JUDDMONTE OAKS ENTRY SPACIOUS IS PROGRESSING NICELY - 91 FILLIES ENTERED FOR JUDDMONTE OAKS
The Group One Juddmonte Oaks, which takes place at the historic Epsom Downs on Friday, June 6, has attracted a bumper 91 entries, significantly more than the 73 received at the same stage last year. The mile and a half fillies’ Classic, inaugurated in 1779, is sponsored for the first time in 2008 by Juddmonte.
Owner Cheveley Park Stud has two fillies entered, headed by the James Fanshawe-trained Spacious. The Nayef filly is unbeaten in two starts and scored a fantastic victory in the Group Two May Hill Stakes at Doncaster in September.
Spacious, who opened her account in a Leicester maiden the previous month, travelled strongly before battling to a length and a half verdict over Kotsi.
Chris Richardson, Managing Director of Cheveley Park Stud, revealed today: “It is very early days but I know Spacious has done really well physically. She has not done much yet in terms of work, but she has strengthened quite promisingly. She was tall, scopey and quite a leggy filly last year, so we were excited about what she achieved.”
The filly, who could take in a trial race first time up, also holds entries in the English and Irish 1,000 Guineas and could take in one of those races en route to Epsom.
Richardson continued: “All being well she will probably go for a trial - where is yet to be decided, but it could be at Newbury or Newmarket. It is early days and the form of the Doncaster race was slightly let down by the second (Kotsi) in the Fillies’ Mile.
“It was logical to make the entry as you have to be in to run. We will start her off over a mile and hopefully creep up in distance and see what happens.”
Cheveley Park Stud could also be represented by the Sir Michael Stoute-trained Quotation, a twice-raced maiden by Medicean from a speedy family.
Richardson reported: “There are some stamina doubts on the pedigree. She has not really done a lot on the track so far, but obviously Sir Michael is pleased with her and felt it a good recommendation to enter her. We are very much on a wing and a prayer with her but we hope that she does progress.
“On the bare facts of what she has done to date, it could be a tall order but you just have to take a chance and we will see how she progresses. She works like she will stay and whether she is going to be that good, time will tell.”
Stoute has twice saddled the Juddmonte Oaks winner (1978 Fair Salinia, 1987 Unite) and has another entry in the shape of Sovereign’s Honour, a $550,000 Keeneland yearling by Kingmambo, owned by Saeed Suhail.
Listen heads the antepost market for the fillies’ Classic and the Group One Meon Valley Stud Fillies’ Mile winner is one of a massive 22-strong entry for Irish maestro Aidan O’Brien, who has won the race with Shahtoush (1998), Imagine (2001) and Alexandrova (2006).
The Ballydoyle handler has also entered Kitty Matchem, successful in the Group Two Rockfel Stakes at Newmarket in October, and Prix Marcel Boussac fourth Savethisdanceforme.
Henry Cecil has won the race more times than any other current trainer. He saddled his eighth winner of the race last year when Light Shift scored under Ted Durcan for the Niarchos Family. Cecil’s one entry is the once raced Montbretia, owned by race sponsor Khalid Abdulla, for whom he trained 1997 heroine Reams Of Verse.
There are five French entries this year, notably the brilliant Zarkava who landed the Group One Prix Marcel Boussac for the Aga Khan and trainer Alain de Royer Dupre.
Jean Claude Rouget has entered the unbeaten pair of Honorlina and Quarayed, while French master Andre Fabre, successful in 1993 with Intrepidity, relies on Group One Meon Valley stud Fillies’ Mile runner-up Proviso and Gagnoa. Robert Collet has engaged Albisola.
There are a total of 38 Irish-trained entries. Dermot Weld took the Juddmonte Oaks in 1981 with Blue Wind and the Irish handler has engaged Mad About You, third to Zarkava at Longchamp in October, and Chinese White, impressive winner of a Leopardstown maiden in September.
Jim Bolger is looking for his second Juddmonte Oaks victory as he saddled the 1991 heroine, Jet Ski Lady. The County Carlow trainer has seven entries, all sired by 2001 Vodafone Derby hero Galileo, and headed by Lush Lashes, whose sole start to date brought victory in the lucrative Parknasilla Hotel Goffs Fillies Million.
John Oxx’s quartet includes Simawa, an Anabaa half-sister to 2000 Vodafone Derby and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner Sinndar.
Sense Of Joy is two from two, including victory in the Group Three Prestige Stakes at Goodwood in August. Khalid Abdullah’s Dansili filly is one of four entries for trainer John Gosden, the same number as Michael Jarvis, who saddled Eswarah to triumph in 2005. Jarvis’s quartet includes the Montjeu filly Island Vista from the family of Colorspin.
