KAUTO HEADS FINAL DECLARATIONS FOR TOTESPORT GOLD CUP

The countdown to the 2007 totesport Gold Cup began ticking earlier today when trainers made declarations for racing’s greatest level-weights steeplechase.

Nineteen horses stood their ground at today’s 48-hour stage for the £425,000 chase, and, while five were not declared, three of those will tackle tomorrow’s Ryanair Chase - Our Vic, Billyvoddan and Crozan. Racing Demon has been declared for both races, while the Venetia Williams-trained Nil Desperandum and Paul Nolan’s Kill Devil Hill are the other two horses not going for Gold.

Kauto Star, strong favourite at 6-4 with the sponsor for the totesport Gold Cup, heads a team of three from Paul Nicholls’ Somerset stable. Ruby Walsh rides Kauto Star, Sam Thomas is on My Will and conditional jockey Liam Heard teams up with Neptune Collonges.

Robert Alner has declared Kingscliff (Robert Walford) and The Listener (Daryl Jacob), and there will be three challengers from Ireland - Beef Or Salmon (Andrew McNamara), Cane Brake (David Casey) and Forget The Past (Barry Geraghty) who was third in the contest 12 months ago.

France has a strong contender in L’Ami, who could be Mick Fitzgerald’s final ride in the great race.

Exotic Dancer (Tony McCoy), State Of Play (Paul Moloney) and Halcon Genelardais (Choc Thornton) are other fancied runners who remain in contention.

France is also represented by the Richard Chotard-trained outsiders Sybellius d’Artaix (James Davies), who runs in today’s Seasons Holidays Queen Mother Champion Chase, and Marble Garden (John Kington), who was unplaced in yesterday’s Smurfit Kappa Champion Hurdle.

The latest prices from sponsors totesport are: 6-4 Kauto Star, 4 Exotic Dancer, 8 The Listener, 9 State Of Play, 14 Beef Or Salmon, Cane Brake, L’Ami, 16 Forget The Past, My Will, 28 Halcon Genelardais, Racing Demon, 40 bar

GROUND NO PROBLEM FOR MY THREE IN TOTESPORT GOLD CUP, SAYS NICHOLLS

Paul Nicholls was in relaxed mood at Cheltenham today, hours after declaring three horses for the totesport Gold Cup.

“I’m more nervous about running Denman in the Royal & SunAlliance Chase, than anything else,” admitted Nicholls.

“My totesport Gold Cup horses are all in good order this morning and I’m delighted that the ground is drying out.

“The last thing I wanted was to see Kauto Star running in a bog, and I’m sure Neptune Collonges will be better for running on a decent surface. My Will wouldn’t want it fast, but he’s fine on half decent ground.”

Kauto Star, the mount of Ruby Walsh on Friday, is 6-4 favourite with Gold Cup sponsors totesport. Nicholls said: “Kauto Star has won five races on the bounce and has done the talking himself. I think this track will bring out the best in him, and he’s in really good form. At Newbury on his latest start it was good to see him put his head down and go and win his race.”

TOTESPORT GOLD CUP STORY THAT STARTED AT CARLISLE

A graduation chase held at Carlisle that attracted a mere three runners started a trail that culminates in Friday’s totesport Gold Cup.

At the time it seemed like a non-event. The Tony McCoy-ridden 2-5 favourite Exotic Dancer was expected to win easily, but was beaten 28 lengths by Turpin Green - it was the same week as Bonfire Night and it seemed another reputation had gone up in smoke.

Yet five days later Exotic Dancer reappeared, equipped with a pair of sheepskin cheekpieces and a set of ear plugs, and landed Cheltenham’s Paddy Power Gold Cup. Further Cheltenham successes came in the boylesports.com Handicap Chase and the Letheby & Christopher Chase, victories either side of a second to Kauto Star in the King George VI Chase.

Surprisingly the horse that beat Exotic Dancer so easily at Carlisle has failed to score since. Turpin Green was pulled up in State Of Play’s Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup, then finished second to The Outlier in Haydock’s Peter Marsh Chase.

Barry Simpson, racing manager to Exotic Dancer’s owner, Sir Robert Ogden, is glad he could not get to Carlisle for that day in November. He says: “The result at Carlisle has to be totally dismissed. You can put up all sorts of arguments about whether Turpin Green can uphold that form, but that is true of other matches in the race.

