THE VALUE BETTING COLUMN EVERY SATURDAY

SANDOWN PARK, SATURDAY, MARCH 12, 2005

GOING: GOOD TO SOFT

3.25pm £60,000 Sunderlands Imperial Cup Handicap Hurdle (Class A) (Listed Race), 2m 0.5f

For the latest best odds, go to www.britodds.com

BP= the best price available at the time of writing

1) 26-2 Bold Bishop Jonjo O’Neill 8-11-12 Tony McCoy
Talented but sometimes slightly quirky performer who has been restricted to just one outing in a novice chase this season. Looks to have it all to do with top weight here though he was second last year in this race off the same mark. BP= 25/1

2) 1439 Hot Shots Mark Pitman 10-11-04 Noel Fehily
Better known as a useful two-mile chaser these days but still good on his day over hurdles. Well-beaten when favourite for this race last year and not seen out since the King George on Boxing Day. Others appeal more. BP= 28/1

3) F211 Crossbow Creek Mark Rimell 7-11-03 Graham Lee
Has come good this season with wins in the Lanzarote Hurdle at Kempton and in another decent handicap hurdle at the same course. Climbing up the ratings (up 8lb for his last victory), but in such good form that he must be considered. BP= 8/1

4) 1150 Nawamees Gary Moore 7-11-02 Mick Fitzgerald
Decent handicap hurdler at best but looks in the grip of the handicapper at present. BP= 50/1

5) -111 Stance Gary Moore 6-11-02 Dean Gallagher
In good form last season and returned to hurdles with a smooth success at Newbury last week after running on the all-weather. Could well be more to come and has to be respected. BP= 13/2

6) 1841 Kalca Mome Philip Hobbs 7-11-00 Richard Johnson
Won on first start over hurdles in two years at Warwick last month but this is much tougher. Better handicapped over hurdles than fences at the moment. BP= 14/1

7) 232/ Telimar Prince Alan King 9-10-13 Robert Thornton
Not seen out for over two years but has some very useful form. Probably best watched on this occasion. BP= 25/1

8) /1-1 Far Pavilions Alan Swinbank 6-10-12 Jim Crowley
Lightly-raced in recent seasons but a very useful novice two seasons ago and there was a lot to like about his recent return to action at Musselburgh. BP= 7/1

9) 0144 Visibility Martin Pipe 6-10-10v Tom Malone (5)
Useful over hurdles last season and fair form in novice chases this season, but little to make him a viable betting proposition here. BP= 66/1

10) 1100 Monte Cinto Paul Nicholls 5-10-10 Ruby Walsh
In good form earlier in the season but slightly disappointing on his last two starts in the Ladbroke at this course and in the totesport Trophy at Newbury. Has a chance if returning to his best but may need to drop a few pounds in the ratings. BP= 16/1

11) 6F67 Fenix Lucy Wadham 6-10-08b Leighton Aspell
Has been running much better of late than form figures would suggest and a very solid effort behind Essex last time out in the totesport Trophy at Newbury. Not always the best jumper but could well run a race at a price but the handicapper may need to relent a little. BP= 12/1

12) 3323 McBain Philip Hobbs 6-10-08 Robert Stephens (5)
Good efforts behind Crossbow Creek twice earlier this season and far from disgraced behind Cerium last time out at Wincanton. Has a useful claimer on board and offers some value. BP= 20/1

13) 2/-36 After Eight Venetia Williams 5-10-06 Jim Culloty
Stable in great form at the moment. A fair juvenile hurdler, he was off the track a while and has probably needed his two runs to date. Back at two miles and with the only jockey to have won on him back on he might be worth a speculative each-way wager - well handicapped on old form. BP= 28/1

14) 2125 Chockdee Paul Nicholls 5-10-06 Christian Williams
Has some good novice form but has not always looked the most straightforward of sorts and well beaten in handicap company behind Crossbow Creek last time. BP= 33/1

15) 2-10 King Eider Brian Ellison 6-10-06 Sam Thomas
Fair staying handicapper on the Flat at best but disappointing when last seen out over hurdles and has something to prove. BP= 12/1