Godolphin trainer Saeed bin Suroor has savoured two triumphs in the Juddmonte Oaks (1995 Moonshell, 2001 Kazzia) and the Maktoum’s stable has a septet of fillies entered, including Group Three-placed Laureldean Gale, Screen Star, the 11-length winner of a Redcar maiden in August, Siyabona and Whispered Dreams.
User Friendly was a brilliant winner of the 1992 Juddmonte Oaks for Clive Brittain and the Newmarket handler has five entries this time, including highly-regarded Group Three winner Albabilia, who was unsuccessfully pitched against older horses in a Nad Al Sheba Listed contest in February.
John Dunlop has twice been successful with Circus Plume (1984) and Salsabil (1990) and has entered the Galileo filly Elmaleeha, runner-up on her only start in a Newmarket maiden. Dunlop’s son Ed sent out Ouija Board to victory in 2004 and another son, Harry, has two entries, Group One Cheveley Park Stakes third Festoso and Classic Remark.

JEFFERSON HOPING FOR ROMAN CONQUEST IN JOHN SMITH’S TOPHAM CHASE
A total of 87 horses, three more than in 2007, have been entered for the £110,000 John Smith’s Topham Chase (3.45pm), which takes place on the second day of the John Smith’s Grand National Meeting at Aintree, on Friday, April 4.
Trainer Malcolm Jefferson is looking forward to a big run from Roman Ark in the extended two mile and five furlong contest, run over the famous Grand National fences.
The Malton-based handler had initially thought of running his star chaser in the John Smith’s Grand National, but decided to let Roman Ark take his chance over the shorter trip.
Jefferson explained: “We are aiming Roman Ark at the John Smith’s Topham Chase at Aintree. He was entered in the John Smith’s Grand National but we took him out because we thought the race might be too far for him.
“If the ground is not too fast, which I don’t think it will be, then he will definitely take his chance. He likes soft ground and we missed Cheltenham because we thought the going there would be too fast. We’ve gone to the Festival three times before and the ground was good. It was sod’s law that the one we missed proved to be soft!”
Jefferson was delighted with Roman Ark’s second behind Grade One winner Marcel in a handicap chase at Kelso on March 1, especially since the10-year-old gelding was running over an insufficient trip on ground that was faster than ideal.
Jefferson continued: “We ran him over two miles last time and we thought it would be soft, but it dried out and he’s actually run a fantastic race over a trip which was too short for him. Marcel used to be a highly rated horse and he’s no mug, but the ground beat us that day.
“As long as it’s good jumping ground then he will certainly line up at Aintree and the extended two mile, five furlong trip should be perfect for Roman Ark. He’s run twice there before, having slipped up and then being pulled up in the Grade Two John Smith’s Mildmay Novices’ Chase, but I’ve got few worries about the Grand National fences.
“We haven’t been hard on him him this year and we’ve always looked after him. He’s always been an honest horse and we’ve always let him take his chance and run on his merits.
“He’s won round Haydock a couple of times and the fences there aren’t small. He’s a great jumper and he’s a clever horse. I’d be surprised and disappointed if he didn’t get round Aintree. I wouldn’t think of running him if I didn’t think he had a decent chance.”
Champion trainer Paul Nicholls has six horses entered in the John Smith’s Topham Chase, including Racing Post Chase winner Gungadu, Connaught Gold Cup victor Natal and recent Racing Post Plate runner-up Gwanako. Andreas, smart novice Arturio and last year’s sixth Le Volfoni complete the Ditcheat-based handler’s sextet.
David Pipe has entered former totesport Bowl winner Celestial Gold and Milan Deux Mille, who finished fifth in this race last year behind fellow entry Dunbrody Millar, whose trainer Peter Bowen has also engaged Tommy Spar, Lankawi and Lawyer Des Ormeaux.
Dual John Smith’s Grand National winning trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies, successful in this race with Indian Tonic in 1994, could be represented by Grade Two winner Knowhere, Racing Post Plate third Fundamentalist, Naunton Brook, Patman Du Charmil, and Irish Raptor, who finished seventh in the John Smith’s Topham Chase last year.
Nicky Henderson, who won the John Smith’s Topham Chase with Liberthine in 2005, has entered unexposed chaser Kenzo III and Crozan, while Philip Hobbs, who has been victorious with Bells Life (1997) and Gower-Slave (2001) has engaged useful performer Boychuk and Out The Black.
A strong Irish-trained entry of 20 is headed by the 2006 Grade One John Smith’s Melling Chase winner Hi Cloy. Trainer Michael Hourigan has also engaged A New Story, who was a staying on fifth over the National fences in the totesport.com Becher Chase in November.