“Exotic Dancer’s preparation has gone extremely well and ground conditions won’t make any difference. The totesport Gold Cup only became a possibility when he won the Letheby & Christopher Chase - that convinced us. Up until then we had never thought of him as a Gold Cup horse.”

What about Turpin Green, who brushed Exotic Dancer aside at the Cumbrian track. Trainer Nicky Richards says: “He’s in grand order, even though he’s had a pretty disappointing season. He set off well at Carlisle, then made a mistake in the Hennessy and was pulled up. We gave him a break and then brought him back in the Haydock race on ground that didn’t suit. He ran well in the conditions.”

FIRST RACE QUOTES
THE BALLYMORE PROPERTIES NOVICES’ HURDLE

MAGUIRE CHANGES HOBBS’ LUCK

Racing’s luck pendulum swung in Philip Hobbs’ favour when Massini’s Maguire won the opener on day two of the Cheltenham Festival - it was a dramatic change in fortune following a miserable first day for the Somerset-based trainer.

Hobbs said: “We thought yesterday we had our best two chances of the week by a long, long way, and having seen them beaten we thought that was the end of this year’s Cheltenham - and now we’ve won the first race on the second day.

“He [Massini’s Maguire] ended up in front because they didn’t go too fast and it suited him very well. He’s always run well here at Cheltenham and earlier this season he beat Wichita Lineman so why he should be 20-1 today I don’t know. Sometimes he’s been a bit inconsistent, but I don’t know why because he’s certainly genuine.”

Owner Alan Peterson was also gaining compensation following the defeat of his Fair Along in The Irish Independent Arkle Trophy yesterday.

Hobbs said Fair Along will be back at Cheltenham on Friday for the Vincent O’Brien County Handicap Hurdle, while he also had news of Detroit City, beaten favourite in yesterday’s Smurfit Kappa Champion Hurdle.

Hobbs said: “We cantered him this morning because we wanted to scope him. He ate up last night and was really fresh when he cantered and scoped absolutely clean - so for now we are absolutely stumped.”

Massini’s Maguire is a chaser for the future, added Hobbs, who said Aintree would be his next target. Cashmans Bookmakers rate Massini’s Maguire a 20-1 shot for next year’s Royal & Sunalliance Chase.

The winning rider Richard Johnson: “He's done it really well. It's amazing what [difference] a day can make - yesterday didn't really go well.

“He's had some on and off days really, but he's produced it on the right day. The run-in seemed a very, very long way. You always want the winning post to come when you're in front up this hill.

“It shows the ground has probably dried up, and we've ended up making nearly all. He's a real, brave little horse. He's won twice round here now and seems to love the hill."

SO CLOSE FOR TIDAL BAY

The Howard Johnson-trained Tidal Bay battled on to finish within in a neck of long-time leader Massini’s Maguire in the opening Ballymore Properties Novices’ Hurdle.

“He came up the hill well and in another five yards would have had the winner,” said Johnson.

Tidal Bay’s owner Graham Wylie added: “Paddy (Brennan) said that the horse battled on gamely and I’m very happy for that. He was second in the bumper at Aintree last year so we’d consider going there again but we also have Key Time for there as he prefers a flat track.”

Edward O’Grady, who saddled third-placed Catch Me, commented: “You’re never happy when you’re beaten but he ran well.”

ARAN CONCERTO - THE BEATEN FAVOURITE

Noel Meade, the trainer of the 5/2 favourite Aran Concerto who finished fifth, reported: “He was very disappointing. Tony (McCoy) said Aran Concerto did not settle and he felt, if he rode the horse again, that he would have him up with the leaders or walk him out of the gate (hold him up).

“Tony said he was in the middle and the horse would not relax - tanking along. Aran Concerto stumbled after the second last hurdle. Tony described him as very babyish.

“He thought yesterday’s opening race might have suited him better because there was a better gallop.”

INTERFERENCE ACCIDENTAL

A Stewards’ Enquiry was held after the running of the Ballymore Properties Novices’ Hurdle under Rule 171 (3).

