EUROPE'S STAR COLTS ENTERED FOR ULTIMATEBET.COM 2000 GUINEAS
Powerful entries from Ireland and France for the first Classic of the British season
A top-class entry of 84 colts, including all last season's juvenile stars from Britain, Ireland and France, has been received for the £300,000 UltimateBet.com 2000 Guineas at Newmarket on Saturday 1st May.
Long-time ante-post favourite, ONE COOL CAT, who cemented his reputation with two Group 1 victories at The Curragh last season, is one of 10 entries for Aidan O'Brien. The Ballydoyle handler has also entered YEATS, unbeaten in one race and currently favourite on most lists for the Vodafone Derby.
Dermot Weld, who sent out last year's Guineas hero, REFUSE TO BEND, has made 5 entries, notably the current ante-post second favourite, GREY SWALLOW, while John Oxx's unbeaten AZAMOUR brings the total number of entries from across the Irish Sea to 16.
If the Irish entry is strong, then so too is the French. Though numbering only 4 in total, they look to be an exceptional quartet. AMERICAN POST, trained by Criquette Head-Maarek, landed two Group 1s last season including the Racing Post Trophy. The Jonathan Pease-trained BAGO was unbeaten in 4 races, including the Group 1 Criterium International. Andre Fabre's highly regarded DIAMOND GREEN was unbeaten in 3 races, while the Robert Collet-trained WHIPPER tasted Group 1 success in the Prix Morny.
Saeed bin Suroor is responsible for no less than 17 entries. Notable amongst these are last season's Royal Lodge (G.2) winner, SNOW RIDGE, previously with Marcus Tregoning, and the horse that finished a close third in that race, RULE OF LAW, formerly with David Loder.
Mark Johnston has entered his strongest ever Guineas team. The Middleham handler's 5 entries include LUCKY STORY, who won his last 4 races last season including two Group 2's; PEARL OF LOVE, who won 4 out of 6 last year including a Group 1 in Italy; Royal Ascot winner RUSSIAN VALOUR; and the highly regarded MISTER MONET.
There are a host of other entries from Britain who excelled in some of last season's top juvenile races. Jeremy Noseda's 3 entries include the Gimcrack (G.2) and Middle Park (G.1) winner, BALMONT, and PEAK TO CREEK, who won no less than 7 races last season including the valuable Redcar Two-Year-Old Trophy. Jamie Osborne's MILK IT MICK sprang a surprise in the Darley Dewhurst Stakes (G.1), beating Roger Charlton's stable star, THREE VALLEYS, by a head with Barry Hills' HAAFHD a close third. All three are entered, together with the Racing Post Trophy (G.1) runner-up, FANTASTIC VIEW, trained by Richard Hannon.
Amongst the unexposed entries to take the eye are MUSTAJED and ORIENTAL WARRIOR, both trained Marcus Tregoning, and the Brian Meehan-trained CARRIZO CREEK who won 3 races last year.

UltimateBet.com 1000 GUINEAS REMATCH IS ON!
Connections of last year's winner and runner-up set to do battle again as 74 are entered for the UltimateBet.com 1000 Guineas
The Sir Michael Stoute-trained and Cheveley Park Stud-owned RED BLOOM, who is reported to have wintered particularly well, and DENEBOLA, trained in France by Pascal Bary and owned by the Niarchos Family, stand out amongst the entries for the UltimateBet.com 1000 Guineas at Newmarket on Sunday 2nd May. They head the ante-post market for the first fillies' Classic and look set to try to follow in the footsteps of RUSSIAN RHYTHM and SIX PERFECTIONS, who fought out the finish of the race last year for the same connections.
RED BLOOM was impressive in winning two out of three starts last season, including a smooth victory in the Group 1 Meon Valley Stud Fillies' Mile at Ascot in October. DENEBOLA looked equally good when winning the Prix Marcel Boussac (G.1) at Longchamp on Arc Day and recent indications are that she is likely to try to avenge the defeat of SIX PERFECTIONS at Newmarket last May.
They are unlikely to have it all their own way, however, with an array of top-class fillies entered against them. As with the UltimateBet.com 2000 Guineas the previous day, Saeed Bin Suroor has numerically the strongest entry with 14 fillies in the race. The most interesting of these is CARRY ON KATIE, previously trained by Jeremy Noseda, who won all three of her starts last year, setting a strong pace to win the Group 1 Sky Bet Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket and the Peugeot Lowther Stakes (G.2) at York. CAIRNS is another strong fancy in the ante-post betting, having demonstrated a great turn of foot in coming from last to first in the Group 2 Owen Brown Rockfel Stakes on Champions' Day last October, while CATSTAR won the UAE 1000 Guineas last month.
Looking for its first 1000 Guineas since LAS MENINAS triumphed 10 years ago, Ireland has supplied 15 entries in all, unusually representing no less than 7 different trainers. Aidan O'Brien has 7 entries, the most significant of which is NECKLACE. The Darshaan filly won two out of four starts last season including the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes at The Curragh. Jim Bolger has 3 entries, while Dermot Weld, John Oxx, David Wachman, Edward Lynam and Kevin Prendergast all have one each.
In addition to DENEBOLA, there are a further 3 entries from France. The best of these is probably GREEN SWALLOW, trained by Phillipe Demercastel. She was fourth to DENEBOLA in the Prix Marcel Boussac and won the Prix du Calvados (G.3) at Deauville on her previous start. Eric Libaud's MISS MAMBO and Rupert Pritchard-Gordon's MALAICA complete the quartet.
Mark Johnston, who has such a strong hand in the UltimateBet.com 2000 Guineas, pins his hopes on ATTRACTION in the fillies' equivalent. She showed sensational speed as a juvenile with victories in the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot and Newmarket's Chippenham Lodge Stud Cherry Hinton Stakes before injury curtailed her season.
A large number of other highly promising British-trained fillies figure amongst the entries including Mick Channon's MAJESTIC DESERT, who went down by only a short-head to CARRY ON KATIE in the Sky Bet Cheveley Park Stakes, and Barry Hills' SECRET CHARM, who created a very good impression in winning two out of two last season.
NEWMARKET DELIGHTED WITH ENTRIES FOR BOTH RACES
Michael Prosser, Newmarket's Clerk of the Course, commented:
"These are extremely high quality entries, with particularly strong challengers from Ireland and France in both races. It's great for us that in the first year of a new sponsor in UltimateBet.com, both Guineas promise at this stage to be vintage renewals.
"A rematch between the same connections responsible for last year's one-two is a fascinating possibility in the fillies' race, while a showdown between the two big Irish hopes in the colts' race would be a huge draw. All roads lead to Newmarket on the first weekend of May!"