Willie Mullins, successful in this race with Its Time For A Win in 2002, has entered 2006 fifth Euro Leader and Bothar Na, while Arthur Moore could be represented by recent Leopardstown handicap scorer Well Tutored and Pierse Handicap Chase third Notable d’Estruval.
Other notable Irish entries include 2006 tote Gold Cup third Forget The Past, Grade Two novice chase winner Benefit Night, Newbay Prop from the shrewd Tony Martin yard, the Tom Taaffe-trained pair of Glenfinn Captain and In The High Grass and 2006 Grade One John Smith’s Maghull Novices’ scorer Foreman.
Tickets remain available for all three days of the John Smith’s Grand National Meeting - go to www.aintree.co.uk or ring 0151 522 2929.

PRIZE BOOST FOR CONSOLATION RACE AS WILLIAM HILL LINCOLN HOPES DISPLAYED
William Hill, sponsors of the entire card at Doncaster on Saturday (March 22), today announced an increase in prize money for the consolation race for the £125,000 William Hill Lincoln, the William Hill Spring Mile, from £30,000 to £40,000.
Both the £40,000 William Hill Spring Mile (2.50pm) and the £125,000 William Hill Lincoln (4pm) will have maximum fields of 22.
David Hood, head of PR at William Hill, explained: “We are raising the value of the consolation race to £40,000 to encourage trainers of horses who do not make the cut for the William Hill Lincoln to run in it.
“When we met with Doncaster earlier in the year to talk about prize money, we raised the William Hill Lincoln to £125,000 from £100,000 and we considered putting more money into the William Hill Spring Mile.
“We decided not to then because we wanted to concentrate on the main race but given the way the handicap has panned out with so many of the good horses in danger of missing the cut and, taking into account the disparity in value between the two races, we are going to put another £10,000 into the William Hill Spring Mile.”
Adam Waterworth, managing director of Doncaster Racecourse, welcomed the additional prize money for the William Hill Spring Mile.
He said: “This will be the highest class William Hill Lincoln ever and it is fitting that the consolation race has been given a 25 per cent boost.”
On a media visit to Newmarket today, trainers William Haggas and Peter Chapple-Hyam spoke about their William Hill Lincoln hopes.
Haggas, twice a winner of the William Hill Lincoln with High Low in 1992 and Very Wise last year, was up on Warren Hill supervising his string this morning on his hack, the grey Sailor Jim who once finished second in the Topham Chase at Aintree.
Very Wise, going for the famous mile handicap again, cantered on the all-weather, while his other William Hill Lincoln hope Heaven Knows came up an adjoining grass canter.
Haggas commented: “Very Wise has done his final work already. Personally, I feel in these big handicaps you have got to be well handicapped - it does not matter how well you get your horse if he has too much weight.
“Also you need to be looking at a horse who has the potential to be placed in a Listed or Group race. All of those types seem likely to be in the consolation race on Saturday.
“When High Low won the Lincoln, he was rated 75 - you would not get in the consolation race now with that rating.
“The William Hill Lincoln seems to have lots of Very Wises in there so he might actually run OK. He is in good shape.”
Very Wise can have problems when loaded in the stalls.
His trainer continued: “The starters and I have a row all the time because he loads beautifully but then tends to get his head over into the next stall. He has done it twice.
“They know he loads and this is where the rules are too black and white. If they put him in right at the end and sent them off there would be no problem.
“Now last year in the Lincoln, I think he got drawn 16 and if you get drawn even you are among the last horses to go in. If he gets drawn even he should be fine, but odd numbers will not be so good.
“He nearly had his head chopped off in the William Hill Lincoln Trial at Wolverhampton last year when he was favourite. It was probably the best thing that ever happened to him as he was pulled up on the turn and did not have a race. He also did it somewhere else last year - at York I think.
“Very Wise ran two bad races on the all-weather at the end of last season - he is like that, he can put in a dodgy race.”
Jimmy Fortune takes the ride on Very Wise, while Richard Hills will partner Heaven Knows for his retainer Hamdan Al Maktoum if the owner’s Zaahid, the 6/1 favourite with Hills, fails to get in. Otherwise Martin Dwyer will be on board Heaven Knows.
“Heaven Knows likes soft ground and he is a totally different horse since we castrated him during the winter. He has a lot to do but you never know.
“He wasn’t racing (properly) last year - he did not do anything early. This year he is much sharper and much more with it.
“I think a mile and a quarter is probably his best trip and, after he won at Newbury, he went for the November Handicap over 12 furlongs because he was on a roll and that was the most valuable race he could go for. He did not run badly to be sixth.
“His dam Rambling Rose won the 11-furlong Lancashire Oaks but she was by the sprinter Cadeaux Genereux. There is nothing we can do about it if he is not quick enough. Hopefully, it will pour with rain because he does like soft ground.”