The stewards looked into possible interference caused by the second, Tidal Bay, to the third, Catch Me.

It was held by the stewards that the interference was accidental and that Tidal Bay had not improved his finishing position. No further action was taken.

GROUND - JOCKEYS’ REACTION

After the running of the first race on day two of The Festival 2007, the Ballymore Properties Novices’ Hurdle, the following jockeys gave their reaction as to the state of the ground:

Richard Johnson, rider of the winner Massini’s Maguire said: “I’d call it good to soft, good in places - perfect ground.”

Mick Fitzgerald, rider of Duc De Regniere, said: “Good to soft.”

Davy Russell, rider of Johnnie Dillinger, said: “On the dead side.”

Noel Fehily, rider of My Turn Now, said: “On the dead side of good.”

Tom O’Brien, rider of Santando, said: “Soft.”

Davy Condon, rider of Scotsirish, said: “A lot drier than yesterday - nice ground.”

Timmy Murphy, rider of Raslan, said: “The same as yesterday.”

KING FOR A DAY IN GUINNESS AWARD

The public voted Alan King the winner of the Guinness Festival Award on day one of the meeting after his My Way De Solzen triumphed in The Irish Independent Arkle Trophy.

King’s decision to opt for the two-mile contest, rather than the longer Royal & SunAlliance Chase, was justified when My Way De Solzen scored in easy style - the victory came 12 months after the horse had won the Ladbrokes World Hurdle over three miles.

Judges Tanya Stevenson, Alan Lee and David Ord nominated King plus John Carr and Philip Carberry, trainer and jockey of Smurfit Kappa Champion Hurdle winner Sublimity, to win the first day’s award.

The three names were announced over public address systems, on Festival radio and on Cheltenham’s microsite before voting took place.

Those who would like to take part over the remaining three days should text Festival, followed by A, B or C to 80818. Votes can be registered between 4pm and 7pm on the first three days of the meeting, and between 3.30pm and 4.30pm on Friday.

Everyone texting a vote will be entered into a daily prize draw to win a trip to the Punchestown Festival, including return flights and an overnight stay at the luxurious Killashee House Hotel.

The Guinness Festival Awards have been a part of the meeting for 11 years and are designed to honour the person who makes the most outstanding contribution to the occasion in the first three races each day.

SECOND RACE QUOTES
ROYAL & SUNALLIANCE CHASE

DENMAN PERKS UP PUNTERS

Denman, the week’s banker for many at Cheltenham this year, returned home to a huge roar after a masterly performance in the Royal & SunAlliance Chase, when he never gave casue for concern to those that had supported the 6/5 favourite.

Ruby Walsh coasted home 10 lengths clear of Snowy Morning on the seven-year-old to land a huge gamble.

“We knew he was decent and I said to Ruby to make plenty of use of his class and jumping and he’s done that,” said winning trainer Paul Nicholls.

“He’s just a very good horse and you always want them to do what you believe they can - until they pass the post you are not there.

“It is a relief. You start to believe all the rubbish written by the doubters, but we've always known we had a good horse. I knew we had him right today - he's never been better.

“He looked great, and he just gallops and jumps. He's still a big baby and he will still improve. Today has always been the plan - starting off the first day at Exeter to winning today, that has been the target all season.”

Walsh added: “He’s improved so much and is a great jumper. He never lost an inch going down the back and we knew he’d jink going past the stands, that’s him and it’s just what he does.

“I didn’t mind whether I was sat in first place or seventh, I was just concerned that they went a good even gallop. He was as good on this ground today as he had been any day so I don’t think it matters and he could be a Gold Cup horse. You just never know about that extra quarter mile, remember Florida Pearl won this easily.”

"He's some horse! He's a quirky, lairy horse. I had him grand, settled early on, and then Bobby McNally missed one on front of me, and he got running a bit keen. But he's a hell of a horse. Graham nearly fell, I got left in front, and he was half pulling up.”

Denman is as short as 5/1 for next year’s totesport Cheltenham Gold Cup with Boylesports and William Hill, who offer just 7/4 that Paul Nicholls will train the 2008 victor.”

DENMANIA! ‘ARRY’S WON (JUST UNDER) A MILLION!

