TEOFILO HEADS 165 VODAFONE DERBY HOPEFULS AFTER FIRST FORFEIT STAGE
The 2007 Vodafone Derby has 165 horses standing their ground after the first forfeit stage for BritainÆs premier Classic (as against 136 last year), which takes place at Epsom Downs on Saturday, June 2.
There are 55 Irish-trained horses remaining (27 more than 12 months ago), alongside six from France and one from Italy in Europe’s richest race, worth £1,250,000.
SUMMARY OF THE KEY CONTENDERS
European champion juvenile Teofilo heads the list of possible runners. Jim Bolger's charge ended a spectacular two-year-old campaign last year when unbeaten in five starts, including twice at the highest level.
The Galileo colt saw off the Aidan O’Brien-trained Holy Roman Emperor to capture both of his Group One successes, with the pair engaging in a thrilling duel for the Darley Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket, in which Teofilo rallied to deny the late flourish of his rival by a head.
With Holy Roman Emperor recently retired to stud, O’Brien has 38 entries going forward, the largest numerical representation of any trainer.
Ireland’s champion trainer has won the Vodafone Derby twice, with Galileo (2001) and High Chaparral (2002), and his strong hand includes MotivatorÆs brother Macarthur, an easy winner of a Navan maiden, Group One Criterium International hero Mount Nelson, Group Two Juddmonte Royal Lodge Stakes victor Admiralofthefleet and Group Two Juddmonte Beresford Stakes winner Eagle Mountain.
Duke Of Marmalade ran an encouraging second to Strategic Prince in the Group Two Veuve Clicqout Vintage Stakes at Goodwood in August, while Anton Chekhov, from the family of Vodafone Oaks winner Time Charter, was impressive when taking a nine-furlong Leopardstown Listed contest in November on his second start.
Peter Chapple-Hyam tasted Vodafone Derby glory with Dr Devious in 1992 and the trainer has Group One Racing Post Trophy winner Authorized still engaged.
Saeed bin Suroor sent out Lammtarra to win the 1995 Vodafone Derby for Saeed Maktoum Al Maktoum and the Godolphin trainer has 13 horses still engaged, headed by Empire Day, who filled third spot behind Passage Of Time in the Group One Criterium de Saint-Cloud, and Strobilus, who was runner-up to Kirklees in the Group One Gran Criterium at San Siro in October.
Godolphin’s contingent also includes Nottingham maiden winner Eastern Anthem, who is by Singspiel out of Godolphin’s 2002 Vodafone Oaks winner Kazzia, as well as UAE 2,000 Guineas third Rallying Cry and easy maiden winners Mofarij, Mariotto and Truly Royal.
Marcus Tregoning experienced Vodafone Derby success last year with Sir Percy and this time the Berkshire-based trainer has Lingfield maiden winner Aajel, from the family of 1989 Vodafone Derby hero Nashwan, and Aqaleem.
Both colts are owned by Hamdan Al Maktoum, whose colours have been carried to success by Nashwan (1989) and Erhaab (1994), and who has seven horses remaining in the Epsom Downs Classic.
The Maktoum family combined (Godolphin, Sheikh Mohammed, Sheikh Ahmed, Sheikh Hamdan, Gainsborough and Princess Haya) account for 35 of the remaining entries.
Sir Michael StouteÆs four Vodafone Derby winners are Shergar (1981), Shahrastani (1986), Kris Kin (2003) and North Light (2004) and he will be looking to make it five with one of his dozen hopefuls.
Adagio won on his first start before running a creditable seventh to Teofilo in the Group One Darley Dewhurst Stakes, while others include comfortable Newcastle maiden victor Al Shemali, Ladies Best, successful in a Newmarket nursery, and Ballymacoll StudÆs once-raced Lang Shining.
Stoute also has the QueenÆs sole representative in AladdinÆs Cave, an unraced son of Rainbow Quest out of Vodafone Oaks runner-up Flight Of Fancy.
