trainer John Oxx. After making a winning bow in a mile maiden at the Curragh on October 5, when he beat Chevalier by three-quarters of a length, he was not unduly concerned by the step down in trip to seven furlongs or the step up in class 23 days later when scoring in the Group Three Killavullan Stakes at Leopardstown, this time denying Napper Tandy by a head.

New South Wales has subsequently been transferred to trainer Saeed bin Suroor and Godolphin, running in a private trial over a mile at Nad Al Sheba, UAE on April 4, finishing the three and three-quarter length fifth to stable-companion Lateen Sails.

REFUSE TO BEND (IRE)
b c Sadler's Wells (USA) - Market Slide (USA) (Gulch (USA))
Owner: Moyglare Stud Farm Ltd Breeder: Moyglare Stud Farm Ltd
Form: 11- Trainer: Dermot Weld IRE

Although he only ran twice last season, Refuse To Bend has winning form at the highest level. The son of Sadler's Wells made his debut on August 14 at Gowran Park, where he defeated 12 rivals to score a facile four-length success. After that run trainer Dermot Weld sent Refuse To Bend to the Group One Aga Khan Studs National Stakes over seven furlongs at the Curragh on September 15 when he lowered the colours of both Coolmore and Godolphin, coming with a strong challenge in the final furlong to defeat Van Nistelrooy and Dublin.

BETFAIR BACKS '3000' GUINEAS AT NEWMARKET

"Horsing Around"

The 24th May 2003 sees the first running of the 'Betfair 3000' Guineas. This is a horse race with a slight difference - it's a race over one furlong for pantomime horses.....Oh yes, it is.

The race will be run on the historic Rowley Mile Race Course at Newmarket.

This benefit race is for charity; funds raised will be split between Racing Welfare and Newmarket Round Table, who are raising funds on behalf of a Homeless Project in Newmarket.

The race is organised by Newmarket Round Table with much help from Newmarket Racecourse. The main sponsor is Betfair - the company that is revolutionising betting.

Calling all Horses

What we need is companies, clubs, pubs or even individuals (providing there are two of you, that is!) to enter the event. The entry cost is £100, but there are additional sponsorship opportunities. Ask friends and colleagues to support you and the charity. Just think fame at last, as participants you will also be able to feature in the parade ring and in the winner's enclosure.

Your entry will appear in the official race card and you will be able to name your horse, for example:

Name of Horse The ABC Company Horse
Front Legs Neale Smith
Hind Legs Paul Catling

You will also be able to tell us the 'Form' of your horse, for example:

Showed promise as a 2-year-old, now approaching middle age, starting to slow.

To enter you will need to complete an Entry Form this can be obtained from Paul 01638 743714 or downloaded from www.newmarketroundtable.org.uk. Entrants will need to provide their own horse costumes.

Paul Catling, Chairman of Newmarket Round Table, said: "We hope the event will create plenty of publicity, let alone fun. Naturally we are hoping to make a lot more than just the entry cost and in this context we are particularly grateful for the support of Betfair."