Harry Findlay, joint-owner of Royal & SunAlliance Chase winner Denman, reckons he won “just under £1 million” in bets when his brilliant horse cruised to victory.

Findlay, a professional punter who lives near Bath and shares ownership of the seven-year-old with Paul Barber, was surrounded by friends as Ruby Walsh rode into the winner’s enclosure. Cries of “Denmania,” and “Ruby, Ruby, Ruby,” rang out before Findlay launched into a staccato analysis of the race.

Top of the people he wanted to thank was Alan King, trainer of My Way De Solzen, who was Denman’s biggest rival until being switched to The Irish Independent Arkle Trophy.

Findlay said: “Ruby was so confident and rode this horse so confidently. I was sure they would take us on and they did, but Ruby kept him out of trouble. Before the race I thought Aces Four [Fourth] was the danger, and they were in front when he [Denman] did that little dwell [rounding the top bend] which he has done before. But then he ran on and it was a war, even though you know Aces Four isn’t going to stay.

“Denman’s so safe at his fences and it was a real proper race. The ante-post gamble was all down to Alan King. After the Festival last year there were only two horses that could win this race, and suddenly My Way De Solzen’s not running and we’ve had 10s, 7s, 6s and all prices down. Thanks to Alan King we’ve landed a massive touch.

“Full credit to Alan King because he’s got a brilliant horse and now he and Denman are going to take each other on next year. And if Kauto Star is there as well what a thrill it will be to watch them.

“Now I’m going to lump on Well Chief [for the Seasons Holidays Queen Mother Champion Chase].”

MORNING AND JOHN BOTH RUN WELL

Both Snowy Morning and According To John both pleased their trainers following the Royal & SunAlliance Chase.

Snowy Morning stayed on well to come home 10 lengths behind the impressive winner Denman.

His trainer Willie Mullins said of the 10/1 chance: “That was a terrific run - I’m delighted.

“When Cailin Alainn fell on the first circuit he just lost his concentration and lost his place.

“But I am delighted with the way he ran and the way he jumped. Before the race, I thought with a bit of luck we might be placed.

“He will probably run again this year. We will have a look but he could go to both Fairyhouse and Punchestown.

“The winner looked fantastic.”

A further three-and-a-half lengths back in third was According To John, a 66/1 chance, and his trainer Nicky Richards was in great spirits: “According To John has run a great race. I am very pleased.

“He might have finished second but for making a mistake near the finish but I am very pleased as I would have been happy if he’d finished in the first six.

“Today he travelled well, jumped well and really stayed on. He has not had much racing and this race should have helped to toughen him up a bit.

“It will be ground dependent where we go with him as a big horse like him wouldn’t want it too firm. He could go for the Scottish Grand National and we will also look at Sandown.

“He could a Grand National horse one day. The winner is some horse, isn’t he?”

Race 3 - Seasons Holidays Queen Mother Champion Chase

VOY POR USTEDES IS JUST CHAMPION

Voy Por Ustedes recorded his second Festival success when collecting the Seasons Holidays Queen Mother Champion Chase for owner Sir Robert Ogden, trainer Alan King and jockey Robert Thornton.

The winner, successful in last season’s The Irish Independent Arkle Trophy, had a length and a half to spare over Dempsey with River City five lengths back in third.

Winning trainer Alan King said: “I had been looking forward to running him today.

“He was in great nick and the drying ground was just perfect for him.

“I was slightly nervous when he made a mistake two out but I always knew he would stay on - he gets the trip really well.

“He is a very lively horse at home and does too much on the gallops but fortunately he switches off and relaxes when he gets to the races.

“I am lucky to have such good horses. This was a real team effort and everyone involved with the horse deserves lots of credit.

“We will be having dinner with Dinah (Nicholson) tonight as we always do on the Wednesday of Cheltenham and I am sure it will be a good celebration.

“Good horses are easy to train - you have their whole season mapped out - and it was always the intention to give Voy Por Ustedes four runs this season.

“It was unfortunate that Well Chief fell but he would have wanted to be good, wouldn’t he?

"Wonderful! It hasn't sunk in - I'm absolutely thrilled. I knew he was in wonderful form and the preparation has gone great. One thing he does is get a trip very well, and Choc gave him another wonderful ride."