Henry Cecil, successful in the Vodafone Derby with Slip Anchor (1985), Reference Point (1987), Commander In Chief (1993) and Oath (1999), has the Niarchos family-owned Ajaan, winner of a Windsor maiden and a half-brother to last year's runner-up Dragon Dancer, along with Many Volumes, who is out of 1997 Vodafone Oaks winner Reams Of Verse.
Strategic Prince was a leading juvenile last season with a brace of Group Two wins and a third-place finish in the Group One Darley Dewhurst Stakes. The colt is one of two entries for Paul Cole who is chasing his second Vodafone Derby success after GenerousÆ 1991 triumph.
Barry Hills - responsible for four runners-up in the Vodafone Derby - has three remaining in the 12-furlong Classic including Celestial Halo, who was fifth on his sole start in the Group Three Acomb Stakes at York last term.
John Oxx and the Aga Khan teamed up for Vodafone Derby glory in 2000 with Sinndar and the pair could join forces again with Mourilyan, third to Soldier Of Fortune in a Navan maiden in October, and the unraced Alarazi. The Aga Khan, the most successful current owner in the Vodafone Derby with four victories, has a total of four horses remaining.
Other Derby-winning trainers with potential runners include William Haggas (1996 Shaamit) who has Eco Centrism and Della Cruscan engaged, while John Dunlop (1978 Shirley Heights, 1994 Erhaab) has Chepstow maiden winner Mutadarrej in the race, and Geoff Wragg (1983 Teenoso) relies on The Carlton Cannes.
Quest For Fame provided Roger Charlton with Vodafone Derby success in 1990 and the trainer is represented by the unbeaten Proponent, six-length winner of the Houghton Conditions Stakes at Newmarket in October, while John Gosden, who enjoyed Derby success with Benny The Dip in 1997, has 10 remaining entries headed by Group One Racing Post Trophy sixth Sunshine Kid.
Michael Bell captured the Vodafone Derby with Motivator in 2005 and the trainer is well represented at this stage with six potential contenders, including Goffs Million runner-up Regime and Nottingham maiden winner Metaphoric, like Motivator a son of Montjeu who is owned by the Royal Ascot Racing Club.
O’Brien also has Soldier Of Fortune, runner-up in the Group One Criterium de Saint-Cloud, as well as Group One Gran Criterium third Chinese Whisper, Yellowstone, who was third to Mount Nelson in the Criterium International, and High Chaparral’s brother The Ethiopian.
The wider world of sport is also represented at this stage. The Ed Dunlop-trained Broomielaw, second on his sole start in a Newmarket maiden in September, is owned by Lady Ferguson, wife of Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson. The colt is a son of Ferguson's record-breaking champion miler, Rock Of Gibraltar.
Slavica Ecclestone, wife of Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone, owns Petara Bay. The Haydock maiden winner is trained at Epsom by Terry Mills.
The six-strong French contingent includes two unraced Aga Khan-owned horses trained by Alain de Royer-Dupre (Shamdinan and Ashkazar) alongside three owned by the Niarchos family (Group Three-placed Holocene, Simbad and the unraced Sagara).
The French sextet is completed by the Sheikh Mohammed-owned Skylancer, an unraced In The Wings half-brother to 1995 Vodafone Oaks winner Moonshell and 2004 King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes winner Doyen. Fabre saddled Visindar, the 2/1 favourite, to finish fifth to Sir Percy in 2006, but Britain's premier Classic has so far eluded the multiple French champion trainer.
The Italian entry is the Emilio Borromeo-trained Candragupta, a Rainbow Quest colt from the family of North Light and Islington.
There are two further opportunities for horses to be added to the Vodafone Derby field. There is an £8,000 second entry stage on April 4, 2007, before the second forfeit stage on May 18, 2007, and a £75,000 supplementary entry stage on May 28, 2007. The confirmation stage is on May 28, 2007 and the final declaration deadline is at 10.00am on May 31, 2007.
