AT THE RACES TO BROADCAST DAILY CHELTENHAM PREVIEW PROGRAMME AT 8AM

MICHAEL DICKINSON REVEALS CONCERN OVER KAUTO STAR 'PHYSICAL PROBLEM' EXCLUSIVELY TO ATTHERACES.COM

At The Races, the UK and Ireland's most watched dedicated horse racing channel, heralds the forthcoming Cheltenham Festival with exclusive preview content both on air and online.

A special preview programme, Festival Focus, will run every day during the meeting from 8.00am-8.30am, before Channel 4's Morning Line. It will provide viewers with the first news on track conditions each day as Luke Harvey reports with all the latest details. Bookmaker, jockey and trainer interviews will ensure that racing fans have all the up to date information they need each morning prior to heading off to either Cheltenham or the office. The programme will also be available free online to attheraces.com users from 9am daily.

Online now, users can take advantage of the free Cheltenham Festival Preview Programme, with 100 minutes of detailed analysis, archive footage and stats. Host Mike Cattermole is joined by top Irish pundit David Duggan and betting booth guru, Sean Boyce. The exclusive programme is split into 11 bite-size parts, allowing users to target precisely what they want to see.

On top of this the Cheltenham microsite contains comprehensive stats for every race, Mick Fitzgerald's blog, runner profiles by Gareth O'Brien and Robert Cooper as well as exclusive stable tours with David Pipe, Paul Nicholls, Philip Hobbs and Alan King. Website users can also watch free of charge their fancied horses' previous exploits in the ATR Fast Archive, containing over 17,500 UK and Irish Races.

In addition visitors to attheraces.com can read exclusively Michael Dickinson's opinion that Kauto Star showed signs of a physical problem in his last outing - "Kauto Star was lugging left from the second-last at Newbury last time and that would concern me because when a horse does that it indicates he's got a problem."

Rob Dakin, Executive Producer, said: "The Festival Focus programme is an innovation this year that will ensure At The Races viewers hear first about all the morning news and reports on Cheltenham. We'll also be keeping viewers constantly updated with Festival news throughout the morning and via the Racing News programme at 11.00am."

Matthew Taylor, Head of Online, said: "Attheraces.com offers unparalleled coverage of events at Cheltenham both on and off the track. A total of 450,000 people visited our site for Royal Ascot last year, and throughout the Festival we hope even more people will benefit from the service, which has more breadth and information than ever before."

‘SPORT CELEBRATES THE GRAND NATIONAL’ CHARITY BALL

On April 19, 2007, just five days after the running of the 2007 John Smith's Grand National, the first "Sport Celebrates the Grand National" Ball will be staged at the Landmark Hotel, London in the presence of HRH The Princess Royal, Patron of the Spinal Injuries Association (SIA).

Hosted by Aintree Chairman Lord Daresbury, the proceeds of the Ball will benefit two charities: the SIA and Retraining of Racehorses. Sponsored by John Smith's, Aintree Racecourse and now Eon, sponsor of the FA Cup, the evening will bring together representatives of many sports to celebrate the world’s greatest steeplechase.

Memories of 'Nationals past will be stirred by archive BBC footage and some of the great Aintree personalities who will return on the night. Richard Pitman, master of ceremonies, has a special connection with the great race and will be reminiscing with some of the Aintree legends as part of the evening’s programme.

Before the dancing begins, an auction will be held to raise additional funds with some money-can't-buy items including a fabulous Philip Blacker bronze replica of the famous Seagram Grand National perpetual trophy.

The list of items will be published ahead of the event with bids invited from those who may not be able to attend. There are some tables still available at £2,500 for a table of 10.

The Spinal Injuries Association is the national charity which offers vital support to people paralysed through spinal cord injury and Retraining of Racehorses promotes the welfare of horses once their racing days are over by supporting charitable rehabilitation centres.

If you would like to purchase a table of 10, or are interested in advance notice of the auction items, please contact Annie Dodd by e-mail at adodd@bhb.co.uk

PLANS ANNOUNCED FOR NEWMARKET’S INAUGURAL JULY FESTIVAL

This year’s inaugural Newmarket July Festival, which is being developed around the town’s major race meeting, the Ritz Club July Festival, will open on Tuesday 10th July with an open-air classical concert at the Newmarket’s July Course.

Other events announced today include Late Night Shopping in the High Street, “Breakfast in the Paddocks”, which will combine a visit to the gallops and a tour of a top trainer’s yard with a lavish breakfast at the Bedford Lodge Hotel, and a James Bond-themed Sporting Dinner at Swynford Paddocks Hotel.

Over the last three months, a development team made up of local business representatives, racecourse officials and the town council have been working together on the creation of the Festival with which it is hoped that people from all parts of the town will become involved.

Pub landlords will be encouraged to arrange for live music in their pubs that week and other ideas, many of which are maybe for future years, include a funfair, art exhibitions, a Real Ale festival, a fashion show and open air theatre. Discussions have already taken place for Newmarket’s annual carnival to be incorporated into the July Festival from 2008.

Whilst it is recognised that it will take time to build the Newmarket July Festival into something big – the organising team are working with a six -ear plan in mind - the aspiration is for it eventually to become a national and perhaps even an international event.

Robin Millar, a District Councillor and former Mayor of Newmarket, and current member of the Newmarket Festival Development team, said: “I believe that this presents a huge opportunity for our Town to develop something which brings us all together, is fun, exciting and interesting and helps to promote Newmarket to a much wider audience. In time, I hope that it will attract people from across the region to be part of a dynamic Festival week.

“The events that we are announcing today are just a start. What I hope more than anything is that Newmarket’s schools, clubs, shop owners, churches, pub landlords, hoteliers, businesses and other entrepreneurs will see the same potential for a Newmarket Festival as we do. There is so much scope for them to use their own initiative to theme premises, organise their own events and be part of the buzz. The way forward for the Festival is letting everybody have a part in celebrating our Town.”

Gaynor Haxby, Marketing Manager for Newmarket Racecourses and a member of the development team, said: “We are very excited about the prospect of making this week into an event for the whole of Newmarket and, while it will inevitably take at least a couple of years for it to grow into something really substantial, we hope that it will get off to a great start this year.

“Our racing Ritz Club-sponsored racing festival on the July Course attracts more than 10,000 people on each of the Wednesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons. That is a great basis upon which to build something much broader for the whole town to participate in and enjoy.”

The development team will be delighted to help advise on appropriate events and activities that individuals or organisations might wish to stage.