“Chocolate is a good all-rounder. He is relaxed and is always in the right place at the right time.”

Thornton added: “I'm very happy. I can't believe it - it hasn't sunk in yet. To be fair to myself and a few others, we picked up going to two out, and I felt my lad kept picking up to the line.”

Voy Por Ustedes is rated at 4/1 (Boylesports, Ladbrokes, Paddy Power, totesport), 5/1 (Blue Square, William Hill) and 7/1 (Stan James) to repeat his win next year.

CHAMPION JOY FOR VOY - PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

Voy Por Ustedes continued an excellent Festival for trainer Alan King and jockey Robert Thornton when running out an impressive winner of the Seasons Holidays Queen Mother Champion Chase.

“Any winner here is superb but I enjoyed this more than My Way De Solzen’s success yesterday because I’ve been more relaxed all morning and all day,” said King. “Yesterday the pressure was really on.

“It might have been a blessing when Voy Por Ustedes unseated at Newbury last time. At least we got a day out and it took the fizz out of his head although obviously I’d have preferred it not to have happened. It was annoying but not the be-all and end-all, today was what mattered

“This has been a perfect racing surface for a Festival, it’s a level playing field for everyone except the real soft ground specialists. He may go to Aintree for the two and a half mile race but I’m pretty sure he won’t head to Punchestown, last year Sir Robert Ogden didn’t want me to enter him there.”

Thornton added: “I noticed Well Chief falling but you have to ride your own race. Thinking that you will win just because he has fallen is stupid although it is a trap you can fall into. As with yesterday, I just kept remembering Alan saying to me ‘don’t panic’. I had those words ringing in my ears.

“We quickened between the third last and second last and I could see from a long way out that it was going to be difficult there because it’s a tricky fence. I knew it was a matter of holding on and getting from A to B safely there and luckily we did. Two and a half at Aintree should suit him.”

Speaking about My Way De Solzen, yesterday’s Irish Independent Arkle Chase winner, King added: “All the options are there for him this season, it’s possible he might go to Ayr, but I’d be quite happy to put him away and maybe come back in what was the Plymouth Gin Chase over two miles and a furlong at Exeter in November.

“I’ll have to try and keep these two apart but really I think My Way will definitely go back up in trip.”

The late David Nicholson, a mentor to both King and Thornton, won the Seasons Holidays Queen Mother Champion Chase twice with Viking Flagship (1994 and 1995) and King added: “It’s such a shame he’s not here to enjoy this, but hopefully he’s been looking down on us.”

DELIGHT AND DISAPPOINTMENT FOR BEATEN TRAINERS

Voy Por Ustedes jumped brilliantly and had too much speed for his rivals when seeing off Dempsey, River City and last year’s winner Nickname for the two-mile chasers’ crown.

Carl Llewellyn, trainer of runner-up Dempsey, was choked by the defeat. Asked for his reaction, Llewellyn said: “Gutted. He’s run a good race, but it’s a shame isn’t it.”

Noel Chance was more upbeat about River City’s effort when finishing third. Chance said: “He’s a very sound jumper. Tom [Doyle] said he made a little error and was a little further back than he would have liked at the top of the hill, but he wasn’t going to finish second any way.

“At least we beat Newmill. I said last year we might even have beaten Newmill [River City unseated four out when still in contention]. We’ll probably go to Liverpool and Punchestown. He’s had back problems, but we can control those, and he’s a sound horse in every other way.”

John Murphy, trainer of fourth-placed Newmill, said: “He made a couple of very bad mistakes and that just knocked the stuffing out of him. Andrew [McNamara] said that made the difference.

“It didn’t help when Ashley Brook took him on early. That buzzed him and he got a bit low at them. He ran a cracking race apart from those two mistakes, but at that speed if you hit a fence it’s difficult to get away with it.

“He was every bit as good as last year before the race. I was totally happy with him. He’ll go to Punchestown, but he’s had a pretty light campaign because of the weather and heavy ground, so he could go to Aintree as well.”

Andrew McNamara added: “I was still in contention when he made a mistake at the third last. I wouldn’t say that we were going to win, but we lost all chance after that mistake.”