SIX OF THE BEST
ANTON CHEKHOV
Montjeu (IRE) - By Charter (Shirley Heights)
Form: 31- Owner: Michael Tabor Trainer: Aidan OÆBrien IRE
Breeder: W And R Barnett Ltd
Aidan O'Brien's juveniles generally improved for their debut outing last term and Anton Chekhov, a 625,000 guineas yearling, followed that trend. Third to the impressive Consul General in a good quality Cork maiden in September, the Montjeu colt landed the spoils in impressive fashion on his only subsequent start in the nine-furlong Listed Eyrefield Stakes at Leopardstown in November, scoring by four and a half lengths from three-time winner Star Inside. The Derby trip should be ideal for this potentially high-class colt who is a half-brother to Group Two Lonsdale Cup winner First Charter and Italian Derby runner-up Private Charter, from the wonderful family of Vodafone Oaks winner Time Charter.
AUTHORIZED
Montjeu (IRE) - Funsie (FR) (Saumarez)
Form: 31- Owner: Saleh Al Homaizi & Imad Al Sagar Trainer: Peter Chapple-Hyam
Breeder: Marengo Investments and Knighton House Ltd and Michael Kinane
Authorized followed an encouraging third to Teslin in the Haynes, Hanson And Clark Conditions Stakes over a mile at Newbury in September with victory over that same course and distance in the Group One Racing Post Trophy the following month. Ridden by Frankie Dettori, the Montjeu colt powered through the heavy going for a length and a quarter defeat of Charlie Farnsbarns, with several Vodafone Derby hopefuls in arrears. The contest has been won in recent times by Vodafone Derby winners High Chaparral and Motivator, and Authorized looks well up to standard.
EAGLE MOUNTAIN
Rock Of Gibraltar (IRE) - Masskana (IRE) (Darshaan)
Form : 512214- Owner: Derrick Smith, Sue Magnier, Michael Tabor
Trainer: Aidan OÆBrien IRE Breeder: London Thoroughbred Services
Eagle Mountain scored a well deserved Group Two triumph in the Juddmonte Beresford Stakes at the Curragh in October, relishing the step up to a mile to score impressively by seven lengths. The colt had previously exhibited a high level of ability, failing by only a head against the brilliant Teofilo in the Group Two Futurity Stakes at the Curragh in August before finishing a staying-on second to the then unbeaten Vital Equine in the seven-furlong Group Two Champagne Stakes at York. Eagle MountainÆs final juvenile start was one of promise ahead of his three-year-old campaign as he overcame slight trouble in running to finish a staying-on fourth to Authorized in the Group One Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster.
MACARTHUR
Montjeu (IRE) - Out West (USA) Gone West (USA)
Form: 1- Owner: Derrick Smith, Sue Magnier, Michael Tabor Trainer: Aidan O'Brien IRE
Breeder: Deerfield Farm
Macarthur may have only had one start in his life but he has already made more than a ripple in the ante-post market for the Vodafone Derby. A full-brother to Motivator, hero of the 2005 Vodafone Derby, the Montjeu colt boasts a Classic pedigree and should relish the mile and a half test at Epsom. Seamus Heffernan partnered the bay to an easy victory on his belated racecourse debut in a mile Navan maiden on October 25. Sent off the 7/4 favourite, Macarthur made light of 16 rivals and heavy ground to draw clear of his nearest pursuer, Copper Bell, who in turn had 13 lengths to spare over the third.
STRATEGIC PRINCE
Dansili - Ausherra (USA) (Diesis)
Form: 15113- Owner: HRH Sultan Ahmad Shah Trainer: Paul Cole
Breeder: The Ausherra Partnership
From a top-class family, being out of a Group Three-placed sister to Vodafone Oaks heroine Ramruma, Strategic Prince lived up to his heritage last term with two victories in Group Two company and a fine third to Teofilo in the Group One Darley Dewhurst Stakes. Success in the TNT July Stakes at NewmarketÆs July Festival announced the colt as a high-class individual and he confirmed his ability when defying a 3lb penalty to hand Duke Of Marmalade a neck defeat in the Group Two Veuve Cliquot Vintage Stakes at Goodwood, a race won in recent times by subsequent Vodafone Derby winners Sir Percy and Dr Devious.