Don’t Panic could represent Chapple-Hyam in the William Hill Lincoln on Saturday, though he may not get into the race.
The trainer, who paraded the four-year-old at St Gatien Stables in Newmarket, said: “Being a gelding he hasn’t quite come in his coat yet and he has had a little knock behind but that is nothing much.
“He is an honest genuine horse and better on soft ground. Let’s hope he gets in. If he doesn’t, I am not sure about the consolation race because he will have a big weight and if he won it would mess his whole season up. We will see with the extra prize money but I do want to run him in the Lincoln.
“He is very well. I thought he could be a Lincoln horse after he won at Goodwood last year. He went home afterwards as he always does and came back late so it has been a bit of rush to get him ready. But he is a ready enough now.”
Alan Munro is the jockey lined up for Don’t Panic who is a 14/1 shot with William Hill.

VERY WISE
6 b g Pursuit Of Love - With Care (Warning)
Form: 1/64044/0031/431P216030100- Trainer: William Haggas
Owner: John Greetham Breeder: John Greetham
Very Wise scored the biggest success of his career in last year’s renewal of the William Hill Lincoln which took place at Newcastle while Doncaster was being redeveloped. Ridden by Joe Fanning, the six-year-old gelding raced prominently throughout the famous mile contest and drew clear in the final furlong for a length victory over Rio Riva. It was a second William Hill Lincoln victory for William Haggas who also saddled High Low in 1992. Very Wise began his career with victory at 50/1 in a juvenile maiden at Yarmouth in October, 2004, and has enjoyed a total of five victories from 23 starts. His second triumph came on the Polytrack at Wolverhampton in December, 2006, and the following month he saw off Cusoon in a 10-furlong handicap at Lingfield on the same surface. After his William Hill Lincoln success, Very Wise scored once more during the 2007 campaign, winning a mile handicap at Newmarket on November 3 by a length and a quarter from Kinsya. Very Wise (9st) is currently a 14/1 chance with the race sponsors for the William Hill Lincoln which returns to Doncaster on Saturday, March 22.
HEAVEN KNOWS
5 ch g Halling (USA) - Rambling Rose (Cadeaux Genereux)
Form: 531/121/06416- Trainer: William Haggas
Owner: Hamdan Al Maktoum Breeder: Southcourt Stud
A half-brother to the top-class Notnowcato, conqueror of Derby winner Authorized in the 2007 Eclipse Stakes at Sandown, Heaven Knows may not quite scale those heights but the lightly-raced five-year-old is a smart performer in his own right with four victories from 11 career starts. His most recent success came at Newbury in October when he landed a 10-furlong soft ground handicap under Richard Hills. He missed the first half of the 2007 season and 2006 saw him race only three times but with great effect, scoring over a mile at Thirsk and notching a 10-furlong win at Chester, with a runner-up finish sandwiched in between. Heaven Knows opened his account at the third attempt as a juvenile in 2005, winning a six-furlong maiden on the Wolverhampton Polytrack that November. Heaven Knows has 8st 8lb in the William Hill Lincoln and the sponsors make him a 14/1 shot.
DON’T PANIC
4 ch g Fath (USA) - Torrmana (IRE) (Ela-Mana-Mou)
Form: 4410/0063151- Trainer: Peter Chapple-Hyam
Owner: A B S Webb Breeder: Bernard Colclough
Don’t Panic ended last season with an impressive four-length triumph over Crocodile Bay at Goodwood on October 14. Partnered by Kerrin McEvoy, the Fath gelding turned the seemingly competitive16-runner mile handicap into a procession as, having made smooth progress from the rear of the field, he drew clear inside the final quarter mile. He relished the soft ground that day, but had previously prevailed over the same course and distance on good to firm going, suggesting that he is versatile with regards to underfoot conditions. Don’t Panic began his three-year-old career in the Listed Feilden Stakes over nine furlongs at Newmarket in April but was found wanting in seventh behind Petara Bay. He was subsequently dropped into handicap company and ran three times without success between May and July. A mid-season break seemed to reinvigorate him as he returned on September 4 for the first of his two Goodwood triumphs. Between those successes was a good fifth in a 16-runner Newbury handicap over seven furlongs. Don’t Panic had four starts as a juvenile in 2006. He finished fourth to Invincible Force in the valuable Tattersalls Ireland Sales race on only his second outing, before landing a Warwick maiden by five lengths. His final start of that campaign came in the Group Three Somerville Tattersall Stakes over seven furlongs at Newmarket when he came home eighth of the 10 runners behind Thousand Words. Don’t Panic is due to carry 8st 6lb in the William Hill Lincoln and is priced at 14/1 by the sponsors.