David Pipe, trainer of the Evens favourite Well Chief who fell at the second fence, said:” He was the best horse in the race but you need luck in running. and we just didn't have it.

“It is a shame that a lot of hard work has gone. The early signs are that the horse seems OK which is the main thing.”

FOURTH RACE QUOTES

THE CORAL CUP (HANDICAP HURDLE)

BURNTOAKBOY WINS FOR ‘HOBBY’ TRAINER

Doctor Richard Newland, who trains six horses in the Worcestershire village of Claines, lifted the Coral Cup after his Burntoakboy won under conditional jockey Sam Jones.

It was a first Festival winner for both the trainer and his 18-year-old jockey.

Dr Newland said: “That’s fantastic. I’ve only been training four months and I’ve got four horses on the go. I bought Burntoakboy in November from Pierce Molony after the horse was led out unsold at a sale.

“The horse had been running well in Ireland, but not at this level. They felt he was badly handicapped over there. There were bits of his form that were very good.

“I’ve only just started and the horses are running blindingly well. When he came over he wasn’t a great doer, but we’ve got him eating and he seems happy. We’ve learnt how to ride him because he’s got a lot of speed and he used to use that up and not finish his races. Now we switch him off.

“I hope to get the numbers up to about eight, but I came into this as a hobby. I’m a part-time doctor, but a full-time working man with interests in medical companies. We’ve got a great little team of people at the yard and I’d like to mention Sue Burley and Tom Weston, our stable jockey, who have done a lot of work on this horse and got him to settle.”

“I must say I did fancy his chances this morning. That was impressive. It's a fantastic thrill to be here. I've just fallen incredibly lucky with some cheap purchases that turned out to be good buys.

"The key to this horse is to switch him off in the first half of the race, but I didn't want him to be held up last. In fact, he was much handier that I thought he'd be, but he was clearly gong so well. I started screaming from the stands as Sam came down the hill. He's a top class young jockey. It's the first time he's ridden that horse and he did everything right. Brilliant."

Jones is based with Brendan Powell at Winchester in Hamspshire. He hails from Staffordshire. His father drives a racehorse ambulance, while his uncle is head lad to permit holder Renee Robeson.

He said: “It's the best feeling ever - better than your first winner, better than any winner you could ever have. He travelled so well through the race, and down the hill I was happy to sit just behind the leaders, but he has so much scope for not an over-big horse. He wings everything and comes out of your hands if you think you're going to get in tight. He jumps brilliantly. I felt I had to wing the last to seal it. He's not the biggest, but he's got a big heart and keeps galloping. A few of my relatives are here today."

IRISH TAKE SECOND AND THIRD IN CORAL CUP

Irish-trained horses filled second and third place in the Coral Cup with Powerstation taking second place and Baron de Feypo in third.

Michael Philips, trainer of Powerstation, beaten three lengths in second, said: “That was a great run. He’s a small horse and had lots of weight. Hopefully, the handicapper will drop him a few pounds!

“The horse has been sick since I got him and today was the first time I’ve really had him right.

“We will hopefully get him home tonight and then see when where we go next.

“I think he could run well in graded races. We will look at Aintree and also the Champion Stayers Hurdle at Punchestown.”

The Oliver Brady-trained Baron de Feypo finished a further five lengths back in third and returned to jubilant scenes in the winner’s enclosure with Brady leading the singing and cheers, having stripped down to his Gaelic football Monaghan shirt.

A delighted Brady said: “We really wanted to run him in the Jewson Novices’ Handicap Chase tomorrow, but the English handicapper gave him no chance of getting in so we had to run here. Whatever, I’ve still had my moment of happiness.

“This is a great result for everyone involved and for Monaghan - the county of hills and hollows. We only have seven horses in training.

“I knew he would run well. If he comes out of this race in good form, Baron de Feypo could run again on Friday in the Vincent O’Brien County Hurdle, where we could also run Maralan. Maralan would be right up there with this fellow.

“My health hasn’t been great lately but your health doesn’t bother you when you have a third in the Coral Cup.”

FIFTH RACE QUOTES
FULKE WALWYN KIM MUIR HANDICAP CHASE

WINNING AINTREE DEBUT FOR McCAIN JUNIOR

Cloudy Lane achieved something for trainer Donald McCain that his legendary father never accomplished - a Cheltenham Festival winner - when holding off the fast finishing Parsons Legacy to land the Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Handicap Chase.