TEOFILO (IRE)
Galileo (IRE) - Speirbhean (IRE) (Danehill (USA))
Form: 11111- Owner: Jackie Bolger Trainer: Jim Bolger IRE Breeder: Jim Bolger
Teofilo has been a solid winter favourite for the Vodafone Derby since completing a five-timer in the Group One Darley Dewhurst Stakes with a battling head defeat of fellow dual Group One winner Holy Roman Emperor. That defeat of a high-class field of juveniles over seven furlongs of NewmarketÆs Rowley Mile, along with an earlier victory over Holy Roman Emperor in the Group One Laing OÆRourke National Stakes at the Curragh, earned the brilliant unbeaten colt the accolade of Champion Juvenile and prompted talk of a Triple Crown bid not achieved since the great Nijinsky in 1970.

CECIL QUARTET AMONG 73 FILLIES ENTERED FOR THE VODAFONE OAKS
The Vodafone Oaks, first run at Epsom Downs in 1779, takes place at the historic Surrey venue on Friday, June 1, and promises plenty after receiving 73 entries.
There are 15 Irish-trained fillies entered in the 12-furlong Classic, worth £375,000, alongside one from France.
SUMMARY OF THE POSSIBLE KEY CONTENDERS
Henry Cecil, the most successful trainer in the modern history of the Vodafone Oaks, could bid for a remarkable eighth victory in the Epsom Classic as he has made four entries.
The master of Warren Place has not tasted Classic success since Love Divine captured the Vodafone Oaks in 2000 but his quartet is headed by Passage Of Time, winner of three of her four starts including the Group One Criterium de Saint-Cloud in France over 10 furlongs in November, in which she beat several well-regarded colts.
Light Shift, from the family of Cecil's Group One-winning mare Shiva, landed a mile Newmarket maiden on her third start and looks the sort to progress at three, while the maidens Brisk Breeze and Elounda are also entered.
Aidan O'Brien is the trainer with the greatest numerical representation as he has seven fillies engaged, including several with clear Classic pedigrees.
The unraced Sadler's Wells filly All My Loving is a sister to Quarter Moon and Yesterday, runners-up in the Vodafone Oaks in 2002 and 2003 respectively, while Cherry Hinton is out of the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Urban Sea and is thus a half-sister to 2001 Vodafone Derby hero Galileo, Group One victor Black Sam Bellamy, and the Vodafone Oaks-placed fillies Melikah and All Too Beautiful.
The Ballydoyle trainer has landed the Vodafone Oaks three times, most recently with Alexandrova in 2006, and his contingent also includes Diamond Necklace, a half-sister to 2005 Prix du Jockey-Club winner Shamardal, Rosetta Stone, an unraced sister to St Leger winner Brian Boru, as well as Leopardstown maiden winner Uimhir A Haon, who is a Montjeu half-sister to Group One Coronation Stakes heroine Maids Causeway.
Saeed bin Suroor has saddled two Vodafone Oaks winners for Godolphin in Moonshell (1995) and Kazzia (2002), and he has three entries, headed by easy Newmarket maiden winner Measured Tempo who is a half-sister to Prix du Jockey-Club winner Anabaa Blue, from the family of Urban Sea and King's Best.
The Godophin trio also includes the unraced Salsa Verdi, by Giant's Causeway out of 1998 1000 Guineas winner and beaten Vodafone Derby favourite Cape Verdi, as well as Midsummer Fun.
Jeremy Noseda has entered an interesting trio that includes Group One Meon Valley Stud Fillies' Mile winner Simply Perfect, alongside the maidens Loulwa and Cut The Cake.
Clive Brittain enjoyed Vodafone Oaks success with the exceptional User Friendly in 1992 and he has Darrfonah, runner-up to the brilliant Finsceal Beo in the Group One Prix Marcel Boussac at Longchamp in October. The veteran handler's trio also includes Listed-placed Guarantia from the family of Needle Gun, Warrsan and Luso.