16) 4738 Nathos Charlie Mann 8-10-04 Steven Craine (5)
Has run fairly well in some good handicap hurdles of late but overall level of form would not suggest he is the likely winner here. BP= 40/1

17) 3P28 Winsley Oliver Sherwood 7-10-03 Owyn Nelmes (5)
Two very good efforts on his last two starts at Sandown and, with the benefit of a very decent claimer, he has an each-way chance at appealing odds. BP= 25/1

18) -503 Papillon De Iena Martin Pipe 5-10-02v1 Tom Scudamore
Fair effort when last seen at Wincanton on Boxing Day but hard to fancy overall and inexperienced. BP= 20/1

19) 8311 Medison Martin Pipe 5-10-01 Timmy Murphy
Looks to be Martin Pipe’s first string following victories at Taunton and Ludlow in novice events. This is a totally different proposition but of course his trainer should never be underestimated. Very short price though. BP= 11/2

20) 7164 All Star Nicky Henderson 5-10-00 Andrew Tinkler
Easy winner at Taunton in December but beaten twice since - will need to be at his very best. BP= 20/1

SUMMARY
A typically competitive renewal of this famous handicap. The value selection is AFTER EIGHT while McBain and Winsley are others to consider.

CODEBREAKER

SANDOWN PARK, SATURDAY, MARCH 12, 2005

GOING: GOOD TO SOFT

3.25pm £60,000 Sunderlands Imperial Cup Handicap Hurdle 2m 0.5f

Past trends

15 of the last 17 winners were aged between five and seven

14 of the last 17 winners carried 11st 1lb or less to victory

14 of the last 17 winners had raced between one and four times earlier in the campaign

11 of the last 17 winners finished in the first three on their last outing

Last year’s Sunderlands Imperial Cup Handicap Hurdle victor Scorned attempted to secure the bonus, which this year is £60,000, for gaining victory at the Cheltenham Festival the following week.

Unfortunately, he was unable to emulate Olympian in 1993 and the 998 hero Blowing Wind, who are the two horses to manage the lucrative double, and he found Sporazene too powerful in the Vincent O’Brien County Handicap Hurdle.

15 of the last 17 Imperial Cup winners were aged between five and seven - the two exceptions were Precious Boy, who was eight when he struck in this prestigious handicap in 1994, and Scorned, who was one year older.

Of this year’s 20 contestants, this trend immediately rules out eight-year-olds Bold Bishop and Nathos together with nine-year-old Telimar Prince and 10-year-old Hot Shots.

Seven years ago Blowing Wind, off a mark of 11st 10lb, became only the third winner of the Imperial Cup since 1988 to carry more than 11st 1lb to victory. The other two successful horses to manage this feat during this period were 1991 hero Precious Boy (11st 7lb) and Korelo (11st 6lb), successful in 2003.

The bias in favour of lower-weighted contenders means that Stance, Nawamees and Crossbow Creek, who are all due to shoulder 11st 2lb or higher, disappear from the reckoning.

14 of the last 17 Imperial Cup winners had raced between one and four times earlier in the campaign - the three anomalies were Korelo (eight runs), 2001 winner Ibal (five) and Carlito Brigante, successful in 1997, (six).

Kalca Mome, Monte Cinto, Fenix, McBain, Chockdee, Winsley and All Star have all been seen on a racecourse at least five times this term and are eliminated.

Good recent form seems to help here with 11 of the last 17 winners finishing in the first three on their previous outing.

Visibility, King Eider and After Eight were all unplaced last time and this trio are unlikely to be entering the winner’s enclosure this Saturday.

Returning to age, five-year-olds have been at least three times as successful as any other age group. They have won 10 of the last 17 runnings compared to six-year-olds (twice), seven-year-olds (three victories), one eight-year-old and one nine-year-old.

Six-year-old Far Pavilions is struck through leaving the choice of this week’s Codebreaker selection between Papillon De Iena and MEDISON. Both are trained by champion trainer Martin Pipe who has an excellent record, with five winners.

Medison is the choice as 13 of the last 17 winners had their previous start in the same year as their Sandown victory - Papillon De Iena has not been seen in action since Boxing Day at Wincanton.