Indeed Trevor Hemmings’ home-bred, partnered by three-time champion point-to-point rider Richard Burton, was McCain junior’s very first runner at the Festival.

“That’s 46 wins (including his father’s tally at the start of this season) for the season, but that doesn’t really matter now,” said McCain jnr. “And it’s a bit ridiculous to do that with my first Festival runner.

“He was the first horse that Mr Hemmings sent to me and we’d never really had big plans for him. He’s done nothing other wrong other than I shouldn’t probably have run him at Haydock last time.

“The drying ground really helped him and the only times he has had it was today and when winning the Red Square at Haydock.

“He could easily be an Aintree horse but I don’t know if next year is too soon. He has the make and shape of Amberleigh House. He’ll probably run.

“He's a very talented little horse. I really fancied him and I just thought I was a bit naughty fancying him as I did, coming to Cheltenham with my first runner. He's just a smashing horse. I've not been here for about 10 years, and I turned up and thought shit, I shouldn't be getting this carried away! I was getting a bit animated in the last 50 yards!

"Burty's' great - he does everything right, is a great horseman and he's given him a fantastic ride. I couldn't quite believe it when the two of them were coming clear down the hill, and we thought he'd stay. He's still a novice and at the last [slight mistake] that's probably what he did when he came down at Newcastle, he's just a little bit too careful.”

Burton commented: “He stumbled slightly on the other side and I lost momentum on the run-in, I think it was when he heard the crowd. I had to waste hard to do the weight but enjoyed this even more than when I won the race two years ago on Juveigneur.

“I can't believe how straight forward it was. I was meant to be a bit handier, and perhaps go wide for a bit of light, but we took plan B in the end. The horse was brilliant and jumped superbly. I just kept my head and [was] wishing for the line to come.

“Pointing is the bread and butter, but riding a winner here is second to none, and I'm lucky enough to have had two now. I think I enjoyed it even more this time!”

Ginger McCain added: “I’m delighted for Donald, he’s worked so hard and always wanted to train since his school days. He doesn’t womanise and drink, unlike his father!

“He's the bollocks! No question! How he can do that, bred as he is, I do not know! It's magical, tremendous. He might make a trainer one day. I'll congratulate his father when I meet him!”

HOBBS AND MURPHY LOOK TO THE FUTURE

Trainer Philip Hobbs was more than satisfied with the performance of Parsons Legacy, a fast-finishing three-quarters-of-a-length runner-up behind Cloudy Lane in the Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Chase.

The Minehead trainer said: “He just needed another 50 yards. It was a bit frustrating but he’s run well.

“I thought today’s trip might have been a bit short for him although the drying ground was perfect for him.

“He is in the John Smith’s Grand National, but I think he will struggle to get in off 9st 12lb, so we will also look at the Scottish and Irish Nationals and the Betfred Gold Cup.”

Cheeky Lady also stayed on well, finishing a further two lengths back in third.

Her trainer, Colm Murphy, said: “I’m thrilled to bits.

“She stays well and jumps for fun.

“I thought she had a chance coming down the hill and she really kept on.

“I would hope there is a big pot to be won with her somewhere - maybe she will go for the Irish Grand National.”

Liberthine, who is fancied for the John Smith’s Grand National at Aintree next month, lost a front shoe and spread a hind shoe.

EVANS BANNED

Tony Evans has been handed a two-day ban (Sunday, March 25 and Monday, March 26) after been found guilty of improper riding on Knowhere in the Royal & SunAlliance Chase. The stewards found him guilty under Instruction H9 of the Rules of Racing in that he used his whip when out of contention.

Race 6 - Weatherbys Champion Bumper - Quotes

CORK IS THE STAR

Cork All Star remains unbeaten in four starts after collecting the Weatherbys Champion Bumper in great style for owner Cathal Ryan, trainer Jessica Harrington and jockey Barry Geraghty.

The five-year-old was landing his second bumper at Cheltenham this season, having won the Tiger Developments Open Bumper at The Open back in November.

He was always prominent today and stayed on resolutely to score by a length and a quarter from Sophocles with Aranleigh another length and a half back in third.