Short Skirt finished third in the 2006 Vodafone Oaks for trainer Sir Michael Stoute and that filly's sister Shorthand could bid to go a couple of places better. Winner of a Nottingham maiden on her first start, Shorthand then went to Newmarket for the Group Two Rockfel Stakes in October when she came home fourth to Finsceal Beo.
Stoute's contingent also incorporates the once-raced Dance Of Light and Eternal Path as well as Goffs Fillies Five Hundred third Cliche.
Barry Hills has four entries including the Montjeu filly Sues Surprise who was runner-up to Passage Of Time in the Listed Montrose Fillies' Stakes over a mile at Newmarket in October.
Hollow Ridge was second to Party in a seven-furlong Newbury Listed contest and is a daughter of Hills' Irish Oaks winner Bolas, while Cumin was third in the Group Three Prestige Stakes, and the Hamdan Al Maktoum-owned Zifaaf is unraced.
Eswarah gave Michael Jarvis a taste of Vodafone Oaks success in 2005 and the Newmarket handler has six entered including the once-raced Singspiel fillies Fragrancy and Silkwood - both Polytrack maiden winners - and the Sinndar filly Sunlight, successful on her second start at Lingfield in October.
Ed Dunlop took the Classic with Ouija Board in 2004 and his pair consists of Lingfield maiden winners Dalvina and Pairumani Princess, while Jim Bolger, who captured the prize with Jet Ski Lady in 1991 has entered the Galileo filly Luminous One, third to Vodafone Derby hope Anton Chekhov in a Leopardstown Listed contest, and Christina's Letter.
Mick Channon saddled Treat to finish runner-up in the Group One Meon Valley Stud Fillies' Mile. The trainer's quintet also includes Sweet Lilly, winner of the Listed Silver Tankard Stakes at Pontefract on her final start, and also fourth to Simply Perfect in the Group Two May Hill Stakes.
John Gosden also has five entries including Thinking Positive, a half-sister to 1998 Vodafone Oaks third Midnight Line, and Set The Scene, a Sadler's Wells filly out of 2002 Irish Oaks winner Margarula.
The French-trained entry is the Aga Khan-owned Khazaria, trained by Alain de Royer-Dupre and an unraced half-sister to Group One Grand Prix de Paris winner Khalkevi. The owner also has the John Oxx-trained Timarwa, a daughter of multiple Group One-winning mare Timarida, along with maiden winners Hasanka and Four Sins.
The Stan Moore-trained Satulagi was fourth in the Meon Valley Stud Fillies' Mile, while second-season trainer William Knight could have his first Vodafone Oaks runner with Shimoni, and Roy Kvisla's Puggy, third to Finsceal Beo in the Group Two Rockfel Stakes, is also engaged.
Sir Mark Prescott saddled his first Classic winner when Confidential Lady took the Group One Prix de Diane last term and he has entered Algarade, from the family of Last Second, Alborada and Albanova, while Mark Johnston has Group Three Sweet Solera Stakes runner-up Princess Taise engaged.
There is a supplementary entry stage for the Vodafone Oaks on May 26, costing £20,000.
The fillies' Classic is run on the first day of the Vodafone Derby Festival, Friday, June 1, which is Vodafone Ladies Day.

TEOFILO HEADS 86 FOR STAN JAMES 2000 GUINEAS
Teofilo, unbeaten in five starts and officially rated the best two-year-old in Europe last season, heads 86 entries for the £350,000 Stan James 2000 Guineas, run on Saturday, May 5, 2007.
The exciting Jim Bolger-trained colt rounded off last year with a head defeat of Holy Roman Emperor in the Group One Darley Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket on Champions’ Day in October, having previously scored in Group One company when collecting the National Stakes at the Curragh.
Teofilo is 6/4 favourite with the sponsors, Stan James, to retain his unbeaten record over the NatWest Rowley Mile at Newmarket on the first Saturday in May.
Holy Roman Emperor, a dual Group One winner last term, will not renew rivalry with Teofilo having been retired to stud. However, Aidan O’Brien, seeking his fifth training success in the Stan James 2000 Guineas and his third in succession following on from Footstepsinthesand (2005) and George Washington (2006), has 17 other entries in the Newmarket Classic to choose from.
The powerful contingent from Ireland’s champion trainer also includes Group Two Royal Lodge Stakes victor Admiralofthefleet, Eagle Mountain, successful in the Group Two Beresford Stakes at the Curragh, the 2006 Group Two Mill Reef Stakes winner Excellent Art, and Mount Nelson, victorious in the Group One Criterium International at Saint-Cloud, as well as several unexposed performers.
Godolphin, the other great power of European racing, is represented by eight entries as it bids to follow on from the victories of Mark Of Esteem (1996) and Island Sands (1999) in the mile Classic. The Godolphin octet includes Dijeerr and Mythical Kid, who were first and second in the Group Three Stan James Horris Hill Stakes at Newbury in October, as well as Eastern Anthem, a facile winner on his only start at Nottingham last season and a son of Godolphin’s 2002 1000 Guineas heroine Kazzia, and Strobilus, runner-up in the Group One Gran Criterium at San Siro on his final start of 2006.
Sir Michael Stoute has trained five previous winners of the Stan James 2000 Guineas - more than any other current trainer - and the master of Newmarket’s Freemason Lodge yard has three entries in 2007. The Stoute trio consists of Adagio, seventh behind Teofilo in the Darley Dewhurst Stakes, and the unexposed duo of Al Shemali and Al Tharib.
It is 15 years since Peter Chapple-Hyam sent out the Lester Piggott-ridden Rodrigo De Triano to win the 2000 Guineas but he looks to hold a strong hand in 2007 with four entries. His quartet includes Dutch Art, who was undefeated in four starts last season including the Group Two Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot, the Group One Prix Morny at Deauville and Newmarket’s Group One Shadwell Middle Park Stakes. The colt is 7/1 second favourite for the Classic with Stan James.
Chapple-Hyam’s other entries are Authorized, triumphant in the Group One Racing Post Trophy at Newbury in October on only his second start, Group Two Richmond Stakes winner Hamoody and Tariq, who has not raced since finishing a staying-on third in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot in June.
A leading contender is the Paul Cole-trained Strategic Prince, successful in the Group Two TNT July Stakes at Newmarket’s Ritz Club July Festival and also the Group Two Vintage Stakes at Goodwood before finishing third behind Teofilo and Holy Roman Emperor in the Group One Darley Dewhurst Stakes.
International interest is provided by South African trainer Mike de Kock, who has entered Drayton, a dual Listed winner in Ireland last season when trained by Tommy Stack and fourth in the Listed Land Rover Al Quoz Sprint over six furlongs at Nad Al Sheba, Dubai, on March 8.
The Stan James 2000 Guineas is on the first day of the Stan James Guineas Festival which concludes on Sunday, May 6. Supplementary entries may be made at the six-day confirmation stage on April 30 at a cost of £25,000.
Michael Prosser, Newmarket’s Director of Racing, said: "The Stan James 2000 Guineas, the first Classic of the Flat season, is always a superb race and we are delighted with the quality of this year’s entry.
"Teofilo and Dutch Art looked superstars in the making when taking the Darley Dewhurst Stakes and the Shadwell Middle Park Stakes respectively on the NatWest Rowley Mile in October and it will be tremendous to see them defend their unbeaten records back here on May 5."
Stan James betting - 6/4 Teofilo, 7/1 Dutch Art, 12/1 Mount Nelson, Strategic Prince, 16/1 Adagio, Eagle Mountain, Haatef, 20/1 Authorized, Duke Of Marmalade, 25/1 bar.

FINSCEAL BEO TOPS 70 IN STAN JAMES 1000 GUINEAS
Finsceal Beo, rated the top juvenile filly in Europe last season, heads a 70-strong entry for the £350,000 Stan James 1000 Guineas, run at Newmarket on Sunday, May 6, 2007.