Mrs Harrington said: “He is some horse and really travelled well today.

“Barry (Geraghty) only sat on the horse for the first time yesterday and said he gave him no feel at all!

“However, when he was going to the start he said ‘Jesus this feels like a machine!

“He was always travelling today and I couldn’t believe how well he was going when he turned in - I was shouting so loud I think Barry must have heard me.

“I don’t think he will run again this season as he has now won four bumpers and so I don’t think he will be eligible to be run at Punchestown.

“Anyway, he is well schooled over hurdles. I don’t keep him all the time as he spends a lot of time at home (owner Cathal Ryan’s Swordlestown Stud, where the winner was bred).

“To win two bumpers at Cheltenham in a season is just amazing.”

Barry Geraghty added: "He travelled brilliantly. I hadn't planned on taking him up there turning in, I was going to wait a little longer, but I was travelling so well, and I knew he would stay going. There was no way he was going to get done for pace. He picked up and when the second horse came to him he went on again. He was idling in front.

"He's a fair horse with a lot of pace, and although I haven't schooled him, I've heard he jumps very well. It was a smart bumper with plenty of fancied horses in it in good from. He travelled so easily through the race that he made it an easy ride.

"Jessie and myself have been having winners for the last good few years, she's good for me, and we get on well."

SOPHOCLES MAKES CORK PROVE HE’S A STAR

Cork All Star proved best of the season’s bumper horses, but a late rattle from the Pauline Ryan-ridden Sophocles, a 40/1 chance, made the winner work hard for the line.

In a contest in which Irish horses filled the first five places, Sophocles was beaten one and a quarter lengths by Cork All Star, and was one and a half lengths ahead of third-placed Aranleigh.

Curragh trainer James Leavy said of Sophocles: “We’re thrilled with that effort. This was a very hot race and he’s acquitted himself well.

“Pauline gave him a great ride, as good as any professional - she won on the horse at Thurles and deserved to keep the ride, even though she couldn’t use her claim. She was formerly with John Oxx, but is now with Jessica Harrington, who’s beaten her in this race. When you’ve ridden work with Mick Kinane and Johnny Murtagh and so on you can’t get any better than that.

“Sophocles is one of 14 horses I train. He is not an out-and-out National Hunt-bred horse and we’ll probably mix races on the Flat and over hurdles.”

Tony Mullins, trainer of Aranleigh, said: “Tony [McCoy] said things just happened a little quickly for him. When he got to the hill he came into his own, but they had gone by then. Tony’s very disappointed not to have won.

“I’ll discuss plans with J P [McManus] but this horse won’t run anywhere unless there’s cut in the ground. I’m not saying he won’t go on faster ground, but he’s a young horse and I don’t want to risk giving him a leg. He might go to Punchestown, but it’s certainly not important.”

CROWD UP

The crowd for day two of The Festival 2007, Seasons Holidays Queen Mother Champion Chase day, came to 55,215, an increase of 132 on the 2006 figure of 55,083.

Cheltenham’s Managing Director, Edward Gillespie, said: “Today we witnessed another great day’s racing with a terrific atmosphere.

“We now look forward to what promises to be a wonderful second half to The Festival.”

NEW COURSE GOOD TO SOFT FOR THURSDAY

Simon Claisse, Cheltenham’s Clerk of the Course, has declared the ground for tomorrow - run on the New Course for the first time this week - to be

GOOD TO SOFT

“The New Course has been a bit easier all week and I’ve given the going as Good To Soft this evening. It’s fresh ground and I’ve also preserved some more ground on both the hurdles and chase courses for Friday,” said Claisse.

“The forecast is for a dry night and then similar conditions as today before some light rain later on in the afternoon. There’s likely to be one or two millimetres, but no more than that, of rain going into Friday, and then another nice day on Friday.”

TOTE UP

Today’s tote on-course pool turnover was £2,720,364, up 12.2 per cent on the 2006 figure of £2,423,906.

Tote spokesman Damian Walker commented: “We were up 9.1 per cent on Tuesday and we’re delighted to continue a highly-successful Festival for on-course turnover with a great second day. The jackpot wasn’t won today and £218,051 will roll over to tomorrow.”