The daughter of Mr Greeley, trained by Jim Bolger in Ireland, was mightily impressive when recording a five-length success in the Group One Prix Marcel Boussac Royal Barriere de Deauville at Longchamp, and ended her two-year-old campaign with a decisive victory in the Group Two Rockfel Stakes at Newmarket on October 14, defeating Rahiyah by three lengths.
She received plenty of plaudits at the end of last season, including the Cartier Two-Year-Old Filly award, and is 7/2 joint favourite with the sponsors to win the Stan James 1000 Guineas.
Rahiyah’s trainer, Jeremy Noseda, looks to hold a strong hand in the Newmarket Classic, having also entered the other 7/2 joint favourite, Sander Camillo, who spreadeagled the opposition in the Group Two Cherry Hinton Stakes at Newmarket in July, and Simply Perfect, victorious in the Group One Fillies’ Mile at Ascot on her final outing last season, beating Treat by a length and a half, with English Ballet three quarters of a length away in third.
Ireland’s champion trainer Aidan O’Brien, who hit the bullseye with Virginia Waters in 2005, is responsible for six entries, including Theann, fifth to the Richard Hannon-trained Indian Ink in the Group One Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket last term, and the beautifully bred but unraced Cherry Hinton, a daughter of 1993 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner Urban Sea and a half-sister to 2001 Epsom Derby hero Galileo.
Successful with the brilliant Cape Verdi in 1998 and Kazzia four years later, Godolphin has two contenders in Measured Tempo, who made a bright start to her racing career when taking a Newmarket maiden by three lengths in October, and Malaath, victorious at the first time of asking on the Polytrack at Lingfield the same month.
It is 27 years since Quick As Lightning gave John Dunlop his first Stan James 1000 Guineas winner - he has landed the mile Classic three times in all - and Group Three Princess Margaret Stakes victor Scarlet Runner features among three possible runners for the Arundel trainer this year.
Sir Michael Stoute has taken the fillies’ Classic twice previously and could bid for a third victory with Shorthand and Kaseema, fourth and seventh respectively to Finsceal Beo in the Rockfel Stakes when last seen, while fellow Newmarket trainer Clive Brittain also has two Stan James 1000 Guineas wins to his name and his three entries include Darrfonah, runner-up behind Finsceal Beo in the Prix Marcel Boussac Royal Barriere de Deauville.
French handler Criquette Head-Maarek has captured the Stan James 1000 Guineas on three occasions and is represented by Magic America, sixth to Indian Ink in the Cheveley Park Stakes before landing the Group Three Prix Miesque at Maisons-Laffitte, and Green Lyons, a six-length winner on heavy ground at the same track in November. Freddie Head - successful as a jockey on his sister’s Ma Biche (1983) and Miesque (1987) - has entered debut scorer Rakiza and Nuqoosh.
Other fascinating entries include the Brian Meehan-trained Rainbow Promises, a facile winner on her debut on Lingfield’s Polytrack in October. The daughter of Came Home barely came out of second gear to score by five lengths from Laura’s Best - in the process taking nearly half a second off the juvenile course record for six furlongs - and has been backed into 10/1 with the sponsors to add Classic glory to her CV.
Miss Beatrix, from the Kevin Prendergast stable, just got the better of Mick Channon’s Silca Chiave in the Group One Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh in August, Arch Swing, trained by John Oxx, landed both starts last season at the Curragh in good style, while Marco Botti’s Sesmen looked a filly to follow when taking the Group Three Prestige Stakes at Goodwood in August.
The Stan James 1000 Guineas takes place over the NatWest Rowley Mile on the second day of the Stan James Guineas Festival, Sunday, May 6. Supplementary entries may be made at the six-day confirmation stage on April 30, at a cost of £25,000.
Michael Prosser, Newmarket’s Director of Racing, commented: "Last year’s Stan James 1000 Guineas was truly memorable thanks to Speciosa’s victory and I am sure that this year’s renewal will be equally thrilling.
"Finsceal Beo and Sander Camillo both looked potential world-beaters when scoring at Newmarket last season and it will be fantastic to see them go head to head on the NatWest Rowley Mile on May 6."
